Why this could be TikTok's last year in the US I DW News

American lawmakers have passed a bill which could lead to a ban on TikTok. The bi-partisan legislation forces the popular social media platform to divest itself from its Chinese parent company Bytedance or face a nationwide ban. The bill gives TikTik one year to sell its stake to a US-based entity. Lawmakers in both parties have raised national security and data privacy concerns. Supporters of TikTok question the constitutionality of the bill. The popular video app has an estimated 170 million users in the US.

If US politicians actually cared about personal data security then it would make regulations covering all social media. Social media has become a major part of our daily lives, and it is important to ensure that users are being properly protected. To do this, governments should be regulating the activities of social media companies and enforcing standards of transparency. But they don't care about the consumers. They only care about protecting US social media corporations that donated lots of campaign money like Facebook's top executives that have made at least $3.9 million in political donations, according to data from the Federal Election Commission.

Chinese gov has no say in the sell of individual company, but it has laws to prevent the export of important technology, every gov around world has these laws, not unique to China. So technically tik tok sale can be banned since it involves the sales of the core technology that’s developed by Chinese. So it all depends on if China feels this is worth battling about or it should focus on retaliating through other means.

At least some thing not really discussed in this was the fact that after the user data was on the server was said to be secure according to byte dance (i think its called Project Texas), they still found that admins from China could still pull whatever data they wanted. Many articles referencing insiders state that the Chinese side of the company can still access pretty much any user data that they want. Also a major spark of this was one of the recent Chinese National Security law that was argued to be so exceptionally vague that the Chinese government could basically force any company to act in its own interest with virtually no legal limits. It should be noted that China does not allow for US based Social media and even bytedance has to run a wholly separate app in China as the Tik Tok app is blocked in China.
@trnogger
@trnogger 14 күн бұрын
How is that different from any other app? Admins always have full access, that is the point of being an admin. What is a problem is when state authorities get access to private conversations, but that is happening with US apps as well. Which is why US apps usually face scrutiny in the EU, where privacy still trumps "national security".
@mapletibits6372
@mapletibits6372 14 күн бұрын
Ahem, there is a difference you know. TikTok is fully compliant to USA law in their operation, going as far as storing American user data in the States and through third party Oracle, an American company, cloud system. Whereas American entities like Facebook, they ‘left’ China, strictly speaking not banned, because they did not want to comply with Chinese laws; which China gov asked them to store Chinese user data in China as well as sensitive content restriction. In comparison, entities like Apple continues to operate in China because they follow Chinese law, which means to follow China gov ban, like removal of WhatsApp and Thread.
@shenghaochen8913
@shenghaochen8913 14 күн бұрын
So Oracle have a security concern then. Trust me if there they have evidence already, they don’t need to waste time here, just band right away using executive orders right. When they don’t do that? Because they want to own TikTok for censorship and money.
@chrisporto6716
@chrisporto6716 14 күн бұрын
@@mapletibits6372 Facebook was blocked in 2009 after it was found people were communicating using it in some riots in the western provenances. Chinese laws are notoriously vague, unlike many western laws. You're in compliance until they decide that you are not.The vagueness allows the state to interpret them as they see fit. Many of these apps suddenly fell afoul of "National Security laws" and were ok until there was some event occurred that could be negatively associated with them. A good example was during the HK unrest, a road map app got banned/blocked because protesters figured out they could share police locations by putting pins on the maps. I dont recall any company leaving because they had to store data on any chinese server (its possible though, feel free to share which one if you know). The reality is most left because the CCP required them to have censors that could remove anything deemed anti Chinese, not just for the domestic users but users anywhere. China has a long history of trying punishing companies who didnt toe the line just because a single employee spoke out, even if it was on a platform not available in China. Also Data being stored is different from Data being accessed. Just because its on Oracles servers does not mean the parent company cant see it, they still need to do updates, and they need your personal info to calibrate their algorithms for that ad revenue and moderate content. They dont make money by simply storing videos after all. Around January this year, it was revealed that Chinese admins still had access to the data despite the traffic being moved to US based servers back in 2022. The info was obtained from insiders sharing internal communications sent by executives. Not just that but many policies regarding separation of the parent company from the data were quietly rolled back at the start of 2023. Feel free to search for info about the article, the original is behind a paywall (The Wall Street Journal) but plenty of other news organizations summarized it.

@@trnogger Oh totally agree, and I run blockers, dont even use chrome, and minimize my use of social media (have to interact with it a bit since the rest of the world doesn't see it the same way I do, and heck Yahoo is tracking this convo right now!), but im an odd ball in that respect. I absolutely hate the idea that companies use my data without me benefiting from it. I dont know if its still the case, but Facebook would track you via the Like Button on any website, even if you didnt if you didnt use the Like button itself. So long as that button was displayed, FB was trying to track your habits. These websites absolutely need to be heavily regulated in general. Nothing prevents any US social media company from abusing thier data collection. They could sell much of the same data to a foreign adversary essentially if they wanted too.
