How to clean and maintain your Sawyer Squeeze water filter:
1) Use your Sawyer Squeeze to filter clean water into a water bottle or bucket.
2) Using the syringe provided with your filter, back-flush your water filter by driving water backwards through the filter. Repeat until the water comes out clean and clear.
3) Firmly tap your water filter against your palm several times.
4) Back-flush your filter again until the water, once again, comes out clean and clear.
Do this as frequently as possible and your Sawyer Squeeze can last you a lifetime!

I went out and bought a Sawyer after I heard them on The Outdoor Evolution podcast. They mentioned how they'd donated filters to Canadian First Nations reserves that had boil water advisories for over 20 years. The Canadian government keeps promising they'll get treatment plants built (or fix the broken ones) and they just never get around to it. So Sawyer stepped up and gave them filters. Many thanks to Sawyer for everything they do around the world, and even right here in North America, to give people clean water to drink. I'm not crying, you're crying! No, wait, we're BOTH crying! This touches my public health heart in so many ways. I especially love that, while of course Sawyer plays a critical role in this and should be recognized (will be ordering them for my home emergency kit and bugout bag STAT) you kept the focus on the Honduran woman without whom the filters would just be so much plastic trash. Too many times corporations and organization parachute in like great white saviors and fail to make the connections needed to make their donations and programs meaningful and successful--so again, Kudos to Sawyer, BUT yes, Miranda, you nailed it, it is the women who take on the responsibility for filtering water not just for their own but for other households and for training other water women that actually make the program work. Great video. My big takeaways are, water is a human right and being able to buy a new filter when I don't take care of the old one is a privilege. The visual for the impact of the cleaning process was fantastic. It's easy to say "clean your filter" but seeing the process combined with the proof of how long the filter can last if you just take care of it was fantastic.

I love that tip about banging the filter on your palm. It makes a huge difference. I have a relatively new filter that I have taken on a handful of trips. I actually used it this morning on a slightly longer day hike and hadn't cleaned it yet after getting home. The water I filtered on the trail this morning was from a nice clear pool of water in a creek. I back flushed it once and got a little grime, but it went clear relatively quick. I tapped a few times and back flushed again. It was worse than the first back flush. There was definitely gunk and grime in my filter from previous trips. This is a game changer. Thanks!

What I liked about yours, Miranda, was the in-depth look at the process at getting the filters to communities and then educating the water women. An interesting design feature of the Sawyer is that you don't NEED to use the syringe to back flush. If you use a water bottle with a sports cap (like the Smart Water, for example), it will fit into the backflush spot and you can squeeze it to back flush your water. Obviously you'll want to not only use clean water, but a bottle that has only held filtered water so you don't accidentally cross contaminate your filter. I love my Sawyer filter and seeing this, I love it even more.

36:29 I just watched your entire video and I had tears in my eyes. I own a Sawyer Water Filter but haven’t used it “for real” yet. I mainly got it for emergencies. However, I’m recovering from an ankle replacement surgery and I love to hike so I’m going to use it on the trail. But that’s not the most amazing thing. Just this morning a group from Knoxville, TN (where I live) left on a mission trip to Honduras. They will be work with those struggling with addiction in communities and places of incarceration. I would have been on that trip except for my surgery. I can’t wait to tell them about the “Water Women” and share your video. This is an extraordinary video! I have been aware in the past that Sawyer does a lot to benefit others with clean water but I had no idea of the scale and this was just at one country. I am a firm believer in Sawyer. This is a great video. Too many have no idea how lucky we are to have clean, fresh and safe water. Very touching celebration. You always have to watch out when visiting these areas because too often end up leaving all you stuff behind, including your heart for them, because there is such a need. Bravo! Thanks for promoting the concept of clean water in poorer countries. I have been involved in promoting water projects through Church World Service. In 2006 and again in 2007 we got to visit water projects throughout Kenya and also in Uganda. It was amazing how a simple well or other water project which provides clean water can totally transform a community. There are the obvious health benefits, but also it frees people in many ways, especially the women and girls. They have the responsibility of getting water and can end up walking miles every day to fetch water. With a local clean water supply, much time is freed up for other activities and girls get to stay in school longer. God bless you for doing this video.

Great video. I hiked in La Tigra National Park back in 1999 when our family our family volunteered to build housing with Church World Service. I am also a hydrologist and I took a simple water filter which screwed on as a cap for a water bottle. The group thought I was crazy, but I wanted to test my filter in less than pristine conditions (not like our Colorado mountain streams). I drank from taps, from rivers, from wells, while the rest of the group drank only bottled water. I was fine.

We were just in Tegucigalpa in August. I recognized the airport and some of the landscaping coming into the city. Our missions center had guard dogs that were set loose at night too. We spent a week there and provided a medical brigade at a church on the west mountain. A hawk watched our van enter the neighborhood each day we were there. A hawk is a gang member with a cell phone to protect the community. Because they recognized our van and the help we were bringing we were waved on in. I’m sure when the van you were in entered a neighborhood you got the same treatment because of the work the women are doing to bring clean water to the people, you probably got a pass and may never have known it. What a joy to see your video and know there are others making a huge difference in Honduras.
