Pure genius who loves his work and the sounds around him. Definitely doesn't look like a guy who'd drink Red Bull or anything while performing. Come on Red Bull, we know you made the documentary happen, brand placement in performances was needless.

Correct, his mics and speakers are selfmade. The recorder he's using (you can see it for example at 1:18 ) is the "Tascam DR-680", meanwhile there's a newer MK2 version of it. The DAW he's using in the studio is "Avid Pro Tools". The live mixing tool is the discontinued "Novation Remote ZeRO SL MkII". But the mastermind behind this great music is Yosi Horikawa himself ;)

Why would you use 4 microphones located in one position? Wouldn't it be better to have 4 microphones on different tri-pods pointing at a center in a square position? I am just starting to learn about sound, so this may sound obtuse.
@kieranmaraj3686
@kieranmaraj3686 6 жыл бұрын
Good question! I don't think it's the exact technique he's using, but look up 'ambisonic' sound. A first order ambisonic microphone (which is comprised of 4 mic capsules) allows for the recording of 360 degree audio in 3 axes. Think of capturing the entire sound of a space, rather than just a single focused sound.
@Theupgradeguy
@Theupgradeguy 3 жыл бұрын
I believe he was trying to capture the 360 deg. sounds as they would hit a person's ears- from one point of view- the listener. The interesting thing about recording anything is that experimentation often leads to new valid techniques and sound signatures.

I am a teenager (15) and listen to Yosi with studio headphones. I feel like you can still appreciate his music with bluetooth headphones though, as long as the white noise isn't too bad. I mean the Airpods pro are great. I usually am a Apple hater, but can't deny that they are quite good.

i think you can still appreciate music with bad audio equipment. deaf people can still appreciate very bassy music, but if you think about it, they would be working with the "worst" audio equipment because they can't hear much, they can only really feel it. people still enjoy and can become moved by music on am/fm radio. bohemian rhapsody still sounds good even at a horrible bitrate and with interference. some peoples memories of music include listening to something for the first time through a wall. maybe you don't get to experience the directionality of his music, but you can still experience how he uses the environment as instruments. similar to how when you listen to his music, you don't get to be like "oh yeah this sound is something i actually recorded, and decided to layer into this part of the song" like how he does, but you can still appreciate the directionality. i feel like there is to much of an emphasize on equipment in the audio community, and not enough for just appreciating the music for what it is. like i can randomly change the EQ settings on any song i like, and it's still recognizable as something i enjoy, even if i remove all the highs or all the lows. I also think "current era audio listeners" are the most likely to have better equipment compared to older eras. maybe the percent of people who have "high end" equipment has gone down, but compared to many years ago, "medium end" equipment today, would be equivalent to the "high end" equipment of the time.
