Kolaveri means "murderous or killer rage"! This song is for soup boys (used for guys who go through failure in love ) and in this context "Why this kolaveri di" basically means "why have you dumped me?". The speciality of this song is that the singer/actor Dhanush did not write any lyrics of this song on a paper and just sang as it came to his mind in 20 minutes.

@bkstacker 247 it's a local slang that we people in India-Tamil Nadu use. To be more precise we tamilians use the term to interact between each other(a type informal speech).it's a term that can bring disrespect, so it's generally used between the people who are really close(like friends, an elder to younger(like mother to daughter). "di" is used to describe girls and "da" is used to describe boys. I think this can clarify ur doubt. It's just so hard to explain.😅

@bkstacker 247 to a female it's "di" and to a male it's "da", but basically it means "oi" or "you" it can b used to attract attention from someone by calling them "Di" or "Da", but in other cases it's just basically a way of directing it at someone, "why do this, di?" basically means "why did you do this?"(directed at girl), or if you said "why do this, da" it means "why did you do this?"(directed at guy). So in this case "why this kolaveri di" from my language "kolavaki" means "it's been destroyed/kill", but kolaveri is different it means "destroying/murderous rage" so in that sense "why this kolaveri di" the man is asking "why do you have this destroyer's/killer's rage"

@bkstacker 247 Di reprents female gender. Di provides the same difference as "why are u mad?" and "why are you mad, girl?" The later is not so common in English but common in Tamil. Most common when speaking to buddies. Without "di" or "da" it just sounds disrespectful to friends, but doesn't mean disrespect. Even without di or da the sentence is complete but we absolutely cannot do that way. There is an emotional element missing when it comes to frnds or siblings without di or da With elders "di" and "da" means disrespect irrespective it's second or third person just like calling elders won't their name is disrespectful in Tamil.. For elders "nga" is used. It's shows respect. To summarize. "Va" is word which means come. Va di = come girl Va da = come man/mate Va = sounds no emotion. May be used for pets Va-nga = come (with respect). It's mostly ends with relationship u have eight the person's. Va-nga dad. Va-nga mom.
