Those Seattle Autumn photos were very pleasant. Glass floor at the top of a tall tower... less pleasant. But that's me. I could say I got the 7A body cap lens for my OM-5 for this purpose; but the problem with an EDC is that I need to be somewhere to justify the use of an EDC, which hasn't happened much with a month of cover shifts in cold & flu season. So my EDC has been my phone, but even that implies I've been snapping away with it. 🥴

I'm loving the OM-D E-M5 with the 17mm f/1.8. I did add the Fotodiox metal grip, not for the grip on the front so much as it added just a touch more height so my pinky has a place to go. That 17mm is perfect for street, and love the MF clutch so I can quickly go MF with a preset distance for that "Ricoh GR snap focus" effect. Brilliant little street camera and I might like it more than my M240 at the moment.

My everyday ILC camera is usually my Pentax Q7, but a lot of the time, lately, I've been carrying an old Pentax point and shoot (the VS 20) in daylight because I love the pocketability and the way the CCD sensor images look really appeals to me at this moment in my life.

I wish Panasonic (or OM) would release a modern small body again. At the moment it's all giant, heavy, expensive bodies at prices where most people may as well just get a full frame mirrorless camera unless they are a professional with a particular niche where smaller lenses are needed. Stuff like the GM / GF series and the old Olympus Pen E-P series are what brought a lot of us to m4/3.

I don't get this idea that somehow one should give up the size and weight advantages of MFT just because an OM-1 or G9II body with industry leading tech costs what a mid-range FF body without much if any of that tech costs. I have no interest in ever lugging around lenses that weigh far more, are far larger, and have half the reach. Heaving said that, I would love to see both a high end range-finder MFT body like a PEN F II or a GX-something with an EVF. Also, there should be a mid-range body also with EVF.

I want a 3.5mm audio jack for my small Panasonic body! Since there are so many video features having the jack would be great and wouldn’t threaten the G or GH body sales. Looking forward to receiving phase detection. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

@gregfeeler6910 because the newer bodies aren't that much smaller anymore, the benefit comes primarily from the lenses but some fairly small very capable lenses are available for aps-c. I just switched to MFT but I bought older cameras because of the size. If I wasn't such a sucker for the lens selection that I realistically will never use, I could have stuck with an aps-c camera with one or two lenses. MFT has it's place but they're making it harder on themselves by not providing the tiny bodies to boast about.

Thanks for another great video, Emily. I worked my backwards to the GX8 after being a GX9 user for the past 5 years since that camera's release in 2018. Following problems with my GX9 after being caught in a heavy shower, I decided I needed a weatherproof alternative and bought a used GX8 from MPB earlier this year, mainly as a back-up. But once I started using it, I realised what I had been missing with its superior ergonomics (I love that grip - and the excellent EVF). The result is role reversal with the GX9, which I still love using but is now serving more as a 2nd camera body, with the GX8 taking over as the constant companion, especially for travel. It is also feels far better balanced than the GX9 with larger lenses, including my Lumix Leica 12-60 or 14-140mm II. As I get older I find that SLR style cameras are too bulky and inconvenient for me to carry around and I sold my old G9 a while ago. I have neither the will nor the budget to consider the G9ii (I don't need a hybrid as I don't shoot video). Like others here - I really wish Panasonic (and/or OM Systems) would turn their attention towards producing a GX10 (or PEN F II) equivalent, taking advantage of technical advances but keeping the form factor. In the meantime, please keep posting about the GX8 - it will be fascinating to see what results you get.

Like @bobstephenson956 I backed into the GX8. I started with the GX85 which I liked very much. Early last year upgraded to the GX9 and kit P12-60mm lens. Last month purchased the GX8 @ a local camera store for $400. So far I don’t know if I prefer the GX9 vs the GX8. Last weekend I purchased the 20mm pancake lens. No more cameras or lenses for a while. Amen to a GX10. Upgrade the GX8 with phase detection. A full size audio jack (3.5mm) would be nice too. Better IBIS and IBIS that works when shooting 4K video would be nice too. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

There can never be enough GX8 videos! It’s still my favourite despite all its limitations, there’s just something about it that makes you want to grab it and use it. I’m most often pairing mine with the SLR Magic 25mm T0.95 cine lens, it matches the body really well and gives such a nice dreamy look to the photos. Btw. as a tall person I many times use the tilting viewfinder in order to be able to shoot from a more normal perspective :D If I held the camera straight to my eye I’d aim over everything unless I either point the camera slightly downwards or crouch, neither of which is usually ideal. So for me the tilting viewfinder is actually often quite useful :D

Another Masterpiece from the Master. And yes, I am glad you mentioned the issue about the EVF. In the UK -- no pun intended - "bright sunlight" is less of an issue. In Southern regions, and in particular in open areas without shade - it is often almost impossible to work without it.

While it’s no longer my primary (G9ii now), the GX8 is by far my favorite m43 body and I probably will always keep at least 1 of them. Sadly Pany threw a lot of customers off with the western naming scheme (the GX9 is called the GX7 mk3 in asia) so I’m not sure if we’ll see another weather sealed range finder…. But I really hope they upgrade it to a mk2!

Hi Emily. Ref the viewfinder/rear screen point - I just cant get into photography without a viewfinder (I did try the GX850 you loved). It doesn't help that I need reading glasses which no one ever seems to mention as a negative when using the rear screen, which baffles me. Everyone seems to adore the GX8. I had the "upgraded" GX9 which seems to be a downgrade in some respects, notably the viewfinder and grip.

I love my GX8, but I wouldn't call it tiny. Been wondering, if I should have picked the GX9 instead, but I don't think so. I have used the articulating EVF for getting a lower angle when photographing musicians and DJ's on stage in a small venue. I did not enjoy the experience much - I just got a bit light headed, and not in a good way. I have also added an Olympus E-M5 iii to my line-up, and while the two cameras have the same megapixel count, they are very different cameras with the E-M5 iii being the smaller of the two cameras. I'll test that duo this upcoming weekend - hopefully with good results.

I've been playing with a second hand GX85 I picked up for cheap recently. Even smaller than the GX8, but only 16MP and no weather sealing, among other differences. I love using it though. This morning I took it out along with the Fujifilm XE2 to do a side by side comparison. Preference? To be decided, but I do love these smaller, pocketable cameras. I think the GX8 is a superb camera but... although its EVF and grip are far better than the GX9, and it is weather sealed, I do prefer the GX9 for street photography. It is smaller, a little lighter, has a tilting monitor and much better IBIS, together with a sensor without an AA filter. I also think some of the controls on the GX9 are better positioned and cannot be pressed inadvertently. With that said, for many settings other than street photography, I'll pick up the GX8 with a 14-140mm lens, and the firmware update seems to deal with the reported shutter shock.

I can fit it, my GM5, and like 6-7 compact lenses in a teeny messenger bag. If I'm carrying my GH6, I can carry only it and 1 spare lens. I know pricing is a concern with the smaller cameras. It would be really cool if they did a GX and GXH versions so we could pay a little more to get all the video bells and whistles while not increasing the baseline cost (like S5II vs S5IIx).

I found the same thing about EVFs! I live in the Inland Northwest, which is quite bright--especially compared to where I grew up in Seattle. I bought a Fuji X-M1, and within a year realized that I needed an EVF for composition. I was getting so annoyed at missing horizon straightness, visual rhythm compositions, and so many awkward edges. So, I picked up a X-T20. LOVE both cameras, but I can only shoot with the X-T20 most days. I thought it was just the old 2013 panel on the X-M1--but based on what you said, I think it might just be the sun. Thanks for another great video filled with fantastic photos and interesting thoughts.

I looked at the GX8 for a walk around camera but I wasn't crazy about some of the limitations of the older camera. I considered the GX9, but didn't want to pay that much for a walk around camera. I ran into a deal on E-Bay for the G95 with a lens I planned on buying anyway and the bundle was just $200 more than the lens itself would be. The G95 is only slightly larger and heavier than the Gx8, plus it is a much newer camera with good video capabilities and bonus features like live composite that I don't even have in my newer GH6. Paired with my 8-18 lens it works great. But I am considering a 12-35 2.8 or the 12-60 2.8-4.0 lens as the ultimate walk around combo. The Olympus 12-200 could also be interesting.

Nice trip and photos and review Emily! One question, if you would have ime to answer: what were your gears for this trip? I understood 14mm, 25mm and 12-60 ? May be a zoom for a bigger reach? Do you have regrets with your set of gears during the trip? thanks in advance

Have just discovered your videos and loving them!! I have to go bare bones budget right now so it's a toss up between a Lumix DMC-G85 and an Olympus OM-D E-M1. You mostly mention Lumix, and wondered if that was just a personal preference. Also heard that Olympus is selling off their camera business so... what would be your pearl of wisdom on which to choose? Many thanks! Now to get the popcorn and watch more of your videos...

Thanks for the video. This is the camera I want from Panasonic or OM System. Hopefully they finally get tired of these comments and make one, haha. Just yesterday it was reported that OM System is making a “very high end” camera, possibly an OM-1X. While this is great for the M43 market and wildlife shooters, it does not fit with my interests. OM, in particular, seems fixated on the “REI ad” or “Nat Geo assignment” aesthetic.

If you like Towers, than put Bratislava onto your To-Do list for next year. Its a fantastic city with jaw-dropping photo opportunities everywhere you look. And, best of all is the UFO Tower beside the river. So iconic! I went to visit my sister, who was teaching out there, and stayed in a floating hotel right beside the bridge and looking out to the tower. You can even take a day trip to Vienna, in Austria, on a boat along the Danube. That place is awesome!

I've had Micro Four Thirds cameras from the beginning (I still have my Lumix G1). I have noticed of late, that M4/3 cameras seem to be getting, shall we say, larger in the girth and heavier with it. Even some of the pro lenses are not the tiny light weight things that they used to be. For me, the smaller light weight cameras and lenses is what M 4/3 should be what it is about. For now, I absolutely love my older Lumix G7 (yes, I know it's only 16mp), which is super light with a bag full of equally light lenses.

@@MicroFourNerds Another plastic fantastic. Have both the G7 & G9. Yes the G9 is bigger & heavier. When going out with a large body this is the one I select. Love the IBIS which the G7 lacks. Need a camera for stills only? The GX9 comes along to play. When I purchased the GX9 the P12-60mm kit lens came with it. Was going to sell it to help pay for the body. I have the PL12-60mm lens. Santa Monica sunset. Thank the pollutants in the air for your sunset. Thank you for this video. I just purchased a GX8 because of your video. Like bobstephenson956 I have gone from the GX9 to a GX8. I also have a GX85 (80). Love these small body powerhouses. The 85 & 9 have better IBIS. 8 has no IBIS in 4K video. Thank goodness one can use an IS lens in that case. The 8 has an audio jac (yea!) but only 2.5mm. Why? Thank you Panasonic for including an audio jac in ANY GX body. It seems nuts, to me, such a little body with all this video goodness I hoveled by the audio jac lack. The GX line doesn’t compete with the GH bodies. Hope the next GX body has a 3.5mm audio in jac plus phase detection. I’d buy that in a nano second. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Hi Emily. Still wanting to upgrade my amazing Olympus e-pl3. I have narrowed it down to two cameras: Lumix G85 w/ a 12 mm - 60 mm lens, or an Olympus OM-D-E-10 Mark IV. with the pancake 14-42 mm (EZ) zoom. The Lumix is $100 cheaper but has a 16 mp sensor versus a 20.4 mp sensor. Which would you choose and why? Thanks for your swift reply.

GX8 is famous for its shutter shock issue... was it finally resolve via firmware update ?
@MicroFourNerds
@MicroFourNerds 11 ай бұрын
In a round about way... it affected very specific shutter speeds (1/60 to 1/150th or so... around there!) And the firmware shifts the camera into electronic shutter for the affected shutter speeds. It was only on a select few lenses, usually the tele lenses, rather than primes. So it hasn't been an issue for me thankfully!

I own both the GX 85 and GX nine. The GX9 is an incremental improvement over the GX 85. 16 megapixels versus 20 megapixels. I can’t see the difference. The GX9 has slightly better ibis and video features. Maybe not worth the upgrade. The one feature of the GX9 has that I love that the GX 85 lacks is L monochrome D. This setting is my favorite B&W setting. The GX85 is cheap. A good body alone on MPB is selling for $354. You can get the two lens kit from B&H for $650. I can recommend this body from personal experience. I have the black body. A real looker. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

@@Deetroiter Yes. The GX85 has a B&W mode. L monochrome D is a mode that appears in the G9 and GX9. It is one of several jpeg modes baked into lumix cameras. L monochrome D is a very contrasting look that crushes the blacks. I dislike when blacks look grey. This is my favorite B&W jpeg simulation. It is one B&W look. There are several B&W looks. Find or develop a look you like. The GX85 is a highly competent camera and can be bought from about $350. I’ve seen GX8 bodies in the $400+ range. Find a body you like and then use it. Good luck. I use my GX-8 with manual lenses. Most, if not all, mirrorless cameras will take manual lenses with an adapter. Just look for the features you want in your price range, make sure it has a mode to shoot without a lens, and you're golden!
@MicroFourNerds
@MicroFourNerds 11 ай бұрын
Yep! As @figjoy says, most cameras will do it just fine 😊 bonus points if the camera offers magnification and focus peaking to help with manual focus. The gx8 does both, its quite a common feature, but might be worth double checking before you buy whichever one you decide on

Would tend to agree, as someone who has owned a GX8 for 5 years and grew up on a Practika MTL5. The GX8 body is just right for my hands, rather than small; as ever the smallness comes largely from the lenses. It lives quite happily either on a PD capture clip or in one hand, which is really secure due to the grip.

Even after adding Lumix FF line to my MFT gear, the GX8 remains my absolute favorite. And I do use the articulating viewfinder A LOT. I get totally different photos and the joy of use with it. Being a huge fan of viewfinder shooting, the GX8 gives me the chance to get almost a TLR feel to the images. It also makes it easy to get the low angle shots without resorting to the washed out screen. (My eyesight also loves it much better). The GX8 is my go to for travel and at times event photography. I just with Panasonic came out with a mk2 that is not the downgraded GX9.
