After watching his videos on the US/Mexico border I knew he was a true humanitarian journalist at heart. He has a way of making connections and getting the raw, emotional truth out of people that is hardly found anywhere else. As someone who grew up in south Texas I know a lot about the immigration situation and I know a lot of the people directly impacted by it. Peter was able to portray the situation not only far more accurately than mainstream media, but on a much more personal level at that. The world need more folks like him.

My grandparents came to Milwaukee from Germany in 1924. My dad was born in Milwaukee in 1928. They lived on the northside, and grandpa was a baker in a northside German bakery. Although they left the city and settled in northern WI in the 1930's, dad ended up moving back and graduating from Marquette in the 1950s. You can take the boy out of Milwaukee, but you can't take Milwaukee out of the boy. Last year, at the age of 93, my father gave me a Milwaukee tour of everywhere he lived, worked and studied. I saw the first apt. my parents rented on Wisconsin Avenue near Marquette (across the street from an old Turner Hall which is now a concert venue). Dad passed away this summer at age 94. He always spoke so lovingly about Milwaukee. Thanks for taking me back to Milwaukee, Peter.

What a load of nonsense. Naming issues and showing how they affect people negatively is what unites folks to improve them. "Kia boys" are STILL a problem in Milwaukee. Two summers ago I literally watched a group of teen boys crash a kia soul into a student housing building right across the street from my building. About 12 teenage boys all scrambled out of the vehicle and took off running in all directions. And I live close to downtown in the Avenues West neighborhood. It's also known as the "University District" or the "Marquette District" because it's where most of the student housing for Marquette University students is located. I'm still in this neighborhood simply because it's centrally located and pretty easy to get to where I need to go. I'm a Chicago native but moved away about a decade ago for work. When a change happened in my life, I wanted to go back to Illinois but just couldn't afford to live there anymore. A friend offered me a place to stay until I "got back on my feet" here in Milwaukee and I've been here ever since. Granted, it's not Chicago by any stretch but it has enough city conveniences that it's habitable and the cost of living couldn't be beat at the time I moved here. Lately, rents have been skyrocketing. The building I'm currently in was sold about a year ago to an investment firm in Chicago. They've been "renovating" empty units and are now charging 110% more than my current rent. Eventually, they will force residents to have to choose to either move into one of the renovated units and pay the exorbitant increase in rent or move out. At that point, I've already decided, I'm going to buy an RV and become a digital nomad. I already work remotely, so taking my work on the road won't be all that difficult. I just hate the work/rent cycle and have nothing to show for it. Milwaukee saved my life, but like every place the cost of living is out of control. What I have found that I really do like about Milwaukee is its art scene. It's had a really thriving art community for a good 30 years now and it's very art friendly. Visual art, theatre, music, you name it. I have a friend who has a puppet troupe, I have other friends who run a theatre company, and others still who are local musicians. I think that's Milwaukee's saving grace. The vibe is pretty funky and I do enjoy discovering new areas of this city. Milwaukee isn't an instant "WOW" factor, its just there, but when you get into the city, get to know the people, it really is kinda cool.

I lived in Milwaukee for three years, and its an underrated city for sure. The downtown area is pretty nice, and aside from pockets of bad neighborhoods, the surrounding areas are nice too. It is basically a very small Chicago, complete with a lakefront.

For someone looking to move to Milwaukee, which areas would you recommend to move to/recommend to avoid?
@kellrockets10111 ай бұрын
@@Mytoekhandria steer clear of the northside inner city of Milwaukee for living purposes. But the suburbs in the northside are really nice. I would recommend trying to find a place in the suburbs for living. Look into Wauwatosa, Whitefish Bay, Bayside, Shorewood, Hales Corners if you want really nice, very suburban areas. Look into Bayview if you like the hipster trendy scene, but also a nice area with good restaurants and activities. And look into Greenfield, Cudahy, South Milwaukee if you want that southside middle class area. I guess it would depend on your income and what you're willing to pay fore rent/mortgage. he mentioned something about those apartments in the video being like 950-1500 a month. That's grossly underestimating the cost of those a month. rent for those downtown apts close to the lakefront and downtown scene would be well over $2500-3000 a month probably. The suburbs if buying a house can be unreal for prices and property taxes for even buying a ranch or cape cod type house. All of the suburbs I mentioned are all part of the county of Milwaukee, and what make up Milwaukee...everything is accessible in Milwaukee within 5-15 mins from the suburbs.

I moved from Chicago suburbs to Milwaukee in 2015. As a new college grad, I was extremely impressed with the affordability in comparison to what my friends in Chicago were paying. My first apartment was $730 a month including heat and water on the east side. On street parking was about $50 a year, no tolls to pay driving around, sales tax 5% vs 10% in Chicago. However, I now live in the burbs raising small children because the petty crime in Milwaukee as noted in this video is unbearable. I was side swiped by a reckless driver once and that was enough for me with kids. Milwaukee, you have a special place in my heart and I will always drive downtown for festivals and the unique arts scene, but safety is paramount. No city can survive with the likes of kia boys blowing through red lights causing mayhem. Please focus on reckless driving and underserved youth. It's perhaps a nationwide problem, but especially bad in Milwaukee. People deserve to feel safe as a basic human right of passage living in any city. It may start in the home, but raising quality citizens sometimes means actually holding firm on laws and punishing those who violate others to the fullest extent.

Interesting choice of local "host" to work with. Dude has been hustling his merch for decades; a lot of the locals know him as the "too much rock for one hand" guy. He's friends with the people who own the restaurant they ate at, just "happened" to run into his artist friend, the soccer guy (wearing one of Fred's jerseys) knew who Santenello was before he walked up and tried to brush it off with "everyone here is named Peter", they wind up at a dance studio where people are wearing his merchandise and have people in the background who have modeled clothing on his websites, etc. He not only has an interest in the city but a significant financial incentive to monetize that interest. It’s soooo crazy being from a city in Wisconsin (not even 1/10th the size of MKE but top ten in the state pop.) seeing people think of Milwaukee as “small” in any way! I think of Milwaukee as a HUGE city and going there is always memorable, even just driving thru. As a kid going on field trips to Milwaukee Zoo or the Museums downtown I was always hyped up to be going to the ‘big city’ and looked forward to it for weeks. now getting to go to bucks games and visit friends in college it’s a bit different, dealing with traffic that has no patience, and paying $50 to park.

As a Milwaukee resident for almost 45 years. This dude is sugar coating stuff, he lives in the gentrification east side of hipsters which is no different than the redlining he complained about. They price out all the poors . I grew up in the real Milwaukee, Westland projects been shot at atleast 4 times held a friend with his brain hanging out. I had a pretty small friends group maybe 10 -12 people so far I've Lost 4 friends to murder Have 3 friends in jail for life for murder. The only ones doing good are the ones that got out of the city. Redlining is needed otherwise the whole state would be a dangerous shithole with no refuge
@ryanhartley147111 ай бұрын
I also felt that way, it's almost like he tried to hide what the city really can be like. This video didn't feel as genuine as some of his other videos because the guide was more promoting the city for the good things than the real things.
@darkskinwhite11 ай бұрын
im with you until the last part. redlining itself actually contributes to things like crime, illness, decaying infrastructure, etc. in many different ways which i wont write a book about here but it creates hyper localism. surely you know people who were regular people, went to jail & came out full-on criminals. same thing happems with poor people in ghettos. but like physics, when things spread out they dissipate. most of the state is woods & farmland. that wouldnt all of the sudden change if there were no ruminants of redlining. trapping people where they dont belong, or trapping them period creates contentions. its not good for the people on the other side either. they think "good, we'll keep those poor people away from us" but it ends up making your area *overly* expensive while also keeping the working class out which keeps the jobs out which means your section of the city is like a house of cards that will inevitably fall at the end of the cycle. any city you ever go to you will find the import/export area (often on water or railroad) & the downtown will be built up around that area. directly behind that will be the ghetto. the "inner-city". over a long enough period of time the downtown area will continue to expand, the area around it becomes more valuable, & the ghetto gets pushed around. so in short they push the poor out of the way, then that land becomes valuable, they buy it for cheap because its the ghetto, push the poor out, the poor people drive the old community out of the new place & the working class (who built the city in the first place) get driven further & further out as the city expands. then the house of cards falls & what was once the "nice area" becomes ghetto. cycle repeats.

What we have here is a break down of the family. It is only now showing up because 4 generations of no dad's no church no neighborhood bonds. This grown mistrust between black and white people brought back by O Bama and his ilk. And industry being taxed to the point of just leaving or giving up and moving south. How many of those friends of yours had a solid family. This is the trucks of the matter. But no one will or even can address it. And when you got grandmother mother daughter and now a 15 year old daughter making babies without a man in the house. Your lost before your even a kid . It has to come from within ones own mind to change this behavior. Otherwise it just keeps getting worse.

Love the video but your tour guide missed an entire group. We often get lumped in with the Polish community. To find our heritage you should swing by Kaszube's Park on Jones Island is the smallest park in the county, perhaps not even as large as a city lot. It is meant to commemorate the people referred to as Kashubes, immigrants who settled on the island after being forced from northern Poland in the 1800s. The Kashubians (Kashubian: Kaszëbi; Polish: Kaszubi; German: Kaschuben),[2] also known as Cassubians or Kashubs, are a Lechitic (West Slavic) ethnic group native to the historical region of Pomerania, including its eastern part called Pomerelia, in north-central Poland.[3] Their settlement area is referred to as Kashubia. They speak the Kashubian language, which is classified as a separate language[4] closely related to Polish.

Always delighted to see someone talk impartially about Milwaukee! I moved here in 2014 (originally from Ohio), and I have fallen madly in love with this town. I worked in the service industry at places ranging from massive sports bars to a 100 year old family-owned German restaurant to bowling alleys before returning to school to finish a graduate degree, and I've gotten to experience so much this city has to offer (good and bad). It gets a really bad rap in the media, not for no reason sometimes, but there's so much more to this place than the crime. I'm job hunting now to start a career and I am desperately hoping I can find something in the area. I moved here originally without any ties so if I didn't like it I could just move on to the next adventure, but here I am over 9 years later and there's nowhere else I'd rather be. One added note, I'm not a soccer fan but there is a semi-pro NPSL soccer team in town. They play in Wauwatosa a couple miles west of downtown (just a few blocks west of where this video was shot), but there isn't a huge following unfortunately. Shoutout FC Milwaukee Torrent!

Don't forget Uihlein Soccer Park, either. I live near there, and the soccer games draw maybe a thousand people per day!

Milwaukee really has everything, yet it's not too much like a lot of big cities. I've traveled to most major cities in the US and Europe, but I'm always glad to get back home to Milwaukee!

I may be a bit biased because I've lived in Wisconsin for about 15 years, but Milwaukee is one of my favorite cities in the country. There is so much good food and so many great little shops, awesome architecture, museums, and art that I always find something new to do. It's a pretty great place to hang out for a weekend.

Oh boy, the number of people who absolutely hate Milwaukee in the state is insane. It's great to see someone that finally says they like it lmao.
@daveshmave3427 Жыл бұрын
@@flyingbanana4179 people who actually live in Milwaukee, love it. People that hate on Milwaukee are from mostly rural areas and some suburbs. Most of the people from the rural areas have probably never even been to Milwaukee. The local media is partly to blame for this, like he was talking about at the beginning of the video.

@@daveshmave3427 I feel like MOST Wisconsinites have been to Milwaukee at some point. The city isn't that great compared to smaller towns or even places like Appleton or Madison. Milwaukee has more overall diversity of stuff to do but some of the nicest people and best food you can have are in small backwater towns up near the Chain of Lakes or down around the Driftless.
@nstalker124611 ай бұрын
@@daveshmave3427 very true, I come from the twin cities area (Minneapolis St Paul) and moved out to western WI at a younger age. All of the stuff we see about Milwaukee is always bad and paint a bad picture. A lot of my extended family come from the Milwaukee area, I would still love to see it. It seems like an awesome city.

"Homicides are down"If by down you mean slightly less than last years ALL-TIME HIGH than yes,but on average over the last few years are waaaaaay higher than in the 60s 70s and 80s when there were maybe 20-30 homicides per year and Milwaukee was one of the safest large citites in America.
@flyingbanana417911 ай бұрын
For sure. The amount of homicides went down 24% from last year to date, and a lot of other crimes went down by large percentages as well but we need to work on reckless driving and vehicle theft because it's just going through the roof especially with the kia boys around

You are on the reverse of the route my boys and I traveled last December as we traversed from Springfield, Missouri, directly to downtown Milwaukee and then we went to Chicago with a couple of brief visits along the way. I have been to Milwaukee many times, and a trip worth taking from Milwaukee is to Lake Geneva-especially during pumpkin harvest season. I’ve said for years, the most friendly airport in the world is in Milwaukee, and as public spaces go, their basketball arena, Fiserv Forum, definitely rivals the airport in terms of friendly, helpful atmospheres. Love this city!

Thank you for the suggestion. My wife and I are planning on travelling to America next summer from England. We’ve now added Milwaukee to our bucket list and will definitely visit your recommendation. Thank you

@@mm9492 Yes, you have to spend some time in Lake Geneva and neighboring Lake Delevan if you're anywhere near Milwaukee. If you have more time, check out Madison - or actually better yet, Door County, north of Milwaukee!
