Why to Consider Braided Fishing Line for Cranking

Crankbait fishing legend David Fritts challenges our belief system on the proper line for crankbait fishing, and strongly recommends you to try small diameter braided line for several reasons. This may be surprising coming from the old school cranking legend, but he supports his case by discussing factors like pound test rating-to-line diameter, and how this affects lures action, casting distance, and the ability to control big fish around cover. Fritts also explains how extreme sensitively and lack of stretch have significantly upped his hookup and boating ratio.

I cranked with braid for years and I felt every pebble and caught a ton of fish! Also when you stall the bait, it stops dead. Its great to use when just using a deep diver as a search tool to find submerged cover.

I fish the CA Delta and crank miles of rip rap. I throw all of my crankbaits on 30lb power pro and would never throw them on any other line. The sensitivity and strength to diameter is perfect for getting max depth and power.

Crankbait g.o.a.t. I learned from watching you back in the late 80s shoving your rod down in the water deep as you could to get that bait just a little deeper than everyone else and you won that B.A.S.S. tournament event. I went out with a white Poes crankbait and it worked. Had one on the deck of my boat ever since. Thank you for teaching my generation how to use one

Fritts, I totally agree with you. Last year I lost to many big bass. With the 12 pd mono. I spent all winter switching to 20 and 30 pd braid. I caught 38 largemouth in 1 hr and 15 minutes. On Easter day! With mono. That just wouldn't have happened. The Bass caught them selves. On every cast. It was the greatest fishing day in my life. Oh and I was bank fishing too. Keep up the awesome video's. Shawn

good to see someone talking sense. i've used floro, several different brands, and its all garbage as far as im concerned. Its difficult to tie and requires complicated knots, has way too much stretch (more than some brands of mono I have seen the independent research) and you get one nick in it its done. as far as what kvd recommends, or any pro, they are paid to push certain and new techniques, that's how the pro/sponsor relationship works. KVD talks about running his nitro boat like its e greatest ever, but I wouldn't spend my money on one. Im always happy to listen to discussions but, I'll make up my own mind about what works for me. something else to consider, if fish are so scared off by braided line, why has anyone ever caught anything on an umbrella rig?

I use braid for almost everything I fish. The sensitivity, and the longevity of it cant be beat. Ive actually done underwater tests with whats more visable 12 pound fluorocarbon or low vis braid that is 6lb test diameter (20lb braid). The thin braid is less visable its half the thickness of the fluoro. I even use it for shakey heads and if I really need to ill tie on a leader. Im also a clear reservoir california fisherman in very pressured lakes. Im also old enough to remember days before fluoro or braid, everything was done with mono.. Ill never use fluoro again after breaking off that wall hanger I lost, that day still haunts me

Pretty neat theory on the braided line crankin setup. They've been preaching the softer shock absorbancy of glass rods and mono line for crankin for years now, but I can definitely see the benefit of the lighter braid in rockier or more "snaggy" areas and let the rods softness do the work... I like it! Plus seeing Fritts (as this would be a Berkley promo video) using the lower line Berkley E-motion rods vs. higher end Lews rods as his other sponsor, is a nice extra little tidbit in this video too.

ok, and I gotta put my 2 cents in on the negativity on the replies... #1 to each thier own #2 Fritts is known as a crankin guru despite what everybody thinks is the Pro level norm, and yes they CAN afford to change line every outting, and yes they'll also preach checking line and retying often too, vs. weekenders and casual fisherman changin line maybe once or twice/year. #3 as a bank fisherman, fishing either heavy rock on a river, or thick grass on a lake, I'm a big fan of braid to flouro leader, which kinda sits in the middle of the strength/invisibility/floating-sinking line debate. Works for me and only re-tye the leader, and line lasts an entire year that way. I may apply that to the crankin end of my arsenal... IF IT WORKS... WHY NOT!

Wired2Fish I have heard horror story of guys breaking braided line less then 50 lbs on baitcasting rods when setting the hook on fish, can you explain how cranking with it will not warrant the same result?
@longrider692001
@longrider692001 7 жыл бұрын
@Tennessee Bass Fisherman, I would say something wasn't right in the 1st place. Braid is typically 2-3x stronger than mono or flouro, so there were probably line imperfections, or too stiff a rod, etc. and there really shouldn't be a "hookset" on a crankbait fish, more of a sweep, or let them set the hook themselves anyway. That's really why they've preached mono and glass composite rods for so long. I've caught 2-4 lbers in thick grass from the bank fishing on 10 lb braid with an 8 lb flouro leader on light whippy spinning tackle and not broken off ever. I'm really considering doing the same with 15-20 lb braid with a 10 lb leader on a medium baitcast setup for my rockier shorelines of the Allegheny river up here in PA. that way my line will last longer/stronger, and only need to check/retie/ replace the leader occassionally.
@DanRichardFishing
@DanRichardFishing 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry but I primarily tube fish in the St. Lawrence and I use 20# to 25# braid with a 15# fluoro leader and set the hook HARD and have never broken off on hook set EVER. If your braid is breaking on hookset, you either have junk line or really old worn out and brittle line. And if I'm snagged and have to break off, the palomar knot will break before the braid or leader knot ever goes. My favorite braid would have to be Power Pro Slick and Samurai. As for fluoro for cranks, I just can't... I refuse to use line conditioners and all that junk and I find it loves to backlash. I use it for leaders and that's it.

I see where you’re coming from, but I’ve heard from numerous sources and personal experiences have taught me that whenever you’re using a treble hooked bait, you want to have some stretch in the line/ give in your rod/ and give in the drag. Plus fluorocarbon doesn’t stretch THAT much so you still get sensitivity, but without ripping the trebles from the fish like how you hooked the first fish in this video

When I started throwing a chatterbaits I was losing a lot of fish, swapped from a fast to moderate action and I rarely loose any. Most of the time I have my line break I’m using braid and I stand there and watch my lure fly way off into the lake kissing $15 goodbye (if I’m lucky) I use what I use because it’s what works for me and I haven’t had the success with braid I’ve had with fluoro. 🤷🏻‍♂️

He really doesn't understand the difference in diameter between mono and braid. He's nowhere close to accurate. He's so far off it's scary, and this is weird because every type of braid I've seen says right on the spool what the mono equivalent as, and with any good braid, braid is about four times as thin. I just loaded a spool with fifteen pound Spiderwire braid, and it has the same diameter as four pound mono. Anyway, I understand why he likes no stretch line, but he needs to understand that sometimes no stretch is a bad thing. And it's silly to say you can't set the hook with it when cranking. Anglers, including him, have been catching bazillions of fish for a lot of decades while cranking mono. nd I don't know what he's doing to wear out the fluorocarbon so fast, but he's either using the completely wrong type of fluoro, or he's casting ridiculously hard, and if so, braid should be wearing out faster than the fluoro. I think he tried braid, got good results, and went completely overboard. It happens. But the simple fact is that while mono does stretch, that stretch means the line is a heck of a lot more forgiving, so you won't lose as many fish by ripping out the hook, or breaking a knot, etc. Fluorocarbon even more so. I've yet to see quality fluorocarbon wear out as he claims. Mono that's coated with fluorocarbon wears out fast, but not one hundred percent fluorocarbon. Even quality braid, on the other hand, wears pretty fast. Some of the best starts shedding after a couple of weeks, and respooling good braid is not cheap. And, of course, just saying "mono" means nothing. Mono comes in even more types and quality than braid and fluorocarbon put together.

I use braid and flouro for cranking. I don’t pull hooks out. There are no absolutes in fishing. Do what you are confident in. But to belittle and put down David fritts, as a true pioneer of the sport, speaks volumes on your actual knowledge through experience, all while elevating the impression you fall victim to advertising and doing and regurgitating what you are told. No disrespect. There is no absolutes.

He never said that he was or wasn’t using a mono leader. I throw about everything that is moving with braid to mono. Mono is a great shock absorber. It is really good for a bite you aren’t expecting so you set the hook rather than letting the braid set the hook with the no stretch quality with it.

When fishing with braided line do you have to tie on a mono or flouro. Leader? Does the visibility of the line really effect the fish ?
@andywilliamson7846
@andywilliamson7846 7 жыл бұрын
Just depends on the situation. When retrieving crankbaits, fast to medium fast, it probably does not matter too much. A leader is more often used with other types of lures. There is plenty of info out there discussing this subject.

It is interesting that David only recently "discovered" the benefits of braid, which has been out since 1993 in the "superline" form and long before that in the original form. Also, the first bass he catches in the video was hooked in a SOFT part of the jaw, not hard part as he says. Now, with all this criticism, I still love and respect him, Lew's reels and rods, his non-infinite anti-reverse "theory", etc. Go, David!!

I use straight braid on everything just about had zero issues with fish "seeing" the braid I think is more of a paranoia thing or Crystal clear water thing I bank fish mostly everywhere and use spinning reel with copoly and baitcaster with braid I use everything under the sun on straight braid never had an issue , caught my PB bass 9.7lbs on straight braid Texas rigs 1/2oz lead worm weight 4 size hook and dbomb creature bait no leader , semi good water clarity so I'm a true believer that you don't need a leader it's just another component to fail

flouro is a must. your crankbaits will get down to its fullest potential, it's invisible, abrasion resistant, durable. with braid youll throw more baits out of their mouth. adjust your cast if you throw too hard. it's not that big of a adjustment to control.

I do have a question, and it may be a stupid one, but whats the difference in using braid with a softer action rod or mono with a stronger rod? Seems both would have some "give" and both lines float.
@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 7 жыл бұрын
Braid on a stiffer rod is a recipe for pulling the hooks out a lot on fish. Mono on a soft rod works fine but the bend of the rod and stretch of the line can make getting a good hookset hard on a really long cast. That's primarily why he likes braid now. He gets a good hookset even on a really long cast and in deep water.

The only thing he has wrong is his Braid to Mono/Flouro size. 40 braid is 10lb diameter Mono/Flo Mono Stretches. Flouro Stretches. The difference is Mono snaps back and Flouro degrades with every stretch. It doesnt rebound back it stretches thinner and thinner.

Yes, we were filming with a bunch of Berkley pros at El Salto Mexico. Fritts was contacting of lot of brush with his cranks, yet still able to retrieve them when snagged by straight pulling enough to straighten the hooks a little. I then noticed the braid and we banged out this video. He was always such an old school cranking purist, so I was a little surprised by this content as well, but some good points and proof that most anglers are always evolving and questioning so called "rules" in fishing. -Ryan
