Should I aerate first then dethatch second?

I would recommend dethatching first then do the aeration (lightly before aeration to help soften ground)

Fall I always recommend is the best time to aerate and dethatch the lawn (same timing for this video also).

When did you do this renovation? I am assuming it was done sometime in Sept? I ask because KBG takes several weeks to germinate well and the cold temps in Chicago and leaves falling on your lawn will prevent the lawn from fully growing prior to winter.

chris ryan i did this in the third week of September, by now my grass is almost at its matured height already. Yes you are right, otherwise kbg wouldn't be germinated in time. Temperatures are already dropping pretty quickly here for the fall / winter!

I would detach before you add dirt for relevelling because if not the ground might be spongy due the high thatch base. Then I would aerate for deeper holes for aeration, lastly I would then level with new soil mixture.

No you want to leave the cores on the lawn after aeration, because they will breakdown naturally and helping fill in and smooth out the lawn naturally.

I need a little help, yesterday while detaching and scarifying I noticed grubs. I was planning on aeration and overseeding my lawn. What should I do. I picked up a bag of grub killer from the big box store. Can I put this down along with new seeds and fertilizer and tenacity?
