I have no issue with Tom Allen but with the talent he had, I think the D should have been a more lock down defense than it proved to be. So I think despite a #7-#8 defense, there are better options out there than Tom Allen.

He was forced to coach from upstairs in the booth after two games. Tom Allen did not want to do that. That's why Dan Conner was used to communicate the plays to the defense.

DC make sense to work from the booth because the defense has to react to the offense so seeing the entire field I would think would help. Of course this is coming from someone who has never coached football so I am working g off of assumptions.

By this same thought process, you could say the same thing about when we lost Brent Venables and Wea Goodwin took over. Wes should have been able to just piggy back what Brent built right? Wrong. We got significantly worse every year since on defense. Coaching matters.

@ first of all you don’t understand my thought process at all. I never said coaching doesn’t matter. But anytime you get a new coach, the previous coaches ideas and philosophy will carry over in the next year, if the roster remains basically the same. If Tom Allen stayed at PennState I’ve no doubt we would have seen a drop off in defense in the following years. Maybe he just wasn’t a good fit here. IMO he just isn’t a good coach

Cultural disconnect? Not challenging that theory, but if that is true, what about Clemson 19-year-olds will make the situation better? This likely comes down to a) money, b) family pressure, and c) Beaver Stadium coaches box was embarrassing in 1992, let alone 2025.

I think this was in the making before the ND playoff game because of the way that game was played by the defense in the second half as he made no corrections. Also he was handed a great defense from Manny and he had to do nothing to have a great year. I didn't even know why they hired him as he never really had a winning season with IU ! Thus why he got fired from there and I think PS needed a DC and he was available right then !

Well clemson returns 9 starters on both sides of the ball, including a QB who had the 2nd most TDs in 2024. I think these teams are very similar from a returning talent standpoint. I think allen looks at it as clemson is better offensively, and if he can bring that jump to the clemson D that is desired, they could win the whole thing.

If Franklin's salary wasn't so much, I could perhaps, and only perhaps, understand why the powers that be at Penn State are tolerant of very good at 10 wins a season but never great and winning the conference or a national championship. But his salary to me means win big or else. You could pay a lot of other coaches a lot less to win 7-9 games a season and go nowhere.

To me, Franklin has a lot less control than one would think for a head coach. If he was in that much control, then he would have not permitted a pass play call with 40s left in the Orange Bowl and gone into OT.
