I posed that question to my 70yr old mother who’s a teacher…She said “Historically blacks were relegated to those careers and doing away with trades in the school was to not type cast our selves.” I encourage any career field that can enable a livable wage for a traditional 4 person house; preferably with a focus on STEM which is were the most demand/money/need is.

Something everyone is overlooking: most D1 athletic departments don’t make money. 93% lose. Most HBCUs are just concerned with being in the black each season. Sinking millions into a stadium is a fool’s errand. The $80M in debt the university could spend on a new facility would be better spent on new academic programs or better academic and housing facilities. Chasing football money when those programs don’t even add up to a net positive for PWIs is backwards thinking.

My twin sister attended an HBCU (UAPB, SWAC), I attended a PWI (University of Arkansas, SEC). We're first generation college students and both have PhDs (I graduate next month). We both research HBCUs and have seen it all. Although I agree funding is needed immensely at HBCUs, I totally disagree with his comparing HBCUs to Ivies. Ivies have billion dollar endowments that they've worked off of for generations/centuries. HBCUs and Ivies do not have the same applicant pool and therefore do not have the generational wealth entering and exiting their campuses. Comparing the two is impossible without incorporating other aspects of the equation, many of which are too vast to even attempt.

The fact that you insinuate HBCUs are collectively the same and that Jackson State is at the same academic and athletic level as a D3 school also proves my point. Furthermore, the D3 schools you speak of are likely historically white with endowments much larger than HBCUs for the same reasons mentioned in my initial response. If I’m wrong, please feel free to provide an example.

I really liked the middle of this video. I have never been a huge sports fan, and I went to a non-dominant school for my education (CSU). I have never understood why colleges are so focused on athletics when, a majority of students aren't there to chase them, but rather to get skills they need in the "capitalism gone amok" society. When Bomani talks about an HBCU needing to continue to do what's best for the students, not the athletic department, it was nice to know that there's a shared idea about that somewhere out there. And it's not sports like rowing teams or field hockey that eats up the budget. Schools are over spending on low level to mid-level sport programs - bad investments. And it's not just small schools mishandling budgets. When Syracuse won the title, they got a ton of media money, the coach got $4mm salary and in two years tuition went up to over $35k. Make it make sense? A school's primary focus to attract students cannot result in increased tuition to pay for sports programs. I am not sure how to defend schools spending less money on academia and more money on sports. Schools should no longer be schools but rebrand as sport clubs with academic options. That makes more sense.

Schools can have great sports programs and great chemistry programs. Many of them do currently (JSU included). And it typically costs more to run a large athletic program than it does to run a chemistry department. This is basic math. I’m not even sure what you are arguing… My point is that the chemistry vs. athletics thing is ridiculous.

The SEC reported $729 Million in total revenue in 2020 and it distributed roughly $45.5 million to each of the 14 members. Off sports 😳😳 In 2021 the conference made $777.8 mill, each 14 members got $54 mill each. Just off sports.....😮

Why does it have to be either or? Why can’t we push to have both. If sports has the potential to bring in money both short term and long term and academics is more of a future investment, institutions should focus on both. The problem with focusing just on academics is academics doesn’t being in any money you at least up front. Getting the top math or science mind is great for the student but no one is buying tickets to see them do well on their finals. There needs to be a strategy in place that allows both to benefit and it’s going to time because the HBCU’s at large are down bad financially.

This segment he did was kinda duplicitous because he started out obviously talking about Jackson State and the SWAC conference without referencing them by name but then he used Howard to counter the argument by bringing up their recent issues with molding and having rats with an infestation of other health hazards. 💯 Football and basketball programs are money makers for D1 schools. Alumni and donors who may give to those programs can be enticed to give to the overall school budget. Kansas basketball booster donor also gave money for a new campus library and research wing. These examples go on across many PWIs. The framing of JSU AD and Prime only caring about football is deceitful. Coach Prime has talked about helping out other athletic programs, getting alumni to buy in to give more, and fixing other buildings on campus. And he wants other HBCUs to rise as well. Bo is right, HBCUs have poor maintenance. Schools get donations but somehow administrators get away with the trickle down theory. Bo seemed more concerned about most highly rated high school athletes continuing going to PWIs to make the league; instead of returning back to HBCUs to build them up. Bo wants PWIs to benefit from our athleticism more than our own 🤦🏾‍♂️ HBCUs been graduating lawyers and doctors. 2/3 or black doctors received completed undergrad at an HBCU. This has been going on for decades and the schools have stayed in shambles. It’s not bad for a 🐐to come to an HBCU to help funding for all HBCUs.

If you get the best black athletes at HBCU’s, you can not only generate money for the school but also the entire community! Other businesses and commercial builders will come to Jackson and build around that school. Deion is giving a blueprint for all HBCU’s to get those RESOURCES black people need by using FOOTBALL to get 80K in the seats! Deion said JSU generated 30 Million last year for the city of Jackson! It’s bigger than Football, but the irony is that’s exactly what we need to move the economic needle !!!

I don't disagree with that HBCUs need better science labs but how does he profess where the money comes from? I'm %100 sure that the administration from most HBCUs want better academic facilities but unless watching med students in chem labs becomes a spectator sports that brings in revenue more attractive sports teams that can draw huge crowds and sell merchandise is the way to get resources that can pay for those academic facilities that are in need of upgrading is the way. Oprah went to Tennessee State and let's see if they have any state of the art science labs or even a broadcast journalism department that rivals any school in the country, if not then let the football team be great and begin to generate revenue for the sports program and the rest of the school as well. Hopefully the football team can produce so NFL players that succeed in the league and they give back generously to the school that can help those other departments get better. I bet all the money that Alabama generates for the school get used to build the best academic facilities in the state of Alabama. Unless Bomani is talking solutions then all this is a segment for just commentary for entertainment. Plus, those college athletes are also students and just maybe they want to have the HBCU experience as well and be treated like they matter for more than just their ability to run, jump and catch.

This entire video is ignorant. The revenue that is generated at HBCUs is filtered right back into the local Black communities and laboratory schools they directly serve. If HBCUs can create massive revenue through athletics, the Black community greatly benefits. The PWIs amassed most of the great facilities (academic and athletic) off of the backs of Black student-athletes, therefore, the same type of external FUNDING can be utilized at HBCUs to renovate existing dorms/facilities but also to improve the entire physical plant.

Some HBCUs are D-I's (The SWAC and the MEAC, ). The CIAA and SIAC schools are D-II's. In football DI HBCUs are known as FCS (formerly I-AA) schools. In basketball, they are DI and of course as we all know, schedule Power 5 DI's for money games and often play the biggest schools in the NCAA Division I Tournament.
