We had a tortoise that lived in our yard when I was a kid living in Arizona. It was a free-roamer- may have been an escaped pet. It found our yard and lived there quite happily. We used to put out bowls of food for it and it was quite fun to watch pottering about the yard. Clint isn’t exaggerating that they follow you around- this tortoise used to come out from under the deck when we were outside to say “hello”. We named it Milton. When we eventually moved, we made sure the new owners were aware of it and as a condition of the sale had to look after him. For all I know it could still be there.

An Egyptian tortoise is probably one of my dream pet reptiles, and their conservation status really is a shame. In the future, could you rate a newt species like the fire-belly, eastern, or alpine newts? They’ve got nice colors, interesting behaviors, and a small size wrapped up in a really reasonable package that really isn’t like any other herp in the hobby(almost like a tiny semiaquatic to aquatic lizard), yet are still criminally underrated.

Funnily enough, a Hermann’s Tortoise was my first reptile, probably not the best for a first time reptile keeper, but she introduced me to how amazing these animals really are. She’s been with me for nearly 12 years now, and since then I’ve welcomed a Leopard Gecko, Ball Python and Western Hognose Snake into my small buy growing collection. I agree in that they aren’t the most fun to keep, as they aren’t keen on being handled and generally prefer being left alone, but they are incredibly rewarding to keep.

I've lived with tortoises during my entire life (I'm going to be 30 this year) thanks to the fact my siblings were given a pair of Chaco tortoises 4 years before I was born. We don't know their hatching dates (it was the 80s after all), considering they weren't hatchlings (as far as I know) the male must be around 40 years old by now, and still going strong (the female unfortunately passed away a few years ago), but the male is like having a third older sibling for me. And I will never forget the day he knocked down my mother's Christmas tree. That being said, while not threatening, they can be quite destructive. They are fond of trying to get into places they are not supposed to reach... and it's easy to forget with their slow movement that they are strong. 1:11 Poor tortoise wants to eat that banana but is getting scared from your hand movements :P

I'd love to see more turtle videos on your channel! Lately I can't keep my mind off them. I think they're really amazing, cute animals, and honestly their lifespans are a huge draw...losing dogs to old age over the years has really taken a toll on me, so much so that I almost feel like I won't be able to have them anymore. But a turtle is a pet you can grow old with! And the fact that many of them are herbivores is another big plus--I feel bad enough for the crickets and mealworms I feed our bearded dragon. So I'm seriously considering a tortoise for a pet, but I'd like to learn more so I know exactly what I'd be signing up for for potentially the rest of my life. Maybe another video on sulcatas or not-russian Russian tortoises? Or box turtles (I found one in our yard not too long ago)? Or a video highlighting tortoise rescues maybe?

Yes, yes, yes! We adopted a 5 yr old Greek ibera over a year ago now and just adore him. He's rather easy to keep, really. Good UVA/UVB and heat source at good temp and varied greens for diet. He cute to watch while he eats. Mylo chirps / clicks while he enjoys his warm soaks. And it's super fun to watch him explore our home (supervised), I keep an eye on him at all times because he really can move! We also just built him an outdoor 'playpen' so he can catch some summer sun on nice days. Love to see him burrow, with his little shell-bum sticking out of the dirt, as he's naturally inclined to do. Added bonuses that makes tortoises so cute, at least our little ibera, that little pink tongue 😛 and tortoise bum scoots (wiggles).

Thank you for this video!! As a child we used to have pet turtles. My father likes reptiles, and so we got a dessert tortoise. I would say that they arent really the best pets for young children, (Like I was when we had turtles lol) but they are a VERY kind hearted animal usually. I have fond memories as a kid feeding mangoes to our dessert tortoise who's name was Ken. Tortoises specifically are VERY calm, easy going, kind pets. As a kid, our two tortoises named Tuckie and Ken NEVER tried to bite me, or attack me, even when I was a rowdy young child. Most important thing I would tell a new owner is, that they are AMAZING escape artists, and for this reason, unfortunate a few of our turtles/tortoises from my childhood had unfortunate ends...

Before moving to the US I had a red footed tortoise in Venezuela that I loved. I had her since I was 3 and at that time I named her something randomly woth my kid imagination: Vicky Coco. I had a small terrarium with a plate for food and another for water since I lived in a bulding and not a house with a yard. And since she was just born when I got her it was enough space for her. Remember watching movies with her by picking her and caressing her shell (sometimes to her displeasure and her telling me by peeing on me) and always giving her headpats with my finger and her even raising her mead to ask for more. For all intent and purposes, she was a dog that didn't need to go out. Ate vegetables that we had leftover from any salads or any spare fruit on the fridge and would outlive me by decades. I sadly had to let her go when I moved out of Venezuela to my cousin. I miss her and if I can't get her back atleast I've been tinking of having another one...

A pair of tortoises ended up being the perfect only reptiles/ pets for me. They are cute, interesting, kind of affectionate in their own way, they keep you always learning new things (cuz they are kind of DIY animals when it comes to habitats), they most likely will be with me forever because of their long lifespan, their care can be automated in alot ways in case you need to be away for a bit, and unlke some pets they don't demand alot of attention (emotionally). Although I do want to get a German Shepherd again to hang out with them in the near future.

They're very intelligent pets and have such big personalities. I've got a 4yr old Russian tortoise that we've had since she was a couple of months old. I bought her as a present for my mum for her birthday. I've actually taught her a couple of tricks and even toilet trained her. She very rarely poos in her enclosure and when she's out, she'll do her business on a piece of tissue. I used to spend so much time with her but don't live with mum anymore, but when I did, she was always out of the enclosure with me, when in kitchen and living room. She is so gentle and has never bit me. I hand feed her all the time and have even tried it with the tiniest pieces of food and she takes it off tip of my finger with her tongue lol. I highly recommend getting one, but only one because they're not particularly that good with others, especially if you get two males.

I kept a pet American toad for the last couple years in a huge fish tank that I made into a terrarium with a metal screen lid. Unfortunately he passed away about a month ago, and since then I’ve been trying to research a new pet we could add to our family in his absence. I would _love_ to be able to get a tortoise, but my tank is 12.5” x 48” for the floor size, and 21” tall, so it seems woefully undersized for the generally accepted minimum floor size of 48” x 48”. Tortoises themselves are also a lot of money, as opposed to my chunky toad boy who was wild caught. He also loved to be handled and was such an adorable little glutton. He would eat right out of our hands. Another thing I’d be worried about with a tortoise is that it might not really like attention and physical affection from us. I’ve been looking into bearded dragons and painted agamas as well, and we always have a $7 anole or two from the local pet shop if all else fails, though we obviously can’t handle those, we’d basically just be looking at them, lol. To anyone who read this comment.. Do you have a suggestion for my family? For my tank size? Something that likes being handled and is relatively easy to care for?

I love the bloopers at the end! They are always so great, and honestly, even if I know everything that he’s about to say, in the video, I stay till the end! If you don’t like tortoises, I don’t want you in my life. Lol. 😂

I loved petsitting in high school for a neighbor who had a couple a russian tortoises, they were so much fun to interact with and I was in love with both of them. also during that week I was in my french class and my teacher confidently proclaimed that she could teach us the french version of any animal sound, so ofc I asked what sound tortoises make in french. probably the closest I've ever gotten to being hit by a teacher, she was not amused lol

I saw a red ear slider yesterday while mountain biking. He was so curious and expressive. I think turltes are smarter than given credit.

You never met my Aunt Jo. She hated tortoises - screeching in terror hate. Of course, her brother's 4 children, of which I was one, loved all animals. We took acclimating her to any and all reptiles as a fun challenge. 😂😂😂

I think you missed a pro: you can put little blue, orange, red, or purple wraps around their joints, and/or a little belt around their waist with a small weapon tucked in.

I dont remember when, but I saw a video from kamp Keenan where his Asian Water Monitor, Slinky, got out of his heated box during the winter, but he went to check the tortoises, and they were chilling in the 40 degree temps fine

Hello Client! I'm a huge fan of your videos and have been for a long time. You make, in my opinion; some of the best content on reptile keeping (including birds who are technically reptiles). I recently came across the video about keeping the flying gecko as a pet. In the video, you mentioned a lizard called Draco's flying dragon. I was interested that there is such a dragon-like lizard in existence; so I decided to learn about the lifestyle of the animal. In doing so I quickly discovered that the lizard is extinct, I was disappointed, to say the least but different sources said different things. I wanted to ask you If this was true. Thank you for making awesome content, I'm thoroughly surprised that the channel hasn't hit one mill but you will get there in no time! I wish you luck!
