Here in the States, outside of the Acela service area, very few people use Amtrak because it's so SLOOOWWW. (Even the Acela line and Brightline aren't all that fast compared to trains in Japan, China, and Western Europe.) Something else to note is that high speed rail in particular is only intended for regional use, NOT for transcontinental crossings.

I travelled from southern California to Chicago, up to Minneapolis, and back in the late 1980s. My wife and infant daughter went first, then we rode back together. It wasn't too bad, but even with a sleeper, forget sleeping, the tracks are just too bouncy. Also, a four hour late arrival in Chicago was not unusual. The train also had to stop for a forest fire in Wisconsin, and the train usually arrives in the middle of the night, which is often when the train travels through the most scenic territory. It was fun once...

Passenger rail has ALWAYS been subsidized, because people are more expensive to ship that coal and grain. They insist on seats, windows, lights, air, water, bathrooms, and smooth roadbeds, heavier cars with springs and shock absorbers to prevent them from being thrown around, and all these fripperies cost. A box car runs about $16,000 to $20,000. A passenger car? $400,000+
@ganeshrvgk5 жыл бұрын
You are totally incorrect !!! Not everyone in India travels in Maharaja Express, only Billionaire and Millionaire travel in that. In India trains are much cheaper than air fare. But there is a difference in the luxury with train and air fare, in train you have multiple class depends on $$. I paid $1.07 for 400KM travel in train on base class and in air, it is $100 for economy class.

Wish there was a way to generate competition for Amtrak to possibly lower the ticket prices and/or have a combo plan joining trains and plane travel. ALSO: a way to possibly bring your personal car with you. Yes it would be an additional fee but you wouldn’t need to RENT a car at your destination. Then ask if you can get a GROUP discount for lots of people traveling with you! Take a trip in the off season. Perhaps bring your own non- perishable food. That’s all I can think of for now. Good luck and Happy Travels!!
@RailRide5 жыл бұрын
1: No competion because it's not profitiable (when the freight railroads ran passenger trains, they were loss leaders propped up by mail-carrying contracts. When mail contracts were taken away in the 1960's, so many passenger services collapsed that Congress formed Amtrak out of what remained of privately operated passenger services) Trivia: Amtrak was set up to fail. It wasn't expected to last more than five years. But the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo came around before that came to pass and put the company in enough people's good graces that no politician wants to be the one responsible for killing it. 2: There's the Auto-Train between Lorton, VA and Sanford, FL. It even has the lowest losses of any long-distance train. Difficult to duplicate anywhere else due to its point-to-point nature (like an airliner), lack of equipment, lack of time-slots on the freight railroads, and lack of city pairs with large numbers of travelers at a distance sufficient would make such a service economically sound. 3: Group discounts are available. I've made use of them traveling to certain conventions. 4: There are "off seasons". You'll still have to reserve early 5: You can already bring your own food. Dining cars are set to be restricted to sleeper passengers in the fall of 2019 (if it hsan't already happened), so it's the cafe car or whatever you brought yourself. This is brought to you by a Congressional mandate to make food/beverage service zero-loss (historically, food-service on passenger trains has _never_ been a profit center, even pre-Amtrak, but facts and history never stopped Congress from enacting illogical mandates)
@matthewgoodman75883 жыл бұрын
Amtrak is weird because it is kinda treated like a public service. Congress says it must operate its unprofitable routes, but it also says it should still be running 'like a business.'
@martinv.3523 жыл бұрын
The vehicle cost per seat of trains is 15 to 30 times lower than planes, but trains are slower and as a result of the speed, less productive. Even if you consider this, the cost of planes per seat is 5 to 10 times higher. But planes don't need a track. This makes planes cheaper when having low passenger demand. When having a high demand, trains are cheaper, because the fix cost of the track is divided by more passengers. A separate track needs 16 Mio passengers per year when having only few bridges and tunnels, and much more if lots of expensive tunnels and brigdes are built and maintenanced. In the US, Florida Brightline is an efficient concept (low infrastructure costs). In my opinion, the california project would be OK if it would have less tunnels and bridges.

If air companies had the same taxes on their fuel as other sectors of transportation it would be much more expensive to travel by plane.
