I learned to add 3 line sizes to a trout spey. So a 3 TS is a 6 and a #4 is converted to a 7 SH rod.

Hi. Greetings from Denmark and thanks for all your trout spey videos. I have started using a trout spey setup for coastal seatrout fishing over here. Could you do a video on stillwater/salt application of trout spey? So far I have found the Rio trout spey shooting heads great for this type of fishing. They seem to work better for me than a skagit setup.

Hello Jesper. Skagit is generally best for swinging and casting flies in moving water. I generally prefer lines designed for single hand or integrated Scandi lines for casting when fishing stillwater. Of course if distance is a factor, a shooting head will win out. Sounds like you have found a good set up in the Rio Trout Spey heads. It can cost a bit of money to try different lines, but the results can be worth it. We will look toward doing a stillwater focused video in the future. Tight Lines!

can i use the lines from my single handed rods on these spey rods?

Absolutely Peter. It's all about grain windows. All fly rods have a grain window where they perform best. If you are unsure, you can check on the box or with the manufacturers website for the grain weight of any fly line and match it to the window recommended on the rod. In general, moving up 3 line weights (as Fly Fishing Chronicles notes in the comment above) is the rule for matching a single hand line to a spey rod. That said, individual preferences can vary and where things get interesting. Different rods have different actions. Different lengths have differing powers. This is likely why some people have very strong opinions about certain line match ups on certain rods. I often prefer more grains on my single hand rods (so I can easily single hand spey cast them) and less on my spey rods (I have a fast casting stroke) than manufacturers might suggest. The more you fish and the more options you play with, the more you will develop your own preferences. But the bottom line is, you have to start somewhere, so the 3 up rule is what I'd suggest. I'm starting to learn this discipline. The hardest part to me is using dry flies and laying down a very soft presentation.

Trout Spey is definitely not the ideal discipline for accurately and lightly presenting dry flies. However, in situations where you want to swing and skitter them, it can be ideal. Cast well to the side of the fish and then guide your flies to the target zone. Good luck, have fun and tight lines!

@Fred Telleen learning that, but what options do I have. Not wanting to bring 2 rods with me. I use a 5wt switch rod and commando heads system.
