This is why I spend so much time playing PS2 and prior games. They spent more time trying to make a game *feel* atmospherically good rather *look* so real I can count the number of hairs of the female protag's armpit. It's so hard to have both ultra-realistic and good gameplay, it's a dead giveaway these days that you just have to avoid eye candy borefests, they spent too much time trying to look good. I have so many hours of Castlevania games on my PS1 and Gameboy emulator because they actually feel good to play and soundtracks that replay in my head almost everyday

I've always believed art direction trumps fidelity. Highly stylized, distinct art styles are what stick in one's memory because they're unique. Mid game it might have been, but the cartoony characters of Brutal Legend still come up in my memory exactly the way they were on-screen. Meanwhile the "photorealistic" look so many AAA games go for legitimately all look the same to me. For the record, though, Bright Memory actually is really fun. It's like if Devil May Cry was an FPS.
