I think my biggest issue is that the trailers hyped it up as this very engaging revenge story about a man who lost his family to Alex Mercer (and let’s be honest, that trailer with “Hurt” by Johnny Cash has so much more emotion in it than the actual game. You see Heller literally weeping over his daughters corpse in the trailer and it’s only mentioned in the game, never shown). Plus I never understood WHY Mercer just decided to spread the infection again after spending the first game trying to stop it. It would’ve been more engaging if Mercer was still an anti-hero and there was a conflict between his methods and Hellers, instead of him just being a full fledged villain. But for all its flaws, it’s still got some fun elements to it, even if the first game is still superior gameplay and progression wise. Also…WHY THE HECK DID HIS DAUGHTER JUST APPEAR LIKE “HEY DAD, IM ACTUALLY ALIVE!”

The best part of Prototype was seeing the city progressively become more and more chaotic and dangerous over the course of the game to the point it resembles modern day New York. You start off with no infected and only police officers on the streets, and end the game with a constant full scale war between the infected and the military. Free roaming and observing battles between the military and infected was so much fun, NYC in Prototype 2 feels so lifeless and dull in comparison. To add even more disappointment, none of the new enemy types appear in free roam, so when you are done with the main story that’s the last time you’ll see cool monsters like the Goliath.

I agree that Prototype 2 is a let-down of a sequel, but there were aspects about it that I enjoyed. 1.) Being able to bind multiple powers to different buttons, allowing for mixing during combat. Its sad to see it replace multi-button combos with a "press or hold" style, but the idea to have ready-access to multiple powers simultaneously was nice. The powers changing appearance as they upgrade is always a major plus. 2.) I did enjoy the graphics and character/creature design more than the first game. Still has that weird filter over everything all the time which I don't like, but everything looks more complex and interesting, from Blackwatch to the infected monsters. The red bioluminescence was a great addition, in my opinion. 3.) The additional new infected enemies. Should have made them encounterable in free-roam, though. Including juggernauts and goliaths. Shame. 4.) This may be controversial, but I did like James Heller's character, and his lines made me laugh. I though he made a good foil to the much more serious and deadpan Alex Mercer, but I would NOT consider it a worthy trade to having Alex be the villain. I like him best as an anti-hero, and not a villain whose origin was "Humanity sucks and my girlfriend tried to kill me, i'm evil now." (Yes that is the basic gist of why he turned evil)

The only things I liked about the second one was how you could combine 2 different weapons like send them flying with one weapon then lunge at them with the claws in midair to continue the combo, also the bio bomb was cool and I liked that you had space to go crazy on zombies when you were bored without having to deal with the military, like in 1 you had a strike team on your ass every 2 seconds, they had a lot of patrols. I know fighting the military is also fun but sometimes you just want to kill some zombies. But anyway, the first one was more fun overall, movement and stuff were more fun. I’m not saying the second one was bad, it was great and all but the first was a more crazy and cool.

Dude, you can beat the game with no upgrade. The game is so afraid of challenging you and so mind-numbing easy, that all the enemies are practically killing themselves for you. The highest difficulty add nothing, you actually have to try to die in this game.

You can, but then you won't get to enjoy the sight of some poor fool trying to shoot you point blank only for the entire magazine to ricochet back into. Truly, this upgrade makes you a font of karmic retribution as those who would take aim at you fire at themselves instead. Also, I preferred the way this game did the powers. As much as I enjoyed Hulk Ultimate Destruction combos in Prototype 1, having 90% of them become essentially worthless early in the game definitely hurt my enjoyment. I am fine with having less overall button combos if most of them can retain their usefulness throughout the game. Besides, as any DMC player knows, having only one attack button is fine if you can quick switch to at least one other weapon or ability, and I would argue that having the two attack buttons assigned to two separate weapons fulfills this need. Still, I wish Radical had a chance to perfect it with a 3rd game, but that is a dream long lost.

This was the first game that, by the end of it, I was playing it just to beat it. The game play wasn't bad, tho it was dumbed down, and the graphics a step up but God, I hated the characters, the story, the dialog... all of it. By the end It was just a massive sunk cost fallacy and a morbid curiosity of how bad it will get that got me through it. I now have to go look up the final cut scene, because I have this distinct memory of one of the charecters saying somthing along the lines of "what do we do now" and I remember yelling back at the screen the name of the villain they foreshadowed through out prototype 1, "Pariah", because it was clear that they were setting him up to be the next main antagonist and he was completely forgotten about in 2 But memories tend to be a little wierd some times, and I haven't played this game in a very long time lol.

The wacky way they turned Mercer into the bad guy will forever just boggle my mind. The guy got nuked and turned into goop. You'd have the perfect excuse to say he lost all his memory and since his body is a virus. He just tries to spread it. Could still keep Heller involved as a protagonist or just continue as Mercer in which the tables have turned and you're now fighting blackwatch to try to spread the virus as a twisted villain. The gameplay is a fun time but oh do I wish the story was better.

Coincidentally, I just finished my first playthrough of this game about an hour before this video dropped, collected everything, did all side content, and yeah, idk it was definitely a good game but like damn it kinda got repetitive. But I enjoyed myself for the most part.
