Well no, "living within your means" doesn't have the same ring to it, they named it something that is easy to track. They didn't rename the actual living, they just gave it a name that can easily be tagged because the point was to create the trend of ordinary people showing their ordinary lives.

Guess I’m right on trend, because I’m still wearing clothes I’ve had for 10 years! No reason to replace it if it’s still good. Same goes for things like appliances. I’ve had the same hair straightener for 17 years, still works. My sewing machine is a 1983 Kenmore and it’s still going strong. Buy quality items that last years to get your money’s worth! Appliances should last decades! Businesses don’t build quality items like they used to.

I had to learn to substitute. I bought a cheaper shampoo on Thursday in place of an anti-dandruff one because I remembered I had a hair conditioner taking care of it at home (initially I planned to buy both shampoos🤦🏾‍♀️). I also had to stop myself from buying some "cheap" skincare products from my cousin, I recently bought some new ones. I wanted to buy them now that she's selling them cheap to give potential customers a chance to try them out for cheap, but I'd already spent much and I know that it'll end in waste. She's my cousin, it'd be better for her if I buy it later, when she's actually going to make a profit and buy then I'd probably need them

I want to draw attention back to the person who judged the food in the fridge. Food insecurity is very real and I don't think people are genuinely listening to how they sound by judging FOOD that is rightfully in a fridge. I would have been very pained if someone said that to me because of how my family life was. Let's buy less, yes, but definitely not discourage security based of ideals.

I have been a minimalist. Back to overconsumption. Back to minimalist. Now back to overconsumption. It’s a mental disorder given to us by our American culture. What a wonderful gift given to us by our social media culture. Declutter, donate and gift to family and friends. In the 80s I was told that I would own things in my life at least three times in my life. The reality in the 2024 you will own it at least 20 times in your life.

Can you explain this thought process to me? "Oh, this is just how I live" you said bitterly.... about a trend that's LITERALLY meant for normal people to show their normal lives. Like you can literally participate if you want, it's literally FOR YOU, you don't have to do anything. There's no glamorization unless you're actively seeking out influencers who are trying to jump on trend, most of the videos are literally of normal people showing their squeezed out creams and decades old key hangers and shoes that are scruffed but perfectly usable.

Well, I’m glad people are finally realizing it’s important to treasure the belongings we have, and to purchase mindfully. That being said it’s funny that influencers are calling it a “trend”, bc it just makes them sound even more out of touch to me. I have a blanket that is literally older than I am. It’s from when my *mom* went to college. I have clothes from 5+ years ago, I’ve been wearing the same pair of shoes since 2018 (though they’re finally starting to fall apart, so I’m gonna try to find a new pair that will hopefully last me another 6 years). And I’m not *poor* my family is middle class, I just feel like if it ain’t broke, if I’m satisfied with it now, why fix it? Why get more?

I have a black pleated skirt my tennis coach gave me when I was in highschool. I'm 33 by the way. My coach had that skirt when she was in highschool in the 70's. I can still wear it. The pleats are still perfect, the threads are all intact, and the color has not faded. I'll definitely hold on to good quality clothing, especially a good pleated skirt, that's a staple in my wardrobe in general. On another note that speaks to the decrease in quality that clothes are made with today. Stuff just doesn't last like it used to so we're forced to constantly buy new clothes. At least things like t-shirts and tennis shoes that we typically wear everyday.

My guy, the "trend" is literally for you. It is not a "trend" to SUDDENLY live like that, although ofc if it results in that for some people, great, the thing that is trending is SHOWING it. It is literally for people like us to see and share our NORMAL lives because we're sick of influencers showing 34080 creams into my face and saying "you need it all" or even worse, saying, for each and every one of them, "this is the only cream you'll ever need!".

It seems like every little thing is something core now. And I keep thinking it's because many people barely go outside and everything they interact with is online. They don't interact with any real subcultures in their daily life so they keep making up really basic empty things and trying to turn them into an aesthetic or a core. From hard-core punk to I've had this nail polish for 17 years-core. Wow.

I literally started over about 2 years ago & I have already filled my small home with "things". As I take inventory, some things are necessities, some are things are hobbies, some things are wishful thinking (exercise stuff 😒 I'm trying. I'm really trying.), and some stuff is excess (food). I realize I over compensate on always having my fridge & pantry full. Sometimes, I dont finish something just to have a little left over in case I need it for something. Inevitably, it goes bad & I I have to toss it. I know it doesn't make sense, but this episode really got me to thinking.

Yup, this was my first thought when I heard about under consumption core. Flexing about only buying what you need, and only the bare minimum. Like🤨. That’s a majority of people, it’s just not glamorized. It’s reality. And I’m not happy being poor is being a trend. From theifting, to buying dirty clothes, and buying what you need and not in excess. Because we’ll be going back to over consumption and I bought a limited edition thing because that’s all I need. It’s gonna go back to overconsumption because we as people like to flex and spend. (If you have the money)

I was loving this trend in the beginning but it very quickly became almost a contest, comparing who’s the most minimalist or frugal instead of actually consuming in a reasonable amount. Also some of the most popular topics didn’t even make sense in my opinion, like having an empty fridge (where are the items that take time to consume like sauces and etc? I get not buying so food that it will expire before eating but that’s not the same thing as not having food at all) or having bare nails, when you can own some basic, regular nail polish and learn to apply it yourself (which actually can be very fun!). Seems like these creators were trying to add as many items as they could to their list as if it’d be counting points or something.

No, minimalism is about owning very little, so to participate, you really DO need to throw out most of your stuff. (which was and is stupid and most people had to buy them again because minimalism is not for them, it is for barely anyone) Underconsumption core is just there for you to show your daily life without needing to use any filters or glamor and unless you've previously bought into overconsuming, you don't need to do anything to "participate" because chances are you already live like that, and of course you don't need to throw out anything, that's missing the point.

When I got out of secondary school(a boarding school) and finally got my 1st phone, I would go to social media to check for what to do to clear my horrible acne. One particular content creator stuck out to me because I saw she once had the kind of acne I had and her story was heartbreaking and kind of similar to mine, so I would write down all the products she used on her skin and check if I could find it in my country, so I could beg my parents to get it for me😂. The list of the products I got from her videos filled two pages 😂 and I was dumb because I never knew what product promotion was. It’s been a year and half now and anytime I go to search for what I need to solve a problem I have, I see multiple things and I have to remind myself that I don’t actually need all that to solve any issue I have. And I have to thank God for giving me parents that always reminded me that I don’t need everything another person is using for my skin even when I was quite adamant😅

As ive gotten older i definitely prefer to spend a little extra on higher quality clothing(higher quality than forever 21 where i used to love shopping lol). Not name brand specifically just something decent quality that will last me atleast two or three years. Clothing isn't made with the same quality it used to be made with and i like to update my wardrobe every few years. I do try to stay in the habit of throwing out old clothes as i buy new clothes. This way i am not hoarding. There are definitely things i can still improve on in regards to spending but im doing way better than i was in my 20's. I also get a new phone every two to three years but i dont buy the latest most expensive one. The phone i just bought is the most expensive phone ive bought in probably almost ten years. It was about 300 or 400$. The cheaper phones i usually buy stop working/start lagging really quickly(about a year in) so i "splurged" and got something a little more expensive with a lot more storage and it does everything i need.

I get so annoyed with people who promote underconsumption and frugality but scoff at purchasing cheaper shoes. Like sis they are made In the same factory with the same materials by the same workers as the name brand shoes!!! Nowadays there is barely a difference in durability between a $10 Walmart sneaker or a $75 sneaker. My cloud slippers for $5 are made of the EXACT SAME EVA material as your $75 popular brand cloud slippers. My plastic fabric woven flats are the same material and feel the same as the $200 ones. Now I’ve bought $300 leather boots in the past that were just not even half as comfortable or insulating as some $35 faux leather boots I got from Burlington. Sometimes synthetic materials just perform better than natural and that’s the truth.

I have nothing against cheap sneakers or shoes. I have had a couple pairs of walmart sneakers over the years and most of my cute boot type shoes for fall have been inexpensive. I have found it does matter when looking for running shoes( trail running 25k + length) the durability, grip and stability of the ones at the store don't compare to the features of designed trail runners. Doesn't mean you have to spend 150+ on them but sometimes there is rational behind the more expensive specialty item

is underconsumption equivalent to living frugally? Can gen Z just use the existing vocabulary? What's wrong with frugal, living within your means?

I got this from someone (I don’t remember who), but I have to see something and like it three times before I buy it. I don’t have a perfect record with this, but it’s a good thing to keep in mind.

About keeping cosmetics like nail polish and makeup for years, that isn't really underconsumption. When it comes to things that you use and empty, It's about buying what you know you'll use regularly and get your money's worth out of, not buying something you use once in a blue moon and keeping it for 10 years. Cosmetics expire people! it's all a breeding ground for bacteria especially when you dip your fingers in or use an applicator that goes back into the product package so be aware of that. Having no groceries is also NOT underconsumption lol. People are really losing the plot here and it shows. Not to mention it' a trend now, which means it's fleeting which is quite sad. The best way to underconsume is to get off of tiktok and social media and live a normal life!

No... the trend is literally for people who already live like this. It's for YOU, if you want. Just turn on camera and show your life. That's the point...

Can I ask that if you use long clips from creators that you either say who they are afterwards, or put an overlay on their clip with their social media name. Because using their clips with no acknowledgement is not fair on them and the work they did to create their videos.

I honestly do not get the hate for the trend. "OH, UNDERCONSUMTIONCORE?! YOU MEAN MY EVERY DAY LIFE?!" yeah that's the point. These people aren't influencers that are switching up (although I'm sure there are some) these are normal people sharing their everyday life. Jesus. It's always "OH THESE TRENDS ARE SO UNRELATABLE" and then when there's a trend specifically tailored to showcase the most relatable thing ever, it's a problem too. "It's not a core it's my life!" no, your life is your life, and "core" is the way we label it on internet because that's how tiktok functions. "core" is just a code word for trend on tiktok and showing normal stuff IS a trend on tiktok now. And that lady saying "Oh you're gonna throw all your stuff to replace it with one good thing" is completely off whack. Underconsumption doesn't mean having few things, it means not buying shit you don't need just because it is trendy. Like... she literally described how to FAIL at underconsumption.

Honestly... and the trend isn't there to start something new, it's literally for normal people who HAVE been living normally to show it because if influencers can shove their ten thousand blushes up our rectum, we can show our old keychains and inherited cutlery.

You should look at George Carlin’s stuff video. And how our stuff is stuff but everyone else’s stuff is chit. For example, in my 3 car garage I’m constantly reminding my husband to keep his chit away from my stuff. I’m guilty of buying a larger house with a larger lawn to justify a behemoth lawn mower I purchased for Covid. A pro organizer cleared 1500 sq ft so now I need more stuff. Ba dummmt dummmt dummt 🥁 Yeah, I know and no, I can’t make the Covid mower make sense now. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I love how people preach at folks, then slip in a hasty, "Oh, I'm not judging, I just learned this and want you to know!" If that was the case, they'd start out saying, "Hey, I have (insert problem here), and I want to tell you what I learned." Otherwise, no, you're preaching and judging, hon.
