The reason why you feel the heat more on the VFR compared to the 600RR isn't because of the exhaust routing - it's the engine type. The CBR is an inline 4, so the engine heat is forward of you. The VFR is a V-4, so you have the rear bank of cylinders right there under the tank and between your thighs. It's the same reason Ducati's are constantly called uncomfortable because of the heat, be it the twin or V-4, that rear bank will keep the rider "warm" and limber.

You should have addressed the original reason for undertails in the first place. They first showed up on 2 stroke race bike where the engine needed long and complex exhausts for maximum power. Then it just became a game of street bikes looking like their racing cousins. Now we don’t race with 2 strokes so short pipes are back in. If anyone ever figures out clean 2 strokes long pipes will be back.

Buell Pioneered the underslung exhausts almost 20 years ago. I watched a video explained why he did that. He had a muffler, hugged it against his body & turned around. He then held it out arms stretched & it was harder & slower to do it. It’s amazing it’s taken 20 years for the rest of the industry to catch on.

The under tail exhaust one of the sportiest looking features ever put on a street bike. Any issues with heat under the seat can be eliminated with some cheap heat shield or a few exhaust lowering links. On the other hand a good aftermarket slip on is pricey and when I fork out the cash for one it would be nice to see it.

Timothy Buchanan Nice bikes, my buddy has one, but being a 600 and single exhaust can I think they are not even close to as bad as my R1 was. Although a full exhaust with cat removed instead of just slip ons on R1 might have helped.

Lassi Kinnunen. If the exhaust was done something like what you said it would probably look pretty good. Something like on the ninja h2. I think the point of the under tail is the looks not performance. Its longer heavier and more expensive. The under tail is all about looks. With all of its disadvantages performance wise it still has one great advantage most forget about. When you low side or drop your bike like almost everyone does at some point. Your $700+ muffler doesn't get destroyed. Personally I like the way the 2015 ninja h2 exhaust design the best but it only looks better if you run a full titanium. $5000+. So in short can't beat the looks of the under tail.

One important thing missed - Heat from the undertail exhaust pipe passes next to the rear shock, slightly changing it's dynamics as the shock heats up. Ultimately the technology didn't exist to pack 9000 cats underneath the bike until recently, but it's safe to assume the advantages drove the innovation.

You overlooked the biggest reason for the new underslung exhausts. EU Emissions standards. New bikes have stricter emissions requirements, and as a result, most of the manufacturers have started putting catalytic converters on their motorcycles. These are heavy lumps of precious metals, so getting them as low as possible to negate their effect is absolutely necessary. As a result, the small "stinger" side pipes are coming back. Less materials and easier installation at the factory, all means cheaper build costs. And that is a must to offset the added cost of the catalytic converter.

Weird vid. Almost the first statement "Moto GP bikes use undertail" contradicts the whole premise of the sweeping statement that undertail pipes are going away. How about sports bikes that are built in the full knowledge that will spend their life on the track and the stock can will be in the bin within 15 minutes of the bike coming out of the dealership (ahem... GSXR 1000). No underseat space needed, and with a carbon fibre pipe it will be light as anything. The "gasses travelling further" premise I also question, although I don't know the physics of it, but I know what my old GSXR 750 was like with a full length RS3 and cut down RS3 - the shorty robbed 6bhp off the top. I think "forever" is a strong word...

Some Motogp bikes have dual exhausts that have an undertail and a side mount. I believe the reason for this is on v twin bikes having one of the exhaust go out the tail is easier and more compact then going out the side. Although that’s just a theory. I’m not sure why they do it.

I've never ever felt the heat from my undertail, and I run a aftermarket exhaust the weight is a fraction of OEM. I will agree that the exhaust does travel further creating slightly more back pressure, but it's non noticeable to the every day sport enthusiast. In a gasoline engine the less back pressure the easier the engine can put out the HP it's designed for. With two strokes it's the opposite. In all reality it's only for aesthetics from the days of the 80's when racing bikes were mainly two strokes and needed the extra back pressure. Companies that still manufacture undertail exhaust systems are behind the times and are not being user friendly to the rider that likes to work on his or her own bike

This is your opinion. Motorcross and trail bikes have had the exaust under the seat for,,,,,,EVER! They will never move them and as for road and race bikes it is just evolution some will some won't. The first road bike that had the mufflers under the seat is the Honda NR750, the bike the Ducati 916 was heavily copied from and of course the MV F4. I doubt they will change that any time soon. As far as making a handling problem at least 14 bikes with the pipes under the seat have won the World Superbike Championship, Including Ducati and Honda! Also trunks are for Elephants!

Undertail exhaust has a nice aesthetic, but it’s functional as well. Superbike rules do not allow the exhaust pipes to protrude beyond the rear wheel. If engineers need to lengthen the exhaust they can route it undertail. In a racing system, lengthening the exhaust generally moves peak torque down in the rpm range. In the early days of 1000cc superbike, the engines raced at lower engine speeds. Over time, bore measurements have risen, and the engines operate at much higher rpm. Exhausts have shortened and no longer run undertail. You can witness this design phenomenon by comparing a Ducati V4R is WSBK spec to the EWC version. The endurance racing bike operates at lower rpm, and Ducati use a split undertail design. In WSBK. The front cylinders use the traditional side exit.

A couple of issues I have with the video: 1. Ducati 916 and MV Agusta F3 and F4 are also Supersports. 2. High weight distribution actually makes it easier to corner and allows for higher corner speeds. 3. I have never experienced heat issues from any underseat exhaust when standing still. I don't believe they will go extinct... no actually I am sure, because Motocross will never use any other system. And then there are bikes like the Speed Triple wgo still sport them.

They wasn't originally intended as a styling exercise,on the V4 two stroke 500's from the '80's and '90's Grand Prix bikes, the critical dimensions of the exhaust system made the routing through the rear of the tail unit was a necessity as it was the only available room, obviously the silencers were minimal and feather light so there wasn't much weight being transferred rearwards.

When I bought my F4i, the seller was like, I have an under tail kit for this if you want to buy it? I was like, uh, no. Thanks. It already had an exhaust. I’m not buying a new exhaust for a 15 year old bike that already has one. Not to mention all the work.

It makes sense. One benefits from experience with the qualities of both to appreciate how it affects the handling. On my first outing in the Bershire Intl. trials on an OSSA enduro back in '70, I attached a really spiffy looking round metal tool container from an old Honda 160 just aft of the seat on the fiberglass tail. I hadn't noticed it affecting the handling until I actually was underway on the first day - and it wasn't good. It affected the feel of the machine much greater than I would have suspected and the next year did away with it to carry tools somewhere else, including in my pockets. The difference was remarkable.

Racing bikes began using under-seat exhausts in the 1970s for a number of reasons: to cut drag, improve balance, place the outlet in the bike’s vortex for more efficient gas exit, increase lean angles and make the exhaust long without curling the pipes. Also, there are more electronics now, like traction control and ABS, those computers need to go somewhere and they usually end up under the seat. Why they went away....strict emissions.... bigger cans can't fit under the seat anymore so they have to push them under the engine.

Ok, so your a Honda rider so I'll explain some for you. 1. The engine makes the heat not the exhaust, so the exhaust can't be the hottest part of the bike. Don't go and grab it though. 2. More length in the exhaust doesn't mean less power. 3. Trunk space will never matter on a motorcycle. That is why internal visors are becoming so popular. 4. The heat under your seat is coming from the engine. If the heat is that bad on your wiffer and coming from the exhaust, get split seats. 5. Under tail is not more complex to remove. Its exhaust clamp or exhaust clamp. Single systems are more complex to remove. Motorcycles that look good sell better. Under tail exhaust is old so it is phasing out. Pretty soon we will all get sick of looking at "normal" exhaust and it will all go under tail again. Look at motorcycles through the years they all come and go. Under tail is not a new idea either, i think its like +60 years old now, they figured out all there is to know about under tail vs "normal" exhaust long ago. Why do you think they put these ginormous ugly ass exhaust cans that way a ton on all bikes now? Performance, Asthetics, Balance or because they can't sell the bike without it. Your a Honda rider so, its because they can't sell the bike without it.

regular cars have their exhausts dangling down underneath sticking out one side of the bumper ruining the symmetry and aerodynamics where as super cars always have it in the centre and higher up, this is what undertails always remind me of

I do know the good thing about under tail exhaust is, they don't get destroyed when you low side. I have close to 55,000 miles on my 05 600rr, never had a heat issue even on those 95 degree days sitting in traffic... hell my head sweats more than my Arse as far as to much heat for the rear suspension, that's crap unless the system is poorly designed.

The reason why they still use undertail exhausts in racing, is because of the aerodynamic benefits. It moves the C.o.P. ( Center of Pressure) further back making the bike more stable at high speeds and creating higher air pressure behind the motorcycle in order to reduce the drag force. In my humble opinion there will always be a place for undertail exhausts in racing despite the drawbacks.

If you do your own maintenance, under seat exhausts make life much easier, especially if you have a single sided swingarm. No more burnt forearms or having to remove an exhaust to get at the working parts. Much easier to keep the bike clean too. You only looked at one side of the weight balance argument (literally)! High pipes allow the mass to be centralised not dumped on one side. Own a 2019 Speed Triple and your mind will change

Lets not forget catalyst placement/heat issues. All bikes these days have cats and they need to be close to the engine to light off quickly and stay hot under all conditions. For simplicity and weight savings (not to mention mass centralization) its just smart to incorporate the collector, cat, muffler and O2 sensor into a tidy package and stuff it all under the engine, at the lowest point on the bike.

I'd prefer undertail exhausts over side exhausts for aesthetic reasons and not wanting to burn my leg. It's a performance compromise for aesthetics and I justify it by saying that we generally want to date supermodels and not athletes.

Since I saw the argument elsewhere I thought I'd try and dispel it a bit here; undertails are not necessarily better for emissions in a standard configuration. They leave as much room under the bike for a catalytic converter as a side-mount exhaust an and the extra pipe length will not have a really noticeable effect. Not that ppl with bikes that have undertail exhausts usually actually care, but some will use any excuse to justify or elevate it On a semi-related noteUnderside-exit exhausts can potentially be less emissions-friendly but that's more a matter of packaging, a clever manufacturer will shift the cat slightly forwards and the muffler slightly rearwards (or side to side, though with an aftermarket can that can affect lateral balance), and add sound deadening to the cat itself. Plus its shorter and IMO is actually much cleaner, even if it precludes a centerstand (grumble)
