Since I was born in 1951 I have seen the history of both manual and automatic transmissions. Things have changed a lot over years. When I was a child the typical manual was a three speed column shift or a 4 speed floor shift on compact cars like the Volkswagen Beetle. At that time most of the automatics were 3 speed automatics or the 2 speed power glide transmission on Chevrolet cars. At the present day most manual transmission are 6 speed floor shift manuals, with some 7 speed Porsches. Also today there are 6 speed, 8 speed and even 10 speed automatic transmissions. I have also seen the decline in sales of cars with manual transmissions as automatic transmissions improved over the years. Because of my age I drove manual transmission vehicles when I was young. However for many years I have just been driving automatics. This works out well for me, since I live in a big city with a lot of stop and go traffic.

Wow bro that’s awesome. Here’s a prespective from a guy that lives in a 3rd world country, we here learn on manuals and most of us have manual cars and even if we did want an automatic at the end of the day the gas price is so high that we are better off with a manual car 😂

Being able to "feel" the engine do its thing is simply priceless to me. I also find it safer to drive a MT over an AT. When I was learning to drive my family used to always tell me "why dont you try for a manual license rather than an auto one?" I wanted to learn the road rules first and always had clutch fear thinking that driving a manual was really complex. A few years go by and the auto EG Civic I learned to drive in was getting slippery in its transmission, by this time my manual bar on my little piece of plastic was gone so I though I'd go buy a cheap manual and teach myself to stick shift. Got a 2005 Holden Cruze (YG) for $1200, learned how to drive a manual and did my very first public road test in peak traffic (only stalling once due to lack of RPM on a hill start) and never owned an auto car since. I've got the manual bug, haha! As for the Cruze, it was the AWD model and I took it off-roading where I rolled it into a tree stump and crushed the roof in at the A-pillar making it unroadworthy so I sold it to a wrecking yard for $300 after removing all my audio gear.

The only time I find high quality AT fun or useful is when I'm doing a track day. Even then, it depends on the track and the car you're driving. For normal back road fun, 3 pedals all the way. I do agree, being stuck in traffic for over an hour with MT feels bad but I work closer to home since Covid so that isn't an issue for me. I was looking at the new Corvette but I guess they just made it easier for me to look for a C7 MT when the car market isn't ridiculous like it is now. On the bright side, I'll be selling one of my three 6spd and upgrade to a 7spd. Hehe.

I have never owned a car… looking for a car… I want a Manual because it seems much more engaging to drive with than just pressing a pedal and going. I use my works vehicles from time to time, and I’m going to be completely honest, every time I go somewhere it’s kind of boring. I think that’s what’s put me off for the longest on getting a vehicle was that it was just a convenience to get somewhere faster but I didn’t truly enjoy it. Plus I’d be paying for insurance and the vehicle itself. Manual just sounds like more fun, and the modding community is really selling that point. I want something fun, so manual might be for me 🤔

I do wonder why Europe clings to the Manual while Asia and America have mostly moved entirely to Automatics. I personally would drive a Manual if it were more efficient because I don't drive much. But because it isn't, I drive a DCT automatic which gets 3mpg more fuel economy than the manual version of my car. In the cooking world there is a similar arguement between gas and Induction cooking. No matter how much more powerful, efficient, and faster Induction is, Many people still stick with gas because it is what they learned and feel it is more engaging to cook on a flame than to have a pan heated from within. In this case, I definitely cook with induction.

I had an 88 d21 Automatic, it had a button on the floor so whenever I put the petal to the metal it downshifted to the Lowest possible gear. so I could use all 75 horsepowers😭😭😭

Quick summary, most people dont wanna learn how to use manual anymore. They're pretty hard and takes time to perfect.

I got a manual VW a year ago because I know they are endangered. However, I’m no longer a young man, but pretty tall and occasionally the clutch does a number on my arthritic knee. On those days, I’m like ‘Fuck this ancient shit’ and wish I just got a DSG.
