1:35 I know that this isn't what the video is about, but the fact that the amount of attempted suicides is at 10 % even if you remove trans/non-binary kids from the equation is messed up. To me it suggests that there's a bigger issue, elimination of which would send both of those numbers down.

A lot of school issues are talked about but the one thing people of all political views can agree on is schools are failing. Schools are failing to protect kids from bullying and failing to inspirre them and give them purpose, as a highschool student, whose been bullied I know how hard those situations can be on a student, when you combine that with constant streams of negative news and current events, things can seem hopeless, especially when schools are overpacked and underfunded. This means the few teachers who are genuinely still passionate and trying their best to help kids learn and grow are overworked and are bound to the curriculum which isn't inspiring and teaching kids or helping them push their boundaries. Really there is an issue with the entire school system which needs a complete systematic overhaul. This will likely never happen because politicians and political activists (now everyone and their mom) are too busy, pointing fingers and arguing about which bathrooms 2% of students use for them to take a second to address and try to solve any of the huge issues that face every child in the nation enrolled in public school. I mean this is the big problem every one is talking about when it only accounts for 0.004% of total attempted suicides. The sad thing is that politicians on both sides use arguments like these to shift blame and claim moral high ground, just to avoid the responsability to take action, and work together to actually solve problems, and it works. (I'm not saying these issues don't matter but they shouldn't be the priority especally because they're just specific examples of a greater issue not being seen by adults)

How is it legal for the state government to restrict funding based on a school district’s decision to assign bathrooms? Funding should ONLY be allocated based on the population of a school and/or the students needs.
@emmae11685

Because republican state governments have become more and more power hungry in recent years and have been trampling over local governments. Why don’t they take into account what the children actually going to these schools think? The only ones complaining about these issues are the ones who aren’t going through it! Newsflash, American kids and teens are becoming more accepting and caring than all previous generations! Kids aren’t coming home from school and complaining about a boy with nail polish, it’s the adults doing it and painting cruel pictures of them to their children! Students don't take surveys seriously, like at all. American high school students are already bombarded with plenty of stressful assignments and deadlines to meet. I graduated a few months ago and even the most thoughtful and wise students clearly rushed the survey, answering randomly, because it just didn't pertain to them and they had assignments they had to get done. Students are educated, however a lot of them really just don't care because it doesn't affect them. Also, kids don't come home and complain to their parents anymore, they come home and complain to their friends at school on social media, which tends to perpetuate more of a hostile environment even out of school.
@HiAdrian
@HiAdrian 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. If the school kids themselves don't care, then their (adult) environment shouldn't make such a ruckus, especially if it eats community resources that could be used for other things.

@@HiAdrian I should rephrase that, I'm not sure it's that they all don't care, (don't get me wrong, there are definitely some students who truly do not care) I think a lot of them understand what the ruckus is, however it is not nearly as high on their priority list compared to other things they might be dealing with at home, school, or even work. The best thing we could do is ask what students of schools want, not what some random board that none of us will ever hear about thinks. I’m sick of my education being directed by some far off entity with little to no direct interaction with us as a whole. I’m fed up with the schools acting like they own the students and not listening to their ideas, beliefs, aspirations, and dreams. The only power we get is student council, or should I call it “student party planner”. We have no choice of what we get to do, no ability to direct our future, and no influence in our own politics. So here’s what I’ve to say: “NO EDUCATION WITHOUT REFORMATION”.

@@zumabbar It basically means that kids from rich families get to go to well funded schools, and kids from poor neighborhoods go to neglected schools. It's a terrible cycle. Public education needs to be the great equalizer, but in the US it only perpetuates class disparity. And like many things in American society, affluent homeowners have an incredibly outsized influence over how things are done and to make sure they don't change (lest property value is lost). When one of the two available parties refuses to adhere to the gentleman's agreements that the government has been built upon, then democracy no longer functions. A party that is anti democratic, tried to take power through a coup d'état and is willingly and knowingly breaking the law should not be allowed to exist. This video did not really talk about how such laws are allowed to pass. It was a surface level analysis of the symptom, not the cause. @@lumikera what’s the point of arguing. They are trans not biologically natural in what they identify. Regardless of plastic and artificial anything this is true. A neutral bathroom and neutral dress area is appropriate. If they aren’t comfortable with their biological nature and spaces for such then a neutral space makes logical sense. They might not identify as a man or women but they can’t be anything they wish. This is reality. Trans have only recently asked for special privileges and been a hyper focus, sadly it’s mostly political and for health coverage of many plastic elective surgeries. Also lifelong medicines that produce artificial changes and have many health risks/adverse side effects. Meanwhile those with life threatening diseases don’t even have that available and people are homeless and food/nutritionally deprived. There are many ways to solve this, like fund raising and private money being available. Minors definitely shouldn’t be enabled by state guardianship or anything that over steps hard boundaries. The government has a set role and is failing to even meet that yet they divert attention of this by exploiting groups and other matters that are not within their realm or even Constitutional.

It is for the same reason that weed is legal in California and Oregon, and CBD oil is legal in Indiana. Despite the fact that it's illegal federally (even federal employees with permanent residence in those states cannot legally consume THC/CBD, due to the federal Controlled Substances Act (CSA)), it is legal for the ordinary citizen to do so. This is because the federal government grants states rights in most cases, and does not interfere because they don't want to get into any unnecessary disputes with the state governments. Nothing. Trans women just want to use the bathroom. Schools can just follow state laws and refuse the federal funding. It's not hard. Or they can follow federal laws, refuse state funding, and get the majority of their funding from local governments, if the local governments agree with the feds. And the federal government does not have the power to enforce civil rights laws with regards to intrastate activity. Including schools.

I'm a trans kid. In middle school, I was relentlessly bullied for being trans and teachers did nothing and actually victim blamed me because of my trans identity. When I got to highschool, they made a plan to prevent further bullying and things have slowly improved. Now throw in limited ressources, limited time, varying tastes and restrictions, etc and how do you even decide on what food you should serve to school kids? Vox could feature the many forms of *gatekeeping* Americans live under every day. That might stretch to a series - about our *caste system* and how the structure's methods and traditions serve to maintain this power structure and minimize, limit, and exclude many groups like the LGBTQA community. For example, Vox could explore how education availability, quality, and *safety* variances at all levels, and how even entry level job listings began demanding both college degrees and previous experience, all function as forms of gatekeeping. Resulting costs (of all kinds) to our overall well-being as a nation should be included in addition to the fiscal totals.
