The economic policy during Mao was an experimental stage in their long-term development search for an economic model that suits China. The "Two steps forward and One step backward" was ultra-conservative. It wasn't successful but gradually Deng visionary economic reforms were able to set China on the right balance and track. Today, China has a unique stable economic system that flourishes for their society.
@ALIEN_8578 ай бұрын
@cheng-tsohsieh9990 You'll never understand China by comparing it to Taiwan. China's population was way bigger than Taiwan even then. A wide chasm of class divide is a cause of internal instability that led to the fall of the past dynasties and a weak China that was subjected to foreign occupation. China will stick to communism and socialist egalitarianism instead of the failed capitalistic system that led to the humiliation of China for over a century before Mao came to power. Today China is a stable society way ahead of Taiwan. The visionary China has made this possible to where they stand proud today, not only vis-a-vis Taiwan but also in the world, whereas Taiwan remains insignificant in global status, trade wise or politically.
@pbworld78588 ай бұрын
@cheng-tsohsieh9990 You seem to think it's easy to develop a country with a population of more than 1 billion. Yes, there were tragic outcomes, and people did suffer tremendously, but the current system is working. They work for the Chinese and they are satisfied with the progress made by their government. It suits them and they have NO intention of forcing their system on anyone else - that is a myth perpetuated by USA. Every country has there own way of doing things but USA will not be satisfied until every country is brought to their knees and are subservient to USA. Finally, we are NO longer in the 80s. A lot has changed since then.

@cheng-tsohsieh9990 When Chiang Kai-shek withdrew from the mainland, he took all the gold reserves of mainland banks to develop Taiwan Province. If Taiwan did not develop better than mainland, I would really feel sorry for the mainlanders who were left with nothing, but proverty and lands. It is unknown how much gold was taken away, but the comparison between the empty Forbidden City and the National Palace Museum in Taiwan is very stark. At that time, Chiang Kai-shek transported 36 ships of cultural relics to Taiwan. Would he give up all the gold when he flees ?

The west could have "flicked a switch" and disabled many critical systems in China using western software and hardware. Cisco, Nokia, Netgear, Intel, Swift, etc., could shut down China at will. It's actually funny, EU27 exports more digital services than US does, about $150 billion more annually. The difference is that the digital services US sells are very consumer oriented and visible, where as the ones Europe sells are often are not consumer related or visible. Also, all the features he mentioned for wechat, are available in western countries, there simply isn't such monopoly for it like in China. And finally, there are many services that offer charge free payments for consumers, but someone always pays the transaction. Usually "free for consumer" is actually fee that is paid by the merchant and the fee is added to the cost of product or service you are buying. So you might send money to your friend for free, but when you buy stuff from store using the same software, all the transaction fees are in the prices of products, including the "free" transfer to your buddy. I'm pretty sure Varoufakis knows these things, but you get more headlines with comments like he is making.

I don't agree with Prof. Yanis in one point and it regards the importance of Russia in current world affairs. If Russia were "insignificant", his words, why was the US so concerned about an economic rapprochement between Russia and the EU? A Russia EU partnership would certainly be a major competitor to China and an unacceptable competitor/rival/ enemy of the USA, as, US agressive counter-measures and threats proved it. The irony is that, when pushing Russia away from the EU, the US inadvertedly (?) made a very closely-knitted partnership between Russia and China, not only possible, but also indispensable. China has people, money, technology, consumer products and Russia has everything else! Main casuality: "stupid Europe" (his words). I add: subservient. And I, sadly, as an European, agree with him...

His criticism of the framers of the Bill of Rights doesnt discredit what they said and what their goals were... The world existed in a different reality back then... Some things were possible and others were not... The goal though should not be attacked

As many truths as he is dropping, still besides the stunning of American power, still if anyone had to make a hard choice between US or China .. still it would be obvious to some.

Anyone who believes meriica today is still the same country back in WWII and neglect the undeniable fact that landscapes of International economy and politics have completely changed and the current so called international order which is in fact dictated and abused by the US led West for decades is actually in the process of falling apart. The Ongoing Wars in Europe and middle east are just the prelude of the upcoming big change and considering the angers and grievances towards US frm the global community in the ongoing war of gaza, i wont be as asservative as u to believe meriicans are still in the same advantageous spot as it was back in WWII.

Ppl who are still obsessed with mericas role in WWII and Cold War completely forget or intentionally refuse to accept the fact that meriiica is no longer the same country as it was back then. Back in the old days, US was the manufacturing hub with largest industrial capacity as well as domestic consumer market in the world. It also had the most comprehensive industrial system and most complete industrial supply chain that dwarfed all his advarsaries. Wat abt now?oh Us today has a highly financialized economy and heavily depends on importing all kinds of essential industrial produts abroad including his biggest adversaries. Like it or not, the solid foundation which laid merriicas victory against it's adversaries during WWII and Cold War is GONE. Just enlighten me which country owns the title of Worlds manufacturing hub NOW? Which industrial power has the largest industrial capacity, most comprehensive industrial system, most complete industrial supply chain and biggest consumer market in the world? Last time I checked, it def isn't the US..
