So true, I was so upset when I had bought this Chromebook at first I even tried taking it back but could not return it. When I started actually using it and learning about it , it's been the best laptop I've ever had. I've learned so much about software and the Laptops Capabilities and even joined communities online.

I have an older Toshiba Chromebook 2, it is a great device that I picked up dirt cheap second hand. It has a full HD display, with 4 gb of ram, but only 16Gb of storage. I just picked up a 128Gb Micro SD card for more storage, and that works great. I used ChromeOS for a bit, but I very quickly dual booted with Linux, and I have been using GalliumOS on it since. I runs great, the battery life is fantastic, and with the new pushes from steam, I can use Proton to play windows games, obviously hardware dependent, and some older Windows games actually run better under proton then they do on Windows 10. And a great thing to mention is that with the Steam Link app, just days after you released this video, Steam added support for game streaming off-network, so now that little under powered Chromebook can stream anywhere, with your network connections being the caveat. Great video, and many great points. Chromebooks are great for a large amount of users, most people just don't know that. And with Linux support, they are even better then they started.

I was like you saying what's the point of a Chromebook? Well I bought an inexpensive Asus Chromebook with 4 gig of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage for $270, plus I added a 64GB SD card. I've had it just a week and I'm blown away by how easy it is to use how fast it is and the enormous amount of capability in terms of chrome OS Android and Linux. This sleek and slim device handles 95% of what I need to do with a laptop. I've had increasing frustrations with Microsoft and Windows 10 that has basically crippled my i5 laptop with 8GB ram and runs slowly because of all the windows garbage and the ridiculous updates that Microsoft forces on us. And don't forget those disastrous updates over the last year. I'm so glad that we have another portable option I love my Chromebook and I highly recommend it to others!

If you're going to be running Linux along with ChromeOS you'll need to get 128GB.. 64 just isn't enough. If you're only using the Chrome OS and Chrome / Android apps and use cloud storage, then I agree with the 64GB.

My celeron chromebook runs fine while running basic ChromeOS and Android stuff which is mostly how I use it. It lags a little running some Linux apps. 4GB is an absolute minimum for RAM on any device running Chrome OS or really any device that will be running the Chrome browser. It is a memory hog and will be noticeably laggy with less. Luckily, most Chromebooks have 4GB these days.

The Ultra Low power Intel Core i CPU series is certainly far better performance than any Celeron or Pentium certainly within the same Gen. See performance measurement test charts. The 'M' nomenclature has been removed and returns to the nomenclature of 4th Generation, similar to all Core i processors using the letter "Y" compared to "U" for most mobile processors and "H" for the higher end capability mobile processors used commonly for gamming and workstation mobile devices. Thus the 8th Gen Coffee Lake Core i3-8100Y is the equivalent level to the previous M3-5Y,-6Y,-7Y. There are also i5-8xxxY, i7-8xxxY versions. Also there are 10th Gen Comet Lake Core i3,5,7 "Y" versions too. Intel should be releasing their 11th Gen mobile processors later this year, likely in 2nd half 2020 which will include all three Y,U,H versions. Chromebook and other ChromeOS devices seem to have lagged in availability, not offered initially as ChromeOS devices with 10th Gen, only appeared more recently within the last few months [generally since Q2 2020, 6-9 months after initial mobile devices were available]. Also some manufacturers have a M.2 slot internally to add SSD of any size. If You need a more capable computer other more capable processors are available from Intel "U" and can use various mini, desktop processors from Intel and AMD. Am wondering which GPU devices are compatible? Also, if You have an existing computer, You can add multiple booting with one Being ChromeOS. See Chromefy, Project Croissant group for details how to accomplish this. [Which installs on a CUB Linux installation, giving full access to Google Play Store, Android Apps, etc., as seen here, plus the Ubuntu Linux environment.] All The Best and Much Success, Health and Well Being. I am using a chromebook as my go to device for personal use for two years already and my wife borrows it for her teaching side job. I do have a gaming desktop PC but I don't even have speakers connected, so it's not used for anything but gaming. On the chromebook I browse the web, check my email, watch movies and youtube, do my e-banking, create documents and spreadsheets (in office 365 or google docs) from time to time, light picture editing etc. It fits all my needs for personal computing. I bought it used for 100$ and it is still fast and usable as on day one. I don't worry about viruses and software updates. It just does exactly what I need and it is reliable, has plenty of ports including full size HDMI so my wife also uses it for presentations and lessons. Now, with Google Stadia coming up it will become a serious gaming platform also. The good thing is that in time it has become more productive and useful as it aged, so that is a new concept in the computing space. It is not all to all people, don't get me wrong, but it offers enough for the majority and you should not dismiss it and just go for an Mac or a Windows based PC. The selling point here is that for a 300-500 $ you will have to compromise on other platforms. If you wish to spend a 1000$ on a laptop go with Windows or Apple. The point is that you don't have to, now that we have devices like this...

I’ve used Chromebooks a lot in school and I grew to hate it do to how limited it is compared to my MacBook and even my iPad. I know that Chrome OS at school is even more limited due to school regulations, but even outside of the school servers, I still found Chrome OS limiting. However, after doing research on Chromebooks, I at least respect it now. I still prefer Windows, MacOS, and iOS, but I can understand why people would go for a Chrome OS computer. The low price of the product completely justifies the very simple nature of Chrome OS which makes it a great option for those on a budget, those who only need it for basic office work, or those who are minimalists. After I watching this video, I now consider Chromebooks a viable option for my computer the next time I go out to buy one. Admittedly, it’ll be a while until then because I just got an iPad recently and I enjoy using it for entertainment and work reasons. But maybe 5 or 6 years from now, which is the time frame for me to get a new computer, it’ll be interesting to see how Google’s Chrome OS will compete against the other operating systems from Microsoft and Apple.

I'd advise getting a chromebook used from reputable sites like amazon, bestbuy, microcenter, etc it literally halves the price. Chromebooks have a reset feature called "power wash" which wiped the device completely (safe to donate, sell, give to another person). I'd advise to get the 4GB ram versions so it runs smoothly. Ideally this is for people who mostly surfs the net, social media, youtube, netflix, and other non-power users. I think it's ideal for children and non-tech people since it doesn't get viruses so they can't fubar it. Compared to the price point of the competitions windows laptops/destops and tablets this is just better imho.

my laptop fried itself a year and a half ago, and was without one for a few months (I was going kind of nuts). My father and stepmother got me a basic chromebook as an early birthday present. Nothing fancy, and not much storage, but it was a lot better than what I had (nothing), and since I love to type and play games on the computer itself and not just a tablet, it was a LOT better than nothing. It definitely took some getting used to, not having access to certain things that I was used to on a Windows laptop, and it being like my android phone with a much bigger screen, but I definitely got used to it. Was able to type and write again, and I was finally able to play the Harry Potter game again (my phone at the time was NOT compatible with it!) . Silly I know, but I definitely got used to it. I had an idiot moment and spilled something and now the screen is blurry... but the laptop itself still works and I got used to the screen. (Just wish the entire thing was foggy instead of most of it. But it still works.) I recently upgraded to another one with a touch screen and just a bit more storage. I don't need anything fancy, and I'm kind of hooked. It's nice to know that all my documents from the other one just automatically transferred and are available with this one , including the important upgraded resume.

It found my phone and my desktop computer and connected right up via blue tooth. as well as my blue tooth head phones. and a few other things I tried. So cool love it and it is very awesome. Mine is not the kind that will ever have google play store on it but I am cool with that.

Also do note for $20 you can get a 128GB micro SD card (or for $40 a 256GB one) and then storage will not be an issue, do note if you plan to put your chromebook in dev mode with headphones, as soon as you see that white screen, rip your headphones off ASAP, as otherwise it will blast 2 beeps at full speaker volume directly into your ears.

Animal Facts - I agreed with you that 32Gb is quite enough. Heck, my 3 yr old Chromebook has only 16Gb and I've not had problems with running out of storage on that device. But then I got a Chromebook that supports the Linux/Crostini environment and I'm finding that more than 32Gb local storage is necessary to get very far with Linux, especially if you want to install multiple development environments, or the large LibreOffice, Java etc.

I've only got a few Terminal apps install on my machine as far as Linux stuff goes. Now, once they get Linux audio support going, I would like to use Audacity instead of an Android audio recorder, so I may start getting low. But, to be honest, the SSD on my Linux production machine is only 100GB, so I probably won't be too pressed for space as long as I keep data stored off the device. I haven't tested SD card integration yet. Definitely an option if space starts to be a concern.

Chromebooks are horrid and dissapointing. My chromebook had a Pentium N2400 and a touch screen. It's like an android tablet slightly below Samsung quality. It is limited like hell and the 32 gigabytes of space really limits your storage. I had to use an SD card and for some odd reason it wouldn't stay in. It's very limited without developer mode and even then that's still quite limited. Installing Linux is a death sentence on a computer due to the limited space and if you sacrafice enough space from anything else installing things on Linux is a pain on the chromebook. With Internet it's somewhat tolerable but without Internet it is horrible unless you enable dev mode. It has flash plug-ins built in which is appreciated. They advertise a long battery but when putting it in actual use (games, netlix, youtube, etc) it's battery drains fast. I've found that apps work about 80% of the time, sometimes Facebook usage on apps for logins don't work and some 3D games don't work. The 1080p resolution looks nice on the tablet-with-a-keyboard but feels almost as if it's limiting the device. The lack of a dedicated gpu makes it a bit confusing of a choice when playing 3D games but the integrated GPU is competent enough for getting 30fps on games like Minecraft and World of Warships. Netflix works fine and so does youtube and Spotify. Altough it works fine in dev mode a laptop from 2008 would still be better. Also I am not kidding, that acer one with the n2400? My Samsung note 4 is faster and I'm replacing that junk. My chromebook failed in 10 months after I buyed it because it stopped charging. When I got a new charger and it still didn't charge I tossed it into a corner and forgot about it. My warranty was voided because I attempted to install Windows on it. A few last things to say are that there are no icons/shortcuts and windows installations are impossible on some chromebooks (like my own.) So, to conclude my statement is that the virus proof nonsense is a lie (I needed malwarebytes because I caught one on dev mode due to my behaviors), and never buy an expensive chromebook. Only buy cheap chromebooks and if you are considering a more expensive one, use that to buy yourself a real laptop. Thank you for listening friends and remember, don't make the mistake of buying one of these as I did. With dissapointment, Ivan A. B.
@Eevnos
@Eevnos 5 жыл бұрын
Ivan Bracamonte Yeah, the older or low specs one can struggle with Android apps and do have the storage for Linux. It sounds like you didn’t get the right machine to fit your needs. The more recent / better spec’d Chromebooks are extremely capable. It’s like any other computer, you need to get one with the hardware that will support what you want to do.

@@Eevnos Thank you for your attention and I would agree. This laptop is good for school goers but grown ones. Teenagers taking this to school would be more upset than I was. But grown people going to college or have a job that would benefit from the large screen and keyboard could make do with a cheap one. I am still a little bitter about the four cores and four gigs on it performing worse than I expected. Lastly this machine is good for something around 150-180. Once again, thank you for your response.

I'm writing this comment on my Acer Chromebook 14. This last year my Chromebook has lost the function of its touchpad 3x (I'm currently on the 3rd loss), forcing me to use an external mouse. The first time it happened it lasted about 2 weeks (I write "about" because when I took my Chromebook to the Geeksquad it was operating again when I opened it up to show them). The 2nd time for almost a month. I checked it every day, and one day, "miraculously," it was back. I think this happens after I get an update to my Chromebook's Chrome OS, and it comes back after another update. How long will it remain nonfunctional this time? I have no idea. I've tried every trick I could find to get it functional again, from powerwashing, to the goofy suggestions that people have written in various computer forums, to everything in-between. I've asked Google for help too many times and not once have they or their tech-guys replied. I know the touchpad is registering my fingers, because when the screen goes dark after not being used for 5 minutes, a touch of the touchpad with my fingers turns my Chromebook back on. It's super-f***ing aggravating. I'll never buy another Chromebook again.

The red screen issue might be just the ribbon cable that connects it breaking and you might be able to just replace that. Does it work with an external display or just not boot up?
@kenburt8938
@kenburt8938 5 жыл бұрын
@@pamelahusky1179 Hi. Works fine other than red glare. Seems like it might be the ribbon cable. Tilting screen far back eliminates the red but gives me necks cramps! Red starts along the bottom and shows up randomly on screen. Might look into fixing except if it's like a Lenovo pc I have apart, too intricately jammed together for me to replace the keyboard, likely it will be added to the pile of obsolete pc's I have reminding me of why I despise windows! Repair shops tell me none are worth fixing, like the red screen Chromebook. Very irritated with the way many things are made today and my eyes and fingers don't seem to be able to work together or it's my mind too frustrated to handle intricate matters anymore. Gave up fly fishing and tying flies years ago too! The new Chromebook is super fast, relatively inexpensive and great for shopping online, you tube video watching and attempts at writing, nothing of which ever reaches an end! Plus, when Google was Google, not Alphabet, their outlook on making the internet thru Chromebooks available to everyone for low cost and how everyone could contribute to making the world better for all, still means something. Thank you for the advice now if I can get the enthusiasm to attempt a repair, still, there's part of me that likes having two working Chromebooks. Also I know exactly where by the left hinge to press with my thumb to make the red disappear, for random times! Red appears frequently when the Chromebooks on my lap not so much on a table, especially if left open all the time. Thank you for inspiring me to look into the cable fix though, take care, enjoy life and Chromebooking!

@@kenburt8938 If tilting it eliminates the red on the screen, that's definitely the cable and you might even be able to find one cheap on ebay. I had a monitor that would be green unless the cable to that was on a certain angle so I know what you're dealing with.

Hey, just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your video. I also own a chromebook and I think that everything you said was very accurate and you gave the average user the idea of what it is to own a chromebook! Nice job.

Well presented review video very thorough and I enjoyed how you took the time to explain how well how the devices paired up with the chrome book. You you also did a very good job at talking about the many applications including Lenix which is a big interest to me. Looking forward to additional videos.
