Eggs and honey where my last animal products to stop using. I honestly didn’t know why it was bad to eat eggs. I watched your “Why We Aren’t Vegetarian” video where you mentioned the male hens being ground up. I immediately started doing my research and was shocked at what I was witnessing. It’s so disgusting. I remember I ate eggs one last time and felt so bad afterwards but that was it. It won’t be happening ever again.

The eggs are unfertilized so there is no living animal or embryo and will never be a living breathing thing. Fertilized eggs are just nasty, there’s the baby chicken in it still developing and it’s just disgusting.

I like how Bosh! does tofu scramble. They use extra firm tofu and then blend silken tofu, turmeric, black salt and gnooch into a puree and pour it in and it scrambles up with the extra firm tofu and has a very similar texture to scrambled eggs. I personally love breakfast burritos so I make tofu scramble with extra firm tofu. I start out by sauteeing onions, add vegan sausage (I'm currently loving Gardein's sausage, which I chop up and add) depending on whether I want it will add peppers or spinach. But generally just use some cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, black salt, pepper, turmeric and gnooch and picante sauce. Sometimes I'll make it with Frieda's Soyrizo as well. I love tofu scramble

You mention subsidies in this video; I would love to see a video going in depth on the subsidies provided for animal products, or if you have any links, podcasts, etc... I would be very interested in learning more about this in detail. I think it's something that we hear and regurgitate a lot, but without fully understanding the details and being able to explain if questioned on it specifically ~ at least in my case.

I didn’t 100% get it until I had a parakeet who had egg binding often. It was when the egg would get stuck in her body instead of flow out. And every time she had an egg, her life would be in danger. Every time she had an egg inside, I would be so worried until she passed it. Twice she got the egg caught and her vet told me he could remove it but she might die. She survived that but sadly died two years ago of a tumor. I had 9 1/2 wonderful years with her and she had been healthy except for the egg binding and then finally the tumor. But, egg binding is real and a horrible thing for bird to have to go through. And I would sometimes rush to the vet in the middle of the night with her. I am sure chicken farmers don’t do that. So sad.

People often think birds aren’t smart and they are so wrong. A parrot is as smart as a 3 year old child. I've been vegan for about 3+ years at this point, and recently I started wanting eggs, but not eggs themselves. I'm curious if it's more of a nostalgic/breakfast want or if there is a supposed nutrient my body is wanting. Regardless, even though I seem to be wanting them recently, when I think about actually having real eggs I get grossed out. That pretty much happens with anything that is not vegan that I may have a fleeting thought about. I just don't see any of that as real food anymore.

I fully respect vegans right to not eat any animal products but I thought I would add my own views too. My grandparents had a smallholding with a veg plot, poultry and a flock of pet sheep. I stayed with them for years, helping out while I studied at a local university. The poultry (ducks and hens) were for the most part free range, as they had no restrictions on where they could go during the day. they wandered around the area around their coup, they wandered through the garden, veg patch and surrounding fields they sometimes ended up in the house if we left the door open. However we did shut the door to the coup at night when they were roosting as we had lots of predators in the area. We did not force hens or ducks into their coup and some routinely choose to roost on top of the coup and in the high hedge by the house instead. The only times we restricted their movement was; when we put an injured bird in solitary so that it had time to recover (other birds can and will kill injured birds even within their flock), and also when we had a broody female (we would separate her and her clutch otherwise when the chicks start to hatch other hens will often try to steel them and the mother often abandons her nest to protect them leaving the other chicks to go cold and die in their shells). Birds were only killed if they were dying. We did have cockerals with the hens so pretty much all of the eggs would have been fertilised and viable however if their are no broody hens to sit on them then the eggs won't develop they just go rancid. Chickens lay a lot of eggs in a year and most of the time they just aren't interested in incubating them and I wouldn't blame them as long periods of brooding aren't good for their health. You can't force hens to be broody. Our flock was often very willy nilly about where they left eggs. You would find them in the middle of the lawn, in flowerpots, bushes, water buckets, pathways, field boundaries etc. The amount of times that I stepped on a rancid egg hidden by overgrown weeds or grass is rediculous. If an egg isn't going to be incubated then I have absolutely no problem with eating it. I am also happy with the quality of the flocks life as they were well looked after. Their lives weren't without hardship especially with attacks from predators and in flock fighting but overall it was good. Several of them were happy to spend time with you, one cock used to follow me around and fly onto my shoulder where he would crow before sitting down to enjoy the ride as I pottered arround. Others cocks hated me and would insist on kicking me in the back of my legs, so to each their own. To counter this I would like to say that most commercial and some personal poultry keeping is terrible. Living conditions are abhorrent and more mature hens are bumped off when they stop being as "productive". Not to mention young male chicks. Even supposed "free range" keepers aren't necessarily what you would like to think of. Most people have become so far removed from food production that they are blind to the standards of the food industry. I am not saying that everyone has the time, money or space to keep their own poultry because they just don't but everyone should be as informed as they can be with their food. I was interested about something else. On the topic of meat, where do vegans stand on eating roadkill? I know that it sounds a bit gross but while living with my grandparents I frequently collected, butchered, cooked and ate roadkill. We lived in the countryside and unfortunately lots of local wildlife ended up dead on the roads. If i walked to a neighbors house and spotted a freshly killed rabbit or a phesant on the way back then I would bring it back with me. It is when you think about it a cruelty free and pretty carbon neutral way of obtaining meat. You haven't driven anywhere to buy it and it died before you got to it, it hasn't suffered any more than it would have otherwise. I am not suggesting that people go out and run things over purposefully but taking already dead animals off the road deters scavengers from dieing on the roads too. I am aware that veganism is a lifestyle and spiritual choice rather than a dietry choice and it revolves around not causing harm or suffering to animals. Therefore would a vegan consider this sort of thing ok? Or is it still a big no-no?

I thought I would add a bit about their sheep as well as I don't know where most vegans stand on wool and I would be interested in finding out. My grandparents kept a smallish flock of sheep. They weren't eaten and they were pretty much self sufficient most of the year. They were a cross between Jacobs sheep and Shetland sheep (a pretty wild and hardy breed). We would feed them in the winter as grass doesn't grow under a certain temperature, we would occasionally hand rear abandoned lambs, we never removed balls or docked the tails as they weren't long enough to cause an issue. Some long tailed breeds need to have it shortened to prevent lots of poo from sticking to their backside which can result in festering rot and maggots that eat living flesh I have seen this (thankfully not in our flock) and trust me, the look and smell would make you sick to your stomach not to mention how it felt for the poor sheep (proper nightmare fuel). I also used to catch them all one by one in the summer so that I could sheer them, trim their hooves and worm them. This whole process took about ten minutes (I had the old fashioned sheers and I am not as practiced as professionals who can do it very quickly). Some sheep were pretty chill about the whole thing and others really weren't happy and would let you know with a well aimed hoof or a parting headbutt. They then went on their merry way and I would bundle the wool into the corner of the field. Sometimes we used the wool in walking paths (structural), other times we used it for insulation, rarely it was carded and spun and used but most of the time it was just left to rot. Raw fleeces don't sell for much and it isn't worth it for most small farms as people charge more for pickup than you get from selling. Just because they weren't used doesn't mean that you don't have to do it though. Leaving fleeces on over summer can result in heatstroke and infestations of flesh eating maggots and the sheep can't squish them or remove them due to the obstruction. It is also lovely to see newly shorn adults prancing around like lambs. Wool is a natural fibre (far better for climate change and reducing plastic waste) it is also very versatile and can be used in construction and insulation as well as clothing. However it is not 100% free from animal suffering. While not afraid for their lives some of the flock were strongly displeased and indignant about the whole thing. So where do people stand on wool? Sheep don't inherently enjoy being shorn but it is a relatively short and pain free experience when compared with the alternative and they seem to thoroughly enjoy the rest of their lives. Would it be better if they were all put down so that they didn't have to suffer through ten minutes of mild unpleasantness a year? Sheep grazing is used to manage habitats for conservation purposes (peat bogs, grasslands, etc) this helps to save endangered species like orchids and butterflies sometimes heavier animals like horse wouldn't do especially on bogs where they may fall through and drown. Sheep are also very hardy and can survive in some pretty strange place where it would be impossible to grow crops (rocky ground, steep slopes, altitude, etc) so you often couldn't grow cotton in their place therefore you would have to deforest or convert a more productive area of land instead.

I totally agree. It can be uncomfortable for the sheep when they get sheared but in the end it’s what’s good for them because otherwise they would really struggle in summer

Soooo much yakety-yak for people who don't eat eggs! A real debate between vegans and non-vegans or ex-vegans would have been more courageous and honest. On a side note, if you are THAT concerned with animal cruelty, watch out the floor where you walk! You've probably killed hundreds of tiny living insects under your feet! Don't these living beings deserve respect just like chickens? Don't they have a nervous system and feel pain?

The question is “why don’t vegans eat eggs”, not “why don’t vegans support the chicken industry”. An egg is NOT a chicken minstrel, and there’s no scientific evidence that laying eggs is painful to hens. I clicked on this video to hear an honest explanation to something that I was curious about, and all I hear is miss information. First eating eggs has nothing to do with the chicken industry. I own 4 chickens, and they eat all the bugs in the yard. I don’t force them to lay eggs, and I never plan on eating them. I still don’t understand why vegans don’t eat non fertilize eggs. In every city, someone is selling eggs, from chickens they are raising themselves. Also chickens lay eggs, because hens always need a clutch of eggs to lay on. If left alone a chicken will lay over a hundred eggs a year, due to eggs cracking or being eaten. The only reason she lays, say one a day in captivity, is because we take the eggs. But laying eggs, is a natural to chickens, as is having a misinformed informed opinion is, to humans. Taking an egg, is like taking an apple off a tree(an apple that’s meant to fertilize the ground around a tree, or to feed animals that naturally help fertilize and spread the seeds of apple trees). So I don’t get it. My hypothesis is that a lot people, in ignorance, believed that all eggs would become chicks someday, so they immediately jumped on the I don’t eggs bandwagon. Then when they became aware that the eggs we eat, aren’t actual chick eggs, they remained the course out sheer pride, and that’s just become the movement years later. But I guess there’s no actual logical reason, which is totally okay too. Just be honest and say I don’t know why I don’t eat eggs, I just don’t. That statement makes more sense.
@TheVeganView
@TheVeganView 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for taking the time the time share your point of view. Here’s the thing, you owning a chicken and taking the eggs that occur naturally is not the same things as what goes on in the animal agriculture industry where chickens are genetically mortified and exploited as egg laying machines. The conditions they’re kept in the, what they are fed, and the way they are killed is cruel from start to finish. And that’s where the majority of eggs that people consume in this country - and around the world - come from. We’re not talking about 4 backyard chickens, were talking about millions of animals a year. Highly recommend checking out Earthling Ed on Instagram. He has a highlight on his page called “Vegetarian?” And if you click through a few slides it will get to the hens and it may give you a better idea about where we’re coming from. Hope that helps clear things up! Hope you’re having a nice day 💚
