Today, we’re going to tell you why Veracruz is the best state in Mexico. And we’re doing that from the Port of Veracruz during the most exciting time of year: Carnaval de Veracruz!
Veracruz Mexico is where you will find the Port of Veracruz, the oldest and most important seaport in Mexico. In this video we are going to walk around Veracruz taking you to the zocalo and down to the malecon where we learn about the history of Veracruz through it’s many buildings, and the oldest cafe in Veracruz, El Gran Cafe de la Parroquia where we will sip on it’s specialty Cafe Lechero! Of course we make time for a seafood lunch as Veracruz Mexico is known for their seafood dishes and check out the Veracruz beaches.

Thank you for sharing this visit to Veracruz - I hope to visit there soon for many reasons. I’m a Black American who has recently moved to Mexico City, and I just love la gente, la cultura, todo la comida, los museos y más. I even love the loud sounds of the vendors moving thru the streets when I’m in my apartment, jaja. Everyone has been so gracious & welcoming. Working hard on my Spanish lessons so I can make more friends here. So I really appreciate all of the information you share as I continue to learn & appreciate more about my new home country.

México is a country of countries, we are not a race or a culture or ethnicity, we are different cultures, ethnicities and traditions. We are multicultural and diverse, but even like that we are very proud of been part of such melt of colors and cultures. México is more complicated that you can imagine.

😅 it was a risky comment to make, but I'm glad you appreciate it! We like to bring our authentic inner thoughts to these videos, not just the shallow "hey look at me at this cool place" kind of travel videos. Welcome to the channel, chica! 🤗

and speaking of talking about liberation of enslaved folks.. there's a book that just came out in Veracruz called "La Negritud de Veracruz" to discuss the overlooked cultural contributions of afromexicans and their history that's often glossed over in the education system. The author is inviting us to collab to talk about the book on our channel, so if that ends up happening, I think you might be interested in that particular episode!

I am in Mexico and it is amazing, the food is great but the people are far better - such friendly, kind, hospitable people - they say good morning to you even though they don't know you, they're helpful, they're polite and the miserable swines where I come from should all come to Mexico to learn how to be. Thanks to your videos I came here and it is the best thing I have ever done regards travelling descions - it was between here and Brazil and I chose here because it is winter in Rio and I am really glad I did - thank you for your videos and keep up the excellent work.

Great video! My husband is from the state of Veracruz and I used to live there as well (I'm Canadian). We would drive to the port on occasion and I loved it there. Learned more with your video. It's funny when you guys said Veracruz port is one of the hottest places in Mexico because it was actually a cooler break for us to go there since you have the breeze to help you stay cool. And yes I definitely did shower 3 times per day in the hotter months in my husband's town 😆 I also see the problem with guero and guera but from what I can tell most Mexicans don't think anything of it. I found it so strange the emphasis they put on skin color there. We were just in Veracruz port in December and we enjoyed it again. It was fun seeing all the places you were at that we went to. We might move back to Mexico for a year now that our kids are older so they can learn the language and culture better. I'm thinking Veracruz port might be a nice option for us.

I just returned from an 8-day tour of the ancient civilizations of Mexico which included La Venta Park and Veracruz. The African influence on Veracruz is quite obvious in the music, food and people. As an African American it was heartwarming to see so many chocolate people, both milk and dark. I look forward to returning to Veracruz and visiting the town of Yanga.

You guys sounded to me like you were looking for a reason to be offended. This immigrant was not bearing a sword, to conquer. all he had was his suitcase and whatever skills he possesed. these people helped Mexico to develop into what it is.We are better off because because of them. Americans are not bothered because British people continued to immagrate to North America after their independance. Anyway I like your videos and wish you sucess.

It makes sense to me that you too would choose Vera Cruz as your favorite state because you are into salsa dancing. I don't have an opinion on Vera Cruz yet since I haven't been but its on my list, especially since it is not an overly touristy area. My favorite state so far is Jalisco and a close runner up is Guerrero. I am a beach person and so far my favorite beach destination is Zihuatenejo. A lot of the videos of beaches in Vera Cruz seem quite underwhelming but I will need to see them for myself. Thanks for the videos, your channel is excellent. 😊

You guys are great. I loved the video! I just wanted to mention that I can see how the güera/güero comment is problematic these days, I think it's just a straight-up selling tactic, though. After all, we are jarochos. I usually refer to older women as muchachas, and they love it, and they get a laugh too and it helps me engage with strangers! It's like risky sarcasm, you might offend some. I bet you if they saw a European person, they'd called them "paisanos" or something outrageous just to be funny. Idk if this makes it better or not. Maybe it's time to update the selling tactic.
@EatBailaTravel
@EatBailaTravel 4 ай бұрын
Hola! Yea, I agree it is a selling tactic. The intent is flattery and raises the issue of colorism: white/light-skinned folks are deemed "more attractive" and by implying someone looks like so is intended to send that message. You never hear them yelling "moreno/morena" to try to flatter someone into buying.

I love the folk dances of Veracruz & it was sweet to see you 'tying the knot' while dancing at your wedding.♥️♥️ Now....in terms of the Spanish 'immigrants', I can only say that someone was suffering from a serious case of amnesia OR it's a Mexican@ who is extremely 'educad@' who didn't want to stir up any controversy or hurt any feelings....Hmmmmmmm ..... And speaking of controversy, I surely hope they don't yell güer@ at me when I visit, considering that I am of African ancestry by way of the U.S. West Coast .🤨 But some mindsets you cannot change so instead of being extremely vocal about it, it might be nice to sit down with the owners and ask them how they think various kinds of people feel about the shouting of 'güer@' when they themselves are proud of their own race and complexions....The young workers need a job so they probably would keep any opposing opinions to themselves. Thank you again for another wonderfully entertaining & educational video.

Veracruz had lots of Spanish immigrants, that is who they are referring to, the immigrant population that settled there not the Conquistadores, there is a huge difference between the two, same way there's a difference between black conquistadores (which there were many who helped the Spanish conquer Amerindians and our lands) and a big difference the forced population that were brought here. Güera/o will be used no matter your race, and it is Mexico, we do not care about your feelings, do not try to go out there and shove people your American racial views, don't be a weirdo.

At the moment we didn’t really understand what the statue was for, but with such a violent history of colonization by the Spanish, our first thoughts were negative. But you both bring important points to the conversation.

Hello I am from Schaumburg IL and I have seen a few of ur videos. I am of Mexican descent but born here in the States i have been to Mexico in my younger days only to vacation but now closing in on retirement. Would Veracruz be ideal? I am in my fifties so mobility is not to much of a concern but if it did become an issue would Mexico be crossed of my list? Thank you and you two are great and make me laugh and put a big smile on my face.

Saludos. ✍️

I'm so glad we can make you smile! 😊 and Veracruz as a state to retire I think is a great option. It's affordable and the northern part of the state has great weather. The port of Veracruz can get uncomfortably hot, so like someone else has mentioned in a reply to your comment, I'd recommend considering the city of Xalapa or even Orizaba or Cordoba. We have a few videos on Orizaba but none on Cordoba, which is the next town over.

Bonito video!

I’ve seen videos of different cities there like Orizaba, Xalapa and I was very impressed with all there is to do and see, deep rooted in history, beautiful architecture and parks, family friendly, top notch museums, lush and green, delicious food and wonderful people! I think Veracruz is like a hidden gem! I can’t figure out why still very much under the radar! I thank you guys for showing off Veracruz! I do agree with you guero y guera! No offense! The statue refers to the immigrant population of Spain that entered Mexico once the Conquistadores establish it and gave it a green light to have Spaniards settle in the nation. So it is a correct term, they had nothing to do with the conquest of Mexico in any way, given that more than 90% of those Spanish immigrants according to date were between the ages of 16-23. They entered Mexico fleeing poverty since they were peasants from the country side of Spain, majority from Andalusia and Extremadura. Nieves Guero-Guero has nothing to do with what you just mentioned, here is the story behind that phrase. "Pero además del sabor y la tradicional forma de elaborar sus nieves, mantienen el grito que invita a comprar una rica nieve de la época en la que marinos mercantes de otros países desembarcaban en este mismo punto. Relata que hace años eran mujeres las que llamaban la atención de los marinos llamándoles güeros, y ese mismo llamado utilizan ahora a forma de sátira con cualquier persona que camina en la zona, sin importar su aspecto" Another thing, the definition of Guero/a has changed, someone as dark as your husband/boyfriend will refer to you as a guera because you are lighter than him. Has nothing to do with them making you feel attractive or something, you are a guera to someone darker than you and you will get called that eventually once you start venturing in indigenous communities or afromexican communities. You need to keep that in mind and be more open minded, the Mexico your parents left is not the same you are now visiting, definitions have changed.

Veracruz was heavily visited by Pirates of the Caribbean. The bloodline in that area is known for its high sex drive. Some of the locals say it’s because Pirates picked up women in different European Brothels and dropped them off in Veracruz. Mixing the bloodline.

Took a few days out to comment on whether you should air your opinions on the statue of Spanish immigration in Veracruz and I think you should and I think it's a legitimate opinion, saying that there are two things that I would consider and the first one is that the statue represents Spaniards fleeing war and hunger and they found a home in Mexico and many stayed there so it is a statue about Mexico giving a home to people fleeing war and giving them shelter. I - like you both - did a DNA test and we all have Spanish DNA and therefore our ancestors were probably the conquistadors who took the land and wealth from the indigenous peoples and committed great atrocities - like the modern day German with the atrocities the Nazi's committed all around Europe, you can accept that it was actually our ancestors who came to the Americas and did these heinous things and speak out against what they did whilst admitting they are part of our bloodline - my first Spanish ancestor came to the Americas in the 1500's so he is definitely as guilty as sin - but - it definitely wasn't the Spaniards who came on the boats fleeing the Spanish Civil War and I doubt many of their ancestors did what our ancestors did so I don't think they should be held culpable but you are right to say 'Spain' (and the Catholic Church) as it was then did commit great atrocities against the peoples of the Americas and you can also condemn those actions being modern Mexican citizens of today. If you feel strongly about these subjects, I think you should air these opinions in your videos for sure and I look forward to hearing more of them. I am now off to have my breakfast!
@EatBailaTravel
@EatBailaTravel 11 ай бұрын
thanks for coming back to comment on that! We weren't sure exactly what the statue was intended for, but I think you might be right about it being towards Spanish refugees from the Franco era, which I suspect is how some of my basque ancestors ended up in Mexico just a few generations ago. Someone else commented indicating that's what it was intended for and not the Spanish colonizers as we hypothesized. But in all honesty, we find it problematic and prejudice for there to be a message that honors European refugees while central-american and south-american refugees are treated like a plague. And yes, you're likely right, part of our Spanish ancestry very likely also includes conquistadores who committed awful atrocities. Thanks so much for taking the time to write out your thoughts. These types of reflections are so important! I appreciate you
