Video game consoles have not really been increasing in terms of sales, and in this video from Going Indie the reasons are explored. Will the Xbox Series X|S be the final Xbox console? Will the PlayStation 5 be the final PS5 unit produced? Will the Nintendo Switch continue printing money? Time will tell, but while consoles aren't going away any time soon, there's a good chance that the Xbox news of the future will not be about a new console, but about new games and services being more widely available.

No I don't think so. However, if they do I'll be back to PC... they're not going anywhere. I almost never became a console gamer because when I bought my first powerful PC there was nothing that could compare. Everything gets old however and moods and money changes, so I made the switch and haven't been on PC since.

And he said it should tell you where things are at, when gaming is just as popular as ever. 50 million PS5s in 3 shirt years should tell you where it's at. If they keep the same pace, PS5 will outsell PS2 by decades end. PS4 I year 11 still has games. PS5 lifespan is still very young. As more games come, more people want it, and PS5 is a hot item, especially Q4. I think we will see 100 million sales in 2-2.5 years honestly. Someone said "I have to get a PS5 now that Rebirth is PS5 only". Those moments will continue the more PS4 is left behind because everyone has that favorite franchise they have to have. The amount of exclusives for PS5, both 1st Party & 2nd Party is smoking the competition.

Pretending that the Switch is not a console is so silly. Nintendo violates his narrative by having a wildly successful console so he pretends it doesn't count for some arbitrary reason. The Switch covers literally 100% of the functionality of any other console. Just because it ALSO includes full handheld functionality doesn't in any way invalidate the fact that it's still a game console (and a damn good one at that). That's like saying Sony exited the console market with the PS2 because it could also play DVDs, so it's a DVD player now and not a console anymore. Offering additional, desirable functionality in your console (while still delivering the full uncompromised console experience) doesn't make it not a console.

@@doolbedolc Physical hardware is usually still required to use a subscription. Sub services also aren't viable for gaming in the larger ecosystem unless you're willing to take huge losses to start. Which eliminates 99% of all other businesses. Digital stores like STEAM, and PS & Nintendo sales show native gaming/ purchasing AAA games is far more popular than any of the sub services in gaming. Unless a particular sub service can capture enough subscribers then they will end up losing tons of money. Hence why in the FTC trial we learned that MS wants at least 100 Million subscribers by 2027 to be viable in the future. Even Phil Spencer predicted that GamePass would only account for 15% of their revenue... Meaning the remaining 85%, the vast majority, won't be generated by subscription anytime soon. @kenpanderz
@kenpanderz Ай бұрын
its a combination of like, 4 factors: fanbase, price point, game exclusivity and uniqueness. the fanbase massively props up consoles by acting as metrics tons of good publicity and advertisement. the pricepoint lowers the bar for entry for both recurring and new players, to where a parent will buy the cheapest console because they dont know the differences between them. game exclusivity helps drive console sales, because you can only play the new Zelda on the switch, for instance. and "uniqueness" of the device, which often Nintendo is the front runner here, implementing motion controls so boldly as to make it the main function of the Wii, as an example. the other consoles are very samey and more expensive than Nintendo devices, and so if you were going in blind and had to choose which console to get, the uniqueness of the device and the lower price point alone would be major factors for choosing a Nintendo device. though that all being said, phones and PCs are still "better" generally because of their versatility, more widely varying price ranges, and lower barrier to entry than even a Nintendo device. though this is most prominent in countries outside of America for various reasons.

I honestly think the future of gaming is gaming handhelds not mobile. You loose something tactile with a touch screen that makes phones always awkward to play on, but stuff like the switch, steam deck, claw, ally etc... they just seem so right for the market we are in.
@kenpanderz
@kenpanderz Ай бұрын
i really hope thats the direction we go in. i feel like consoles have been stagnating for so long now they have very little to offer that isnt available with Tower-based PCs or powerful laptops. but portable gaming with physical controls, rather than on-screen touch controls, is a relatively untapped market, only a few devices being widely produced, even fewer being powerful enough to meaningfully keep up with more demanding games. you just cant reasonably play fast-paced games with touch screen controls alone, so phones cant really replace the Switch/Steamdeck in that regard. i really think the future of gaming should be PC's and Handhelds only. PC's for power-gaming at home, and Handhelds for on-the-go gaming, such as long distance travel. i dont dislike consoles, i just think they're largely redundant and it would be better to reduce the number of devices you have to buy to play all the good games being made the way you want to play them.

Mario wonder sold more in 2 days than spiderman 2 did . Suicide squad might sell well but so far everything I've seen and read from people's reactions its not what we want and as being a father I don't have time to play 15 live service titles. Unpopular opinion: The Xbox one was great. For me it was the reason to com back to console gaming after 12 years only on PC. I loved the Kincet voice commands and face recognition. It was more than ust a gaming console it was a multimedia center and I loved it for that. Now I have to chose between Xbox and PC becaue I can't afford upgrading and buying gamess for both. And PC is the most important piece of electronics to me in my household. So I quit Xbox and go back to 100% PC. I still use my Kinect on PC and stay in Xbox Network and Game PAss

There are 3 parts to the gaming ecosystem: platform holder, 3rd party developers, end users. Beyond any other dis/advantages consoles have, eg ownership costs or lower power, it offers one prime advantage - relatively hassle free development only a unified platform provides. That's why consoles will always be a thing.

But since that hasn't happened yet, I'm askin you to invite him and you both react to that, that would be so great 😊. And if he doesn't want to, then you could invite Miranda, Mark Medina or some guests like Kahlief. And if no one wants, then you can do it alone. It's: _Xbox One: Podcast Unlocked Special Edition Ep. 96_ You were there with Ryan and a lot of other people with a special guest. Great video. Yes Microsoft has slowly been shifting their focus away from console hardware to software. They realize that develop hardware that will have games designed for it for 5-7+ years just to do it all again isn’t moving the needle. Being the publisher and having games on every platform imaginable is where the money is. Having these “walled gardens” is an unsustainable treadmill. I am curious as to how Sony will respond or if they can respond. This will change the industry on its head.

I don't know a single core gamer that has "jumped ship" to phones. PC's perhaps, but not a single one has jumped to just playing games on their phone, unless they simply don't play AAA games anymore. They aren't necessarily overlapping markets, and when MS, and Phil Spencer talk about "2 Billion gamers", they're fully aware that most of those people don't want to play Halo, God of War or Elden Ring. The barrier to entry isn't the hardware, or even cost... it's interest. My girlfriend, Mom, sister and some friends aren't playing games because they don't have access, they don't play AAA games because they have no interest. Most of these people literally have consoles sitting in their homes due to a family member or partner having one, and never once wanted to turn them on for themselves. They're fine playing Candy Crush on their phones during a lunch break and moving on. They don't want to play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, they just don't. The PC crowd are simply more entrenched gamers, who typically have more disposable income. They aren't destroying the console market either as they are simply a more niche pool of gamers. Some 3rd party devs don't even like putting their games on PC because of rampant piracy/ smaller overall pool of buyers or bring the games to the platform much later. Just look at GTA VI as a perfect example. This notion that consoles are going away isn't even supported by data which suggests that the console market is GROWING, not shrinking... Nor is it backed by any shift in the markets behavior. Even Phil Spencer said GamePass has stagnated despite being on more devices than ever before. Until the crowd that buys consoles stop buying them, or sub services overtake console purchasers (won't happen) then you'll continue to see consoles.We have at least another 20 years of consoles ahead of us. Fully expect to see a PS7, which will likely go well past 2040.

The switch is a handheld 1st. Including a dock video out isn't an innovation but the next step in handheld competition. PSP had optional cables for video out. Vita had its internals put into a separate box called Vita TV instead of including HDMI out on the Vita itself. Both handhelds let you use PS3/4 controller. PSP GO even let you use Dual Shock 3 (Nintendo PRO Controller) without a tv, just like the Switch but it came before the Switch. PS2 Ethernet was separate but included on Xbox which came after the PS2. Switch misses out on the highest tier games Such as Alan Wake 2, Baldurs Gate 3, Cyberpunk, FF7 Remake. Switch can only handle low to mid tier games, technically wise. Switch is for Nintendo games and 3rd party exclusives while XB and PS are for everything that isn't exclusive to Nintendo.

I don't see the console going anywhere. You can buy a console for 260/400 bucks and have a great time with it, no shader compilation stutters, no expensive GPU market, no driver issues, no multiple gaming launchers, super efficient, exclusive, no authentication, easy and fast use, couch gaming, disc support and far less cheating, something that kills older games on PC. Even on the eyes of devs the console is a far better options just by the amount of money they loose on paying anti cheat company's, anti piracy and optimizing their games on PC.

I think you have to be obtuse to say you were confused if the Xbox one was a Console or not.I think announcement of the original Xbox one was done the way that it was because Microsoft was trying to spin the Xbox announcement in a way that will get more people to buy the Xbox in the same way that PlayStation got more people to buy the PS2 and the PS3 Because the PS2 sold very well because it had been included DVD player and the PS3 while it’s struggled it had the absolute benefit of having to include a Blu-ray player at the time. So I will always think that Microsoft goal was to try to attract more people into the ecosystem by trying to spin it as an all in one device even though they clearly talked about gaming at the announcement they had call of duty and I believe they announce quantum break there originally.

I don’t think mobile is ever gonna catch up on a hardware level. Games running natively will always be a novelty; it’s waiting for the cloud in my opinion. Only now an iPhone can play games at a level below even PS4. Also yes I agree on Sony right now, it’s very concerning. I feel like that gamble on live service has made their biggest asset (exclusives) suffer hugely even if they won’t admit it and this year’s lack of first party games is proof in my mind. If the PS6 is just another console, there is a big problem I concur.

People who think phones are going to just magically replace a console are just delusional. A mobile chip uses 5-10W with 0 cooling, while a console typically uses 200-300W with a huge intricate cooling system. That's why a 1300$ iPhone 15 max can't even outperform an 11 year old base ps4.

@@TheAmazingSpiderGuy_99 they aren’t optimized nor developed for the platform. I developed my own emulator using some open source code and I’ve been able to play ps2 titles without an issue. Native titles if they were ported and optimized can run on an iPhone easily. An iPhone 12 with the A14 Bionic chip could EASILY play any Xbox 360 title at 60 fps or more max settings. It could also play many Xbox 1 titles without an issue if ported properly. Just because they aren’t doing it doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. Games like Fortnite showed it was possible 4 years ago without an issue. Valorant mobile is coming AC mirage among others. Game developers are finally realizing there is potential in mobile gaming. Streaming/Play Anywhere will diminish the numbers of consoles sold... I dont think its a full replacement, but its very good in a pinch. What I see is a decline in absolute console sales, but a growth in players and games sold and played. I do like the shift away from limiting hardware. If I want I can play most of my most popular games on PC or on console, and then there are some I can stream on almost any screen. Hopefully this means everything is forward compatible. As far as the Xbox One Era goes... there was a notible amount of anti~Xbox PR running around pre launch. Many of it untrue or simply rumors. PS4 was slightly faster in Flops and people swore up and down in all the comments that was the sole metric they would buy on.

The problem is these console players want consoles to be like PCs. If you want a console to be a PC so bad buy a PC. The reason consoles were so good back in the day was because it was never about the power and It was more about the games and I think a lot of these companies forget what made consoles as big as they were to begin with.

Here’s something people sleep on, “gamification” if console manufacturers don’t gamify their consoles more, then there will be no need for them. It doesn’t just have to be about exclusives, it should be about the “experience” overall you can’t get on PC easily or officially. The problem is Sony and Microsoft don’t understand this, neither does Nintendo but Nintendo has an IP that proves it works. Look at Pokemon HOME, you can’t get home officially on PC, because it’s server back end. Sure you can use PKHek to create fake Pokemon, to inject into home and it might work, but you can’t download home or inject mons from home itself. Pokémon HOME is gamification, it adds an experience outside of the games you can’t get anywhere else. That’s the future of consoles, achievements were a good start, but then both Microsoft and Sony just left them in the dust to become utterly meaningless. A console isn’t just about exclusives, it needs to be more than that now. Services, experiences, applications as middle points between games to add extra value. Look at WoW how it jumps from expansion to expansion. Bringing your stuff with you, a collective history. That’s what consoles need, no one realises it yet though, fully. NFTs were not it. Way too much focus on money and greed and sleazy scams from low effort lazy devs.
