The duel between Albus Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort at the ministry was a serious battle! It was something we were all hoping for but honestly before the order of the phoenix came out, I really didn’t think JK would pair these 2 incredible wizards against each other so soon but pair them she did and what a scene it was. However I’ve always wondered why the duel ended in a stalemate. Voldemort was obviously duelling to kill while Dumbledore normally always duelled to disarm and restrain only. In todays video I’m going to analyse why the duel between the 2 seen no winner and more importantly why Voldemort failed to kill his former head master.

Because Dumbledore was more powerful. It’s that simple. Always been and always will be. Voldemort was humiliated in that battle, with Dumbledore not even trying to kill him and being absolutely relaxed the entire battle. He had to resort to possessing Harry (and that’s the only thing that made Dumbledore worry), and when not even that worked, he ran away like a bitch and was so afraid of challenging Dumbledore again that he actually sent Draco and his Death Eaters to assassinate him. Dumbledore didn’t even want to harm or destroy Voldemort’s body, because he knew that specific body (containing Harry’s blood and so his mother’s protection) had to remain intact for Harry to survive at the end.

Tales from Tu'narath When Harry comes back from the graveyard in book 4, he tells Dumbledore that Voldemort used his own blood to get past his mother’s protection. For a fleeting instant, Harry swore he could see victory in Dumbledore’s eyes. That was exactly what Dumbledore wanted. Dumbledore wanted Voldemort to use Harry’s blood for his new body because that would guarantee that Lily’s protection would live inside Voldemort’s body too, which meant that Harry could be “protected” and choose to come back once he’d sacrifice himself to destroy the piece of Voldemort’s soul in his body. That was the only way to prevent Harry from dying too when the piece of Voldemort’s soul inside his body was to be killed. Dumbledore played Voldemort like a fiddle, and Voldemort did exactly what Dumbledore wanted, which was to use Harry’s blood for the ritual. To think that if only Voldemort listened to Wormtail (who told him that he could use anyone’s blood to come back), Harry would have had to really die to actually be able to kill Voldemort...

Dumbledore was aware that Voldemort had split his soul so he wasn’t trying to Kill him. Dumbledore was aware that it was essential that the horocruxes were to be destroyed before they kill Voldemort. There is no way to use this duel to judge who was stronger.. however Voldemort was clearly going all out and Dumbledore was holding back.. Simply implies Dumbledore was stronger.

@@wiserlief No. Dumbledore knew about Horcruxes. He knew that Riddle's diary was one, and suspected that Nagini was one too (hence the speculation on 'in essence divided' in Order of the Phoenix). What Dumbledore wasn't certain of was how many Horcruxes he had made; this was why he needed Harry to collect Slughorn's memory in Half-Blood Prince to confirm that Voldemort had wanted to make six of them in order to spilt his soul seven times. The other main reason to pass on all this info to Harry in book 6 was because Dumbledore knew he was going to die, and hence needed to set Harry up to destroy them instead.

@@wiserlief He found out about the horcruxes 100% for sure in book 2 (although it is implied he likely knew about how Riddle survived past death well before, as Slughorn talked about Dumbledore being overtly strict on the subject of Horcuxes, to the student Riddle). He simply reacted to the diary as "proof my theories were correct". And he clearly understoof there were more since the Horcux was not well hidden or protected. Dumbledore could have easily blasted Riddle to pieces, but it would only delay the inevitable, since he knew the prophecy. Also recall, he didn't just push Riddle to a full retreat, he defeated Bellatrix at the same time.....and Bellatrix was often talked about as being the most powerful deatheater.

Except that in the book he is cornered between to curses(Voldemort apparates behind him) and fawkes has to die to save his life. After this battle, in the book, Dumbledore claims that if Voldemort ever came back at Full Power not even his strongest charms would be enough to stop him.

Voldemort and his Death Eaters were terrorizing the wizarding world and dismantling the Order of the Phoenix with basically zero direct opposition from Dumbledore until the events of Godric’s Hollow. Dumbledore did not know about the Horcruxes then and he never dared to duel Voldemort, with Grindelwald he had no problem going to a foreign country and fortress to duel him, why did he not do the same with Voldemort?

I love the subtlety of harry thinking things are safe when Dumbledore has Voldemort trapped in the water sphere and approaching Dumbledore to marvel and dumbledore throwing harry back knowing this battle is no where close to being over. It really shows how the 2 view Voldemort differently at that point in the story. Harry knows voldemort is powerful but thinks dumbledore is stronger and has always had fate and been comfortable around dumbledore. I'm sure Dumbledore had a very deep knowledge of dark magic, but like Sirius black said to Harry about us all having light and dark, Dumbledore chose to use the knowledge he had for good. Nathan Brown it was a tie 100%! before the duel he protected Harry, then the statue pushed Harry away so Dumbledore could fight Voldemort one on one. Voldemort shot 5 killing curses directly at Dumbledore NOT harry, so no he didnt have to protect Harry as he faught Voldemort. You forget Dumbledore was the greatest wizard ever with the elder wand & fawkes took a killing curse for him, so it was rather Dumbledore who had protection by one of most badass Magical beasts. All the odds were against Voldemort. Dumbledore, fawkes, Harry, the elderwand & all the ministry aurors coming to to kill him.

David Oaklund In the video, dean asks who do we think is stronger and who do we think would win in a duel between Dumbledore and Voldemort. Considering they did duel to a stalemate (something I’m not disputing) I’m presuming he means if they both duelled to kill (which Dumbledore didn’t) who would win, and in my opinion Dumbledore would win because he protected Harry, nullified bellatrix, NEVER USED the full power of the elder wand, managed to delay voldemort long enough for fudge to arrive, and, as it’s described in the book, Dumbledore did this while acting as if he was just strolling through the ministry. These are the reasons I think Dumbledore is the stronger of the two and if they fought, no horcruxes to prevent Voldemort from dying, just a straight one on one fight, in my opinion, Dumbledore wins.

Considering that it is widely known that Dumbledore was the one wizard that Voldemort always feared, I was actually surprised that Voldemort did not flee at the sight of Dumbledore, choosing instead to give it his all. Also it didn't end in a stalemate. Dumbledore clearly won. Voldemort went full throttle and failed to kill Dumbledore. Since Dumbledore succeeded in restraining Voldemort, but Voldemort did not succeed in killing Dumbledore, Dumbledore was the winner. And yes, Dumbledore is the more powerful wizard of the two. It doesn't matter if his wand was more powerful. How Dumbledore managed to get the elder wand in the first place was by winning it. Sure, Dumbledore may not be invincible in comparison to Voldemort. But he was still more powerful, however slightly.

Yes there was absolutely no denying the fact how powerful and capable Voldermort has been the proof of which was seen through the flashbacks during his early years and later when he grew in power during the dark years of magic. Keep in mind the second battle going on during this one... Voldemort is trying to get at Harry. Dumbledore is not fighting for his life, but both his own and Harry's. Had they been one-on-one without distraction and without the complication of horcruxes (which led Dumbledore not to try to kill him but to capture him), it wouldn't have been close. Dumbledore in canon, in the book, single handedly captured (not killed) Voldemort's inner circle on his way up to Voldemort. Without challenge. Then he protected Harry without difficulty. And Voldemort fled.

As for the wand in most instances where it was lost the was some interference Antioch was killed in his sleep with a knife, Dumbledore allowed himself to be disarmed, draco had his wand physically taken from him and lost it apparently, but if you use it it's supposed to win, so yes if your scenario happened I believe he would win. Though I'd imagine hagrid would use his brute strength even still and I wouldn't count him out.

Dumbledore knew he could not kill Riddle, becasue of the prophecy. He was not even trying. They even talk about it during the duel, when Riddle asked why he was not trying to kill. Dumbledore knew he could have easily killed Riddle. This is evidenced by Rowling, going out of the way, to show Harry reacting to overwhelming power of the spell Dumbledore used. This was the biggest clue in the entire duel, even without trying to kill, Dumbledore cast the mosty powerfull spell of the duel. Also, the relative ease with which he dealt with all Riddles attacks. Again Rowling went out of her way to show Dumbledore as being relaxed and unconcerned, right up until Riddle tried a possession attack on Harry (the one thing he had no control over). Additionally, people forget that Dumbledore didn't just defeat Riddle and drive him off, he also defeated Bellatrix at the same time ...... the two most powerful wizards on the dark side, and he easily dealt with both at the same time....calmly as though not a care in the world. And we also know it was not purely the elder wand, since he won it from Grindelwald (people talk about how it might be won with a trick in the beats stryline, but in the book Rowling talked about people being awed at watching them duel). Dumbledore simply was not trying to win, try because he knew it would only delay riddle who would come back again (perhaps when he had less control over events). So all he did was play with Riddle and push him to retreat, to protect Harry ....... which he did easily and with style. He had all the knowledge, power and control. He knew about the prophecy, about the Horcrux's ... so he had the power and skill, but the wisdom to realize it would not lead to a lasting defeat. Dumbledore was the most powerful wizard in the Potter world, by a wide margin.

People always say Dumbledore was the most powerful wizard of all time (or something to that effect), but I always wonder about Merlin and his role/reputation in the Wizarding World.

@@HarryPotterFolklore there is nothing that even slightly suggested that he never got tired or get exhausted. And he was not immortal per se. His body could be killed, he just wouldn't "go on" since his soul was bound to earth by his horcruxes.

@@HarryPotterFolklore To explain my previous comment a little more: If Dumly actually killed him in this fight, his body would die, but his soul would be still here, bound to earth by the horcruxes and therefore it would be possible for him to be reborn again, possibly after Dumbledores death. By first destroying the horcruxes Voldys last part of soul that he had in him would "go on" because it wouldn't be bound to earh anymore. So he was only immortal by the terms, that if his body got destroyed (exactly as when the killing curse rebounded when he tried to kill Harry), his soul would still remain in the realm of the living and he could be reborn / recreated from this part of soul.

Tiny little detail, Dumbledore was never Tom’s headmaster, just his transfiguration teacher. I believe it was Armando Dippet who was headmaster of Hogwarts when Riddle was a student.

Dumbledore was Tom Riddle's professor, not his headmaster. That really bugged me.

Dumbledore was the only reason why Hogwarts was never affected directly by Voldemort. He knew Dumbledore was far more gifted, had more studies and more experience. Dumbledore even beat Grindelwald whim he had a personal relationship with which would've made that fight considerably harder. Let's not forget Voldemort only affected Britain, however Grindelwald terrorized the World. In the move they make Dumbledore too crippled in the book he was only deflecting Voldemort's curses and was not intending to kill him (he knew that would've been useless since he already knew about the Horcruxes and maybe not even try to put him in Jail as he could've gotten killed there again and comeback with an Horcrux and look for Bellatrix or Wormtail again. In the book Dumbledore said he was shaken after the fight but let's not forget age here Dumbledore is maybe 40 years longer and Yes! Voldemort's plan was to stay away from Dumbledore as far as possible, perhaps Voldemort could've won against Dumbledore but remember that Dumbledore was far wiser and that was Tom's worst attribute, he was always blinded by power, he didn't even dare chance it with Dumbledore

In the movies, and yeah this isn't the books but I imagine JK Rowling was overseeing parts of the movie's developments, they show Dumbledore have a sort of lapse in concentration when he throws harry back. It's at that point that Voldemort is able to break out of the water bubble. Watch around 2:00 mins in where Voldemort does something, looks like he pushes Harry back. Dumbledore breaks concentration for a split seconds to check on Harry and then Voldemort seizes the moment and breaks free.

His immortality is tied to his split soul and horcruxes not anything regarding his body itself or its functions. If anyone can find something canon that supports the point I'd be interested.
