This made me thinking. What if the only way to safely pass through The Veil safely to the other side is by wearing Harry's invisibility cloak, The Elder Wand is the only wand that can work on that side of The Veil and The Resurrection Stone is the key to return back to this side of The Veil. That would make the owner of the three Hallows to be the Master of Death.

Maybe the bridge on the story is actually a metaphor for the Veil, they dicovered how to go to the other side without dying, without death's permision. And from there on they recieve al of the knowledge necesary to create everything else. Almost as a gift from death it self.

Sirius's birthday being on November 3rd is so sad. Imagine him on his 22nd birthday; he's been in Azkaban two days, his best friends were just murdered three days ago, they're probably having or had a funeral which he can't even be at, his other best friend is a traitor and murderer, and he can't go see his last best friend or the child of his other two friends because he's IN AZKABAN being tortured by dementors.

Dumbledore called the room with the veil,"the death chamber". That makes one think since the veil is surrounded by seats it was used for executions. I guess the Ministry stopped that practice since being imprisoned by dementors was a punishment worse than death.

I love the mystery of the veil and dislike that movie Bellatrix used the killing curse. It doesn't make sense. Harry fully expected Sirius to jump up from the other side at any moment, calling for him in increasing desperation. If he was hit with the killing curse, the entire thing would've been very clear.
@leelasittler6290

The books rule. You are entirely correct. He was confused as to why Lupin was holding him back, and why Sirius wasn't coming. He had a speech inside his head about Sirius. Also, Luna made me feel better at the end, when she said that Sirius wasn't dead, he just couldn't return from the veil. Then there was the mirror. Maybe the veil blocked wizard-wifi, or he just didn't have it with him. Harry Potter is so intricate! I love it!!!!!!😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

I always kinda of thought that those three items had something else in common: they are barriers. The Pensieve is the barrier between past and present, the Mirror of Erised is the barrier between wishes and reality, and the Archway (the most obvious) is the barrier between the dead and the living.

I'm a little confused when did anyone ever mention that Hogwarts was older that the brothers? I always assumed it was the other way round And remember, that Godrics Hollow was named after him, after he was getting so famous, but he was BORN there, or not? So that village already existed, and was just renamed So isn't it possible and more likely, that the brothers were just buried at a village that LATER became Godrics hollow?

+SuperCarlinBrothers, they were born in the 1200's according to the movie. Although I like parts of your theory, you shouldn't overlook the fact that the movies (although fun) often include these kind of details on their own, without input from JK. I also think that the myth being called "unsubstantiated" by Rowling wouldn't mean it's not true. She often drives home the point that myths are always based on real events. Calling it unsubstantiated just adds to the mystery and causes a lot of (interesting) discussion about it. It's also worthwhile to see how the Mirror closely resembles the stone: they both show you what a lot of people want most desperately: their deceased loved ones. I rather think the object formed an inspiration to the Peverell brothers, rather than that it was their creation.

I FIGURED IT OUT!!! When Dumbledore is talking to fudge he says “you will find several escaped death eaters contained in the death chamber” the room with the veil in it. When the ministry sentences you to death, just like in fantastic beasts and where to find them, you are escorted to the room and killed. The difference is the method. In Fantastic beasts you are lowered into a pool of what I assume is drought of living death. And just like the thestrals, the voices can only be heard through the veil by someone who has witnessed death, that’s why Luna and Harry are so attracted to it because they have both seen the thestrals too. I have a whole theory on this so if you have any questions let me know
@BobaFett396
@BobaFett396 6 жыл бұрын
Lpl Setsfall this is the answer for sure. In OOTP, there have been many references of Harry and Luna having connections to witnessing death, while the others around cannot. In the department of Mysteries veil ‘death room’, you can clearly see the arch is placed in a centerpiece like the center of a colosseum, with seating all around it. I’m sure the ministry repurposed this ‘nasty archway’ to be a death room like in fantastic beasts... I love supercarlinbrothers, but their theory is much too stretched, and there is no way the pensieve and the veil could be connected

But I thought that the death sentence in England was the Dementor's Kiss. Even so, I find this very intresting; what is the gloo thing in the death pool of the american ministry of magic? Was it there since the beggining like the veil or is something made by wizards? How and why the substance shows you happy memories while "eats" you? Hm, many questions...

It's been a while, so if this is a silly question, forgive me. But...what if only humans can't cross the veil, in real or spirit form? And what if the Dementors themselves came from the veil? They're not human, and look kinda like dark veils themselves. Or maybe the Ministry used some magic FROM the veil to create The Dementors (and then went "Oh crap, we better not mess with this anymore, something worse might come through")? And that's why Harry always froze up around them, like the other three magic objects?

@@colterwebb6382 yes it doesn't mean that Ollivander himself is that old. It means that his family discovered the secrets of wand lore thousands years ago. Also... Aggripa... Is Cornelius Aggripa from the 15-16th century. The Muggle counterpart denounced Witch-hunt practices and denied the existence of Wizards. In the Wizarding community they believe he has been imprisoned by Muggles for his writings. I don't know which real inconsistencies you are mentioning :) But otherwise, if I could request a full book from JK Rowling, it would have unequivocally be the Biography and adventures of Nicolas Flamel as he has been alive for almost 7 centuries. He has seen or heard about every single Triwizard tournament. He has been to Beauxbatons. He has discovered the secrets of alchemy, has fought evil most of his later life and belonged to the original Order of the Phoenix! You know what I realized that is kind of cool. Jk Rowling could say literally anything, anything, in an interview about the Harry Potter world and it would automatically become true. Like while she was getting ready for an interview she could literally just say to herself "today I am going to tell everyone that Harry has a secret long lost sibling." And from that moment on, despite anything conflicting with it, it would automatically be fact. Because she created that world that so many have come to love, herself. It's an amazing power and I really respect her.

+Kanna Vz. Kind of a pun and a conundrum. "Authors careful with their words." I don't know, someone who like Tolkien creates this dense of a world - can pretty much say anything. And it becomes truth. And the readers just have to make it work, realize there are probably many more things about the Author's world we don't know.. and be glad that if the Author is still alive they can still impact it's truth/reality. Cause that ability to have possible more unknowns, more story, dies with the Author - fanfiction or no IMHO

I'm glad you got the pun :D, and yes they can, it's their story, but if there's a huge revelation (a plot relevant one) it can't be said by "wog", because it can be seen as an "ass pull" and the same author can be scrutinized for failing at storytelling, Imho if I were JKR and somehow give a press round saying "yeah, HP has a long lost brother" the fans and critics would destroy my social media; and ain't nobody got time for that :D

Wow, I'm loving this theory! Specifically the part about the connection between the veil and the stone. (The pensieve-cloak/mirror-wand parts are a bit more shaky) Re the thestrals - I think you have it a bit backwards. Mastering them is not mastering death. Dumbledore makes it clear that mastering the FEAR of death is what makes you master death. The thestrals are creatures of the link between life and death, but are actually harmless. The use of their tail hairs would surely give the wand an other-worldly quality, but not actually master death alone, as we see clearly in the story. Now, I'd like to add something to the theory: The veil is clearly a portal to the world of the dead, one you can hear into once you've yourself established that connection within yourself (another symtom of which is seeing the thestrals). What if we assume that the portal existed before? There are actual legends of portals to Heaven and Hell in the living world, located in specific and known places. What if it was Cadmus (or all the brothers) who had *discovered* it and decided to mark it by the use of the veil so that one would not just get "sucked in"? It would make all the sense in the world to build the Department of Mysteries around it, and then all the other departments over, to hide it, once the location had been clearly marked. Now here's the biggie: What if that was what actually PROMPTED the 3 brothers to create the hallows in the first place? Perhaps it made them understand the connection between life and death, and made them use their own abilities to fight death? To Antioch's understanding, he would distance himself from death by becoming invincible, so he created an all powerful wand. To Cadmus, the way to defeat death would be by allowing people to return, so he created the stone as a return pathway through the veil (I'd assume he was most intrigued by the veil, and the others didn't set much to store by that particular point. Perhaps it was his pride - he challenged Death at its own doorway). Ignotus, however, understood the power of life and death were beyond his control (a very religious concept) and so he distanced himself from death by HIDING from danger until such time as he felt that he was no longer afraid. This works with the lyrical theme of the Tale of the Three Brothers as their respective qualities are outlined. Please look into this idea, I think this could make a great followup video!!

I have a theory. After watching Fantastic Beasts (SPOILER ALERT!!!!) We know that when Newt and Tina were death sentenced they were going to be drowned in a weird pool thing, which looks oddly like the veil. We find out that when someone touches the pool they die. What if the veil was used for death sentences like in Fantastic Beasts? It would kinda be like an execution room. So I think when Bella hit Sirius with the curse he died not because she used "Avada Kedavra" but because he fell into the veil, which kills people.

My mum passed away a couple of years ago. I was devastated and of course I still miss her a lot. Whenever I’ve thought of her as being dead, particularly in the months after her death, The Veil has always come to mind. It’s just that feeling that she’s right there, just out of reach, and there should be some way of getting in touch with her. I suppose the fact that I live in the house that we shared and that I see objects belonging to her and photos of her every day makes that connection particularly strong. Also, the graveyard where my mum is buried is less than a mile from where I live. At the same time I’d sort of know, logically, that there’s no way I can reach her now. Although I was raised Catholic, I’m not at all religious now and I don’t really believe that there is an afterlife, although I’m not so sure about that now. I guess the idea of her being in Heaven or some form of afterlife doesn’t give me any comfort because it’s more the day to day things that I miss about my mother. I’d be interested to know if anyone else who has lost someone can relate to this.

What is the point of reducing your mother's fate to how it affects you. I know you don't see it like that but it's unbelievably selfish. Think of it as "Why do I care if I donate to an orphan in Africa. Yeah they're well fed and happy but I don't see it so it doesn't benefit me". You're going to die one day too. Death is guaranteed, but heaven isn't. If anything, you should be more hopeful you will reunite with her one day

I actually don't think so. Because I don't think, that his was an accident. I think he committed suicide and was fully aware of that, which doesn't mean didn't go through the veil. And that would be a way more wizardy way to commit suicide than hanging yourself. But I think it might be possible, that he found out that the veil, his own creation, was only a one way ticket to the realm of the daed by sending his love through it and therefore unknowingly sending her into her death. Of course I as the creator would rather take the risk myself than sending my love through it and risking losing her. And yet I as his love would want the exact same thing only the other way around for the exact same reason. So I would try to convince him to let me go through it instead of going himself. I might argue, that he who created the veil knows it far beeter than me (his love), so that in case that something would go wrong he would more likely be able to help me than the other way round. She might even threatened to kill herself in case he died during the experiment. And he blinded by his confidence boosted by her trust might be convinced by that. And he might anyway refuse to believe, that the veil, probably his whole life's work, is nothing more than a wizardy way to commit suicide (or a way to murder someone without leaving a body that cannot be detected by priori incantatem, because you only have to push your victim through it.) And after he realized what he had done he desperately tried, driven by his guilt and the loss of his love, to create a way to bring back the dead, (which I think wasn't his original idea for the veil. I think he might have only wanted to create some tool to explore and learn something about the realm of the daed or to communicate with or visit the dead.) And after successfully creating the stone he felt a natural high unlike anything he felt before. After years and years of work he finally had brought back his love, undid his guilt. He could be with her forever. But then, when he realized that she wasn't happy, that she was cold and seamed not to belong in this world, that he could not bring back the dead, that all these years and years of work to save her had been absolutely pointless, that his arrogance and foolishness had unchangeably killed his love, that HE had killed her and nothing in this world could change that, he fell in the deepest depression he had ever felt before. He lost the last spark of hope he had and decided to do the only he now believed could truly reunite them. He followed her through the veil.

Interesting theory! My thought was that his love died before he created the veil and that would be the reason why he's so obsessed with bringing back the dead. He created the veil as a portal to give her a way to come back, but she never did, and perhaps he could hear her whisper on the other side, leading him to the conclusion that even though she was there, she couldn't cross the veil, meaning it was a one-way through. He desperately tried to find another way (the stone and maybe others?) but never succeeded and in the end, decided to join her and cross the veil. Also, according to another theory on this channel, the stone would only try to bring you to your own death, so if he summoned her that way, maybe she convinced him to join her in death.

This is my second favorite theory I've heard from you guys. The first being that jacob is a decendant of Helga Hufflepuff. As a Hufflepuff myself I have to admit I am a bit biased though. That being said, I had a few ideas to consider. Like what if the veil was the predecessor of the invisibility cloak(since passing through it, whether it kills you or not, makes your body disappear) the pensieve was the predecessor of the ressurection stone(because the pensieve allows you to see people you've lost but never interact with them but with the resurrection stone you could interact with them again) and that maybe the mirror of erised showed them how to make the hollows? We don't know the full extent of the power of the mirror so maybe if your heart's true desire is to know how to do or make something then maybe it can teach you?

It's not demiguise because in Deathly Hallows we find out that there are other invisibility cloaks out there, that are indeed made from demiguise hair. But they tend to wear out and stop working a lot of the time, they also are not protected against revealing charms the way Harry's (Ignotuses) is. So it very well could be thestral hair. BUT it leaves a sort of plot hole, if people who have seen death can see thestrals, why can't those same people see through the cloak?

Wouldn't that only make you invisible to some people? The people that have seen death would see a person walking around with a black cloth covering them (that gives me an amusing image in my mind of Harry walking around thinking he is invisible when he isn't). Also, since Herry has seen death how would he be able to see through it? Maybe thestrals were the inspiration and that by studying them Ignotus was able to figure out how to make things invisible to all people. I can see him using the thestral hair as the origin of the cloak and doing some additional magic to make the invisibility apply to all people. There is also the possibility that it changes properties when removed from the animal.

It should not work on a technicality. What the series fails to explain is that in order to kill a horcrux, you need to meet two requirements. It needs to be a simultaneous physical and magical destruction. The magical element of said method must be destructive enough like cursed fire & basilisk venom to kill the Horcrux part, and the physical side of the method must be destructive to the physical body. Harry had to stab the sword into the locket and pierce it despite the fact that it was already impregnated with venom. If the sword's flat side was caressed or slightly tapped onto the locket's face, it still wouldn't die. Assuming that the veil claims the soul, throwing a diadem through an archway wouldn't actually destroy it right? Sirius body floated out of view when he entered the veil so I don't think the physical body would perish hence not meeting the physical requirement. I would assume that the horcrux will just exist on the unknown side of the veil.

Thestrels aren't just related... They are theorized to be what Deathly hallows are birthed from: The Thestrel IS seemingly DEATH in the story. The Elder Wand is fueled by the hair of the Thestrel. Fueled by death and powerful. It is also the only wand of it's kind. The Resurrection Stone is created from the Thestrel's Heart. Born from death yet bringing life. That implies that it’s not a democracy, so who chooses the Minister and how?”

When I read the books, I imagined that it worked like a shadow government, using the 'muggle' government as a template to work from. I imagined there being some kind of magic parliament, with the majority bloc of said parliament appointing members of the executive branch from its ranks- including, I imagined, the MM. That's basically how it works in the 'muggle' or real world UK gov't, and would explain the whole 'appointing' business.

Omer Farooq I think it's fascist because think about it. The Ministry of Magic technically controls the muggle world too because they ERASE the memories of muggles who have "no right to see magic" like we're some objects and the muggle government has no say in it! They even have laws regarding muggles and basically the muggle government is a puppet for the Ministry of Magic since the Minister of Magic sometimes speaks to the Prime Minister and sometimes plants his own kind within the muggle government. I'm surprised that the Prime Minister, muggle-borns, and muggles related to wizards aren't disturbed by the fact that the MoM ERASES THE MEMORIES OF THEIR OWN KIND! They might say that they care about muggles but if they really did then they wouldn't erase their memories and because WHAT RIGHT DO THEY HAVE and there would be no need to segregate themselves from muggles and keep themselves a secret if they can't help that a muggle sees magic once a year! And then there's Cornelius who only cares about power and takes away freedom of speech and creates lies about Harry and Dumbledore so he can have more power and is personally controlling the school and doesn't care if Umbridge tortures kids as long as no one knows he can get away with it and didn't give Harry or anyone he's put to trial veritserum to prove their innocence or guilt. THEY DON'T NEED EVIDENCE OR WITTINESSES IF THEY HAVE A POTION THAT CAN FORCE PEOPLE TO TELL THE TRUTH! Which means he wants the people he hates in Azkaban even though they're innocent and the people he likes or can give him more power with him even though they're guilty. I'm surprised he didn't order someone to obliviate Harry's memory so he wouldn't remember what happened in the graveyard or try to put an imperious curse on him even though Harry is pretty much immune to the imperious curse but they would try right? #theministryofmagicisfascist 😧

Yes, I thought the same thing, and then I read this comment and realized someone else thought it before I did. :P And what actually gets me curious, is the fact that the ministry of magic has a room for prophecies right above the veil. Why is there a door leading to the veil? And why does the door lead all the way down, instead of opening up to a normal floor, or steps or something like that? I guess the ministry of magic uses the prophecies to figure out what some of the biggest criminal wizards and witches are gonna do, and maybe use those prophecies to track down the criminals. Once the criminals are caught, if they are dangerous, maybe they are just thrown right down that door, from where they land right beside the veil, die due to falling from such a great height, and their soul gets trapped in there. So, this brings up another question. Is the ministry of magic using the veil as a prison for criminal's souls? Is their plan to trap the criminal's souls for eternity? And since everyone knew about the deathly hallows, was the ministry ever planning on obtaining the resurrection stone to come in contact with the souls they had trapped in the veil in order to obtain more information? I don't know, it's possibly that the system of veil came up in order to prevent loss of intel in case a criminal spends his/her life in jail (one of them being Azkaban), and die. This is actually a really dark to be honest.

I wonder if maybe they didn't create the 'pre-deathly hallows' but instead found them and were inspired. (This is assuming they went to Hogwarts) Antioch could have seen the mirror while at Hogwarts and, like many others, became obsessed with getting what he saw in the mirror. Cadmus could have stumbled upon the veil by accident and decided to try and find a way to allow him to bring someone from the other side of the veil back. And Ignotus could have seen the pensieve while at Hogwarts and, like you said, became inspired to make someone invisible in the present.

We know that Rowling loves threes and English mythology, so I think not only are the Deathly Hallows related to the Pensieve, the Veil, and the Mirror, but they're also related to Arthurian legend. The Mirror/Elder Wand represents Caliburn, Arthur's enchanted sword which can be wielded only by the one who is most worthy -- and which was returned to the Lady of the Lake, who lives below what amounts to a giant mirror. The Pensieve/Cloak represents the Holy Grail, with its protective power and literally resembling a goblet filled with enchanted liquid. And the Veil/Resurrection Stone represents the Siege Perilous, the seat at Camelot's round table reserved solely for the blemishless knight who would one day retrieve the Holy Grail, and which will bring death to anyone else who sits in it.
@SpasticMinnow
@SpasticMinnow 6 жыл бұрын
Neat but tortured comparisons. I'm pretty sure the sword of Gryffendor would be the better comparison to Excalibur. And really, looking for Arthurian legend for inspiration seems a little suspect since the series of Merlin related profanities would suggest Authur might be part of Magical history for them, not just legend.
@NoJusticeNoPeace
@NoJusticeNoPeace 6 жыл бұрын
From a Jungian perspective, "King Arthur" is an archetypal figure which may have applied to several different historic periods and rulers ranging from the Bronze Age to the Medieval Period. This means that within the Harry Potter narrative the real Arthur/Merlin might be quite separate from the legend. It likewise means Rowling may be making the connections unconsciously, adapting the Arthurian narrative into her own.
@naloriel9
@naloriel9 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think the deathly hallows (at least not all of them) are based on the arthurian legend's part, but there is definitely connections between harry potter and these legends. Like the way harry finds the sword in the sorting hat because he is a true gryffindor is a perfect mirror to the way Arthur is the only one to be able to take the Excalibur out of the rock because he's the only one worthy of it, although both of them are kids not expected to be heroes at the time. But your comparison of the veil and the stone with the siege perilous is a really good interpretation, I never thought about that but it's truly possible! And don't forget that Arthur is lead by the lady of the lake, and he's the only one that can see her. Like Harry is the only one who was able to see Sirius, Remus and his parents that lead him until the end. Although I'm wondering this: in the legend, Arthur is not the one finding the holy grail, but he's the one launching the quest. He accompanied by Merlin like Harry is accompanied by Dumbledore, and the one that finds the Grail, Percival, is a knight that Arthur helped by keeping him in his circle of "knights of the round table"... can this apply to someone like Neville who was trained in the DA by Harry, and who is the one that destroyed the last horcruxe by killing Nagini, making victory possible? Or can this apply to another member of the DA?

@@NoJusticeNoPeace In that case maybe she is using the legend of Sigurd/Siegfried of the Volsung Saga or Nibelungenlied which has even more similarities. Odin (whom one of his realms is death) plunges the sword Balmung/Gram/Nothung into a tree, proclaiming that whoever receives it will find no sword better. Sigurd pulls the stone from the tree... Later on he slays the dragon Fafnir, bathing in the blood and himself becoming invulnerable (bar a small spot where a leaf was stuck to his body). Of course he also has a special cloak that renders him invisible. Siegfried also is later then murdered in a dishonorable method and his sword is stolen. Don't have a specific spot for the resurrection stone to this... Also Siegfried died before his wife (and it was she who eventually avenged his death), but still... Volsung Saga and the Arthurian Legends have a large amount of crossover/similarities to them. PS to the original person. Caliburn/Excalibur/Caledfwlch/Caliburnus was gifted to Arthur by the Lady in the Lake after the sword he pulled from the stone was broken while fighting King Pellinore.

JKR: It's the divide between life and death. I tried to do a nod to that in the Tale of Three Brothers - she was separate from them as though through a veil. You can't go back if you pass through that veil, you cannot come back. Or you can't come back in any form that will make either person happy anyway. But when they surround that veil [in Order of the Phoenix], I was trying to show that depending on their degree of skepticism or belief about what lay beyond - because Luna, of course, is a very spiritual character. Luna believes firmly in an afterlife. She's very clear on that. And she feels them speaking or hears them speaking much more clearly than Harry does. This is the idea of faith. Harry thinks he can hear them; he's drawn on. But Harry's had a life that has been so imbued with death that he now has an uncharacteristically strong curiosity about the afterlife, especially for a boy of 15, as he is in Phoenix. Ron's just scared, as I think Ron would be - he just knows this is something he doesn't want to dabble with. Hermione, hyper-rational Hermione - 'can't hear anything, get away from the Veil.' So if you walk through the veil, you're dead.You're dead. What you find on the other side, well, that's the question.
@carmenuljanicka6447

Lucas Freitas your theory is cool, but there is a flaw. no matter how rational hermione is, in the Harry Potter books its very clear that the after life exists. Ghosts. Harry's parents appearing in important moments. So faith cant be the reason, cause everyone in the Magical World knows that the afterlife exists
@craigmclennan6284
@craigmclennan6284 7 жыл бұрын
carmen uljanicka however as Nick says in OOTP only those who are scared of death will become ghosts. I believe that only those who well and truly cannot comprehend the idea of dying and no longer existing can become ghosts; those in the Order of the Pheonix "know the risks" (as Molly says in OOTP) which means they understand the possibility of dying and no longer existing; they had already come to terms with death and accepted it would inevitably happen at some point. Harry's parents, Sirius, Severus, Lupin, Tonks, Mad-Eye, Fred and many more were in the Order, so this holds true. The idea of the afterlife is more of the experience Harry faces in The Deathly Hallows when he meets Dumbledore in "Kings Cross Station". We know it's not the station, but perhaps the afterlife is only the misconception of living beyond death and merely a persons brain being alive, rather than a whole and synonymous body, like Nick, The Baron, Helena, etc.

When I first read deathly hallows and I heard the description for the spirits conjured by the resurrection stone, My first thought was the veil was related to the stone not as a precursor but as a complimentary piece. It can only be entered from this side but what happens if the dead are already here? The dead can't die. So would a spirit conjured by the stone be able to walk through the veil and pass through on the other(physical) side and thus no longer be separated by the veil(dead). After all if the veil is a physical representation of the border between the world's What happens if a spirit were to walk through it. We know that the stone keeps them here(even against their own will) until the summoner dies so the veil can't keep them. So if a spirit crosses the physical barrier and come through the veil completely does the veil no longer cover them?

There's also the descriptions of the contents of the pensieve and the makeup of the invisibility cloak. Both are described as being silvery and liquid like. The pensieve gave off a silvery light and had a liquid/gas consistency: "like light made liquid, or wind made solid." The cloak was a silvery fluid like material that: "felt strange to the touch; like water woven into material." It's definitely conceivable that by studying the pensieve and the thestrals Ignotus created the perfect invisibility cloak.

Ok, this is just spit-balling, but maybe the timeline and the creation of the Pensieve are not entirely unrelated. Maybe the true power of the Pensieve was not to just look into the past. What if Ignacious wanted to... change the past. (Pause for dramatic effect) So being invisible is an amazing ability, but in comparison to the lofty goals of the other two brothers, it seems a bit shallow. The elder wand was created to conquer reality. The Sorcerer's Stone was created to conquer death. What if the invisibility cloak was created to conquer time. So here is how my theory holds water. The invisibility makes people in the present unable to see you, the Pensieve makes people in the past unable to see you. If you wear the invisibility cloak inside the past, would a double negative effect work to allow a person to react with the past an effectively travel through time? Ignacious could have been born in Godric's Hallow, travel through time to the past using the Pensieve but in doing so take the Pensieve with him. He would have known where Hogwarts was to have been built so he would move the Pensieve there and await the coming of the legendary founders. Perhaps that was his goal, to meet the founders themselves. But as he doesn't appear in the legend of the founding of Hogwarts, maybe he went too far. As the Pensieve doesn't allow one to travel forward in time he would have nothing to do but wait but maybe he couldn't wait long enough before he died, leaving the Pensieve behind to later be found. This would also explain how he hid from death. In his original timeline, Ignacious would have disappeared completely, effectively cheating death. Any who knew that he had the cloak would think he was just hiding in plain sight, when in reality he was hiding in time. Boom. Mic drop.

Maybe he made a version of the Pensieve where you could change the past and went into the past. Then Ignacious could have realized, being the clever man that he is, that this was too powerful of an object. Still wanting to have something that you could use to travel into the past, he made the actual Pensieve, but in the past. Then he went back to his present and destroyed the first Pensieve upon finding the actual one? Or yea maybe the Pensieve can change the past too, idk...

That would mean Luna could see them and Snape and Quirell should've when they were arguing and potter got close. I think that the way they "see" death is more emotionally attached. I could look it up but I dont want to lol, but I dont think just because youve murdered someone or have seen just any death will suffice. I believe its supposed to be the act of "knowing" death by having lost someone you truly cared about, Harry saw Cedirc? and i guess he kinda cared lol and Luna saw her mom. Voldemort didnt care about anyone he killed and Snape only cared about Lilly and he didnt see her die.

This is so good and it can apply such a fitting theory: Master of Death; going to the other side through the veil, surviving that and stick around there with the protection of the invisibility cloak, getting done what you desire with the elder wand, and having a return-savely-ticket with the resurrection stone. Back in the real world you are the only one conquered Death and being called Master of Death because you have some things to say. Isn't this like so good?

Isn't the Pensieve introduced as "a pensieve" rather than "The Pensieve" - implying it is not a unique item? All five other relics are clearly individual, specific items even if lesser versions can be made. Other wands of elder wood had been made, they just weren't very good. Other invisibility cloaks had been made, they just weren't as good. The Veil, the Mirror, and the Stone are all completely unique, with no lesser versions of them discussed. Or perhaps The Pensieve is just a superior version of other pensieves? The only people we see use the memory extraction spell are those associated with Hogwarts (Dumbledore, Snape, Slughorn), so we don't really know how widespread knowledge of the technique really is.

I can't recall exactly where, I think it was pottermore, but I remember reading that there are other pensieves that belong to wizards and they are very personal items. So much so that they are usually buried with them, but The Pensieve is one that is communally owned by Hogwarts, but no one used it as much as Dumbledore. So it might just be a superior version of the ordinary one, but it's definitely not the only pensieve around, even if it is special

I loved this, but I feel like there is one weak point, which is simply how you chose to link the Elder Wand with the Mirror of Erised. I feel like there would be better ways to go about connecting the two than what you did. For example, the Mirror of Erised helped its creator realize his heart's desire, and seeing what is most worth fighting for inspired him to build the Elder Wand, not to simply summon it, but to help him fight for it. On that vein, why would the elder wand accept the creator as its master in the first place? We see no evidence of Olivander or other wandmakers being able to use every wand in their shops, so why should the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand ever created, accept its creator automatically?

For your last question, maybe it's as simple as: He is the one that claimed it. The only reason the people who buy the wands from the wand makers "own" their wands is because their maker gave them to their new owner, but they can be taken from that owner (with the person taking the wand claiming it) and will then work for that person. Their seems to be no reason why Olivander COULDN'T use every wand in his shop, or at least a wand he created himself, because in a sense, they only start to belong to other Wizards when he allows them to claim them.

Doesn't it make more sense if the Resurrection Stone was built first and Cadmus grew frustrated with the incomplete passage of his wife via the stone? Then, when he created the Veil portal, he went through it before realizing that he hadn't created a stable way back and the world interpreted that as his "suicide"? Pensieve/Invisibility Cloak is cool though. And then the Mirror and the Wand lovely...but again, I wonder if it makes more sense in the other direction. The Mirror could have corrupted the other two brothers...or even been the real way in which they "met Death" as described in the story. Dumbledore goes on and on about the amount of people who have died because of the Mirror and "wasted away in front of it" but instead the Three Brothers use it as inspiration and "build a bridge" between themselves and the images they see in the Mirror. Death's Trick is that their inventions were imperfect at replicating the Mirror and led to their demise in any case, just in more spectacular form than its usual victims. In some ways, this even makes Harry an arguable victim of the Mirror, as he dies in a fair approximation of the image he saw within it -- surrounded by his vanished family members. He implies it's the only way he would have the strength. Thus finally justifying why the third book needed those items to make up the Deathly Hallows. Harry's full possession of all three at the time, his mastery of them, allowed him to reverse the tricks played on the Peverells -- to use the rules of the Elder Wand to short-circuit the killing curse fired at him by Voldemort and to use some combination of the Invisibility Cloak hiding him and the Resurrection Stone's power to provide him with a guide to explain the rules of Death Antechamber in order to return properly to the land of the living. The Mirror was part of Harry's first death, but the united tricks of the Peverell brothers allow him and them to finally defeat the Mirror of Death. Going off on my own theory, if we accept that the Mirror is not neutral but actively hostile, I like the idea of the "men who wasted away in front of it" as the origin of Dementors who continue to suck that same life out of others...perhaps in the hopes of acquiring new dreams or being able to see it again at least one last time. Which means Harry, a victim of the Mirror who only narrowly survived becoming such a wasted figure, would naturally instinctively fear Dementors over everything else, even the man who killed his parents and tried repeatedly to kill him, by unconsciously recognizing him as his near fate. And when is the only time that someone looking in the Mirror survives just fine? Harry with the Philosopher's Stone, bestowing immortality. Where better to hide it than in the true portal to death? Incidentally: If Ariana made Dumbledore's socks before she died, Dumbledore's answer to what he saw in the mirror could be some version of the truth. Especially with the symbolism that socks later take on starting in the second book. And it would certainly be both Dumbeldore's chief association with Death, as incarnated in the Mirror, and what leads to his eventual death via the curse on the Gaunt Ring/Resurrection Stone since his desire to see Ariana again is EXACTLY what gets him killed. The Mirror always has its revenge.
@KWolf2013

Katy Mulvaney WOW I am impressed. But I think the sock thing is a bit far. I think Dumbledore was just lying. Some things are too personal and painful to share with the eleven year old boy you're raising for slaughter. I do really like the idea of the mirror as actively hostile, though. So do you think that Death created the mirror and the brothers made the hallows in response? Or one of them made the mirror as well, without realizing what a mistake it would be?

Ok my bad.. When I said "it's always been there" I meant it's been there before recorded history since nobody knows where it came from. I agree it must have been made by a wizard. And Dumbledore calling it the Death Chamber COULD just mean it's where the unspeakables study death, but I think in 99% of cases a Death Chamber would only be called a death chamber if it's a room that's used (or in this case: has been used) to execute criminals. It ALSO matches with the Death Chamber in "Fantastic Beasts" (which is true Harry Potter content since Rowling did the screen writing). There we have an execution chamber that works basically the same way. The happy thoughts of the victim are put into the .. let's call it "Death Pool", where it then charms the victim into wanting to die. OR: maybe it's the natural allurance of death (like the veil), the promis of piece and quiet, no sorrows, eternal sleep. - Second seems more fitting to me. - Yes we see the pool-"water" act like acid on matter, but I'm 99% sure they wouldn't charm you into wanting to die only to burn you alive in acid ^^ No I'm sure the pool acts as a portal to the world of the dead, just like the veil. Maybe it's inspired by it. Probably I'd say even. I go as far as to say it might be the same thing, different design and (long stretch now) maybe even by the same maker. But the last one might be a bit much I have to admit. So the wizarding world is more merciful than the muggles when it comes to execution: let the natural fascination and secret desire for death work for them so that the victim accepts death and even dies practically of "free will". That fits *very* well when we take the Veil into account. I think Death Chamber means Execution Chamber and I'm 90% sure of it... Having the basically same device twice, one of which is definitely used as an instrument to execute people. I think it's pretty clear.
