The name Volvo has been synonymous with car safety for decades. The brand has often been the first to introduce key safety features that are now common across the car industry. Safety, though, has become a bigger priority for consumers and automakers alike, and that's causing trouble for Volvo. Automotive technology has improved, regulations have tightened, and other brands are catching up. That's making it harder and harder for Volvo to keep its lead in car safety.
For instance, the Volvo XC40 comes with safety features like automatic emergency breaking, oncoming lane collision mitigation, lane keeping aid, and driver fatigue monitoring. Add-ons include a pilot assist semi-autonomous driving system, 360-degree parking camera, and blind-spot monitoring. Many other luxury subcompact SUVs like the Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X1 come with similar standard safety features.

"Losing its big lead" - it meant that Volvo's safety game is slowing as other car manufacturers are catching up. Losing the lead in safety does not equate to losing the safety game. It's just that the gap is smaller now. So, the title is not misleading.

Volvo is really still the leader. They have shared so much information to others in their research in safety, like how Tesla pioneered the EV market, Volvo pioneered the Safety market. Their safety is amazing, and I am lucky to be able to experience it. Others are catching up, but really, Volvo is still leading it. True Story : My Neighbors Volvo XC90 saved his life. He was on the Highway and suddenly someone drove in the back of his car. Volvos Auto-Brake system prevented his Car to be pushed into the Truck in front of him. Without the System he wouldve been crushed between the other car and the Truck.

Owning a 2019 XC90 and XC60 I can say these cars are just magnificent. Unless you live in the US, in 2020 nobody cares about how many cylinders your SUV has. Other factors such as fuel-economy and environmental friendliness have a way higher priority in developed countries.

Hell their safety is why my dads alive. Crashed in his 240 back in 91 and ended up paralyzed from the chest and downwards. Few months to a year later he bought an all new 850 glt sedan and around 2003 he replaced it with the 850 R wagon that he owns to this day. Why the negative title? The title of the video says “Why Volvo is Losing Its Big Lead in Safety”, but there is no proof other than the others will catch-up... so the conclusion is that they aren’t losing anything, to the contrary, they are growing... In terms of safety you said it yourself, the brand is rated top by consumers, they have zero negative press about safety or anything else (unlike the Germans who are busy with cleaning up after their diesel-gate). The same argument that the others will catch-up can be made for any type of technology in any business. Other car brands can catch up to Tesla in electric, it doesn’t mean that they will do it anytime soon... and the by the time they are doing it Tesla is doing something else. Same for Volvo and safety.

David Moore They are in the top safety pick and top safety pick plus. And now with euro ncap, the active safety is part of the overall safety rating. If a car scores badly on that, it brings the whole score down. Effectively a car could actually crash the best and guaranteed to save your life but it'll get a bad rating if it doesn't have auto brakes.

The title is a bit misleading, it is not that Volvos have become any less safe than they ever were, it is that they’ve purposefully allowed/encouraged everyone else to catch up to them. Also geeley has to be probably one of the only Chinese companies that I could actually say I’m proud of or even really like at all. I love their hands off approach with Volvo and the fact that they are just supporting them from the background, it is working out very very well.

Can we stop with the "model 3 safest car" BS. It is a common misconception that the Tesla model 3 is not the safest car. Volvo beat it on adult occupant protection in Euro NCAP's tests. The model 3 didn't perform particular well I'm the small overlap crash test with footwell intrusion. Volvos aslo have stronger roofs. The NHSTA don't even perform an offset test, their crash tests are basic. Please do your research.

Volvo and Tesla have the same score in Adult protection 96%. Best test score for Adult protecion in Euro ncap belongs to Mazda CX-30 with 99%. Best score for kids or pedestrian belongs to Mercedes CLA or A-class. Chrash avoidance systems still belongs to Tesla model 3 94%.

I disagree, crumple zone is the biggest contributor to safety and without a large engine in the front it has much more of it. It's physics. They also have better polar moment of inertia to spin away from objects. Lower center of gravity to reduce rolling and thus have better handling, perhaps not the best in the industry but adding all of these factors reduce the risk of injury even more and reduce the risk of first getting into a crash. That last point is amplified by autopilot, with all the sensors and these features being present in all models the overall safety factor is higher.

The Volvo XC60 does better in electronic stability control than the Model X. Great video. I owned a 1980 245 DL wagon from 1985-1998, when it was totaled in an accident. Car kept my 7 mo pregnant wife safe and protected our baby to be. I bought my 2015.5 S60 sedan late 2016, and it’s already saved me from serious injury in a hit and run in 9/2018. Still have the car and love it. They are very underrated luxury cars, due to the popularity of the German luxury cars and Japanese luxury cars.

AirCat Aviation : Many years ago, my wife and I survived a multiple collision smashup on the freeway in Michigan driving a Volvo 145 wagon. Lost the front, tailgate and passenger door. Glass was everywhere. Got bloodied cut fingers from digging glass out of the seatbelt mechanism. But we walked away. Fixed the car and drove it for 8 more years, and then traded it in on a new Volvo 240. Needless to say, I was sold on Volvo and excellent engineering.

I have owned 6 Volvo's over the past 15 years. my newest being a 2017 S60. But when trying to purchase a new V60 in 2019, I discovered my beloved brand has actually out-priced themselves from my budget. So the same loyal owners who have sworn by Volvo over the years are no longer able to afford to buy a Volvo since the Chinese purchased the Swedish company. Volvo now seeks out the Gadget and Technology minded Millennial who knows nothing of their history, or what a great value for money and safety they have been over the last 40 years. I ended up with a new Porsche Macan. It was indeed Less money, and everything I wanted and was seeking in my V60. so for all of you wanting your old affordable Volvo with its safety options. Look at Porsche. You won't be disappointed.

Same thing happened to me -- we've owned Volvo wagons constantly since 1985, and I looked at and test-drove the new-gen Volvo Cross Country wagons extensively (2018 and 2019 V90 CC; 2020 V60 CC) before buying a 2019 Macan. I'd have preferred something more like the Cross Country wagons in terms of interior space, visibility, etc., but my Macan was in the same price range and it has lots of buttons still for climate controls and a much-superior infotainment screen, plus you can permanently disable things in the Macan like auto-start/stop and doors-locking-when-car-starts-to-move but you can't in the Volvos. My 2001 V70XC wagon is superior in many ways to the new Volvo wagons, and it's a keeper; I fear that Volvo has possibly lost us as customers for buying their new vehicles, which I feel are designed too much for women now and not for men (my 2001 Volvo has zero inside or exterior chrome trim, for example), with the new crystal gear shifters (not present on the Cross Country wagons) and weird on/off "turn switches" and silly drive-mode rollers all being turn-offs to me -- horrible design.

I am sorry, but I want to Drive my cars, not be driven or vibrated at when I don't use a turn signal. The Macan has been a blessing in disguise. I love this car. Everything I was looking for, and None of the Autonomous invasive technology that You are forced to pay for in the Volvo that I did not want anyway. I have had zero issues with my Porsche and sadly I cant say the same thing about my newer Volvo's. I always considered myself a "Very Loyal" Volvo owner, but sadly with the direction Volvo has taken with Geeley calling the shots, My Stable of Volvo's is being thinned out by attrition as I trade them off for different brands. Just got my son a new Subaru Outback (Traded a 2013 S 60 T-5) He attends school in Flagstaff and needed and all wheel drive car he felt safe in driving the snowy roads in the mountains. Tried again to find a used V-60 CC, but they were all High mileage Fleet trade ins and wouldn't risk the issues that I knew were to follow them. Happy Turkey day, and enjoy that Porsche.

I bought a used 2015 Volvo V60 T5 AWD with only 23,500 km on it. It had just come off lease and was in immaculate condition. That is 4 years depreciation but only 1 year equivalent of use. The car came with 4 new ContiProContact All Season tires. Original price was about $45,000 Can. new versus $24,000 Can. used. Why buy new when you can get almost the same features in a low mileage used car?

The V60 CC's I found were all ridiculously High Mileage Fleet/ Rental cars that had been sold off at auction. And as we all know those cars get more abuse than an ex-wife in a trailer park. So congrats on your find. I just had to replace the Fuel Pressure sensor ( $323.00) in my 2015 V 60 T-5 with 52K on the clock. so aside from that it has been a very good running car. but keep an eye out on that. Cheers

Actually it is a trend started when Ford bought Company. The problem is Volvo can't compete in low price section of cars, because the other companies could make cheaper cars than them, the mini cars and micro cars is there money is in Europe and not very safe or reliable cars. But then there is resale market, Micro and Mini cars are horrible secondhand pricewise, Simply Volvo hold their price better, even compared to same sized cars by other brands.

2000 S40 2008 XC70 2020 XC60 . The extra money spent on purchasing a Volvo is a terrific piece of mind for family safety. My wife has the XC60 And my XC70 is still going strong...Volvo for life! Only had one accident, on the highway with 3 cars involved, my S40 took a hard rear quarter side hit and refused to spin out and lose control, it aggressively held its lane albeit with a 30 degree skidding angle. It corrected and I pulled over. Nice.

I love Volvos, ill keep that car on he rode until I weals away from it in a crash (maybe not really but its comforting). sounds good everyone has stepped up safety, thats why Volvo never filed patents on the products they invented if its open source nature would lead to greater industry safely standard; such as the seatbelt as mentioned. good watch
