Thanks to Nreal for sponsoring! Check out the Air, now for sale in the US! amzn.to/3ijvh37
With Apple Glass, or Apple Reality Pro as we might be expecting, potentially weeks ahead of being announced at WWDC 2023, the future of mixed reality and augmented reality hangs in the balance! Nreal thinks they have the answer, or the beginnings of it: the key is simplicity. Without a high cost or highly technical experimental features, the Air is designed to make the most realistic, minimal, augmented reality glasses on sale right now!

I actually think that NReal’s approach is the best right now, because: - it has the ability to provide several virtual screens - it has the ability to be used without a battery - it’s much lighter than the competition - its’ much cheaper than the competition. I don’t think the future of AR is in some insanely expensive and specialised high tech or some killer app, I think it’s about having something that actually enhances daily life in a simple way (like the virtual monitors). With something like this and a MacBook you can pretty much have a workspace on a train, or a plane, or a super tiny house, or whatever. It can actually make a difference in people’s lives, unlike the battery powered, expensive and heavy alternatives that focus on things nobody actually wants or needs.
@TheThaiLife
@TheThaiLife Жыл бұрын
I've been looking at these too. A lot of us don't care about gaming too much, but more care about what a huge extended workspace can do for us outside the office. So, these seem to accomplish that. I'm interested but have to wait to see what Apple announces.
@gokuafrica
@gokuafrica Жыл бұрын
These can't emulate a workspace unfortunately. At closer viewing distances, the screen size reduces dramatically. For example, at a typical monitor viewing distance, it comes down to only 19 inches diagonally so it is not going to replace any monitors. Its good for watching from afar as if you are seeing tv in your living room couch (That's when you get the advertised 100+ inch screen size).

Thanks for this video - I ordered a pair a couple of days ago for Steam Deck gaming, but I am really intrigued by the Nebula on Mac functionality. Couple of questions while I wait for them to arrive here in NZ: Are three monitors available on all Macs? I use an M1 MacBook Air at work and of course that only supports a single external display. What resolution are the virtual monitors? Are they all the same, or is the single monitor available in higher resolution than multiples?
@sebastianbrooks

I realize this isn't exactly what you were asking about, but there is a company called DisplayLink that can enable you to run more monitors on that macbook air
@ElNeroDiablo
@ElNeroDiablo Жыл бұрын
From what I've seen in a vid by CraftComputing on these glasses; Nreal Air uses DisplayPort-over-USB-C to be fed video data from the system and it is the Nebula program (currently for MacOS, a Windows version is in-development) on the computer that creates three virtual 1080p60 monitors in a 3x1 landscape configuration, using DisplayPort's MST function to have multiple screens hooked up over a single port to the computer. However without the Nebula program, the Nreal Air glasses generate a single large 1080p60 display when used with a SteamDeck or gaming console. Using the adapter unit (which is basically a HDMI-to-USB-C converter, switching HDMI signalling to DisplayPort signalling for the USB-C connection) as an accessory purchase lets you run HDMI devices like PlayStation, XBox and Nintendo Switch to the Nreal Air, the adapter unit can also be used with Apple's Lightning Digital AV dongle to run the Nreal Air from your iPhone.

I needed earbuds two years ago and there were the Beats Fit Pro and the Jaybirds Vista which were discounted at the time. The Jaybirds are slightly better for running but what sold me was the Apple integration with my Macs, iPhone and iPad. I had never experienced this integration but it was pretty amazing when I saw what it could do. So I'm more inclined to buy Apple stuff unless there's a clear benefit to using another brand. I use a Garmin watch because it's just better for my fitness activities. I suspect that I will just go with Apple when it comes to VR/AR. I don't see myself buying one for a few years.

Luke, thanks for doing that sponsored review. I have been looking for this solution for many years, allowing me an immersive experience without using a screen(s). In addition to travel, the applications are bountiful. As they are currently designed, you can pocket the glasses until you need them without the bulk of a laptop. The keyboard will be challenging for smaller devices, even with a top/bottom screen layout. I wear glasses for distance and near and I wonder how it works in that scenario? Right now, can the glasses be used in a home office situation, sustainably and comfortably, with a resolution that is useful for graphic design and video work? If not, how about standard business work (PPT, Email, etc.)? I'm curious if the Nreal resolution competes with iPhone resolution? Applications Think of using the Nreal glasses in a Supply Chain setting, a hospital, or any vocation that requires a lot of mobility yet more expansive (perceptual) screen real estate to work with. As they are currently designed, you can pocket the glasses until you need them without the bulk of a laptop. Voice activation/integration Refined focus and control during an iPhone video shoot (it may already do this) Closed captioning augmentation, where you need the words displayed with a different color, font, or size yet still watch the movie/video "through" transparent glasses. M

Regarding the use of prescription glasses with Nreal Air - Nreal has a partnership with a glasses company (name is escaping me, but mentioned on the Amazon page for the Nreal Air) to produce prescription lenses for the Nreal Air, you give the partner company a script when ordering, they make the lenses to script and attach them to a frame piece that mounts to the nose section of the Nreal Air. As for use cases; as long as the computer you're using has USB-C (DisplayPort signalling) video output you can plug-n-play the Nreal Air right to the system otherwise there is a HDMI Adapter unit that takes a HDMI cable from the computer or game console and converts the signals to DisplayPort signalling for the USB-C. This means you can use the Nreal Air with M1/M2 powered Macs and iPads, and SteamDeck (or other PC's with USB-C video output) directly over their USB-C ports, or with the HDMI Adaptor you can use any PC or game console with HDMI output - combining the HDMI Adaptor with an Apple Lightning Digital AV dongle even lets you use older iPhones with the Lightning connector with the Nreal Air. In terms of gaming use of the Nreal Air; Nreal has verified the use of the Air with the Nintendo Switch when docked and using the HDMI Adaptor, but not verified (at least in marketing materials) the use of the Air with the Switch in handheld mode. In either case, it's unlikely the Nreal Air would work with a Switch Lite due to Nintendo's designing of the Switch Lite to not output AV signals over the USB-C port.

Not quite the same but I reserved an Aptera vehicle and its going to stand out over any other transport on the road and I'm going to have to be okay with the attention. But the service it theoretically will deliver to me will be worth it. That may be true for Nreal's Air glasses. Time will tell. Apple hopefully will figure out their software limitations because that's always where they need desperate growth. Its time to infuse new perspectives in Apple some of their old ways aren't working in 2023. New usable and efficient software for iPads would be great!

What benefit will what is being called "Apple Glass" really have? Didn't Google try this and fail? Won't this be a huge privacy issue? Maybe I'm old fashioned but I'm just not excited about this. Ultimately, I see AR as allowing information to be displayed about what/who you're looking at, unobtrusively. Ever see someone that you haven't seen for years, but forget their name, or where you know them from? Imagine if, right alongside them, there was a little info panel with that information. Or let's say you're visiting a foreign country, and there's a sign in a language you can't read. Instead of pulling out your phone and pointing Google Translate at it, you'd just *look at it* and you'd get that automatically. Obviously this won't all come at once, and the UI will take some time to converge, but eventually I see this sort of thing being ubiquitous.
