This is a short little story about a lion, a plane, and a movie studio...

Gee whiz, what a story! The 20s was such a strange, magical era where things like this could happen... I'm glad that, with the gulf of time that exists between then and now, we can look back on it so fondly and see it so roundly, in its proper context. Channels like this are great for that!

The one thing you left out was the prompting of the roar. When the acetate recordings of the roar was supposed to start, they couldn’t make the lion make a peep. Finally, the lion tamer convinced a sound engineer to tug on the lions tail to make the roaring sound. The engineer did so (twice) to get the magical “roar”, however, when he attempted it a third time, the lion just spun around and snarled as if to say, “Knock it off!”. LOL

The lion was one hell of a sport, that’s for sure! He might have just been overjoyed that someone came back for him.

it was a B&W short from the early 50’s, so it’s probably this very lion :) Alfred Hitchcock did a short with the lion both of the sitting at a dining room table. Hitch talks with him. all very civilized. and, he was a very nice lion 😋 🦁 🌷

In addition to the plane crash, Jackie the Lion also survived a sinking ship, two train crashes, an earthquake, and an explosion in the studio, thus earning him the nick-name Leo the Lucky! The plane in the video that carried Jackie was a Ryan Brougham. If it looks vaguely familiar, it is because it looks like the Spirit of St. Louis flown by Charles Lindbergh. Mr. Lindbergh looked at the Ryan Brougham but ultimately had the Ryan company build a plane to his specifications. The Brougham was the starting point for the Spirit of St. Louis and used many of its design features. Thanks for a very interesting and fun video!

Did you mean to use that second "Was" in the title? It seems to destroy the semantic coherence of the sentence.

What an interesting story! Wasn't one of the MGM lions used in Chaplin's "The Circus"? Great work. I'm enjoying the 1920's while living in the 2020's.

Great video! Poor Jackie - after 6 days I would’ve been UPSET laying out there hot and hungry.

I'm surprised Jackie never danced on the wings of a plane!

Awesome overview! It’s not a desert though, lots of juniper trees… a chaparral or a scrub forest is a better description. Do one on the Mogollon Monster 10 miles to the north!

This story was passed down in my family with some significant embellishments. I really enjoyed the video which seems to have laid out the facts without the tall tale associated with my Great Uncle Volney Phifer, reputed to be one of the original "Leo" owners and a special effects man in the 1920s Hollywood. "The Great Train Robbery train crash was his work, I think.

Thank you, how marvellous to see! ❤️ My great-grandmothers sister animaltrainer Olga Celeste took care of Jackie during a period.

My God! That plane was made by the Ryan company. That's the same one that outfitted Charles Lindbergh.

A very cool now I know the history of the MGM lion. Just think what would happen if someone would try it now.
