1.9 Million claim Welsh ancestry, yet over 9 million Americans hold Such names that originate in Wales. What does that say? It says People in America still refuse to understand the difference between the English and Welsh. The English people are Anglo Saxon whereas the Welsh are Britons.

They don’t refuse to understand, they just don’t understand. I am American, and I lived in Wales for 17 years. My son is half Welsh. They just don’t get it.

I feel like it is the same with Ulster-Scots/Scots-Irish and Irish. A lot of Americans from Ulster-Scots heritage claim to be Irish. I think they just hear Irish in the name and wrongly assume.

It’s not just Welsh, most of them who claim Irish ancestry actually have British ancestry. Hardly any of them claim English ancestry but total emigration from England is far greater than from Ireland. It’s bizarre.

As for your Anglo Saxon versus Britain distinction, it’s really not that clear cut genetically at all. Most of the population in south Wales will have large amount of ‘English’ genetics because of 1000 years of emigration, from the Norman period up and beyond industrialisation. Plus most English will have ‘British’ genetics because there was population intermingling between the Anglo Saxons and Romano Brits in what became England.
