Yeah, it's really not true though. The administration of the Raj was obsessed with categorizing different groups in India, and assigning roles and traits to those groups. Most infamously with the idea of "criminal tribes", but also with the disproportionately high number of Sikhs in the army, who were seen by the British as more martial than other Indians.

They never promised that. Because India demanded that it be given independence before the partition, the responsibility of policing the partition was the responsibility of the Indian and Pakistani states.. Of course they did nothing and lost control but blamed the violence on Britain even though the British had no legal jurisdiction to flood the countries with the needed security forces to control such an event.

Or we can wake up the fact that before effectively backstabbing the entire independence movement, muslims had no reasonable fear of being persecuted as the century since then has revealed. Take a look at all ethnic minorities and religions in the regions that became pakistan though.... Muslims were afraid of ethnic cleansing because they project..and ultimately it's what they did with the bits of land they were given. The west keeps trying to complicate something that really comes down to islamic extremism, as it so often unfortunately does in that region.

I mean with almost 700 years of uninterrupted Islamic rule over the north of India Muslims had their rights well protected, when the british came and that period of Islamic rule ended Muslims found themselves oppressed at the hands of non Muslims (I.e. the British), it makes perfect sense that the VERY large Muslim minority (⅓ of all Muslims live in this region) would not be happy with more non Muslim rule and would want their own Muslim government(s)

@@nabeel8633 Given what the muslims did over those 700 years (it wasn't uninterrupted by any means though), they were projecting when they showed fear. There was certainly not a Muslim majority in all the northern region in that period either. They were afraid somebody would do to them what they did to others, in effect. A projection of values that made no sense given that the only power that matched them for their lust of ethnic cleansing were the british (another Abrahamic religion). It came down to religion and projection, not some reason fear of persecution post British-Raj. This is bourne out by the demographics of those who were shouting loudest. Rich, elitist muslims could not accept a sharing of power under any circumstance and drove the issue through the Muslim League. Which is why they were happy to negotiate for over a year with the British directly before publicly demanding their own state as a part of the formal negotiations.

Fun fact: the UN partition plan for Palestine was even weirder looking than the 1949 armistice boundary ended up being, envisioning two states divided entirely into seven mutual enclaves- that is, enclaves linked at quadripoints. You may not have heard of mutual enclaves before because they have never existed anywhere ever, but imagine if Baarle-Nassau/Hertog was blown up to the size of Belgium and somewhat simplified and you have some idea.

@@SamAronow The thing is the UN never aimed at "two states", but rather, it had delivered strict orders for both sides to create a single government that would encompass both Palestinians and Israelis. The jigsaw puzzle you must have seen on maps wasn't really two separate states but the territories that would be localized for one or the other ethnicity. Yes, the idea was really bad, but it was a desperate attempt of the UN to try to save the situation. It was obvious that the only other alternative would be war, which happened, and systematic ethnic cleansing, which is still on-going. Sadly, little more than this proposal could be done by the UN. I mean, this was happening in the middle of the Cold War, with Europe still being rebuilt, the constant looming fear of a nuclear holocaust, tensions on the iron curtain, Berlin split, Mao's China, Korean war, Vietnam War... and a UN that was still not as powerful as it is today, it basically didn't have the power to go into the Palestine region and enforce this new government whether they liked it or not.

@@raptorfromthe6ix833 Churchill didn't start the famine, but he's blamed for it because he did little to nothing to stop it. Many military generals begged him to send food and supplies over and he did to a small extent, but it was poorly distributed and uncared for. They wanted the Indians to be fed should the Japanese invade Burma. Churchill simply didn't care and in fact blamed the Indians for reproducing too much. The famine was caused by several things. The British did not allow the Indians to produce their own food (Indians had to pay for British food) and they were forced to grow crops like Indigo on these lands. The famine was the fault of Britishers, not just Churchill.

Strictly speaking, although partition was contemplated of both the Muslim and Hindu interests the 562 princes ultimately had the choice of joining either India, or Pakistan, or becoming independent. Therefore, it may have been possible to have a geographically unified country had the parties been able to work out their differences or through conquest

There's a three-step method to how modern borders in the most volatile, violent and explosive regions of the world have been drawn: 1. UK invades. 2. UK realizes it can't occupy the land half-a-world-away forever. 3. UK withdraws and arbitrarily decides who lives where and on what conditions with no regard for anyone's interest other than its own. It's the same story for America, India, Africa and pretty much anywhere the UK set foot, including Israel and Ireland. Almost every conflict post-WWII has erupted because of UK's willy-nilly approach to drawing borders.

In all honesty, the borders that were drawn by Radcliffe were pretty accurate given his time constraint. We can't blame him for the Kashmir issue. All things considered, his division of Punjab was as fair as it could get, under the circumstances. The only bone of contention was that Gurdaspur ended up being in India despite having a Muslim majority at the time. It proved to be very consequential because through Gurdaspur went the only road connecting mainland India to Kashmir at the time. Had India not been given Gurdaspur, it's entirely plausible that we would've lost Kashmir during 1948 or 1965 wars. Pakistan had all of the natural connectivity advantage over India during those times.

Fun fact: Indians have a more favorable view of Hitler than Churchill. I met an Indian guy who didn't realize Hitler was a bad guy, actually saying he admired Hitler for his patriotism and economic policies. I told him never to say that in the West, and told him that people associate Hitler with the Holocaust and he seemed like it was something he barely remembered, just PART of Hitler's legacy! Very interesting how different parts of the world take in history, based on its impact on them. India's unique where it probably wouldn't have any bad opinion of any of the Axis Powers, but had Japan reached India I bet they'd have a MUCH different take!

You could have mentioned the Cabinet Mission Plan in this video. Under this proposal India would have stayed united but under a federal system. The main reason this didn’t go ahead was due to how many on all sides feared that this would lead to states breaking off from India and destabilising the subcontinent as a result.

Ultimately, the blame has to be put on Nehru because he couldn't play the second fiddle to Jinnah and was a terrible negotiator and this is true especially for the days leading up to the cabinet mission's dissolution. I'd say though that Jinnah literally made it impossible to have any compromises after the failure of talks which directly led to the direct action day. Had that not happened, it is conceivable that Congress and Nehru ultimately would've agreed and compromised maybe after the second round of talks. But after direct action day, it was clear that Jinnah would not accept anything less than an independent state of Pakistan.

cuz the British inherited a fully functioning western-type administration in Ceylon (courtesy the Dutch) when they annexed it whereas in other areas you mentioned they had to create a beaurocracy and administration from scratch, so they lumped everything with India until they had to separate them.

Hyderabad initially declared independence, but the Indian army soon invaded and annexed the region. The other kingdom which did not join India was Sikkim at the foot of the Himalayas, right between Nepal and Bhutan. Here there was a revolution against the ruler in 1975, the Indian army invaded and the country formally asked to join India.

In 1975, after the Indian Army took over the city of Gangtok, a referendum was held that led to the deposition of the monarchy and Sikkim joined India.
