King George V, who reigned over the United Kingdom for 26 years, was quietly euthanized in 1936 due to the worsening of his lung cancer, from which he had been suffering for some time. We remember him fondly today and his legacy remains with us all.

What’s worse, the doctor chose the time for it to happen, so that the announcement would be in the morning papers rather than the tabloids. The nurses were all afraid to do it so he did it personally. Later when he sat in parliament, he voted against a bill that would have legalised euthanasia.

I think he handled the situation with grace, also whilst protecting the family from potential slander and the kings reputation, he saw how much pain that came from it and helped barr people from potentially making devastating mistakes, because be honest if euthinasa was common in edwardian and Victorian eras it would've been a brawl

@@PlanetNinetyTwo That is not fit for a king and to his people. Hypocricy? I don't think so. They did it themselves and it so bad they don't want anyone to go through that. For a Queen to do that to a King and not let his people go through the same pain is noble not hypocritical.

@Elise Cooper right. People dont understand how important genetics are. Some smokers live over 100. Some people can not really be concerned over their health and somehow live long and healthy. Some can live very healthy and die young. At the end of it all, the unhealthy choices only increase risk. Some people are just destined to get ill Edit: Ya'll are confused. I didn't say smoking was healthy. I'm saying it isn't a 100% confirmed death sentence 🤦‍♂️ How many people have unhealthy habits and seem unaffected? At one time, Doctors would ask the family or the family would ask the Doctor, to give the patient something for the pain, knowing it would end their life and their suffering. This was possible, because in UK if the patient was at home, and a Doctor was present at time of death, he/she could write the death certificate and a post mortem was not required to determine the cause. Then shipmen gave them something for the pain, without the family consent, which has resulted in many having a pre-longed painful death as doctors are no longer prepared to end the suffering of terminally ill patients who are in extreme

A lot of comments say smoking doesn’t give you cancer it’s more genetic. I would agree to a certain point. Just like some people can eat many calories and stay thin. The issue is it happens less often than we would hope. The reality is most of us will get sick from anything so reducing the risk is actually a smart thing. Smoking and feeling you won’t be a statistic is the silly thing to do.

@@jeanninegodwin2285 little loop hole around it being illegal and so very taboo. I remember clearly the instructions the hospice nurse gave us. Almost 20 years ago. They really are some of the most compassionate people I've ever met. I can't imagine how Hard their specific line of work is. So very necessary in our world of red tape and impossibilities. Washington state has a program called death with dignity.. albeit that seems more for people who are not on the brink of death, but have a long extremely hard life ahead of them. Sorry for that little tangent there.

This King was the grandson of Queen Victoria. The Kings first cousins were Kieser Willham of Germany and The Emperor of Russia who pleaded for him to save his family from the Communist murderers , but he refused. 1918. Anastasia cried in vain !

he didnt refused per say. he was threatened and nicholas understood that the safety of george's wife and five young children comes first before him, no matter how close they were as grandchildren of victoria. as much as i cried for the romanov children, the british government at that time were right that the tzar, especially alexandra were not completely innocent in instigating the wrath of rasputin and the russian nationalists. and its pretty obvious you're just parroting since you used anastasia to prove your point when only olga and alexei are the only children actually relevant enough to russia to be personally talked about outside court 🤷‍♀

Medically assisted death essentially. Those calling it suicide have never watched a loved one die in that state. In the end, my Mum too asked for it to end. We don't let our animals suffer yet so many let their loved ones!

Without looking too much into it, it probably was not euthanasia, if the king was in pain and going to die in a few days/weeks giving him a peaceful death without pain is not euthanasia, it is just standart procedure, and the ethical thing to do.

An overdose of morphine would have done it. As a former IV cocaine user, he heard a freight train, everyone's voices sounded weird, his heart started beating fast & probably died an anxious, scary death. Hopefully the morphine knocked him out first.
