The days when people removed their hats out of respect. I'm not a monarchist but there's no denying the emotion of this piece and the adults in the film who'd lived through the dark days of WW2. My mum who was 28 years old in 1952 told me that for days after his death the only music you could hear on the radio was funereal. I suspect for that generation it must've been as if God had died.

Perhaps you mean he never took *to* the crown, because he certainly was present at his coronation on May 12, 1937 (the same date and basically the same program with a couple of cut and pastes as the intended coronation of his elder brother). P. S., if my assumption about your comment is correct, I disagree. While the responsibilities no doubt weighed upon him, I have no doubt he was glad to play his essential role in the British Empire's prosecution of WWII and, if hypothetically asked, would readily have served again over the same time period and in the same circumstances.
