Elizabeth R took the throne when Stalin and Churchill were still in power, before the launch of Sputnik, before the Polio vaccine and before anyone ever heard of Elvis Presley. That's crazy.

The days when people removed their hats out of respect. I'm not a monarchist but there's no denying the emotion of this piece and the adults in the film who'd lived through the dark days of WW2. My mum who was 28 years old in 1952 told me that for days after his death the only music you could hear on the radio was funereal. I suspect for that generation it must've been as if God had died.

In Geelong, Australia, I remember my mother bringing in the morning paper. She unfolded it and leaned back against the door:The King is dead, she said softly. In the shop windows tributes to the king were on show. We then had to adjust our National Anthem to God save the Queen.

As a further point of possible interest, Geelong Grammar School once had a certain Dr William McKie as its Director of Music. Nearly 20 years later, the same gentleman conducted the music during the 1953 Coronation Service in his capacity as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey - a task for which he was rewarded by becoming 'Sir' William McKie!

Perhaps you mean he never took *to* the crown, because he certainly was present at his coronation on May 12, 1937 (the same date and basically the same program with a couple of cut and pastes as the intended coronation of his elder brother). P. S., if my assumption about your comment is correct, I disagree. While the responsibilities no doubt weighed upon him, I have no doubt he was glad to play his essential role in the British Empire's prosecution of WWII and, if hypothetically asked, would readily have served again over the same time period and in the same circumstances.

@@paulinbrooklyn I do accept ur assessment, I'm talking from his emotional reaction to the heavy duties of being monarch , I've always seen king George Vi as the suffering servant, wen I said he never took the crown Im using the lessons of duty over freedom , he was by far the best image in world war 2 ,but his loving wife Elizabeth was his strength through the abdication and his eventual ascent to king , many more highly qualified in the history of that time could see his deep sadness at the end of his freedom to the tough role he had to play , and just to add acceptance of your view he surpassed Victoria as the most significant monarch in the 20 th century

Couldn’t stand the Queen mother. She was absolutely full of herself. She tried to “ run things” after Elizabeth became Queen and never respected Elizabeth as Queen. She was an actress enjoying the attention. She held her head in a little tilt…..” ain’t I adorable?” UGH

What I said was because I was leading the Man on who wrote that Comment and I have got a great deal of Respect for the Queen as well as having in My own Record Collection a Three LP Box set of the 1953 Coronation Service and I also agree with you over your Comment over the Russian Premiere and if you are interested in buying a copy of the 1953 Coronation Service it's on His Master's Voice and the Record Numbers are ALP-1056 ALP-1057 and ALP-1058 Mono only and the Recording is very good Considering it's almost 70 years old but I haven't got any Respect for H.R.H Prince Andrew or Prince Charles as both of them are as bad as each other and I don't like or trust Megham Markle

"Thereafter, still not sparing himself, he undertook his great tour of Canada..." Rough duty indeed. Sailing on the finest ship, staying in the best hotels, eating the best food. All he had to do was smile and shake hands. But wait! The statesman that he was went to visit FDR in the US. Once again the most comfortable travel arrangements, best accommodations... But by George he cemented the relationship between the US and Jolly Olde England! Good job old chap!
