For me, the best part of Legion was how much content you had. And I don't mean the repetitive stuff, but content that made the world feel alive. You had leveling campaing, each class had it's own story and you had suramar, balance of Power... Hell even professions had their own campaings. All that stuff coming our way after an expansion where the story felt halted for 2 years was awesome.

I started playing in Legion and I absolutely loved the game. But can't say I was crazy about those "grind twenty dungeons" quests from Light's Heart :P A lot of Legion was extremely grindy, not just AP, Suramar story was rep-gated, there were those Xe'ra quests, there was grinding to get the higher ranking recipes for crafting, but it was definitely brimming with content like you say.

Legion honestly feels like it could have been the end of WoW. I know there are a lot of loose threads to tie up, but shutting Sargeras down and dismantling the Burning Legion is pretty much what most of WoW was built around. With those elements gone, Blizzard kinda had to start pulling on other loose threads to keep shit going, or even just creating entirely new lore.

I do honestly feel like the faction war premise of BfA could've _actually_ carried an entire expansion and set up future threats in order to fill this void and make continuing after Legion feel more natural. It could've worked like a soft reboot, getting back to the original premise of the series, but instead they IMO rushed into their new multi expansion Sylvanas storyline way too quickly.
@MrSpookersMcGeeThe1st
@MrSpookersMcGeeThe1st 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. For as much vitriol as BFA gets, I can appreciate it as a palette cleanser, something smaller scale and closer to home to set up a bigger threat. I just think how BFA was handled kinda spoiled that opportunity. And Shadowlands is just hard to connect with. I don’t know if it’s the mad amounts of new lore and retcons, but it almost doesn’t feel like WoW to me. Which is a shame, because I want to praise an otherwise really cool premise.

Legion seemed to be the last expansion where they had a good solid content pipeline, heck they managed to add 4 new zones while it went on, ontop of cinematics and a story that was compellint to players of all sides and all the other systems they added. Shadowlands wasn't supposed to have a content drought but covid and everything going on at blizzard is causing another WoD situation.

@darthvaderreviews6926
@darthvaderreviews6926 3 жыл бұрын
@@kaelmic7476 That's a big part of the issue. Practically _every_ unsatisfied fanbase will say "there isn't enough content", when in reality it's not so much the content as much as how the content is being used. WoW is a "theme park" style MMO that relies on a lot of accretive design, so the result is if the new expansion features aren't landing with enough consistency, it can feel like the whole expansion's been wasted. It's not like if Feature A and B fail, but Feature C is a landmark success, WoW can still do okay and piggyback off Feature C's success for a while, Feature C will then proceed to get the entire playerbase burnt out within a couple of weeks. It's not just a problem with the expansions, but essentially WoW itself, as raids _are_ essentially WoW's "Feature C" and yet they aren't capable of justifying people playing by themselves. Stuff like the Timeless Isle is kind of the exception to this rule and WoW needed a lot more stuff with that kind of "Well, if all else fails to hold interest, you can still..." philosophy.

*Legion* was the swan song of many developers of the old guard (pre Vanilla), that left Blizzard and or the WoW Team for greener pastures. So there was a big push to make this one count. Also, the fact Legion was so big was the reason WoD was put on "life support". It had more resources during production than an expansion would normally have.
@julianbarzana5821

If i remember correctly, Legion had more resources because its release date was delayed until the WoW movie came out. Thats another reason why WoD was extended.

I called Legion WoWs swan song while it was still going on. It wasn't perfect, but it seemed like every patch gave us something fans have been asking for for years and some we didn't even dare to dream of. Getting things like Ashbringer, justice for Illidans story and the bombshell that was going to Argus and Sargeras. It felt like the devs were giving the fans everything they possibly could, so even if something wasn't 100% perfect you could feel the developers caring for what they put out. Sargeras was the final goal we didn't dream to ever reach and it was given to us and That told me that someone on the dev team was saying: "This is it, now or never, we go out with a bang!"

@Sypha Flowen No, they did. I specifically remember a lot of people calling out how Legion was pandering to the single-player experience and how it wasn't "real WoW". Every expansion you get a different wave of "Back in my day" players. Honestly, I think people aren't engaging much with the Shadowlands story because they're just mad that Blizzard essentially ruined everything BUT the story to the game. I think the story is actually pretty decent (comparatively to older expansions); they had to create completely new characters, and there is A LOT to sift through. The issue with Shadowlands is it's yet another expansion built upon faulty & clunky systems that nobody wants to play with because they feel like chores.

@Kimi Timoskainen canonically for myself and my warlock, WoW ended at Legion and with having tasted power back in MoP by besting Kanrethad Ebonheart then the artifacts of Uthalos, Thal'kiel's Skull, and the Scepter of Sargeras, my warlock went into reclusion. As any warlock is wont to do, she ended up seeking greater power and messed with things that are better left untouched. She opened a dimensional portal and got drawn in, her hidden workshop wrecked in the process and she was left adrift in the cold dark until a light plucked her from her her consequences brought to her by her hands. It spoke and comforted her and she closed her eyes but when she opened them again, she was in a carriage with a man and two elves she had never seen before. Her call to magic impossible and only a bow at her side as she traveled with these strangers through a forest. Thats my story for my warlock going from WoW to FFXIV with some plausible situations and, imo, perfectly summarizes my switching from WoW to FFXIV

@Kimi Timoskainen Yeah, the Order Halls being treated as an expansion only gimmick is a complete waste. I remember back at the Legion Alpha that every class got its own version of the Druid moonglade teleport/ Monk Zen Pilgrimage, that took them straight to the Order Hall at lvl 16. They could have reintroduced that after Legion and make the Order Halls the class versions of Monks Peak of Serenity with their own small dailies, class quests and small class specific gear. Considering the whole afterlife theme, I was expecting them to go full-on nostalgia focused with Shadowlands, and just bring out a ton of old characters. But most of them are barely even cameos, and even then their past lives aren't really like... explored at all? They sort of bring up what they used to be, but it in no way plays into the actual plot of Shadowlands. They could have had a whole thing where known characters are sort of reenacting/continuing the grudges they had in life; Garrosh stuck in an endless battle against enemies of the Horde, or Kael'thas trying desperately to find salvation for his people, to no avail; the player made to help them in some way, or just join in on the eternal conflict temporarily. But sure, I guess we could spend the whole campaign in skeleton land hanging out with Thrall's mom instead... that's much more interesting.

my only problem with this criticism is that you're only addressed as the champion because of game logic/limitations and to a certain extent, voice overs. before voice acting was a common thing in the game, they just had the speech bubbles do the talking where they could have the game spit out your name without much issue. but since now the main story quests are almost all voice acted these days, i guess they felt they had to have some way of addressing the player character. but even then, in legion and at times, in-engine cutscenes (most recently the garrosh one in SoD) they do add in player characters (or in the case of at least one legion pre-rendered cinematic, representatives of the class orders) to show that you're not alone. because that's the reality, you're not doing this alone. i wont disagree that they do a bad job at showing this most of the time, though. but again, it's mostly all because of limitations. and honestly, even the complaints which go hand in hand with the "chosen character" trope about how "we're too powerful because we've killed old gods and titans" in more recent times (past wotlk) are kind of dumb. we're really only able to do these things because we receive help from major characters *during* the encounters.

@Sypha Flowen the expansion that kept trying to tell me that my buddies and I were all important but when it came time to save the planet Lady Liadrin and Reghar Earthfury are there channeling their weapons along side other major lore characters because canonically we can't all be special so somebody had to be the real leaders. The player went on the adventures for gameplay reasons because it's a video game. Story wise we were at best one of the champions being sent on missions at the table but more likely one of the disposable units. Blizzard did an awful job of showing this in game but while we are at it, you also didn't run the war effort on Draenor or lead the fight against the opposite faction in BFA and spoiler you'll end up not being important to your covenant. But you did take the fight to ragnaros cthun and KT, stormed the Hellfire Peninsula and help push across outlands and you even proved your worth at the Argent tournament. All the things that a generic character can take part in you helped with. All the awful savior crap they've been pushing for years is because they don't have anyone to write a decent story anymore.

Shadowlands not on the level of WoD? 100% true, since it was much worse. In every aspect. Yes, WoD had people hate it because of its content drought and cut content. I've played WoW since 2005. Legion to me, is the best expansion ever made. People just... they don't appreciate enough how much Legion did to reverse the game from bad to great. Legion added a LOT of content for Casuals AND for Hardcore players. They achieved a great feat and sadly, after Legion closed the curtain, the game once again started to slowly become bad/worse again. Legion was so good, I leveled every Class to 110 to do all the Class Quests and story and Artifacts for every class and spec. Legions World Quest System, The Dungeons, The Raids, The Artifact weapon design and how casuals could catch up but Hardcore players still benefited... Mythic+... I could go on forever. There was never be a WoW expansion as good as Legion again.

"random pirates and trolls you never heard of before"? Rastakhan has been a vague shadow in the lore since classic but the Zandalari have continuously popped up here and there throughout the game. The kul tirans were a little more obscure but theyv made a few appearances most notably in Warcraft 3 and Jaina Proudmoor, a Kul Tiran, is one of the central characters of WoW.

As good as legion was, people forget that the "progression-system" treadmill, and it's many resets began in legion. @@AsprosOfAzeroth It WAS fun.....then they made the work meaningless, by maxing out the AP after killing argus, even doing it on LFR produced the same result. You could have simply done the bare minimum AP farming throughout legion, waited till antorus, killed Argus after 5 stacks of determination, and the effect would have been the same. Now, I won't lie that I was happy I didn't have to farm AP any more, and the little graphic meter showing AP amount constantly surging ever higher made me feel like I won the lottery. But, a move like that really only works once. They did the same thing with the Heart artifact and it enraged people to get their time spent in game erased. My argument isn't that they shouldn't design a game like this, WoW has ALWAYS been a progression treadmill, my argument is that being so blatant about it feels like a slap in the face.

I would love to relive my Legion days. But I question a classic server being the answer to that. Things in the game are always tied to the current season. Once the season moves on, everything leading up to the new season gets abandoned and left to rot. People don't play .0 raids in .1. It might be interesting to relive that, but to have it unfold before you on a pre-planned schedule as people mow through the steps on time and forget about them the next tier defeats the magic to me.

It was literally the best looking weapons in the game and still is in many cases, which is actually a bad thing but no surprise after everything that has been revealed over the past years. I think in addition to all the great points made by by hirumaredx - the idea of what we now call "borrowed power" was fairly new with the introduction of Artifact Power. While people may have seemed on the fence about it, it was still relatively new - it felt "fresh". Fast forward two expansions later where you have a player base that is tired of building up Artifact, Azerite, Conduit / Renown ranks, because they know that all of this will be useless day 1 of the very next expansion, and it gets exhausting. Granted - things like tier sets were typically replaced with green / blue quest reward items - it still felt like some sort of progression. The pattern now is: "BUILD THIS ANCIENT LEGENDARY INCREDIBLE ITEM HERO!" - and then magically its worthless the very next time a new system gets introduced.

The fact Legion just had a ton of content was really nice too; just the different class order halls encouraged me to make a ton of alts in an effort to see them all, collect all the artifact weapons and outfits, etc. Compare that to BFA, where all the Azerite stuff is the same, and they even removed class-specific tier sets. Or Shadowlands, where the entire levelling experience is one railroaded, linear thing, so there's absolutely no point in playing it again a second time.

I don't see Shadowlands going off the rails storywise because that would require Blizzard to do something with the major characters they brought with them. So far, Thrall, Jaina, and Sylvanas have been sitting around doing absolute nothing while the Champion is off cleaning up the Covenants. Blizzard is so resistant to actually doing anything with Sylvanas that isn't a teaser and I don't see them changing that anytime soon. Going off the rails would require telling the players what's actually going on and everything about the Jailer, the Maw and Sylvanas is so shrouded in mystery that it can't do anything other than have a last minute "shocking twist." Wrath of the Lich King, you knew what you were there for. To kill a villain that had been built up since Warcraft 3. The main villain of Shadowlands is actually a hero that some misogynistic pigs randomly decided to make a villain one day two years ago. This obsession with shock value means the story will never get to the point of being crazy and ridiculous because Danuser is too busy trying to look smart.

They had multiple class order hall stories, Suramar, withered army training, the introduction of m+ (before they ruined it in bfa), and each patch brought in new meaningful content. They added the Chromie scenario just for fun, literally had no character power tied to it. Same for mage tower. If Torghast was designed better and left to be content you just did for fun like in the alpha it would have been much better. And the content was on a predictable schedule. id say a bigger problem with shadowlands is they are trying to do big legion like reality ending lore, but with characters who we are given no motivations, backstory, or insight into. I could not care about the jailor in the slightest, sylvanas feels sloppy at best and terrible at worst (i would rather her be overtly evil than so dumb as to be like I will never serve, after literally serving for years.) plot points never play out, such as the big cannon, teldrassil burning, elune fucking over the night elves, the mess that was tyrande. Your character feels bad despite having a ton of old talents back because gear and bonuses are either boring or percentage increases. The lack of gear sets, the time gating, piss poor story fragmented over multiple mediums, a lack of proper world building, and progressively larger threats makes it so I as a player just feel like im being tossed from set piece to set piece being told how concerned i need to be about something i know nothing about. Wrath excelled because i knew the lich king, i knew arthas in depth, i knew how the characters around him related to him, and I knew how he impacted the world. Mists lacked that, but told a story over an expansion with garrosh that gave me everything i needed to know in game, and made his descent into madness feel palpable. Legion had us face the corrupted titan and legion of lore that had been established pre WoW even. The game feels directionless, stuck up its own ass on how to play it, and passionless. Pair all that with what is going on publicly and i dont think i will be returning to the azeroth i had come to love so dearly.

Legion was really the "in case of an emergency, break glass." type of expansion. Blizzard went all out with it. Players felt powerful, wielding weapons of legends, commanding important lore characters, every class getting their own campaign, Long requested Demon hunters made into a class, Fighting against the legion itself and finally finishing off 3 major villians in Xavius, Guldan and Kil'jaedan. In fact if WoW had ended with this expansion, i am fairly certain people would have been satisfied. BFA and Shadowlands were opposite of that. Players power was constantly undermined, Crafting sucked again, almost all the characters were new (less so in BFA), We barely got to kill any of the final bosses of raids anymore, as if Blizzard was afraid to actually finish ANY plot threads, The Plot moved forward way too slowly, with every single character always having a "master plan" that we never found out cuz they were SO SMART, Customization was actually very limited despite attempts to create important choices, and every single New type of content was a grind with barely any meaningful reward, and RNG was everywhere. Thats why. At least thats my opinion.

I don't really understand why is Legion for the most people considered the best modern expansion? For me it wasn't as fun as it could be. Sure it had a lot of content and Class campaigns were a nice addition. And we got Artifact weapons with new abilities. But on the other hand we were left with the classes that were pruned in WoD and the bland playstyle. All the classes played pretty much the same, no variety. Then we got World Quests which were boring in the long run and repetitive and would pop up constantly when you flew over a zone, which was really annoying. And the leveling zones were too small/congested and it just felt weird. Overall I cannot complain about the lack of content, since that was not the problem, but for me Legion was the first expansion that didn't feel like WoW I used to play. WoD for me was closer to WoW I enjoyed playing at least in terms of lvling, but the lack of content and garrisons a.k.a missed opportunity for player housing was really bad. I think the last WoW expansion I really enjoyed was MoP. I won't go into details why, but most people here would know why MoP was really fun.

WoW Reborn! Make WoW small again! Never mind that in vanilla we kill two Black Dragon wyrms of surpassing power and cunning, an Old God avatar, the manifestation of Ragnaros the Firelord and Kel'thuzad himself, cutting down entire hosts of undead minions from dancing necromancers to whole gangs of Death Knights. Let's fight the Scarlet Crusade again, because in Vanilla we didn't fight them until we learned they were so succesful because a dreadlord, Balnazzar, had infiltrated them. Classic WoW was only about herding sheep and killing bandits as far as level thirty five. It's a fantasy world full of crazy power scales, and it has always been, for all people complain about the stakes being too cosmical for their tastes.

As i said before perhaps, Legion is the expansion that made people to come back. Because of Illidan Stormrage Teaser, and Legion take us back to The Burning Crusade where this part happened and so on. We players who never played during The Burning Crusade will have the experiences for what people have in that time. And in Legion we learned much about the Lore throught all zones on the Broken Isle, and so with characters we have seen like Illidan, Tyrande, Malfurion, Ysera, Sargeras, Velen, and so on. And Legion had the 77 days cycels. Every 77 days they came with something new. And in Legion we carried on Artifact Power which came from noble heroes that died. And we had Class Hall for each Class in the game. For me, I cannot remember BFA or Shadowlands or Draenor was so good as Legion. Legion was perfect balanced in and out.

I think you completely missed the mark on this. Shadowlands' failure is not all, or even primarily, driven by the lack of player power. The lack of content, the complete butchering of the lore, and the severe restrictions in what content you can do (everything that is available being turned into a chore you HAVE to do for player power) all have a bigger effect on things, I think.

I wouldnt mind if they used the same pattern from legion in every expansion. A pattern where everything i do directly effects my character progression and gives it significant role in the lore. It felt like everything we did was to make our characters stronger to the defeat the enemy while discovering the true class identity. But in SL no matter what we do somehow we are irrelevant to the covenants we chose. I wished they made a way for us to connect with the covenant of our choice rather than working for them like we went in the shadowlands just to work as their slaves. No i did not run in to a black hole on top of icc to end up as a servant for a covenant ive never even heard of and on top if that in two years im leaving you guys until i die again. And on top of that all i cannot stand that some of the players have to chose the covenants that are not their favorite because they will lack dps or hps, so they cant even merge with the game properly. In BfA i can understand that we are in a war with our factions but again the reason for character progression was lame. We traded ashbringers for necks that had shiny effects only if you play high level end content that just killed the fun for many casual players. I am not a game dev and i dont know how to fix the problems that they have made, but i sure hoped for 3 years that blizzard themselves could make the change. Instead, they sprinted as far away as they could from the general player base. And now even if 10.0 turns out good, how many of us will live in fear that expansion after will suck. Constant love hate relationship with game addicting as wow should stop because at this point not only that player base has been hurt, but devs and blizzard employees themselves.

Legion was the only expansion where I could truly said I felt the class I was playing. Lets go all the more important druids in the history of the lore gather together. The most powerful warlocks join as a single group to face the current threat. The Death Knights being on the shadows for so long and now looking for more power to defeat the enemy and I can go on and on with the other classes. It it was a UNIQUE experience with every class.

Like many are saying, the amount of content and the fact that we got more of it about every 80 days was the beat part for me. It kept the game so fresh. It's what I expect from a game that I pay $15 a month for. If expansions had that much content, they are immediately better. I don't understand how a multi-billion dollar company can't keep that content schedule but here we are.

Legion was this expansion where you really wanted to play each and every class to max level because of the engaging and fun storylines they had. That alone consumed so much time, but it never really got boring, even on the sixth, seventh and eighth alt. Then there was Suramar, this extremely long campaign to take the city and dethrone the tyrant. You started literally from zero in a dank old ruin with a crack addict elf and ended up saving a city and an entire race. It felt so rewarding and gave meaning to the Nighthold raid. Overall, Legion had so much to do and so many little fun fings to find that I happily logged back in every day. First expansion since Wrath where I kept my Sub running the whole expansion without break. And then came BFA and suddenly you get told that your class order, which has grown together to fight the Legion, suddenly goes separate ways because Sylvanas likes bonfires... Legion would have been at this high point where they should have quit. End WoW with a bang and work on a WoW 2 or some other MMO while players continue playing Legion for years waiting for the next big adventure. Instead, we got Wacky World War followed by Wacky 2, Afterlife stories...

never seeing the Mage Tower after how successful and popular it was made me realize that I can't trust Blizzard to deliver they just seem too random in their quality and how good they're gonna do during an expansion they could make the most perfect expansion and in the next expansion they'd do a shit job because they never learn the lessons they should learn they might repeat their mistakes but they never repeat the success things they do during an expansion

What I loved was the fact that legion didnt focus on the main plot. There were arcs that brought it all together but at the same time kept seperate from everything else. I actually had motivation to keep playing all the zones and the quests were so damned fun. World quests actually didnt feel like a chore and the rewards were hella worth it. It also felt like TBC also, the zones had their own proper theme and damn the music was the best. Honestly, the best expansion i had played in retail. Not to mention actual class campaigns and at the end of it all, a lovely mount that went with it. The secret skins you can get for your artifact weapons. I have never felt so contempt in just playing the content.
