In the fourth round of the FIDE World Rapid Championship 2023, GM Parham Maghsoodloo (2644) was up against GM Magnus Carlsen (2818). Though Magnus was winning at one part of the game, a blunder by the World No. 1 gave Parham a chance to equalize the game. But as the game reached its conclusion, something happened that surprised Magnus.

Explanation for beginners: If you dont move 50 moves a pawn or capture a piece - it will be a draw due to 50-moves-rule. Last pawn move was on move 47. Game ended on move 87. Parham tried to claim 50 moves. Magnus understood within seconds, that there were only 40 moves.

Imagine how it was to play rapid in era when there were not DGT boards and proper chess software for computers. In 1988 FIDE organized so called "Active chess world championships " with rapid time control and Karpov won it. Kasparpv was upset, he did not play there and said ; "If Karpov is active chess champion who am I then ? Passive champ ?" I am pretty sure they did not have DGT boards back then and players did not have enough time to write moves on scoresheet.Perhaps they put arbiter next to every board to write down moves ? in 1998 Elista Olympiad FIDE first used more than 300 DGT boards in big tournament and is using since then in every important event.

Originally there was no such rule, and frankly the rule is slightly dubious in how it helps the chess game itself. It was brought in because, from a tournament structure perspective, you don't want really want games that could potentially go on for many more than 150 moves, and absolutely don't want potential games where both players are just trying to wait for the opponent to blunder mentally first in drawn positions just because they refuse to agree to a draw. The few games that have gone over 200 moves in these settings, especially if it started in the afternoon, tend to go on way too long (heavily impacting the next day of playing for both players) and be incredibly dull to watch. So, the theory goes, if neither side makes a single capture or pawn move for 50 moves straight, then there must not be any advantage to convert (as a good player would have made such progress substantially within 50 moves) and the game is drawn. Of course, things are rarely that theoretical. It is possible to make a positional mistake that doesn't lose material but still loses the game, but if you are close to the 50 move rule the game is still maybe drawn. Or you could be objectively winning and simply be having trouble with a difficult pattern that you will eventually get (a few tournaments back Super GrandMaster Nepo found himself in a Queen vs Rook situation, which is winning for the Queen but with a very tricky pattern, which Nepo seemingly couldn't precisely recall. But part of the stress that made Nepo fail to win (via 50 move rule draw) was that it is a very long pattern even when correct and 50 moves was looming over him. Or you could simply argue that chess "should" be about mental stamina, and if you think you have a slight advantage you should be able to try and grind out a win, and not stopped because you are using too many moves to do so. At the end of the day it has many flaws and can be situationally positive but is really designed to restrict statistical outliers that could interfere with tournament priorities, at the cost of sometimes drawing winning games.

@@rowanmales3430bruh this rules was made so people wouldnt keep playing in an dead draw position for hours just to try stalling the opponent clock saying it dosent help is absurd because in a general level of chess there is a lot of toxic kids who would try that.
@rowanmales3430
@rowanmales3430 4 ай бұрын
@@flacsomtodosclas2165 ...And that is a problem? If it is a dead drawn position, but someone wants to play on and hope for a blunder, why should that not be allowed? It is only a "drawn position" with perfect play after all, and humans are not perfect. You also risk being the one to blunder instead. Also, there is a natural end based on 3-Fold Repetition draw which you are ignoring which stops the exact same position being played endlessly. So long as you can keep posing NEW positions to your opponent, your opponent should be required to choose how to defend that position. Seems pretty obviously correct to me.

@@radicalrick9587 I am not criticising Magnus. I am a big fan of him. And I did not look at the engine. I just paused and analysed at the critical juncture when I saw the evaluation bar jump back to almost equal from a winning position. Which meant that he missed a tactic. I am just bringing out the better move for the other viewers of the channel. If you can stop judging me, you will see that I was not looking down at Magnus but instead inviting a discussion about the correct move for fellow chess lovers.

Ke4 threatening knight, after knight move to h6 (if knight move to other square will be taken), then Rd2 check, white king must move to 1st rank and black can slowly chop all white pawn..

You lose the knight, the rook dominates it and after Ke4 knight can only go to h6 and I think it's lost after Rh7 Ng8 Kf5 since Ke6 and Kg7 can't be stopped and knight gets picked off
@manchild3437
@manchild3437 4 ай бұрын
I can see that if Knight takes, the Black King can go to E4, causing the Knight's only safe squares to be E3 and H6. If Knight E3, the Knight is lost when the Rook checks the White King, but I can't see a problem with Knight B6. Maybe it leads to some sort of Mating Attack with the Rook and Black King?
