That picture of Marc at 2:04 lives rent free in my mind at all times.. it is prime NYC style and attitude. I feel like Marc is respected and given credit but I don’t think people really grasp how important he was for fashion from the 90s through the 2010s. Also his “Heaven” line is so nostalgic for Millennials and resonating with Gen Z.

As someone who is obsessed with both fashion and grunge music, I loved this video! I just think it's funny that even though Courtney initially hated the collection to the point of "burning" it, she now appears to be good friends with Marc and is often seen attending his shows and such. She also got super mad at Vetements for copying one of Kurt's shirt that said "corporate magazines still suck", but she didn't mind Marc's redux grunge collection, I wonder why 🤔 Anyways, Marc also casted Coco Gordon Moore (daughter of Kim and Thurston from Sonic Youth) as a model for the redux collection, which I thought was so cute! Ok I'm done geeking, thank you for the video!!

THANK YOU!!!!! FINALLY!!!! Someone on here who got the story right! I was actually 'there' in the fashion biz at the time and this was absolutely right-on. People forget that there were actually a few designers showing 'grunge' that season (but I do remember loving Marc's the best at the time,) ... I even remember jousting with my EIC to get it on the cover of our 'collections' issue!.... even though personally, I actually didn't like that whole 'grunge' thing going on back then, because I felt it was a bit of a let-down and even quite boring, as those were essentially the same things my friends and I wore for years throughout college and stuff, (albeit in more expensive fabrics!) and I had just gotten into the fashion biz at the time to get away from all that, so I wanted G-L-A-M-O-U-R!!!!! LOL ... but we saw the significance of it right away. But as you noted, many in the fashion press didn't at the time, especially the big guns. Everything was very much 'status quo' and the runway had it's own set of rules as to what one could and couldn't show, which had been set in stone for years at that point. But we were young, plucky things at the time, so we 'got' it. It wasn't so much the 'grunge' theme that was important. (My EIC called it 'window dressing' ... and yes, it was not quite the 'real deal', but a 'fashion-ised' version of it,) It was the fact that it was the 'break' needed from the hyper-coordinated, extremely tailored, and yes 'glamourous' fashion that came just before. Suddenly, there was a 'freedom' in fashion where you could mix any proportion, any fabric, any garment you liked - and the more 'vintage' looking, the more personal looking, the better. And yes, the 'high-low' aesthetic that we all take for granted today.... that was UNHEARD of on the international runways at the time. (As I said, the runways played to a very different set of rules back then that I don't think the current generation can even fathom. Even up to that point in the early 90's, a designer collection had to look and be presented a certain way, or else it wasn't considered 'credible' at all....) I remember that 'free' attitude significantly affected the mainstream market for many years after that... and still does in a way, especially with the whole 90's redux thing happening. And YES!!!! I was also working for a big fashion trade paper at the time, so I also knew that the honchos at Perry Ellis were definitely changing strategy (which I might add, was in the works LONG before that spring '93 show,) and did indeed support his 'comeback' with his own label, - even financially to some extent! - so it didn't really seem like an acrimonious 'firing', though that's what passed into history. GAWD I feel old! and my post was WAY too long :P

Hmmm, I saw grunge as a reaction to hair metal, not punk. Punk wasn’t really mainstream in the late 80s. My friends and I loved grunge because it honored the punk ethos. Hair metal was extremely corporate. Nevermind changed everything overnight. Made everything else seem even more stale and trite than it already did. This was how I experienced it anyway.

This was such a long time ago and it’s hard to imagine how people might have been upset about this collection at the time but I remember when grunge came on the scene and I despised it because it seemed to be killing glamour. Looking back at this collection now it looks very chic.

I remember getting up at 5am to watch this show on Video Fashion, a few weeks after it came out. I was very into glamour, but I loved the deconstructed broken down appeal of grunge, how accessible it was, and how it could kind of neutralize your sexuality. That said, it wasn't actually that new. It had begun in the eighties, with art students turned pop stars wearing out size tailored pieces, huge jackets and Tees with headbands, torn knits and scruffed up blow dried hair. A kind of non-look look. I don't know what you'd call - but think early Bananarama. I think that's where grunge actually started. Nothing new under the sun I guess. What a fun trip you've taken me down memory lane.

I watched the show on FTV at the time and it was scandal for days. There was a lot of high drama shows in the 90s and that was definitely one of them. Marc kind of took it from both ends because the collection was totally rejected by the street. No one I knew at the time would go near it with a million foot pole. Wearing runway during the age of grunge was a definite no. No one even talked about fashion, i was definitely odd man out for even giving a shit. It was all thrift all the time. The only thing you wore new was undies, socks and occasionally shoes. It was probably thee most eco friendly fashion movement of all time.

grunge actually looked exotic to me. for one thing all the guys had long hair which is exotic in America. And the mix of guys with long cool-looking hair and kinda "dad" clothes like Kurt's sweaters was exotic. I'm not sure what women in grunge were doing back then. I think they may have been doing something different from the guys. It'd be a good topic for someone.

They follow already existant inclinations of their potential readers. Flash back 1990's i worked at very high end department store. I would walk in with a vintage ratty leather coat doc martins and floral dresses ( i had a light grunge look ) I was among very high fashion looking staff .Oh I remember and miss thoose days !!

I lived in WV in the mid-90's and would see Isaac at our local wine store frequently located by the Bar Six restaurant. We chatted about his comment. He is so animated and we had a ball discussing the down fall of everyday elegance in society although I defended Marc's collection. Missed those fun times.

I think you missed the major criticism of grunge fashion as well as a major aspect of that time period. Grunge clothes were not what people wore when they were not performing on stage. Grunge clothes were cheap clothes that were all those people could afford. The major criticism of Jacobs' collection was that he took clothes that were cheap and put high price tags on them.

As an ol' Gen-Xer, I remember this collection when it came out and it felt kind of cringe at the time for those of us in the music scene. However, looking at the clothes now, I think it's a very wearable "re-interpretation" of grunge perfect for our current time that I would absolutely wear now. I just wondering if u can cover some information on why Marc Jacobs left from Louis Vuitton and closing down his own Marc by Marc Jacobs line. Marc Jacobs was a success during he's time with French brand Louis Vuitton and he also was well known to his own brand Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs line. My question until now I don't haven't find any clue or info why he left LVMH and why he close his own MMJ. I did read from the press regarding on his statement when he left LVMH with his last show in SS 2014. But the rest of the story remain mystery!

The grunge movement itself hated that runway show because it was anti-fashion on a runway. Marc Jacobs was inspired by popular brands of the time. They saw something they believed was sacred, real, and “for us by us” and saw this as an attack on the movement. Like how the mainstream sorta killed punk by referencing it. As a Rocker myself at age 29, and a lover of fashion, it’s still frowned upon by underground punk & Metal culture to “like fashion” u sorta keep that too yourself.
