What you said about Balenciaga existing digitally is so true to many people. I have zero access to high-end stores and to get something from Balenciaga for example I'd have to travel since shipping will probably take a year and lots of money, and I don't even have a postal thingy. The nearest Balenciaga is 5 countries away in another continent lol

First of all, I'm loving how the pandemic has shifted fashion shows. They're becoming pieces of art in themselves, not just showcases for the actual clothes. LV's fall winter 2022, GCDS's digital show and now this. Just the fact that this show didnt actually happen is crazy. This show made me uncomfortable. The audience, the music, the blemness of it all. It scares me seeing how homogenic everything is getting. That the inspiration for uniqueness is often found online, which then isnt actually unique. The death of subcultures. It all feels very distant and cold and reflects well the way i'm feeling about the world right now. Thank you for this disection of the show. I always geek out about these stuff.

Going to bring up two other youtubers who have made related comments that I agree with and feel fit into this convo well: ThisisAntwon just talked about the internet homogenizing fashion/trends in his most recent video where he responded to a comment saying "techwear lacks creativity" and basically attributes this to social media/internet culture where because we have these subgroups, everyone wants to fit into the subgroup by buying the same items everyone else is wearing. So even though brands like Hamcus exist and are way more interesting and fit into techwear so well, everyone still buys the same acronym and nike acg jackets/pants (at least a first then maybe branch out once they've fit in to the group). I feel like this is true of fashion overall as well and really any subculture, you can categorize "influencers" as their own subculture of "trend chasers" who all need to wear the same or very similar items which then bleeds into the mainstream till you walk into an H&M filled with clones. And then regarding a lack of anti-mainstream subcultures, Anthony Fantano (theneedledrop) did a video a while back replying to a video from Paul Joseph Watson (of Infowars) about his complaint that there is no subculture anymore and he says that that's not really true, the subcultures still do exist, but they exist on the internet in a way that "gives them a seat at the table". True you don't have to go to an underground concert to complain about Springsteen anymore, but there's certainly no shortage of people complaining about springsteen and you can do it in as public or as private a setting as you want on the internet, whether you want to tweet that opinion at Springsteen fans or join a discord/subreddit exclusively for springsteen haters. Those groups are just easier to find now. And the same thing can be said for fashion, where if I tell my friends that I want shoes with tabi toes they're going to think that's weird, but if I mention it online I'll get engagement, agreement, and questions about what colors I want them in. I feel like every week someone is having a conversation about whether or not social media ruined fashion and I think that's almost the wrong question to ask, or at least too broad of a question to ask. I think the question is "for whom did social media ruin fashion?" I think you mentioned in a video a while back how there's a whole group of people who live without ever caring about what they wear, for those people, social media has had 0 effect. Then there's those who care about looking good but have no idea who margiela are, I think if it's ruined fashion for anyone, it's that group of people. The ones who are buying from H&M, Zara, Shein, Fashion Nova, etc. Where they're buying essentially balenciaga and rick owens designs but ripped off and made more accessible but in a way that sheds the uniqueness of those original designers. Then I think there's people like your viewers, for whom social media is a net positive. We now have access to more information, images, footage, etc of the world of fashion that we care about than we ever have before, so it's easier to appreciate it more. And I think (at least for me) social media was kind of a great gateway to move from that trendy fast fashion world into the deeper world we're talking about on channels like this one.

WE THE LAST SUB CULTURE , bliss is the head of it

Yeah i think so too about the subculture part.. They are there but mostly not physical (meaning connected to a physical place) and also the person, who’s meeting someone else through that subculture only get to know that part of the other person, that regards the beliefs of the subculture.. Face to face communication is so much more spontaneous, so that much more information slips through than in a slowly thought through post on Twitter/Reddit.. you get to know the person in front of you much more. I think that’s also the reason, why many people participating in some kind of subculture still have a mainstream facade (buy at h&m/ zara…). The subculture beliefs are only in their head and not as openly presented through fashion etc. than in earlier times. (Side note: h&m for example also sells subculture fashion (like emo style clothes)… is that still subculture then though?

“Then there’s those that care about looking good but have no idea who margiela are,” This will be the next big wave, imo, that asks another big question of all of you. When those displaced people can now easily find and interact with that subculture from their couch while wearing their Snuggie, does the subculture reject their own styles or statement pieces when more people start appreciating those pieces? Or do they stay true and accept that even traditionally non-artistic individuals can find something meaningful to replace their Nordstrom Anniversary Haul? I personally think having more people wear something meaningful is a step in the right direction of becoming a society that can think for themselves.

The audience actually attended the show. They in fact have been precociously styled by Balenciaga making them wear archive looks from the very first season to the collection right before this one. They were asked to act the way they do, including filming the show with phones that were given to them by the house so they couldn’t leak any footage.

The theme of homogenisation among fashion circles reminded me of this quote: “In any period of fashion history, there are always a few brands that best signify the times, brands that those in the know feel they should be wearing. In the nineties, it was Helmut Lang and Margiela, and now it’s this. You wear your Vetements or Balenciaga with Acne shoes and Céline sunglasses, and you’re it - that’s how they function in their fashion minds.” - Demna in an interview with Vestoj journal titled ‘On Authenticity’, 2017

I know this is an old video. But this really taught me to look at fashion differently. Fashion really is commentary from the designer/artist. And whether or not they are being intentional, their work is saying something. Fast fashion is speaking volumes in opposition to things like climate change and conservation. I’m starting my career in art at 30, and this video has really helped me. Thanks Bliss!

As someone who has just begun to learn about the world of fashion in the light that you express, Bliss, it’s incredibly exciting to me to see these kinds of art pieces. The level of detail and intrigue that Demna infused into this show is something I only thought existed in music or “traditional art.” However, this show was eerie to me. As soon as I saw the first second of the first shot, a lot of the concept clicked immediately. The fact that I needed only a second to understand the context and basic commentary shows how scary these things truly are, at least for me, because it’s no longer a weird dystopia that Demna is presenting, it’s actually life. This video taught me to not be afraid to present your ideas, no matter the position you sit in because at least someone out there will feel seen and connect with that idea. As head designer for a mogul in fashion, Demna opened a door with this concept that is so close to critiquing his own employer, at least in my eyes. Wonderful video :)

This video was awesome and very thought provoking. I think it's interesting that while commenting on homogenization Demna has presented a collection that would be hard for anyone to replicate in their own personal style. I might be off on that but the volume and silhouettes of the looks seem extreme or warped in a way. It's interesting to see these points raised within fashion, as I've gotten more into fashion sometimes I wonder what my personal style actually is. Once the technology I use and interact with becomes aware of my interest in fashion I am fed images and videos of clothing and people an algorithm thinks will capture and hold my attention. I think this can lead to an inauthentic experience. Despite the fact that I planted the seed and searched something to do with fashion or liked some ones fit pic, I cannot help but wonder how my path is diverted and influenced by algorithms.

What did I learn? That this topic hit a nerve. It’s not you, it’s my own fear of where we’re headed. While simultaneously I know that what’s meant to be has already been. If you touch it in real life, will the totem have the same weight as in a dream? What about online where I can’t feel it? A bunch of people tweeted some stuff about stuff, and they had an echo chamber of cancel culture and me-too, culture and race and religion and ethics and morals but is the opponent even paying attention? Or maybe that invisible team was tweeting about some other thing and creating and residing in their electronic echo chamber? But, I truly felt affected emotionally by the weight of reading the electronic communication so, was it real? How many taps do I have to experience in my dream to kick to the next level and wake up and feel the hug of my friend? Will they be suddenly be alive in my waking state? Were they ever really there at all? Is that really the sun? Wash, rinse, repeat. Will I care about whether my totem or spinning top continues to spin? Will I even know if I’m there, truly out of the dream? Will my “likes” replace my desire to socialize? I can make it look real pretty in photos but will my loved ones know that I’m quietly dying on the inside? If I own more of “the stuff” will that have made me more valid in the eyes of God? Meh. Who cares, am I right? *Goes back to Instagram to go check my likes, listening to “Ma Vie en Rose”* But… it did make me think “oh, that’s clever” - the concept of homogenization of a “culture” is possible, how what one may have worked years to learn about a certain field of study and the internet makes it possible to know the ins and outs of that skill, rendering the previous generation’s work as useless… a double edged sword…and it made me think, oh my Gosh, remember that? When we didn’t have such convenience?” But, somehow I persist, and I believe you, everything is going to be ok. And it made me think about the differences between that which we value. And who is we? The term “they” comes to mind, big car, house, the expectations set upon us to do “well” and have something to show for it, but, if that’s not what I value, I must be different. But am I? And does it matter? And yes, repackaged by Demna, it does make me uncomfortable because I feel it, and have felt it, but somehow I feel my voice is insignificant. Invisible. Forgettable. And will go unheard. And different means not normal, and that can’t be good, right? But, back to those little “luxuries” to feel a sumptuous fabric, to read poetry written by friends in correspondence, or discover old photos that no one will ever be privy to, to have fresh water, to potentially argue with someone about this, to even be able to comment on this take, that too is a luxury. One I can’t hold in my hand. And I do value it. But, now it’s not in analog format, regardless to whether or not I delete my comment or it gets deleted, it will have been recorded. I’d totally wear the sunglasses though, to avoid people. How was my performance?

As someone who truely is from this internet age. Born in 2002, doesn’t remember a time without KZbin or tumblr, I often find myself questioning just how much of a subculture I actually belong to, if they even exist. I feel that social media algorithms have mastered the notion of feeding you concepts that you already agree with so well that you sort of forget that there’s another voice on another part of the internet. I’m pretty sure many of us can relate to scrolling down the explorer page and seeing the same fits (drkshdw ramones, bb Simon belts, cargo pants) for thousands of posts and thinking that that’s just the mainstream now, what we forget is that that’s just what the algorithms show us, that there’s still a world full of supreme hypebeasts, or Jordan sneaker heads, that probably scroll thru their explorer page and see that type of content. However when I step into the real world I truely feel a universal sense of homogeny with the people I interact with. Maybe it’s because I’m in college but everyone listens to the same music, wears basically the same clothing, and care about the exact same things. And I question just how big of a role the internet plays in their lives. I feel like at its infancy the internet became a bastion for the social outcasts and rejects that couldn’t find human connection offline. While we all use the internet I feel that there’s a group of people that uses it to post their ig posts of them and their friends going to brunch and then laugh at some Daquan memes, and then there’s another group of people that go on Reddit to try and legit check their geobaskets, or go to discord, etc. idk if anyone else can relate but I personally feel like I belong to the group that has more interactions online with people of the same interests than they do in the real world, which can make the internet feel homogenous.

I learnt that the exclusively tight knit clubs, and otherwise more secretive activities youth have been participating in recently may be a result of the internet caused homogeneity. I see me and my peers getting together with specific people for specific things, like talking about philosophy, brainstorming architecture, or going over political observations and theologies, but keeping those experiences limited to offline. It is so purposeful that I wonder if subcultures are being forced to return, but In a way that very few will know about simply because of the way it has had to recover from mass market adoption.

Great upload Bliss. I think one of my favourite point's in Demna's show that you touched on is the homogenization of the luxury market, especially of our symbolic values. I think it gives more context to Demna's "hacking" of Gucci's most iconic symbols of wealth, whereas at surface value it might have appeared more a nod to the counterfeit market. Very glad to have this resource to help understand these things a whole lot better :)

Some random contributions: The scenography etc reminded me of Ben Hur (1959) which utilised painted figures to give the impression of a crowd scene, plus ground-breaking anamorphic techniques (for the 1950s). Also, in the UK for the duration of covid, football (soccer) resumed with similar type figures in the crowd. Demna obviously takes this further, dismantling the role / status of the fashion show audience. Le Brise Glace (Ice Breaker) was a short-lived 1980s French theoretical anarchist magazine (I have copies, but it seems to have disappeared as internet-remembered thing). Not seen that artwork you suggested at the end - great analogy, thank you. UK subcultures of the late 70s / early 80s was my own youth - it certainly evolved through the 80s, gave us something slightly different called street-style / street-wear / street-fashion (delete as appropriate) and by the 1990s had merged with high-end fashion and (via the internet) become obliterated. Baudrillard produced some useful work on fashion. I think his main contribution was to cap off the dead-end of Barthes' impossible task in 'The Fashion System'. Baudrillard's proposal of fashion being an endless interplay of differences that have no meaning (other than being different) is an argument that all but nullifies fashion. I'm not sure that you can segue the idea of something being unaffordable (by virtue of capitalism) or unattainable (by virtue of geography) as part of hyperreality. Yes, Demna's work is 'based' upon Baudrillardian hyperreality, in that it displays signs that refer to other signs ad infinitum, and has no basis in anything of use or exchange. This idea that we engage or encounter it as art is possibly one way of side-stepping this, but it's not strictly a hyperreal engagement. It's a real performance and a real thing. Vinken's short essay on the 'griffe' signals the change in how we understand fashion to a more Baudrillardian system - from a logo advertising a garment to a garment advertising a logo. I feel old watching your film on this show!

I watched the video and the part that stood out the most for me was when you addressed the disappearance of subcultures. You mention that subcultures were a way of escaping what was considered mainstream, and even though nowadays there are small niche groups that try to imitate subcultures it is almost impossible. We are surrounded by images and information, which means that one way or another we know what is happening all around us, even if we want to avoid it.

What I have learned from this, is: That a self-aware fashion industry functions as on of the best platforms for performance art, as i it’s the most upper layer of society, as affordable material goods, and all other layers, as staple of wealth to be longed for to obtain by the viewer. I have learned that value in function and beauty, to me essential to owning any product, are both replaceable for Sign Value. I have learned that Value and wealth are sorta the same inside Sigh Value. I have learned that it is incredibly difficult to use all the right terms in all the right places and meanings, but practice makes perfect:) Thanks for your great analysis!!

Hi, this was definitely eye opening. I did watch this particular Balenciaga video (as I love watching these types of couture shows); I remember feeling uncomfortable watching it and didn’t finish the video. Thank you for the explanation as I’ve really learned something today.

What did I learn? I don't even know where to begin...I need to watch this, and will, several times just to define it, But basically it gave me so much inside into your generation and what you are dealing with on a deeper level other then wanting to buy designer products....something that my generation (I am 69) did not even consider. Bliss I so appreciate your philosophical approach to fashion! It is being changed by the times we live in, just like all of us.Thanks again for an amazing post. xox

Seriously get goosebumps while listening to you talking about fashion. Peeling away layer after layer of meaning and personal associations behind the current Balenciaga show from Marx and Baudrillard to hyperreality to Guido van der Werve (who I didn't know about until now).

First I want to start off by saying this was a great explanation of the show period. I love that you brought up the term "sign value", especially as people try to navigate their way away from the negativity of what has become exclusivity imo. As someone new to fashion, the thing that caught my eye was the brilliance in marketing that went into it. Having the Simpsons produce an episode as the actual "show" and then have merchandise sold of them wearing the looks of the "show" and now you totally breaking down the hyper-reality of what the show actually was. Mind blown. I love it, and I love your exuberance about it. Definitely taught me a lot.

What Demna does best is show us exactly what’s happening, maybe better than we can even see, or understand. He continues to push fashion forward taking us with him on a deep journey that’s challenging, devastating, and inspiring … more than any other designer working. The clothes, sounds, visuals, execution, honesty in presentation are unmatched.

I learned and am continuing to learn that fashion is a fascinating spectacle. As an Art History student, I am discovering infinite overlaps between mediums and ideas that excite me greatly. This show in particular communicates that there is still space ahead to move forward and that ideas of 'contemporary' are also historical and that it is truly impossible to predict what is next so what other option do we have than to manifest it ourselves.

This is such a wonderful exercise of analysis ! So good :) This is always bringing back the mirror to us in my humble opinion where everyone is trying to be different but where being not conform is actually a form of conformism. The pressure for many to be original, present and unique but at the same time replicating ourselves in the approach. Just like this Spider-Man memes pointing at each other. Stuck in our filter bubbles we tend to think that everyone thinks like us when in reality we are also polarized and so scared to look at ourselves mindfully that confirms is actually comfortable.

been following the page for a few months now and a recent patreon supporter. Really enjoyed this video and am awstruck by Demna's philosophical expressions in these past few shows. The confusion he captured between simulation and reality with this show is uncanny. The filming touches on the uneasiness of liminal spaces with the colorless setting. I feel like a jabroni not catching on that the audience are the actual models, it's a fantastic work of art. The accessible pieces like T-shirt/Hoodies and even the shoes (triple S, i realize earlier seasons) are all authentic to modern trend and yet so much larger than life, literally. Is there any further context to why the fitting is so big? Learning from this page how fashion shows are platforms for critical thinking. There's a whole dualistic appeal with those that want to be seen and appreciate the aesthetics of fashion and from what I am learning from this page a community that also appreciates modern philosophical thematic on a deeper plane.

I agree that there's something sort of comforting about the conviction of continuing on despite the enormity of the unforeseen and often calamitous changes all around us and really poorly defined future. We don't know where this is all heading and its easy to despair or cling to the nostalgia of an abstract past. To have all of this expressed through Balenciaga's presentation and the designer makes me really appreciate the medium. This is despite not at all fitting into it (I don't get it on a technical level, I enjoy the act of consuming the material/marketing, nor are the tangible products a thing I can afford). Your facilitation and personal analysis makes it all feel kind of accessible without excessive characterization or interpretation which is a feat. I'm super glad I stumbled into your channel!

I loved this video, it was such an interesting insight into demna’s work. I found that the minimalist approach to the set design and sterile, bleak vibe of the show was such a juxtaposition to the complex and rich themes it was portraying. It almost felt like a unique perspective ON a perspective. Like this would be Demna’s perspective on the idea that our technological future is doomed, but not the fact itself. Similar to that painting of the pipe. The reason for my awkward understanding of this show is because i feel a very strong sensation of denial in a lot of the pieces that are part of this show, and thus i can see how this could be discussing the idea of apocalypse rather than apocalypse itself.

Learnings... that I, as someone that when I was younger was always drawn to subcultures, but never felt at home in just one (tried the punks, ravers, goths, was all of them and therefor didn't end up looking or being like any of them), am actually finding it somewhat comforting to see this happening- the dissolution of subcultures, the bleeding of them into each other, and seeing that in style and fashion and on the streets and in my own life with the people I associate with is something that makes me feel more interconnected with all kinds of humans and lifestyles but somehow also makes me more confused than ever about the world. the Internet really does have us hyper-influenced and certainly changes my lookout on humans and the world so much. good video, brings up many thoughts for sure. also amazing styles on that semi-virtual runway!!

As a novice fashion enthusiast, I've learned that fashion is not just a random expression but it can mean something. It can tell a story, teach a lesson and even leave one wondering more. This collection really made me think about the future of our society. I don't want to be out of touch with reality. As cool and as interesting as hyperreality can be it genuinely scares me but honestly, it's all I know. I was born in 2005 yes I'm not even legal yet and i remember having a youtube addiction as young as 7 years old and i wouldn't even leave my room or talk to anyone. i was so obsessed because everything interesting i see is on the internet. when you talked about people wondering whether they were even living because they saw others being themselves or having those unique styles and expressing it, that really resonated with me because that's exactly how i think. How do i live? To become the same as everyone is that living? If it's not, why isn't it? They look like they are having fun being different should i be different too? even my own questions are about following something instead of being my own and i dont even know how to stop it. I'm not very articulate in expressing my thoughts, feelings, or opinions but this video definitely made me think. so thank you

Like the morning i saw just some first images of it, something changed when I saw my reflection in a shop window and the shapes and fine communication of my clothes felt in dialogue or interrogated by some of the looks in the show and the couture show
