The idea? Yes. The reality? We'll have to wait and see. Unfortunately I don't have much faith we won't end up spending 300 million on "Amorim style players" over the next two years. Only to still not have a suitable squad (for which 2 seasons and 300 million likely isn't enough), lose patience and get a new manager who doesn't want wingbacks or double 10s. Meaning we'd once again have actively sabotaged ourselves and the next manager.

To me it really feels like the domino effect of not having 2 proper Wing backs. Having 2 fullbacks as wingbacks means they stay behind a lot , which makes the back 3 too close to each other, but also makes the 10's drift to the wings more and being so far from each other they will rarely combine which also means the striker is isolated

Have a look at our attack, I was sat at the half way line so had a great view of the system- our wing backs (both of them) were playing behind our centre back line so almost like a a backwards crescent. They were so scared of their opposition being played in behind that it meant they kept dropping back further than our CB’s. This meant in attack when we had the ball with Bruno and he tried to play an early ball out wide to our wing backs they were so far behind the play because they also don’t have the natural instincts to run forward when we win possession, that on a number of occasions Bruno played first time balls and they went to no-one and out of play. The wing backs are a huge problem. They are not fast enough to defend one on one and not instinctive enough to attack when we win possession. It leaves our attack very limited
@Jykobe4913 күн бұрын
This was partly amorims fault, it is also the reason we had a hard time against Southampton. the fullbacks are too deep allowing the opposition to squeeze us when the ball goes to the wings during build-up, then we have to go back. the win against Southampton came when diallo started playing higher and mazraoui took his place out wide, I thought amorim would learn from this. our build-up shape is too flat, there are no options in the middle when the ball goes out wide. even if there are options, there is no space to pass into the middle because the wingbacks have come too deep to collect the ball allowing the opposition to compact the center making us pass the ball back again and again

What I cannot wrap my head around is why is Amad the only player who's performances seemingly are not affected by how the game is going? Whether the game is going well or bad, his attitude, mentality and determination doesn't drop. Even if his dribbles don't come off or his shots aren't landing or he's just having an off day, he keeps running, keeps challenging, and continues to harass his opposing number when that player has the ball. Neither his head nor his confidence drops even when we're trailing and not getting a grip on the match. Can't say the same about many of the other players in the team.

Amorim could make some changes that would help out the defense. He could play more compact like we did against Liverpool and Arsenal. That should help our defense but could lead to lots of draws as we just don't have a consistent way to score if the other team doesn't leave is openings for fast counters. We'd probably grind out more points this season but remain as far as ever from really competing for the league. As crazy as EtH's formations seemed, they do make some sense now. The team just doesn't seem to have the players to consistently fight for midfield control (just not enough pace overall), so EtH seemed to split the team into disconnected attacking and defending halves to have some goal threat while trying to mitigate the opponent's high value chances (although at the cost of giving up a ton of overall chances).

Defense and attacks are weak. I know Amorim has had success in the Liga Primeira with his tactics and some success in the Champions League too, but the Premier League is a different animal. Even Manchester City, which uses similar tactics, isn't doing well in the PL. The PL has adapted to these tactics and many clubs know how to overcome these tactics, and so they no longer work well. It is the same with Xavi's tactics for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. They no longer are that effective. I think Amorim has to face and address these issues. As I have said all along - sit back to attack, and play possession to defend. It sounds counterintuitive but it's highly effective, and it's the reason why Liverpool is at the top of the table, and Nottingham Forest is not far behind. Both these teams use these tactics. Why do these tactics work? 1) Sitting back allows counterattacks to happen. When the opposition are flocking in your half and their attack fails, it gives an opportunity to counterattack. That is the only situation when you can do a counterattack - when the opposition are crowded in your half and empty in their half. Even poor scorers can score decently in counterattacks. Counterattacks means the opposition's half is relatively unguarded. That's when attacks should happen. It does mean you have to defend your half well, but you can do that when you have enough bodies in your third. Hence, the need to sit back and build a wall in your third. You are luring the opposition to leave their own half. It is a "ruse" in other words. You do this when you need goals. That means you can't do high pressing. Mid-pressing is the highest you can do. You must have a sufficient number of bodies in your half at all times, and they should be ready to track back and occupy the final third at a moment's notice and form that dense block. This is the key to defending when you need goals. Another advantage of this tactic is that you don't require elite defenders. Defense relies on numbers, so even poor defenders can do the job well. Also, you can even have an average goalkeeper and you will still have low GA. You also don't need to have an expert defensive midfielder. You are not trying to stop the attacks in the midfield so much as stopping the attacks in the final third. Such tactics LEVEL the playing field, so that even a B-grade squad can do well in the league - see Nottingham Forest, which is not full of "star players". 2) Sitting back means you are always protecting your goal. Even while your players are doing the counterattack, you keep most of your players in your half, ready to protect the goal in case the counterattack fails and you are on the defensive again. Trying to score goals against a team that sits back is a nightmare for the attacking team. You can try all sorts of tricky approaches but as you can see in some games, it's hard to get the ball into the net when there are 11 bodies in front of the goal defending it. Possession-focused teams have this problem all the time. It's one of the reasons why Manchester City is not doing well these days. It takes individual brilliance to score goals in their case, such as when Guardiol does a worldie and scores from outside the box. However, this sort of thing you cannot depend on to happen in every game. And it's also the reason why Amorim's Man Utd is having trouble scoring goals. Even when they win games, they do not score many goals. They count on individual brilliance - eg. Amad's ability - to score goals. They do not score goals EASILY, such as Brighton was doing in this match, which is a problem. Amorim had an absolute machine in Gyokeres in Sporting, but a manager does not always have such a player available to them. And to be fair, Sporting does not play in a top league, and the refereeing culture there is different to the PL's as well. 3) When you don't need goals and are only trying to protect your goal advantage is when you play possession football. The difference with Amorim's possession football is that you play SAFE possession football. You are not trying to score. You are just trying to keep the ball from being in the opposition's control ... and very importantly, you are trying to exhaust the opposition physically and frustrate them mentally. You are playing a psychological game with this possession football. You pass the ball safely and slowly, mostly in your half, allowing your own players to relax and have a rest. The players can recover during this time while they are defending the goal and protecting the scoreline. In the meantime, the opposition are running around frantically chasing the ball. So, in other words, Amorim is doing the OPPOSITE of what he should be doing in the Premier League. 1) He is playing slow possession football to attack the goal, which allows the defence to build that low defensive block. 2) He is leaving lots of space behind in their half by doing pressing to defend and by putting a lot of players in the opposition's half to attack. He depends too much on individual brilliance to achieve goals and defend against attacks. De Ligt has to practically act as a goalkeeper and slide into his own goal to stop goals by the opposition. The Manchester Utd goals in the Liverpool game and the Southampton game were not normal goals. They were not easy goals by any means. They required moments of individual brilliance (by Licha, Amad, Bruno) to happen. These tactics place too much stress on players, and they leave the pitch exhausted and dispirited after losing a game such as the Brighton one.
@thebiglebrowski36953 күн бұрын
I will keep saying it but the problem is that the players aren't good enough. The most important thing is putting 11 players out on the pitch who are better than the 11 players that the opponent puts on the pitch. Everything else is secondary. Our recruitment has been woeful. We spent 615m on 17 players and the team is significantly worse than where it started. We actually did the open heart surgery that Rangnick talked about. The problem is that we butchered it and just made things worse. Now the patient is dying on the operating table and Amorim has been called in to try and save the day but hasn't been given the tools to do it. We need a goalkeeper who can make basic saves. We need CBs that are able to run. We need wingbacks in general. We need DMs who can actually pass forwards. We need 10s who are able to create good quality chances. We need a striker who can finish the chances that are created. At the moment we have none of those things. There were two players on the pitch against Brighton who deserve to wear the shirt. Bruno and Amad. That's it.

how can we actually say Amorim needs to do more when you point out so many of player based mistakes. no intensity, passive, being afraid to press after being outrunned. if this are all player based mistakes, how are we directing this on the manager, when its the players on the field that dont do the basics? how does this team goes from intensity press against City arsenal and liverpool, to then relax against southampton and Brighton? and we are saying we need more from the manager? i said it already and say it again, this is a player profile issue and not a system issue. i agree with your analyses of the game, just dont agree on the part that Amorim needs to do more. Amad has to play RWB... it's no coincidence all our good moments this season are from him coming in from the width.. he needs an intelligent CAM to play inside him to link up and create space for him. I think Zirkzee can do that role. I also think Bruno's best position in this team is in the double pivot next to Ugarte. The sheer workrate and mentality of Bruno is vital in that part of the pitch where we will more often than not be outnumbered. Also, his ability to progress the ball/hold on to it in that position is better than anyone else's in our squad. I'm not sure what's wrong with Mainoo, but he seems to have dropped off in terms of effort and application. Misplaced passes & not running back quickly enough has become a problem for him.. maybe he needs dropping to give him that edge back again. He should start working on something new idea or tactics or any approach to develop the team fighting spirit, within the existing squad. He cannot simply blame the individual or squad or blaming for lack of new signing. He cannot stick to 3-4-3 all the time. He should know that he cannot simply stick to his current tactics, but he should develop a backup idea, or tactics based on the current squad. Even SAF always applying different tactics to solve their weaknesses, to counter the opponent and come with the good result. It's time for RA to create backup tactics such as 4-3-3, 4-3-2-1, 4-5-1, 4-2-2-2 or something else to counter the lack of squad depth.

He should have played yoro on the right and martinez on the left. The system requires athleticism for the L & R CB, something De Ligt just doesn't have. Not a bad pure CB but i think Amorim trusts Macquire on the ball there more. But realistically the number of positions we need replaced for Amorim's system will take multiple transfer windows. We're talking 2 Wing Backs, a midfielder alongside Ugarte (Mainoo doesn't have the strength or legs to play the position at his age but will come into it nicely), one or two CAM and a ST that actually scores (I like Holjund, but he's so young. None of the big strikers were banging it in at his age).

The problem with this defending system is that Maguire on the center should work like a 6, defending and attacking, but he doesnt have the velocity, the pace to coup with the position needs: quick decisions if should shift position to limit offside line or should make the run to follow the attacker, after a long ball;, bring the ball forward as a DM, cover the space left by the other defenders to recover the balls in the open space before the attacker. The 1st Brighton goal, you can see Maguire was further back the defensive line, which allowed for no-offside, and he couldn't even coup with the pace of the 2nd attacker coming from the right, who scored. When the defending lines are closer to each other, his deficiencies are masked. Once Man United presses hard forward, the lines become far apart, and the 1st defending line has no quality to coup with the pressure and occupy the spaces, and cover their teammates pressing forward. That's when his deficiencies come to surface. Maguire is obviously not suited to play. We can see that from his lack of technical ability with ball and without. Any coach would probably not even consider him as a sub, considering Man United has plenty more centerbacks. Renewing his contract year after year and the fact Amorim says Maguire is suitable for the position and a leader in team, is the most intriguing thing to me about Man United, and that should be the reason explaining what should be happening in the backstage at Man United. Playing with 3 centerbacks that dont fill the midfield, living a gap when Ugarte and Mainoo press foward, and do not participate in the attack, with exceptions such as the Martinez goal, will always be a disadvantage compared to a 4-3-3 with a 6 DM. It always seems like a team of 10 attacking instead of 11. You can see that Amorim's lineup compared to Ten Hag's for example, is just a replace of a winger such as Rashford or Garnacho for a center-back. With Fernandes trying to be a winger and an attacking midfield at same time to coup with the lack of a man there. No wonder this Man United is worse than Ten Hag's 4-3-3. And Ruben Amorim will sooner or later understand that in his career. I am pretty sure he will eventually change to a 4-3-3 later in his career, with a 6 DM instead of a centerback. He should have known better. He played under Jorge Jesus, and knows Mourinho's systems. He knows even with a 4-3-3 you can have 2 lines of 5 defending, like he did at Chelsea. and having a 6 DM is better for attacking positioning and to cover spaces from counterattacks, instead of having a full line of 3 defenders. I am pretty sure Sporting would have played even better under a 4-3-3, like it is playing more or less right now in a 4-4-2 / 4-2-3-1. And it didnt take ages to change from a 3-4-3 to a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. They started winning from match 1 against the biggest teams after Amorim left. So, there's no excuses for Man United. After almost two months with the team, they had another full week to prepare against Southampton,, the lowest ranking team ,and Man United performance was the worst ever. There's really no excuses. Either you understand you are using a system used mostly only by counterattacking teams, and you want Man United to have 20% possession the entire game and expect Amad to run on a counter and score everytime they give him space to run, or you hold your balls and say we are Man United and we want 70% possession every game and press hard every minute everytime you dont have the ball, and you stick with a 2-centerback system with a 6 DM. Because even when Man United presses forward, they lack man in the midfield, and that's always why the opponent can get rid of the pressure. There's always a man left to cover the midfield space. once the the opponent free man gets the ball, he has space to view the game, carry ball forward and lines of passes to the attackers, with Man United weakened by a 3 defender line with slower centerbacks than opponent wingers. Then they just long ball to the attacker and Lisandro or Maguire or Yoro or Mazraoui cannot run faster. It is so obvious, it is hard to miss. There shouldnt be a reason to maintain a 3 defensive centerback line, with the entire time pressing forward near the opponent goalkeeper, even if they have 2 opponent attackers near the defensive line, because the ball should be recovered further before it can reach the opponent attackers, if the entire team presses all spaces, but that's what Man United isn't doing, so the opponent almost always comes out of the pressure and is then in advantage against the slower defenders.

The side defenders jumping on forwards is the inherent risk of this system and the space they leave is so easy to exploit. And it is getting exploited because players are still getting used to it. At this point in time they have to trust each other. 1. Maguire and onana should push up when we are pressing to take out that pass in behind. 2. De ligt and yoro shouldn't hesitate when jumping into midfield. They should trust yoro and dalot to do their jobs. If they don't well it's their problem.
@iwantgoals15663 күн бұрын
And that’s just the defence. The midfield I think has been poor all season. Of course the defence being bad caused some issues for our midfield and we were overloaded. But man our midfield sucks. We’ve got square pegs in round holes, we’ve got a lot of our midfielders looking flat footed like they’re incapable of receiving the ball on the half turn. I saw a lot of sloppy passes that kept gifting Brighton possession. We can barely string a sequence of one touch passes together. It’s just not sharp and athletic enough. That destroys our tempo and we can’t build any momentum.
@CoconutJewce3 күн бұрын
I back Amorim more than any player but him/his team need to realize that playing both Dalot and Maz doesn't work. We consistently score less and concede more despite having 5 defenders and a DM. Dalot can get forward on the left but it doesn't end in anything, while Maz doesnt get forward on the right. If anything, switch them so Dalot can at least be useful with his right foot, or play Amad at the RWB and play anybody else in the R10. The players deserve the bulk of the blame but Amorim could set the team up better in his 343, imo.

I always say that if you don't have time to give all your detailed instructions to your players, then you need a simpler system. one who doesn't need so much understanding. I am glad that amorim may have simplified some things that led us to good derby results and I get it that maybe he wants to test his player's understanding on his actual system against weaker sides such as soton and brighton, however I really hope that he starts prioritizing a win instead of his system. Onana definitely makes these mistakes too frequently, but the comments I've already seen made about him are fucking embarrassing and shows the state our fanbase are in rn. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have won the previous game against Southampton, even with Amad's hattrick. Of course, Amad got all the credit, but we easily would've conceded 3/4 goals if not more if it wasn't for Onana's brilliant goalkeeping. People have already forgotten about that, and the countless other games he's done that in, and points that he's saved us. The players are definitely largely to blame, as has been the case for the previous few managers, but Amorim is certainly not helping himself. Seeing the way Mazraoui, Dalot, and Mainoo are playing and not doing anything about it is just mind blowing. Also changing from a back 3 at Sporting to a clear back 5 now after saying he won't change his system. And there's certainly more to it than this. Sacking Ten Hag nearing the end of his rebuild was a huge mistake.
@coalfacechris13362 күн бұрын
Agree mate. Onana is being peppered with shots, and how can his confidence be anything but shot when the system of ETH's and now Rubin's just hang him out to dry. But will go one step further - Man U fans are most fickle and embarrassing at times - the team quality is bottom half, and it shows. Why expect any more from them? Go back to the sides we had with LVG, to JM, and even OGS - they would wipe the floor with this current squad. None of them would get a game in the top 6 clubs!
@oscarjenkins75052 күн бұрын
@coalfacechris1336 Spot on. Our current fanbase is absolutely embarrassing. Just saw a poll of around 90% of people saying Bayindir should start next game. After Onana absolutely saving us all season (and most of last season), and even Bayindir himself having a shocker the game before his previous. Such ridiculously short term memories. The fact that the squads under those managers were poor but I still completely agree with your point goes to show how awful our squad is atm. Except Amad. He's quality.

I think players not "getting it" has to do less with them being able to grasp it and a lot more with not trusting it works. To convince a player to do something they have to try it and it works well enough from the start that they decide they want to do more. Ten Hag never intended for his backline to be so disconnected. He never managed to convince them that stepping up is a good idea. It doesn't matter if it's theoretically correct. We wish they would press us less and let us have possession, but they won't do that if we're not a threat without the ball. Chicken or egg question. I don't think the players are too used to counter attacking football. I think they're not good even at that so they're not ready to attack with the ball yet. A team like Brighton can hit you either way. They can draw you in and effectively play long without hoofing it blindly and they can break you down with possession.
