During the war, the bread distributed was limited and people had to wait in lines with papers in Turkey. It is said a young man in the line told the Pasha, "my Pasha, you have left us without breads!" angrily, So Ismet Pasha replied him "Yes, I left you without breads, but not without fathers." The conditions were bad, but anything was way better than going to war. I salute you my Pasha!

Ismet Inonu did the right thing, even if Axis won the war, Hitler probably would betray Italy and Turkey due for Hitler's crazy ideology and his ''Lebensraum''
@TheJohnterry16
@TheJohnterry16 3 жыл бұрын
@@zzzzzzzx2866 The German concept of Lebensraum (German pronunciation: [ˈleːbənsˌʁaʊm] (About this soundlisten), "living space") comprises policies and practices of settler colonialism which proliferated in Germany from the 1890s to the 1940s. And then, Soviets won the war, but they did the same thing; Soviet Lebensraum. They did ethnic cleansing, settled Russians to Crimea, Caucasia, Siberia. They exiled Circassians from Caucasia to Turkey, half of them died during the journey. They exiled Ahıska Turks from Georgia to Central Asia, they carried by bovine wagons which is far from humane conditions and most of them has died. They exiled Crimean Tatars, also they massacred Nogai people even though they fought together with soviets. Soldiers came back to home but their people was gone. Soviet empire was worst as much as Nazis.

Actually you know what Germany could have won with Turkish help. They can move into Middle East as apparently Hitler was eager for oil supply. They can also move through Middle East and win the African campaign from another front. They also would have enough oil so they don’t even need caucuses. Actually they are more likely to join axis if they it wasn’t the allies winning.

All they know or see is their lust desires fames and money! and for that they destroy the country and neglect the future of the nation and people! I'm glad Turkey is on the right truck! Long live Ismet Pasha, you saved our country from any unnecessary bloodshed. One of my grandgrandfather were fought at Yemen under Ottoman banner, when our army lost the battle against the enemy, he was taken as prisoner of war and after 15 year of suffering he turned his country. One of my grandgrandfather lost his life at the defence of Palestine, also he was fought at battle of Gallipoli and Megiddo. My grandfather he was born and raised without father and he was fought many battles under your command. We are the sons of them, who fought against enemy for defence of motherland, we fought many, lost many lives, we suffered, but never turned ourselves back. From my perspective, neutrality policy saved millions life. Thats why, as a Turk, always grateful to ones who fought for independence like you.

In WW1 my grandfather's uncles went to war in every direction. One of them went to Gallipoli, other one went to Galicia, other one to Suez Canal front and the last one to Russian front. None of them returned. Only my grandfathers father stayed back because he was young but after WW1, War of Independence started and he went that war he fought in multiple fronts and wounded several times. And my grandfather went to military service just before WW2 started. Back on those days military service was 2 years but when the war started, he couldn't came back from Russian front he stayed there in total of 4 years. When he came back home he couldn't find his wife (he was just married before going military service) she had died because of illness after shortly my grandfather went to serve for his country. But he always remembered those days and said "We were neutral but we have waited Nazis or Soviets can attack anytime. Thanks to Inonu I didn't see any war like my elders."

A page from history: 1941 summer. Hitler invaded Balkans and German army was on the doorstep of Thrace. İnönü was in Yalova and was very nervous like every other politican in the parliament about a certain dilemma: "Will Hitler go north and invade Soviet Union or will he go south over Turkey?". Intelligence was working very hard to figure this out evaluating troop movements but nothing was certain. In the morning June 22 his aide-de-camp rushed into his bedroom and awakened him: " Germans started an offensive against Russia!" Inonu straigtened up from his bed and bursted into laughter saying."He did it!!" He was certain that while figthing with Soviets, Germans could not afford to open another front in Anatolia.

If they had the choice, i am sure most of them if not all of them, would've chosen turkey's path of neutrality. So trust me it's not some insane "play" and strategic thinking that left turkey out of the war.. Look at this bad luck of ours, that great genius of our era was granted to the Turkish nation. " D. He replied that, the most valuable and interesting leader in the world was the President of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk." Franklin D. The sincere tears that people from all classes have shed, are nothing more then the true reflection of this great man - the Father of the modern Turkey. The sincere tears shed after him by all classes of people is nothing other than an appropriate manifestation to this great hero and modern Turkey's Ata. " Winston CHURCHILL, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom) ------------------------- "Mustafa Kemal was not a socialist. But it can be perceived that he is a good organizer, with great understanding, progressive, with good thoughts and an intelligent leader. He is carrying out a war of independence against those plunderers. I am believing that he will break the pride of the imperialists and that he will beat the Sultan together with his friends. " Vladimir llyich LENIN, Leader of the Russian Revolution --------------------- "Atatürk was one of the greatest statesman of everyone who has lived and died throughout history. Today, Turkish history even more than ever is inseparable from Western and European history. Atatürk's efforts in this direction were not left without results. The friendship between our countries that has surpassed hundreds of years, has formed the foundation for this development. " Charles de GAULLE, President of France -------------------------------- "In the life of a nation it is very seldom that changes to such a radical degree were carried out in such a short period of time... For everyone looking for a quick answer: Turkish Perspective: Still recovering from the Independence War, building up the country, opening factories industrializing, male population is low, so war is out of the question.Relationship between Turkey and Germany was, fine, but Germany's Ally Italy had claims on Turkey and had Hostile Relations with Turkey. Also, Turkey did not join the war to profit from Germany, they declared the war just to gain more, lets say recognition of their existance, from other nations. German Perspective: They cannot invade like they invaded Balkans, because Turkey is %90 mountains, also Turkish Soldiers tricked some Germans near their border by giving them the best Food they could find, showing them their Artillery (actually pipes), and showing them their largest military camps.Germans going back to their country told this to their comrades. Some say that Germans were going to war with Turkey before they started to lose on the Eastern Front. British/American Perspective: I will cut this one short, Britain wanted Turkey to join because they wanted to hit "Europe's soft underbelly" like they did in sicily, from the balkans.USA did not want Turkey to join. Hope I saved your time.

@@No-xh1jv If You Are Asking Why They Didn't Really Fight Turkey in Turkish War of Independence: 1. Bitterness towards Entente, "Vittoria Mutilata/Mutilated Victory", Basically Allies promised a lot of Land to Italy with Treaty of London (Mainly in Yugoslavia and Antalya/Mediterranean parts of Turkey), and didn't give Italy the promised lands afterwards. Fuelling mistrust and infighting with Entente. 2. World was changing and so was Italy, it is not free to occupy territory, it's pretty costly, especially if there is fierce resistance in that territory. 3. Generally it wasn't worth it, and just like how Soviets helped Turkey just to mess with the business of Entente Powers, Italy also wanted to mess with Entente Powers. They didn't directly aid Turkey with weapons like the Soviets, but some historians say they left behind their equipment on purpose.

@@No-xh1jv If you are asking why they didn't invade Turkey in WW2: 1- Turkey is really mountainous. 2- Ataturk had the full support of the people, I do not mean politically, of course Turkey was divided between traditionalists and modernists, just like today; I mean more like "United under Ataturk against foreigners!" There was once an incident between Ataturk and Italian Ambassador, Italian Ambassador kept talking about Antalya and Ataturk told him to hold it for 10 minutes. Got into his changing room, wore his Field Marshal Uniform and said, please, continue. 3- Italian-Turkish relations were bad at the time, sure, but German-Turkish relations were fine. So, Italy attacking Turkey would push Turkey into the arms of the Allies, which is not something Germany wants, obviously. 4- Turkish military used a lot of deception tactics. For example, they treated injured German and Italian soldiers at Edirne (Closest city to Bulgaria and Greece), the soldiers would be fed very well with a lot of beef, chicken etc. to give a fake sense of "richness" and German/Italian soldiers would be taken for tours around the camp on purpose. Turkish military would paint PIPES to make them look like artillery, and show these "artilleries" from afar on those camp tours. So after healing, the Italian and German troops would tell what they saw to their superiors. Obviously they'd say stuff like "Oh they are eating very well! They have so many artilleries!"

The Allies returned the Hatay Protectorate to Turkey in 1938 on condition of neutrality. Hatay was even a separate Turkish country for a short time until it was annexed to Turkey by a referendum. It was certain from the start that Turkey would not take part in the world war. The non-attack pact with Germany was signed in order not to suffer any military losses. Thanks to its neutrality, Turkey was able to recover from the First World War and rise to become a regional power. Ataturk died 1 year before the world war, but he had seen this war coming and negotiated with the allies the annexation of the Hatay protectorate to Turkey. In return, Ataturk promised a neutral stance, which Ismet Inönü kept after Ataturk's death.

Turkey didn't sell only chromium, also sold grain, meat etc as i know. And not only to Germany but to both sides. And one of the main reasons of Turkey was neutral is newly established republic needed to focus on development economically and militarily and it was too difficult to defend against one of the sides of the war because Turkish Army was weak against highly equiped armies participated in WW2. And most of the trade with Germany was actually strategic to develop infrustructure in Turkey, for example, they gave us materials to build few factories in exchange of the trade. When Churchill met with İnönü for convincing him to join the war on side of Allies, he offered to give us an air fleet smaller than his own guard fleet. Germans offered to give us Dodanese Islands which were under Italian rule, and they asked us to join the war on their side. We even tried to build a defensive line against Germans on Trace, similar to Maginot Line, to protect İstanbul. But İstanbul was full with wooden structures and an air strike could burn the whole city easily.

"Hunger, disasters etc..." and i want to add something about spain that you mentioned as if we were like spain. Not exactly because spain was managed by Franco in dictatorship. We had a big loss in the World War 1. We have lost most of our land. Then we established the republic with our war of liberation. The right choice was not to enter the World War 2. Turkey is in an extremely valuable position geographically. Joining the Axis would've meant German forces could invade the Middle East the the Caucasus region from the south, while joining the Allies would've meant the Allies could launch a major invasion of the Balkans and knocking Bulgaria and Romania out fairly quickly. But it also meant that Turkey may have become a battlefield as Axis and Allied forces rushed in to achieve their goals. Certainly neither Britain or Germany would have waited for the other side to build their presence in Turkey and would've invaded before an adequate defense could be prepared. I can't help but wonder if Germany had invaded Turkey and the Middle East instead of the Soviet Union, how things would've played out.

Germany lost because it was fighting on more than one front. In fact, Hitler was going to invade Turkey as well. However, because of the mountainous and rugged terrain of Turkey, he first attacked the Soviets, whose terrain was flat. But if the Soviet invasion had been successful, he would have attacked Turkey. Because he had prepared the necessary logistics for Turkey. But if Hitler had attacked Turkey before the Soviets, Germany would have been greatly weakened. Because the difficult terrain of Turkey is not suitable for conducting Operation Lightning. Even if he had managed to invade Turkey, he would have been defeated before he could attack the Soviets. Or even if he attacked, he would be defeated in less time.

@@saguntum-iberian-greekkons7014 the Russians always knew about the importance of the Turkish straights for russian naval interests. After all, whoever controls the turkish straights can control Russian ships from the most important russian naval bases. turkey tried to settle this issue with the montreaux conventions which even today in the Ukrainian War has great importance. in the early 50s the soviets even gave an ultimatum to turkey to have joint control over the straights and allowed for russian troops to be permanently stationed there. This was the reason why Turkey joined Nato and i wish all of Romania, Bulgaria, Jugoslavia, Greece and Turkey wouldnt have alligned with either the west or the axis, but instead went into a neutral defensive union, maybe that could have saved the balkans from a) the invasion by the axis/nazis or b) (for all but greece and turkey) saved them from later soviet control but thats only speculations from my side, but i think maybe this could have lead to the balkans having remained as neutral and safe as turkey was thanks to inönü.
