Showing the problems is reality tv, content, whatever. It shows those that dream of this life that it's not just paradise, it's work. Lots of work. Worth it, but still lots of work. More kids, more problems. More land, more problems. More animals, more problems. More blessings, more problems. Maybe problems isn't the right word. It can be called challenges. Y'all are doing great! Hope y'all enjoy your break.

I totally agree that there will be things that go wrong, when you have several variables in the mix of doing anything. I still think that some of those recurring problems could be minimized with some improvements to the farm. Animals getting out due to gates left open, or electric fence not being turned on…a permanent fence system would alleviate the electric fence, unless you go with a wired fence, which may need electric anyway. But a more structured fence would make some of those problems go away. The watering is also one of your constant problems. Between broken hoses, frozen lines, it’s a constant repair job. As with any job, there must be a constant analyzing of what works and what doesn’t, and then take what doesn’t, and improve. Yes we all make those mistakes. It doesn’t matter who you are. I find myself looking for better ways to do my job, and for the most part I have solved many issues that keep me from repeating those things that don’t work efficiently. I think your content would be just as interesting, even without those issues. I’m sure you guys have plenty of interesting things to share with us in your every day life. Trust me, your life is more interesting than most! ❤

Is it just me or everyday they seem to have the same issues. Their friend, Jason from Sow The Land has chicken and pigs too but his chores every day are so much calmer and smoother than the Rhodes. When you have animals or livestock you are always going to have problems that come up. My Mom & stepdad had a farm and he was always outside working on something that needed fixed. It's hard work. You are outside in all weather 365 days a year. It's a part of having a homestead, farm, ranch etc. I don't miss going outside in the winter months getting firewood, watering the livestock and shoveling manure. Yes we had to shovel it out of the barns. He put it in the manure spreader and put it in the garden. That was the fertilizer & they always had vegetables. Thanks for showing all the problems you have because ppl would think it was easy having a homestead if you didn't. This way if they want to have one then they know what to expect. Anyway thanks for sharing everything with us! Hope you guys have a great time on vacation! Everyone needs a reset and to rest.

I watched a video today where the farmer said that different people HAND milking a cow, causes mastitis, because of the differing pressures and style of them milking. He said that is why machine milking has less instances of mastitis. Don't know that I agree with that last bit, but it sort of makes sense about the changes in milkers.. We run solely on rain water totes.. Hubby unplugged the tank heater.... we were without ANY water except barn tank water, for a full week, till I discovered his 'crime' while attempting to install a new heater. Took 2 days to defrost completely for me to get water.. yesterday.

Justin, why don't you have permanent fences up. You have lived their long enough to know where your pastures are always located. You could just have gates and entrances to where you could still move your cows when you need to move them. Seems like you could save yourself a lot of that temporary fence moving. Could you explain why you don't have permanent fencing.
@WinsomeWinslet8 сағат бұрын
I've wondered that when I watch them move all those electrical fences.
@patriotmama7 сағат бұрын
I agree. We move our animals every other day to different pasture, cows, goats, and we have permanent fences w/gates. They know when we open that gate where they need to go. We also have buried water lines. We live in central Il and have to have them buried 3 ft. to keep from freezing. He wouldn't have to go but about a foot in the ground, a series of frost free hydrants and he would not have to worry about freezing water every single day and fixing all the splits in hoses, trying to find tools/parts to fix them all the time. Time is efficiency and they do kill so much time doing these things every day. Infrastructure was the first thing we put into place over 40 years ago when we started. The hurricane, they could not help, but, organization/infrastructure is key to being efficient.

There is always a reason to put the things back after you use them. Think if the city didn’t connect your water, electric, gas, sewer - utilities once it gets fixed. A pre/post trip in a vehicle…. Preventative Maintenance ….there are a lot of examples of this lesson in life, it’s the small things that make a big difference and save money and help you and your animals and homestead thrive. 🙌

@portialancaster344211 сағат бұрын
I don't think the issue is that you have problems, we all do. It's that some of these problems might be fixed by better systems. Your gravity watering system needs regular maintenance and checking, especially at its source. Don't wait until there is a problem before you check the filters, etc. And have spare parts on hand. Same goes for the various fuels used. You should never run out of fuel if checking the levels is on a scheduled check list. There's vehicle maintenance as well. Not my wheelhouse but I'm think spare parts, The animals getting out, well, good luck with that. They're animals, bless their hearts. Maybe you should look into getting those cattle watering troughs up off the ground a few feet. I know everyone who works with you knows about these things but, it's sometime better to assign the maintenance tasks to one person per problem area. That way it gets done and the assignee gets a sense of ownership and the pleasure of a job well-done. You've come so far and inspired so many people, not just farm folk. Thank you.

Justin horses do get blankets for the cold
@maddydayton229410 сағат бұрын
Eh not necessarily. I’ve had horses my whole life and only have ever made the choice if they’re in stalls. When in pasture or large paddocks, blankets can tend to cause more harm than good. Wild weather changes can cause overheating if not taken off in time. And more so I’ve had many horses get stuck in wire and such due to blankets. It’s been 13 years since I’ve thrown a blanket on one of my horses and I live in Wyoming! Just thought I’d share this!! Horses like the majority of animals will put on a coat in the winter that absolutely keeps them warm enough. Kind of like chickens I do not and never will give them extra light/ heat in the winter. I have everything they need to stay dry and warm and if they want to take time off laying eggs for a month or two in the winter then I let them 😁
@pattyleifСағат бұрын
Horses coats are well suited for winter weather…thick coats with hair that stands upright, hollow cores that help insulate them,snow rests on top forming another insulating layer. Do not have wind chill as no exposed skin and blankets flatten the hair and lose the loft that insulates them. Only time a blanket is called for is if temps drop to -40F. Providing extra hay is all they really need as digestion produces tons of bodily heat. Live at 9400’ in Colorado and my guys are happy as clams in sub zero temperatures

We have a small cattle ranch on 60 acres of irrigated pasture. If something gets broken ,lost, misplaced, this is the why! Prevented measures aren’t taken! A schedule for maintenance is not in place. And of course things will break!!! If there isn’t a designated location for items to be stored goes without saying. Labeling items such as plugged in extension cords might help them from being unplugged Securing them helps! If the animals are getting in the troth a barrier by making a roof, so they can’t jump in but their head fits would help. Take a month off from videoing. You can not be efficient on a farm when your focus is divided between the job at hand and making a video. I’ve been telling my husband for years to slow down, and to make schedules. That’s why things are lost and broken. I thing my point has been made And just know this is coming from a GreatGrandma ! 😊

Can't we use some tecknology to help monitor the condition of fences? Can't Premier One produce an indicator light to sit atop one of the corner posts so that there is visual cue from a distrance that the power is on?. With a pair of binoculars, one could survey the fencing status. Or perhaps a notification on a phone app. Back in a minute, I gotta run to the patent office....

@Kienna-tn7yj13 сағат бұрын
If you want the pump more permanent once your bank is stabilized you can make a small insulated house the size of an out house or your preference and that can reduce your chances of the pump not starting on cold days.

Hi Justin. Yes. Things always happen. People who don't have things ever go wrong.... They aren't living on a farm . For those comparing you to other farmer/ creators... They just don't get it. Every life is different. Just because I don't have the same problems in my life doesn't mean you wouldn't in my life. It's a true lack of understanding on their part that there are differences. We all have days where nothing seems to go right whether we did all the right things or not. We often forget things when we aren't going through them. The REASON we appreciate your showing what isnt working is that no one has a perfect life all the time. Knowing you are real is comforting. Thanks for being real.
