The chain plate could be used as a collapsible bow sprit where the anchor chain runs out over the end. Then fold the chain plate back up toward the boat to make the boat a little shorter thus easier to maneuver in tight places. Just a thought!

I can understand why folks questioning the carbon chain plates, because it is something they not use to seeing. As a retired naval architect / professional engineer I know they are plenty strong; the only chance of failure would be in the glue line or secondary bonding. Given the vacuum bagging and prep work that Matt does this is highly unlikely to fail.

In the final analysis, it still all comes down to the strength of the glue bond between the fiberglass layers, the new fiberglass and the original hull skins and the ring frames, and between the CF chain plates and the new fiberglass. As far as I can see there is no continuous fiber reinforcement between the shrouds and the hull or ring frames so it all comes down the the strength of the glue bond, primarily the bond around the chain plates. At this point what's done is done so only time will tell if Evan is right. I am reassured by the history of use of similar CF chain plates in race boats, presumably without notable failures, and the fact that Duracell's seem to be substantially over built. Here's hoping we are all right. Time to move on.

In the movie Trainspotting, there is a sequence that would be shown every time the characters would use drugs. An idea for pumping and mixing is to make a drag-and-drop sequence you can use to convey this and use it as a transition into whatever comes next. You kinda already do that, but not as aggressively as the movie sequence from trainspotting. Nice editing though. The proof is in that you can take a boring process and make it interesting to someone like me, who doesn't even like boats.

You have probably already layed up the other side, but I was thinking it was the over head portion of the layup that was the problem as it was too heavy with resin to stick, but the side portion could be pre-wetted to save some time, and the over head portion of the same sheet could be wetted in place as you already do. Love the " cat scan ".

I’ll never refer to myself as an “Expert” in any form… An “Ex” is a has been!!! A “Spert” is a drip under pressure…. I’m 66 and would like to think that I have an above average knowledge of “Common Sense “… although there are those situations where that could be argued!!! I’m restoring…. Rebuilding a 1988 Wellcraft Center Console Bay boat… new floors, new transom… adding a new additional fuel tank… installing a new console and T top… and an Armstrong Engine bracket… I guess if I am completely honest… I should say I was doing that… the project has been on hold now for a few years due to multiple cancer diagnosis’s… and being severely mauled by a dog!!!! Enough rambling about me… I absolutely love the carbon fiber chain plates… and agree completely that the 15 layers of fiberglass is hands down making them bulletproof… or at least making their attachment points bulletproof… With this said… am I correct in saying… that where the shrouds attach…to the chain plates is now the weakest link????? My understanding is… “If” there’s a catastrophic failure…. It shouldn’t happen with the chain plates ripping loose… but still could happen at the shroud attachment points… Do you have any thoughts as to what the strength is at those points… Keep doing what you’re doing!!! Even if I’m not able to work on my boat… I’ll get a tremendous amount of satisfaction in watching you build yours… I’m a 100% Service Connected Disabled Vet… and go back to the VA hospital in Houston tomorrow morning for more biopsies… This is cancer # 5 in five years… number 3… in the last year alone… I’m truly blessed…as 100% of my medical is paid for… I’m tired of fighting… but still doing my best to keep my head up and move forward!!!

Using numbers pulled from a quick search, figure that - on the low end - epoxy resin has a mechanical (not chemical) bond which in shear has strength of 3000 lbs psi (& much more with fiber reinforcement), chainplates of 4" width x 36" length bonded on one side result in an amazing 432,000 lbs of shear load need applied before one could rip those off the hull (4 x 36 = 144, and then 144 x 3000). Encapsulated in like shown in this video, that easily doubles - and these are low numbers for just resin with no fiber reinforcement, which I read can triple the strength or more. I'm not an engineer, obviously, but if these numbers and my understanding of how they work are correct or even close to that, then M&J indeed have an overbuilt boat and nothing to worry about. :D If these are wrong and you ARE an engineer - enlighten us please. :)

I am a little puzzled you did not use a structural bonding epoxy for the plate to hull bond, rather than what I take to be a laminating epoxy; e.g. Araldite 420 or similar. Also, the tapered plate geometry suggests that any plate to laminate bond failure could pull out or break free and reduce tension load capability. Perhaps past builds with this same design suggests an adequate structure however. My perspective is from aircraft structural composites.

I'm sure that with the amount of glass and epoxy you've put over the top it's stuck to the Hull very well, all with out any load points. The thing that i would be worried about most, with carbon chain plates, is the constant pulling from stainless rigging. Every time you tack, jibe, sheet in or out there will be wear. But tbf I'm not a naval architect...

Matt, I know that Duracell HAS to have fore and aft, upper and lower shrouds on both sides. Where are all the other chainplates? Are you going to have running back stays? Are you going to have an inner forestay? Are you going to have more than one backstay? Are you planning a solent rig on the bow?And the forestay needs a chainplate also, two if you are going with a solent rig. As I see it, there may not be enough time this year to do just the rest of the chainplates! As far as the "not to be used" chainplate, I had suggested asking Lloyds of London if they are interested in testing it. Big insurance companies might want to know. But personally I would hold on to it as it is very likely quite adequate for any other chainplate duties.

Maybe use the unused carbon chain plates for bow or stern stays or for giant hinges for a stern platform or hinges for stern Davitts??? Wow, that was a lot of layers on top of the carbon but I thought it would be more desirable to have a larger surface area to spread the loading over a wider area! Or what about continuing the overlays all around the lower hull and joining up with the future keel attachment area and back up the other side to the opposite chainplates and maybe then across the deck strengthening the mast base area and back to the first side??? That would then make a sort of space frame, or would it? So many things that can be done with this technology! Best of all, Kitty can then check it all out!!! Maybe there is a song there, or a poem??? SkipRay, Kerry, Ireland.

You never laminate fibreglass cloth on cloth. An interference layer of chopped strand is required between layers. I repaired a bow of an Epoxy laminated cloth constructed boat which was crushed by an impact. Consecutive layers of cloth on cloth weave peeled off like sun burned pealing skin trying to get to a solid substrate to start re-laminating. I never thought I would be able to get a solid base. Lesson learned. A boat builder warned me about the problem before I started. Everything he said played out as he said. In one of the Sydney to Hobart yacht races in Australia, a yacht retired. In the news footage you were able to see a fibreglass ribbon flaying in the wind along a third of length of the boat, could have bee caused by the same issue.

Why would one chuck out the sturdiest and safest of all possible chainplate construction structure in massive 40mm stainless steel to substitute with a little known material that is only glued to the inner skin (!) of the hull? "Because the shower goes there"? I have never seen in my life a more robust and well built reinforcement structure for chainplates than the ones that came with Duracell. If the hull has a layer of foam in the middle and you glue the carbon fiber chain plates to the inside (but also if the hull does not contain a foam layer) you will create concentration areas for the ingress of tensile forces coming from the rig. A strong tension on a shroud could lead to delamination of the hull underneath the chain plate. The tensile forces from the rig need to be distributed over the entire hull and converted to compression forces by structures exactly like the ones originally present on Duracell. Your choices are hard to understand. Why don't you insulate your boat properly from the inside? You would not need to prepare for condensation in the mattrass in the first place. You could laminate vertical strips of wood to the inner side of the hull for support and insulate with foam between them. Then screw on wooden slats on the supports. Or apply wooden panels that have a veneer on the show side. That way processing the inner hull surface becomes unnecessary and you gain a warm, traditional craftsmanship like impression in the otherwise coarse and bare interior. You'd combine function with ease of production and good looks. Wood is the most beautiful of materials if well surface-treated.
@Philippe275
@Philippe275 Жыл бұрын
So overkill if you knew that the chainplates was properly bonded to sanded surfaces beforehand. I'm also not so sure those 15 layers of fiberglass offer the level of strength you think they do, since the chainplate isn't wider at the bottom part, the weakest link in the system is really the surface bonding between the first layer of fiberglass and the chainplate. The whole fiberglass doesn't need to come apart for the chainplate to break free, only the layer that bonds to the chainplate and the chainplate to hull bond that you did last episode. What I would have done as a test of your previous work, is to tie together the chainplates from both sides together with ratchet straps and see if they are properly bonded. But anyway, you can always test the strength of the finish system since you know the sail area and how high the attachments are gonna be, and don't worry about weakening the bond since if it was done right, you would need north of 1 million pounds to break the bond in pure shear. One other funny thing is that mechanical fasteners don't only just work as this naval architect said they do, since they also clamp the two surfaces together and generate frictional force between the 2 clamped objects and that is only what should make a chainplate carry shear load.

Why carbon instead of fiberglass for the chainplates? Given that glass has a higher tensile strength? I understand that carbon is lighter weight, but I am operating on the understanding that glass still wins on tensile psi, which seems to be the winner in this use case.
