The Tula Shop - tulasendlesssummer.com/shop-tula/ Some of our stanchion bases were leaking and it turned out that our stainless lifelines that we replaced a year ago probably aren’t as high quality stainless as they should be. We decided that instead if repairing and re-bedding the stanchion bases conventionally to borrow an idea that some racing boats are using as well as our friend Mike and make carbon fiber stanchions. We bed a fiberglass rod into the deck of our catamaran with a collar that a carbon tube will slip over as the stanchion. This will prevent any leaks from forming again, it will take some weight off the boat, and it will be a great experiment. Our next project will be to splice our own dyneema lifelines.

Very well done video, my friends.I have a little information for you. Quality in stainless is subjective. 316 stainless will rust and that doesn't make it "quality" or not. I was a machinist nearly 40 years and worked with all types of stainless. I made any new hardware on my boats with 304 grade stainless. 304 will take a polish and not brown up. I made mooring bits and cleats with this grade and never had a failure through storms and a hurricane. 18-8 is a common fastener grade stainless and when sized properly for the job doesn't fail either. I really don't understand the marine fastination with 316. It is an alloy that is plenty strong but browns up and stains the boat's finish. 304 is a much better choice as it holds a polish and doesn't streak the fiberglass. I have a little consern with your stantion bases. I like the basic idea but when filling a hole in the deck straight sides are not very strong. The top and bottom of the hole should be beveled to create an hourglass shape. Also the G10 bottom plate should have the fiberglass post through it to provide strength. I don't know the wall thickness of the carbonfibre tube but I hope you researched the shear strength. Impact of a body pushed by a wave can be quite high. I admire the way you two tackle your repairs and Billie's skills show in his workmanship, confidence, and research. I am a little overkill in safety and strength areas. Tme will tell on this improvement and so far it looks good. Can't wait for the next video.

My God, OUTSTANDING. I suggest cutting a hole in the bow and installing looking glass into the ocean. Install watertight door separating the glass from the boat. If Jacques Cousteau already did it, carry on the tradition.🤯😀👊👽✌️

I like the Carbon stanchions idea. I might have put a small flat on the fiberglass rods to allow the water to drain out , I think dirt will clog the gaps but looking forward to see how they hold up. Cheers warren.

One VERY important thing to remember when working with stainless is not to contaminate it. Even the best quality stainless will rust if say you use an old steal wrench, pair of channel locks or old screw driver head. I've seen this happen a 1000 times. Regular steel pieces can be embedded into the stainless steel causing rust.

Wow! Who knew there could be so much work involved in something so small but obviously important. You two have serious patience. As boring as I would normally find the narration by you or anybody trying to explain in detail what you are trying to accomplish I actually found it enlightening. That's a compliment just in case I sound harsh. Impressive details. All your efforts and improvements must have increased the value of your boat double by now. Thanks for sharing. Carry on.

There is an old saying when it comes to boat rigging. < Stainless is half as good as it looks and galvanized is twice as good as it looks > My 30 ton west coast commercial fishing vessel, a troller had 40 year old hot dipped galvanized stanchions, rigging and turnbuckles on her, still going strong.
@xyzzy42
@xyzzy42 4 жыл бұрын
You can get red mil-spec grommets from McMaster. I've found they hold up much better in the sun than the normal ones. Still, I'd be worried the lifelines would saw through any rubber grommet in short order. What I did for my dyneema lifelines, was take a short length of plastic vinyl tubing and slit it lengthwise. Put that over the lifeline and through the stanchion hole, so it sticks out about 1/2" on either side. Then wrap some rigging tape over the ends which are sticking out to keep it from sliding though. Now the tubing will mostly stay put in the stanchion while the dyneema slides though the tubing. Won't chafe the lifelines or your stanchions.

Are you sure that the cable itself isn't 316 stainless. My reason for asking is that the rust appearance seems to only be where you have swaged ends. To me it seems the fittings are rusting and the rust is wicking from the fitting onto the actual cable. If the cable wasn't 316 you would see rust all along the cable from the salt water and moisture.
@southjerseysound7340
@southjerseysound7340 5 жыл бұрын
You could be right but its most likely caused by the dissimilar metals reacting in the salt water. If they were done correctly it wouldn't be a problem.

Very cool idea. But what is the rating as far as weight pushed against your poles? They’re life lines. Usually people only grab hold when their either going over the side or trying desperately to hold onto the boat. Did you take a piece of steel pipe and place it over your rod and put some serious force on them before doing all the lifeline work? Just asking because I was out in a hurricane whilst in the CG and almost went over the side when we took a wave broadside. Thank god those 95’s had steel rails. I think the three life lines is a good idea for Jetty. So far great work as usual. Keep those Videos coming. When’s the Next episode of Cooking with Mermaid Sierraa?

For the future when you do a project like this, use microfiber filler instead of cabocil. Cabocil is great for sanding but it’s not very strong and you could wind up with cracking. Microfiber filler is much stronger. Otherwise great video as usual.

I would be concerned about that carbon fiber tube being a weak point. Most people think it is a wonder material (and it is) but it is a lot weaker than that solid fiberglass rod and it is brittle. With it attached that way, I'd be concerned it would concentrate any load in a small area and fail.

jack nimble hi you can't leave any resin , epoxy or polyester types exposed to UV. They all degrade sooner or later. Hi solids paint (or gelcoat) is the only best solution. You could use UV resistant varnish or clear coat like on cars but they tend to require much more prep and maintain etc ( clear coat on cars is applied in very controlled conditions and is heat cured @ 400+degF! So not practical for boats to get automotive type performance). Cheers Warren

@@CheersWarren urethane and enamel clear coats do not need to be heat cured at all and only requires a light scuffing if not applied after applying the base coat recently. I also own a a carbon fiber bike and car bumpers that are exposed to plenty of sunlight without any harm. How are his stanchions any different?

Billy, Looks like a real great job....again! You guys work so well together. One quesiton, where did you buy the carbon fiber tubes? I checked with the local building supply stores and they do not carry it. Also, how expensive was it? Thanks

I could be wrong, but I think the tensioned dyneema lines will hold the stanchions down on their posts. I'm looking forward to the next videos.

Great instructional video. I hope your experiment works and lasts a long time. Really like the idea of minimizing any future galvanic corrosion by getting rid of metal backing plates, not too mention the weight reduction, which is critical on catamarans Please keep us updated on the successful or not-so-successful status of this project/experiment every 6 months or so. Also, when you get back to Jupiter, you should team up with Rob Arrington (deermeatfordinner.com) and do a joint fishing and exploring trip to the Bahamas with him and his wife. You and Sierra share lots in common with those two fine people, and he is a huge KZbin star (over a million followers). He is a local Jupiterian like Sierra, and an incredible outsdoorsman. A joint video with him would increase your viewership and subscriberships since many of his fans would probably start watching and following your Tula vids.

Some good tips here guys! My biggest advice as a boat builder for 30 years is NEVER combine stainless and aluminium. Guaranteed galvanic corrosion! (not that you did this!)

yes, carbon is ok with UV I think but the epoxy resin that is used to laminate it will breakdown from uv from what I have researched. Would look pretty cool straight carbon..

@southjerseysound7340 5 жыл бұрын
@@Tulasendlesssummer the new resins are much better than before when it comes to UV protection. But they still need protection especially in the marine environment and if you don't know what resins the manufacturer used its best to protect it.

Hi Billy, They probably use hi quality 'BS1088' hard wood plywood with Lloyd's Register type approval that it was made to the standard. Not the crappy Fir marine plywood sold in the USA, BS1088 is sold in USA by quality marine lumber supply houses. It's also available from McMaster. The plywood standard allows the plywood to be used as is , uncoated without failure or rot! It's the only plywood that should be in a boat. The fir so called usa marine plywood rots. If they actually made it with real southern yellow pine it might be ok but you can't get real yellow pine any more it was all logged out , current SYPine is now just a poor fast grown cousin of the original. Cheers Warren

At 17:45 you're filling a hole you previously drilled out originally and filled with Cabosil. Just to clarify, you filled with cabosil, sanded smooth, then drilled a smaller hole to accept the fiberglass rod base that holds the carbon fiber stanchion?
@Tulasendlesssummer
@Tulasendlesssummer 5 жыл бұрын
yes, I wanted to make sure that the there would be no contact of the fiberglass rod with any core material just in case a crack developed somewhere... I'm sure I could have just made the one whole for the rod and bedded it but...
