Your best shot at retirement is to have a plan. It's certainly doable. The biggest thing is to buy a house; don't rent. If you buy a house before you're 30 and stick to the 30 year mortgage no matter what (even if you move), you'll have a house paid off before you retire. That drastically reduces how much money you need coming in each month during retirement.

Literally in every country kids are almost like a lottery ticket (in a good way), yet a lot of Americans don’t get that. GenX checking in here. My husband and I are already living this. My mother spent a year in assisted living but "luckily" her finances covered this. I put "luckily" in quotation marks because she was basically living off the money she got as my sister's beneficiary when she died in 2015. That wasn't the outcome I wanted, but financially it was a good thing. My MIL is another story. She has no money and my husband and I have to help pay for her home health care and for other things she needs. My SIL has power of attorney but is taking her sweet time about submitting the Medicaid paperwork, so we're stuck with the bills in the meantime because she doesn't earn enough to pay for what MIL needs. To all the younger folks, if this isn't your situation now, it may well be your situation when you're reaching retirement age just like my husband and I are. We'd like to retire and move on to part time jobs and being volunteers to better our community, but that may turn out to be a pipe dream. It sucks to have to hope your parents drop dead and spare you the expense of caring for them. We're a rich nation. We can do better than this.

It's quite sad the way the system works there. My dad retired at 57 after his 30 years of work were made and he gets 82% of his former salary as his retirement paycheck every month. We live in a third world country and with all the good and bad, people are still not forced to have savings while being "active workers", unless their employers fucked them with the amount of registered hours of work. And even when my mom had to take care of my grandma, she had a special license called "relative care", where she could take days off to take care of any sick relative without losing any money.

What country is that good to its citizens, with that sort of government, why are you considered a third world country? I am only asking because in Australia most people think we are the lucky country, but as a 59 year old woman, i believe 40 years ago we were, but not for a long time now, they have changed our legislations so much, that you might as well call us little America, its disheartening and should be criminal what our governments have done to this country. When i was young, retirement age was 55, and they brought in an incentive to keep women with children at home to care for their families. It was called family tax benefit, which was already in existence, but they added a part B. Basically it meant, that once a fortnight you would recieve in your bank account, depending on how many children you had, example on 3 kids, just under $600. But on the other side, it also depended on what your partners wage, personally i thought it was pretty high, so if your husband/parner had a wage of 100.000 a year, you were eligible, personally i thought anyone on that sort of wage in the 80's and 90's didnt bloody need it. But thats just my personal opinion.

Years ago, my husband and I had to decide between him working for the federal government or industry. The federal government was the more secure bet but industry offered almost twice the income. But we knew that extra income would disappear due to layoffs, job changes, pensions going bankrupt, etc. So we opted to go with the federal government. It was a wise move as I am now living off of my husband's retirement plan. Without it, I would be living on the streets or dead. As it is, I have his health insurance and a monthly annuity that supplements my pathetic Social Security check. I feel really sad, for my sons, as both opted to go with industry and now both expect to have to work till they die. While that sounds like a plan, what happens if they become disabled like my husband and I did? My husband survived for 13 years being disabled, thanks to his annuity. I've survived 19 years of disability, again thanks to his annuity. I shudder to think of what will happen to my children if they become disabled without an annuity or pension.

I will buy them a bidet because I am not wiping anyone's ass but mine, but other than that, I am there for them the moment they need it. I think if you can self reflect and you had decent parents then maybe you will reach the same conclusion. But what blew my mind was, I think maybe it was People or McLean's magazine did a study on parents and kids, and only 30ish% of adult kids talk to their parents more than once per month. Okay lol, that doesn't sound like a lot of support is ready.

I live in Australia and have been struggling between caring for my two chronically ill and disabled parents and working full time since I was 20 (I’m now 30), as well as trying to finish my nursing university degree (so that I can make more money to help keep us above water financially). And I know compared to those in my situation in the USA I am more fortunate as we have universal healthcare, NDIS, Centrelink, etc. (even though there are a number of problems that have needed to be addressed with all of them for a long time).

At 28, I already had a taste of this when my mom had a life-threatening condition (Guillain Barre) that kept her in the ICU for months and then in a rehab/nursing center. I was struggling to finish my MPH, work fulltime as a Legal Assistant, my own chronic health issues and be her legal guardian (doing medical/financial/etc.). The pressure was crushing and I had to make hard choices to make sure she still had a home and medical care.

So difficult if you grew up with child abuse or domestic abuse and now your aging parents need care- and despite the life altering trauma they inflicted, you're not cruel enough to put them in a nursing home where they could be abused themselves. I can only speak for myself but since child abuse is so rampant, I suspect many people are in this situation.

Ashvith Shetty Judging by your comments here, I can tell that you’re more ignorant than many young Americans. I can tell you haven’t researched Bernie and know nothing about what you’re talking about. How about you go to his website and read for a little bit. Then look up his history as both the Mayor of Burlington, Vermont, and in Congress as a Rep and Senator. That might help you not look like a complete fool. He’s not like a normal politician - he speaks out against them too.

Don’t go to college unless the career you are going for will net you enough money to pay your loan off. When I graduated college my first job paid $35k. Their reason, I had no experience and had to be trained. I eventually earned $60k but it took 6 years, minimal raises and non-guaranteed bonuses only when they indicated our company did well. I work with others without a degree who were working their before me and we make about the same, with me making roughly $1,500 more. Lol.... time on job verses college degree. Not that big of a difference considering most of my salary went towards student loans. While they were not in school experiencing real life and paying a mortgage. They actually came out ahead in reality.

I'm a late life baby of woman who was born when the great depression (I know... which one?! 1929) took root. I've never known a time when a household wasn't multi-generational. The only thing that can make this circumstance a living hell or heaven is whether or not the family had always been abusive or healthy. Multi-generational living never ceased to exist, even among white folx; the nuclear family was set as the standard, but was not particularly the norm. Elders living at home will only be a problem is they were degenerates to begin with. Healthy dynamics are needed in order for care at home to be rendered efficiently as well as lovingly.
