Your best shot at retirement is to have a plan. It's certainly doable. The biggest thing is to buy a house; don't rent. If you buy a house before you're 30 and stick to the 30 year mortgage no matter what (even if you move), you'll have a house paid off before you retire. That drastically reduces how much money you need coming in each month during retirement.

GenX checking in here. My husband and I are already living this. My mother spent a year in assisted living but "luckily" her finances covered this. I put "luckily" in quotation marks because she was basically living off the money she got as my sister's beneficiary when she died in 2015. That wasn't the outcome I wanted, but financially it was a good thing. My MIL is another story. She has no money and my husband and I have to help pay for her home health care and for other things she needs. My SIL has power of attorney but is taking her sweet time about submitting the Medicaid paperwork, so we're stuck with the bills in the meantime because she doesn't earn enough to pay for what MIL needs. To all the younger folks, if this isn't your situation now, it may well be your situation when you're reaching retirement age just like my husband and I are. We'd like to retire and move on to part time jobs and being volunteers to better our community, but that may turn out to be a pipe dream. It sucks to have to hope your parents drop dead and spare you the expense of caring for them. We're a rich nation. We can do better than this.

It's quite sad the way the system works there. My dad retired at 57 after his 30 years of work were made and he gets 82% of his former salary as his retirement paycheck every month. We live in a third world country and with all the good and bad, people are still not forced to have savings while being "active workers", unless their employers fucked them with the amount of registered hours of work. And even when my mom had to take care of my grandma, she had a special license called "relative care", where she could take days off to take care of any sick relative without losing any money.

What country is that good to its citizens, with that sort of government, why are you considered a third world country? I am only asking because in Australia most people think we are the lucky country, but as a 59 year old woman, i believe 40 years ago we were, but not for a long time now, they have changed our legislations so much, that you might as well call us little America, its disheartening and should be criminal what our governments have done to this country. When i was young, retirement age was 55, and they brought in an incentive to keep women with children at home to care for their families. It was called family tax benefit, which was already in existence, but they added a part B. Basically it meant, that once a fortnight you would recieve in your bank account, depending on how many children you had, example on 3 kids, just under $600. But on the other side, it also depended on what your partners wage, personally i thought it was pretty high, so if your husband/parner had a wage of 100.000 a year, you were eligible, personally i thought anyone on that sort of wage in the 80's and 90's didnt bloody need it. But thats just my personal opinion.

Years ago, my husband and I had to decide between him working for the federal government or industry. The federal government was the more secure bet but industry offered almost twice the income. But we knew that extra income would disappear due to layoffs, job changes, pensions going bankrupt, etc. So we opted to go with the federal government. It was a wise move as I am now living off of my husband's retirement plan. Without it, I would be living on the streets or dead. As it is, I have his health insurance and a monthly annuity that supplements my pathetic Social Security check. I feel really sad, for my sons, as both opted to go with industry and now both expect to have to work till they die. While that sounds like a plan, what happens if they become disabled like my husband and I did? My husband survived for 13 years being disabled, thanks to his annuity. I've survived 19 years of disability, again thanks to his annuity. I shudder to think of what will happen to my children if they become disabled without an annuity or pension.

It was an important childhood lesson.
