We have been RVers since our first year of marriage (1986) and have owned pop-ups, truck campers, travel trailers, class A-B-C motor homes and a 5th wheel. In 2020 we sold our latest travel trailer, replaced it with a 2020 Arctic Fox 811 and we kept our 2015 Jayco 5th wheel that has become living space for friends and family that come to visit us on our homestead in East Texas. The truck camper sitting on our 2019 Ford F350 has been our favorite RV set up. Most of the time we tow our '97 Toyota 4Runner that is set up getting us into our favorite kayaking and fly fishing spots and it gives us extra storage. The truck camper does not have to be registered or tagged here in Texas, nor does it require engine, tires or axle upkeep. As for insurance, it has been the cheapest of all our RVs. As long as it's in the bed of the truck, it is covered buy the truck insurance and when it's off the truck, it's very inexpensive.

As a couple who just hit 50 years of marriage, I assure you, life evolves as we age. We used to have a C-CLASS. But hubby can no longer manage all the leveling, hookups, etc. So we moved to a van. We LOVE it! It's quick and nimble. And so far, we can still climb into the bed. You're wise to keep an open mind. Enjoy your truck camper!

I started out 16 years ago with 3 different camper vans, and moved up to a small Jayco travel trailer, and then a very large Gulf Stream travel trailer - and finally now a Lance truck camper. The ease of maneuverability, versatility, economy, and the fact I can get my truck serviced/repaired and leave the camper behind or simply explore the area sans camper is simply incredible. And, with 4WD and lots of ground clearance I can spend up to 14 days on my favorite sandy beaches on Long Island, Catskills & Adirondack mountaintops, awesome WMA Florida free camping, and other out-of-the-way places I could've NEVER thought of going with a 2wd van or a travel trailer! Enjoy your truck camper and - long live the truck camper!!!

I used to want a van and then an Airstream. Once I saw people could go to more remote places with Overland Trucks and Truck Campers, I started looking into truck campers. The Nucamp Cirrus is one of my favorite ones. It’s so modern and I am also a fan of Nucamp Trailers but their truck campers are my absolute favorite. We had a truck camper, no solar. Now we have a small 22’ Travel trailer for about 2 yrs. I want to go back to a truck camper, it is easier to back into campsites. My wife and I are getting up in age and she doesn’t want to get out and guide me anymore. So a truck camper is in the near future. Just have to decide how much we want to spend, cuz I am putting as much solar on it as possible and making the trip to Alaska and back cheaper by boondocking. This has caught my frugal wife’s attention. Looking for a 2015 Lance 1191, Arctic Fox 1140 dry bath, or splurge and get a Host Cascade 10.5, either way I am getting a F-550 chassis and put a CM flat bed on it and have custom storage built for under the wings of the camper. You can get an F-350 or F-450 chassis that has a 16000 GVWR so you are not overloaded, normal F-350 dually is max 14k GVWR and you need a lot of mods to handle heavy campers. I want the F-550, it has 19500 GVWR, so I have room to spare. Great video! See Stoney Boot channel, Scott and Sasha have the Cirrus 920 I do believe.

I might fantasize about getting one of the smaller Class A Newmars but in the end, I lean more towards either a 5th wheel or a truck camper setup to avoid the pricier motorhome repair headaches. Any RV can have issues, but towing something that doesn't have an extra engine and runs on switches instead of touchy touchscreens gives me more reassurance of easier RV maintenance.

Hey you Carey’s, It was my YT message you were reading off of and I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to answer every question I posed. As background to my post and on a personal note, I lost my Promaster (self conversion w lots of sweat equity as you could imagine) in hurricane Ian (flooded) after putting 60K miles on it. As I look to get another “solution” to vagabond around in. My first thought was just do another van (new van=>sort of expensive/sort of time-consuming), but then you guys got tricky on me and switched to a truck camper!! And that got me thinking- hmmm maybe I should look at a truck camper too, but I had all the questions/issues I posed in my original message. Anyway, I thought your coffee table chat format was super cool as you were kinda of thinking it through in real time (just chatting with friends over coffee). Thanks again for the thoughtful answers. And my last request to not get a class A was mostly to be humorous. However, class A’s feel like the retirement homes of mobile dwelling 😊 and you guys have another 30 years of being cool before you’re ready for the retirement home!!! Love you guys
@CareyOnVagabond Жыл бұрын
SO sorry to hear about you losing your van in the hurricane! 😭 Only thing left to do is decide on your next mode of exploration. We’re a tricky bunch over here, planting seeds of a truck camper in your head. Best of luck as you figure out your next move! Thanks for the questions and thanks for coming along. Carey On! 😊

We are super intrigued by the new camper as that's the exact one we're looking into getting for retirement travel. You may even be ready to sell yours by the time we are looking to buy. 😉 Especially interested in what you end up doing for solar power. 🤞 -Troy & Aimee

We found that the storage in the truck camper is far greater than in the van. Being only 2 of us, the back seats of the truck has massive storage. If you flip up the back seats, or remove them, it becomes a really big garage. We also have a fridge freezer that is almost 2 x as big, a large coat closet, more cabinetry space, a large bathroom and we are able to carry more water, and waste tanks. The camper also has a 3 burner stove with oven (that we never use), as well as a full dinette that can seat 4 which also covers to a super single bed for someone who is 5"10 or less. The main disadvantage of the camper is that it is not stealthy at all, it is much bigger, and full economy is horrible in the truck. Oh ya . . . one more thing - the van is a one piece thing. All you have to do is load and go. The camper is NOT easy to load onto the truck, and it has to be stored somewhere.
@CareyOnVagabond Жыл бұрын
Both have their good and bad for sure. Loving the much larger tanks and this next Sundays video will be about our new huge back seat garage:) so much room for our stuff!

I get why people are so curious. People become invested in your lifestyle over time, but you don't own anyone any explanations. Personally, I was dead set on getting a camper van for years, but the closer I get to pulling the trigger, the more I lean toward a truck camper. Primarily for the extra clearance and capability of a 4x4 truck, but the cost advantage is also a huge draw. Like you said, a well equipped van can cost double that of a really nice truck camper rig, even after some customization and upgrades. However, the height is a major concern for me, so I'll probably go with a pop-up camper, but I think a truck camper makes a lot of sense, especially for those who want to really get out there in the wild.

I’m Currently doing the 5th wheel toyhauler thing for past several years (3different rigs) and starting to go to a more minimal approach ( been waiting on an ordered van to outfit since 6-27-22, but have been considering the truck camper thing for awhile,which I’ve always wanted as well)! Time will tell which way I venture before long! I overheard you mention the possibility of hiking ( like the Appalachian trail ) that would be a great venture ! This video came at a perfect time for me! My wife and I have have been road tripping on weekends and long vacations in a Chevy express for the last 3 years and loved every minute of it, but we’re at the point where we want a little more room and 4 wheel drive capabilities. We bought an older k2500 and thought about 5th wheels and travel trailers. Ruled out 5th wheels right away because we wanna carry our hard kayaks or canoe with us. We’re so absolutely random that the slide in makes so much more sense for us. Other than carrying the kayaks or canoe

As usual, great video guys. Nicole (wife) and I would head out in a 2001 Plymouth Neon to go ghost town hunting and rock climbing here in Montana. I would get out and direct Nicole so as to get a tire on the high side of the road. One day up in the Tabaco Root mtns., we almost pushed our luck. Nicole turned to me and said," I think I'm going to buy the Pathfinder from my parents!". Her parents had just offered us their 2000 Nissan Pathfinder. We'd been hemming g and hawing on it a bit. But we got home, she called and a few days later we had "ground clearance"! Plus we sleep in it on our boondocking climbing trips! So I get why you two want ore ground clearance. I'm kind of amused but still understanding of the questions. I have owned a couple different truck campers over the last 6 years and have been a subscriber for a while. Watching you adapt to the TC is just as interesting as the van because with both vehicles you're always adapting for the adventures.....problem solving. Even as a TC owner I enjoyed how you setup and used the van to seek adventures and the adventure content I enjoy watching. While the differences of a van and a TC may seem far different to some they both provide great opportunities to travel and seek those adventures. By the way, getting the TC on and off will be a breeze and easier as you go.

Well a lifted 4wd C by Phoenix cruiser was our choice ( video on my channel if anyone is interested) I like the tall rigs like your and mine. The 4wd is just to assist but the height is the real winner. We ain’t going to crawl the Rubicon trail either 😂😂.
@RoadsandRipples Жыл бұрын
In response to the people who are confused by your choice, having done vanlife in a sprinter for 3 years I think this is the next best step 💯. We’re also starting to see the same roads crisscrossing the US and we’ve pushed our van through 4WD backroads ( we call it 3 wheeling) and the 4x4 Vans aren’t worth the inflated costs. What is the actual height ? Many tunnels we’ve gone through are 13’ limit. What app shows you height restrictions? Also would you be willing to share more about the totally cost? And was the camper new or used? Sorry for all the questions 😬

We were 10 1/2 ft in the van with the kayak on it. This truck camper was 11 1/2 feet but I installed air suspension so we are probably closer to 12 ft now. I believe this camper new depending on battery options etc is around 50k and up. We got a new 2022 much cheaper. We will be installing lithium soon:) We knew anyone who has lived this life for years would completely understand. Cheers!

Regarding fuel economy. How much fuel can you purchase with the money you saved by selling your custom van by George and purchasing the truck camper combo ?

We've rented three different camper vans over the past three years to trythem out. Some things we like, some not so much. One big con for me with camper vans is head space and head-bumping hazards. I'm six feet tall and was constantly bumping my head into cab shelves, power beds ( i.e. Winnebago Revel), cabinet doors, etc. Truck campers we've been in seem less cramped with fewer head hazards. What's your experience?
@CareyOnVagabond Жыл бұрын
Seems like all small rv,s have their head hazards until you get used to the space:) That said our nucamp camper has quite a bit of head space:)

When you take the camper off, what keeps someone from driving off with it? The reason I ask is,I'm a travel nurse, and I currently travel in a travel trailer. The trailer is getting older, and needs to be replaced, a slide in seems to be a better option, but security is a concern. It would hurt me if someone stole it, but it would destroy me for the fact my cat would be stolen with it. Is there something better than lo jack but less lethal than klaymores to protect it?
@CareyOnVagabond Жыл бұрын
We would lower it near the ground with the electronic jacks then take the jacks remote with us.

@@CareyOnVagabond and that would work? That would be ideal if it did. I've seen several in California that contractors use, they also were usually near the office of the rv park too. That may work! Much obliged.

Are tattoos a requirement? I’ve noticed after viewing 100’s of RV and truck camper videos that most everyone has tattoos. I just purchased a slide in and going to hit the road soon. I don’t want to fell out of place or be alienated because I don’t have any ink on my body. Should I invest in temporary paste on’s?

What's that one place on the top of your bucket list that you want to go in your new camper that you couldn't go to in the van?! ☺️

That’s so hard to answer!! We don’t really have a specific place in mind, more just exploring and seeing new things.

Exactly which is why traveling in a van would be more enjoyable, less stressful for you & pistol and If you wanted to go off-roading I would look into lifting your van.

@@vancandew7375 Too late😂 You may as well accept the fact that we don’t want to be in a van right now and are loving the truck camper. We’ll do a video in a few months explaining a number of things we are finding that are much better in the camper. 😉😁

Yes it is easier to get repairs and services on the pickup then a Van or motorhome .. when you get bored with your Camper you can live on a Boat and sail around the Horn ☠

Love your videos but it seems to me you are trying to make the truck camper like your van?? To me the only advantage of the truck camper is the four wheel drive and being cheaper than a van? I agree with you that the cost of vans are crazy. I’m sure if Pistol could vote he would prefer a van where you had climate control, easier to get in & out, better view. etc.. Feel down the road you will be making a video on we made a mistake selling our van?? Good luck, I hope I’m wrong? it’s just my opinion.
@A_World_Full_of_Lies Жыл бұрын
I guess it’s all about personal preference. I see a lot of people on KZbin with vans, wanting to go to remote places other than where tons of other rv’s are but can’t get there because a van can only take you so far. A 4x4 or Overland can get you to beautiful, more remote places where no one else is.
@CareyOnVagabond Жыл бұрын
So far no regrets! For us trying something new is never a mistake, even if it doesn’t work out.
