Wow another great video, I was so cross when you said people were leaving those horrible type of comments. *hugs* to you and your whole family. I totally agree with you about the phone lines being a great backup. There will be a time when the internet goes down due to an emergency and/or power outage and most people will have no idea what is going in. Where I live we can no longer get land lines at all. So I have a few, nice SW & HAM radios so at least I might be able to hear what is happening if it's long term. As far as fax technology, without getting too specific, there are still parts of the government that only uses secure faxes to transmit certain types of information as it's by far still the most secure in that arena.

Some people are subconsciously jealous that they do not have the passion or discipline to create something themselves. So, often they lash out and try and tear someone down who does, thinking it's the closest they can come to being creative if their overt criticism is able to affect and change the behavior of someone who is. People complaining about your dogs, like they **need** the content you create without your dogs, is a clear example of such a type or person.

Worked for the state public safety agency here in TX for over 30 years. The first seven were in the communications service handling telephone calls from the public and other LE agencies, lots of faxing documents. That was in the mid 80s. There as a second device duplexed with the fax, called a TDD, it was used to communicate with deaf persons. Maybe TDD was the precursor for texting? Still keep a fax machine in storage just in case it might be needed, next to it is a box of ballpoint pens and several pads of lined tablets. I really enjoy your videos!

I'm very sorry to hear about the terrible comments you receive. Your content has always felt a bit more wholesome that most of what I see. I pray that the positive comments can outweigh the bad ones and keep you up to making more content. I worked for the phone company for a long time, yes they are phasing out POTS service with gusto. The copper infrastructure is expensive to maintain and since the government no longer regulates the service, they can do with it what they wish. They are pushing fiber and abandoning the copper. I am actually surprised that they allowed you to order a POTS line, I've been told by former co-workers that they are flat out refusing the service in my area. Faxing is an activity that holds some nostalgia for me as well. I used to send a lot of them in the early 2000s as I worked in a small contracting office and would send out bids monthly. I also understand the feeling of certainty that holding a paper copy of something brings. Keep up the good work!

Ten years ago I replaced a multi-function printer for a non-profit I used to volunteer at. The multi-function had print/ copy/ scan/ fax features. The VP of the non-profit saw the printer had a fax option, and wondered why we weren't using it? If any receipts were sent, they were received by email. I hardly sent any faxes using it, email was taking over from the fax, though we did have one supplier who we had to send orders to via fax. We had it set, so that people had to ring up before and say I want to send a fax, because you used to get spam faxes, if you left it on auto answer there was the possibility of arriving next morning to find all your paper and ink wasted on spam messages.

I used to work in the marine electronics industry and the local prawn fishing fleet LOVED their fax machines. This was back in the AMPS (analog) mobile phone days. It was well known that conversations on the analog phones could be intercepted (albeit illegally), so the fishing companies installed Motorola Cellular Connection boxes to their mobile phones. This simulated a good old fashioned 2-wire phone line into which a fax machine could be connected. While it was technically possible to decode a fax transmission as it was flying across the air... there was no evidence that anyone in the fishing fleet had the equipment to do this.

Here in Australia they got rid of the copper phone lines a few years ago with the rollout of our national broadband network. In some areas they do still use the copper lines themselves for broadband, either fibre to the node or fibre to the curb (more correctly kerb, not curb as in "restrain"). Because they had to cut the lines and connect them to broadband node, they no longer connect back to the exchange, so they can't be used for a POTS phone line. And in areas where they upgraded to HFC cable or fibre, they simply no longer offer POTS phone services, so you can't get one even though the copper lines are still there. Actually, a few years ago I repurposed some old Cisco gear to build a dial-up simulator. It was basically my own personal dial-up ISP, but I was using digital modems so I could get the full 56Kbps speed rather than the 33.6Kbps maximum of a regular analogue modem. Unfortunately it was pretty useless since there were no longer any POTS phone lines to dial into it (or rather ISDN lines, since it was digital rather than POTS), but I could connect a 56K modem directly and get the full speed.

I recall having a fax machine at home in the 90s in the UK. Felt I really hacked the system by buying a box that would connect to the tel socket and the phone/fax machine to that. This was so I didn't have to have a seperate line. Call would come in, little box would determine if a voice call or fax and direct accordingly. It was suprisingly fast and if a voice call, person at the other end was completely unaware and not kept waiting. edit: I also remember Blue Peter showcasing fax machines in the 80s. They had 2 in the studio. 1 presenter drew a simple picture and sent it to the other machine...was totally blown away by it.

I've seen some means spirited comments aimed at various peoples comments here (including my own), but can't believe that you've had such depraved comments aimed towards you or your family, and by that I mean in a way that I do believe it but I'm absolutely shocked by it. From my perspective you provide a great deal of fun, nostalgic, informative and enjoyable content and I can't see how anyone can find any reason to not only be mean spirited, but threatening towards you. What kind of excuses/reasons do they use?? Here in the UK they're phasing out the old copper wire stuff so they can shut down exchanges and reduce running costs. Old phones now plug into the router (same as they initially told you and what I had to do when they moved my service over) and everything goes via IP. Most connections are over fibre, with many direct to the home, though still quite a few to the cabinet in the street which then runs a copper pair to your home, so only the last few hundred feet is copper.

I'm from Poland and here also couple of KZbin creators discuss why is it that YT doesn't do anything to prevent them from harmful and hateful comments... but I simply can't imagine why someone would like to send You comments with hate.. aren't we all connected with love for retro? :(

You would think so but sadly every community has its haters 🤷🏻♂

You don’t need a copper telephone wire installed. I use Vonage VOIP to operate all my vintage landline phones (even rotary!) and my fax machine!
@RetroRecipes9 ай бұрын
Whilst that is correct, the legislation applies to the newer VoIP lines which means they don't have to require the needed bitrate, but as mentioned I also just wanted to do it the original way :)

Sorry to hear you get nasty comments, love your channel. You guys are great - keep up the good work! :)

Up as recently as 2016, I still has a residential analog phone line, but heard through the local phone company, they were no longer interested in repairing or replacing copper wires. Some cable modems will provide an analog phone jack - meaning they are digital up to your house and then analog from there. So that is likely an option, just don't expect that they will be connecting you up to old copper phone lines from the '60s.

Great video, Perifractic! Love your dedication and you practical midnset. Never had to mess up with Faxmachines back in the day, but even with no interest in this technology from my side, you made a very interesting and compelling video about this topic. I like the walking araound and talking in nature footage. And coming from Germany myself: "Ja, Ja, das ist sehr gut! Prost!". Wish you all the best my friend!

Great job on the fax machine. Regarding the haters, I am sorry you have to deal with them. Take care of yourselves.

It confuses and infuriates me every time I hear you talking about getting hateful comments. You seem like one of the kindest people and nothing I’ve ever seen on your channel was even remotely offensive. I hope this fax works out for you. As for the trap door phone jack, those are (were) normally used in businesses as the demarcation point and the cord plugged into it went to a distribution block where the rest of the wiring was connected. I’m currently on year 25 at AT&T and for over 20 of them did exactly what the guys came to your house to do.

I wish people knew how much anguish they could cause with a comment. Kinda. I'm sure that would reduce nasty comments by 99% or more, but there are a few sick individuals out there who would still send nastygrams because they know precisely how hurtful they are. I still think it'd be a net good. Maybe some kind of emotional intelligence education needs to be standard practice in schools. Anyway, I love this channel, I love the content you guys make, I love the doggos, I love the weird humor. This place is right up my alley. It feels cozy, like catching up with an old friend. Keep doing what you love, it makes for a great channel. Mute the haters, they just want attention.

Great to see you out and about, walking Juni. Love seeing her charge about. Fab to see Ozzy in your flashback there, too. RIP li'l guy. Can't fathom how people could be so nasty with their comments. There's not an ounce of malice in any of you. They obviously haven't had decent parenting, where most of us learned the adage of "if you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". Sadly, I can't fax you, but look forward to seeing how this takes off. Totally agree with you about fax's benefits over the internet. It's not all one-sided.

Nice video. My dad used to sell fax machines in the 70's when they were $20k each, you had to sell them in pairs as no one had one. In the 80's he set up the demo on Tomorrow's World with Judith Hann presenting. They sent the front page of the Sydney Times during the show. Wish I could see that episode again

I love the way you do this videos. I don't care that much about fax- yet I watched the whole thing.

Excellent vid - the circuit repair certainly took me back a couple of decades ! ( so many fried resistors missed on the first pass... so many... ) I have a FAX machine lurking here somewhere... hmmm... As for the negative commentary - I'm truly saddened with that but be assured you've got a lot of love here for what you and Lady Fractic do, demonstrate and stand for. Merry Christmas from mine to yours.

Some people just wake up hollow. No god. No love. No friends. Their only real interaction is to spread hate. Those people should consider meeting god again and asking for a do over. We love you guys.
