After hundreds of requests, we finally took the time to sit down and tell you our background story that made us decide to move halfway across the world to Bulgaria from the UK.
It's the first of this style of video on our channel so let us know if you want more like this, any other questions that you would like us to answer or even if you're going through similar lifestyle changes, we'd love to hear from you 🙂
Thanks again for watching!

You guys have realized something that unfortunately a lot of bulgarians dont realize - buying a house in BG is a huge win, especially if you have enough land. Im planning to move to a village house in the next 5 years, the life in Varna is as gray as you described the city life in UK 😁

Warm welcome to Bulgaria. Your mindset and accents are quite interesting. You bought the house at the very right moment. Amazing price! I travel a lot across the country and coming from Sofia, I really enjoy my time in the countryside because you meet quite authentic people (those you were precisely talking about) and interesting people full of stories. The mentality is not the same at all in the bigger cities. Of course, young and fresh positive people like yourselves, in our sadly depopulated villages following the collapse of communism, are more than welcome in probably any village. Whilst in Bulgaria and as time goes by, you will realise we also have various dialects mainly harder Western and Eastern softer ones. Wishing you a great, relaxed and safe life. You sounded so relaxed lol (or at least that was the impression) 😄

Thank you so much for your kind words ☺️ it really means a lot to us that Bulgarians are not only interested in how we do things but like you mentioned, the Bulgarias welcome us with open arms when they see us trying to integrate the more we develop our plot. We love listening to our neighbors stories and history lessons of the country, even if it's abit scrambled with the translation haha 😅

I'm surprised you're saying that electricity is cheaper... all my friends in the UK told me my bills are insane. Maybe your area is cheaper... In Bansko you can easily pay 200 euros per month for a one bedroom apartment, and that would be if you're not using it as much...

@@TheVadrigar Some people get 700 euro per month for one or two bedrooms... Electricity prices are often commercial in my area, it's not a neighbour ripping you off, it's the electricity company that decided it's commercial and not private. and even with private, you can deg get to 10-15 euros a day heating uo a one bedroom, no rip off- literally the rates.

Hi. No idea if you will see my comment as I know this video is over 9 months old, but what the hell :) . Came across your video having searched for 'retiring abroad from UK' on KZbin. My search started over 2 hours ago and then yours appeared and what a breath of fresh air! A few comments if I may....firstly...can I just say what a beautiful couple you are, you are both lucky to have each other as you both hold the same outlook on your lives, may you always be blessed to continue your dreams! Secondly...I am at the other end of the age scale, well into the 'Winter of my Life' as I call it, looking to start the final chapter in my story :) and due to the passing of my 95 year old mother this year, having looked after her for the last 5 years, am now trying to decide the best place to live out the rest of my years, however many that may be. A few decades ago I spent a few weeks on holiday In Bulgaria in a holiday resort and while staying there a taxi driver offered to be available for any trip I, and any of my party, wanted to take. A great guy. There was one trip that meant going off into the mountains many miles from the hotel, he quoted something none of us believed, the price was so low. He offered to wait for us until we were ready to come back, even though it would be 4 hours or more and the waiting time was included! We booked him, and when we arrived, we invited him to join us and not stay alone. Part of the trip included a 3 course meal and we paid for his meal and then when we arrived back at the hotel we paid him double the fare, simply because he was honest and humble, with no wish to rip us off. Yes we came across some Bulgarians who were not so nice, but they were definitely the minority. So, sorry for the long post, but as I already know property in Bulgaria is still affordable my question is, would you consider Bulgaria a place for someone like me, just me no one else, should consider as a place to consider as my final port? You may think this is a strange and long post, but to be honest, I just felt that your video inspired me to write it. Anyway, I wish you both the best in your future dreams, take care of each other, may the Sun always shine down upon you both.

Hello guys! I admire you for the decision u made! I am Bulgarian , spend 6 years of my life in the UK had full time job good pay BUT! All I could afford was share house (I’m single) no matter how much I work and what crazy overtime I do - that’s it…. At some point I bought a flat in Bulgaria and two years later (in 2022 March) I moved back to Bulgaria! So far I don’t regrets for my decision. My flat is not finished yet but I live with my parents, found online job (it’s a call Center customer service for UK company) the salary isn’t great BUT it’s 10 to 18:30 Monday to Friday no crazy hours I have time to spend with my family nieces we also grown food in the back yard and I’m HAPPY! Currently I find more and more KZbin channels like yours and I am amazed ! Honestly there is a lot UK residents moving to Bulgaria - young people with kids or just young people hah enjoying the nature, clean air and stuff. I’m happy seeing people like you. Don’t worry IF you decide, you can find a job. The situation with jobs isn’t that bad specially when the managers hear u r coming from UK they will hire you right away ❤ much love from the sea side guys!

Hi! My wife and I also have lived in Bulgaria for a few years. You have taken on a wonderful and deep challenge! I am a subscriber to your channel, and look forward to each of your videos. From my experience, the big cities were easy for English speakers like us to navigate. But the village almost necessitates knowing the language at a C1/C2 level. Looking at the titles of your videos I did not see anything about the challenge of learning the language, and what your plans might be around that challenge. I'm really curious to understand that.

Hey Ryan, thanks for your support, we are continuously learning new words and phrases from day to day, we have been using homemade flash cards, listening to bulgarian radio and also spending time with our neighbors who help us pronounce and understand the language. We definitely understand more than what we can speak but we seem to get by pretty well. I can imagine you're not the only one wondering this so there could be a explanation video of what and how overcome the challenges of the language barrier on the channel soon. you are so right about Bulgarians, they are friendly, helping and curious, but not all people would find it fascinating. i am an introvert and quite a reserved person, i don't like when people come unannounced or look what i do and how i do, for me Bulgarians' curiosity is simply nosiness, especially if i know people well enough, quite often they prefer to look what other people do rather than do smth themselves. and give advice on smth they don't know, when not asked.... also i don't like that they can be patronising, i do understand that they want to teach me the bulgarian ways, to adapt to the country but not everything bulgarians do i find acceptable and reasonable..... i have my own approach to gardening, to training and caring of my pets, to building and designing our house, which used to receive a lot of disapproval from villagers, male ones particularly, because i am female, i am a foreigner and i am young (i look younger than i am), so by default i am not able to know anything.... at the beginning i was polite but then got fed up with constant shaking their heads and asked them to leave me alone, in a rude way. eventually they had to learn to respect and accept the way i am, and surprisingly they still like me :) so learning to protect your privacy and keep boundaries is essential in bulgaria.

We can relate to alot of the things you've said so thanks for taking the time to comment, There comes a time where we prefer to just do things our way and not always wanted the additional advice from neighbors, but we feel so far it has been balanced enough and the boundaries are respected. It does t help how half off our plot is exposed by a wire fence on the street, so it almosts "asks" for the curiosity if you know what I mean. I can imagine that being looked at as someone who "must not know what they're doing" is incredibly irritating so im glad you're heading towards the respectful relationship because we've also heard of other people experiencing similar things. Hope i haven't offended you there, it's not intentional 🙂

@@MarkandAnisha which part of your reply could have offended me? :) well, our house is just opposite the only shop and "bar" and we have wire fence as well, so we were for locals an everyday morning and evening live show for a year, smth to watch with a bottle of beer. now as we have some extensions built and more trees and shrubs along the fence and people got to know us better, the show was over. at the same time it's great to be a foreigner here because if you insist on doing smth differently they just say "oh, those brits are crazy/eccentric" (my husband is an english, i am not but who cares) and leave you alone. i left my country (it shares a lot of history with bulgaria and people have same mentality) exactly for the reason that i couldn't do anything my own way, so i am enjoying being "weird" here :)

When you say: If you are looking for work Bulgaria is not the place, all the Bulgarians are moving out is not quite accurate. You can find work in Bulgaria. The problem is that it is not well paid and you can't make a decent living.

Regarding Bitcoin I'm interested in it on ideology grounds and what it stands for, I'm more interested in the P2P element of it as in when millions more have wallets and trust it I can pay individuals for this that and the other, even labour removing the need for 3rd parties When buying in BG Bitcoins price rose so I was able to cash some out. But our house was 20,000 Lev when bought so we got ripped off compared to you ha ha... I'm also very interested in cadarno as it's helping the unbanked... I'm sure we could chat about it until the cows come home, which they do in BG... Cheers

Sounds like we've got very similar opinions on it then! Decentralised is definitely the way forward, we did own some bitcoin, but like yourself we cashed that out when it rose, that helped pay for the extension and appliances so it did us well. Haha I like that, yeah very easily could, if you fancy it, add us on Facebook or Instagram and we can finish this conversation another day over a drink 🙂

Could be better getting an opinion of a healthcare professional, wouldn't be necessarily a lawyer if I'm honest. There's plenty of Facebook expat groups where these types of questions are asked, but from experience I would personally go in and ask with a translator

Really happy that you felt the freedom in Bulgaria. Unfortunately when you realise how corrupted is the society on all levels it might be a bit late. You can pay to the traffic police if you are speeding, you can pay if you drink and drive, you must pay for the doctor or you die, when your camera or laptop dissappear miraculously and you see it in your neighbours hands you will realise a lot of things for the Bulgarian mindset. One of the million reasons for us to move in UK...Corruption Of the mind, of the state and the whole society. When it becomes normal it is not normal. When you have your first child you will realise and experience just a slight bit of it. For the weather and the food you are absolutely right- it's the best!
@MarkandAnisha
@MarkandAnisha Жыл бұрын
Completely understand what you're saying, we can't speak from experience because we have yet to be a victim of the 'corruption' but our view on this, is that corruption is everywhere, even the UK. The only difference is that it isn't in the public eye, it's a hidden hand instead. So in that perspective, I would rather be here and be able to witness it and potentially avoid it, than be victim to it without even knowing. Thanks for taking the time to comment 🙂

I came to Bulgaria at almost the exact time as you after working in Germany for 35 years, there was no way I wanted to return to the UK. So, I’ve a lovely little cottage here with an enormous plot of land that I really don’t know what to do with. I certainly don’t want to grow veggies as there’s a serious problem with water during the summer months and it’s a lot of work and I prefer to be on my little sail boat in Greece. So, no animal or veggie responsibility. Second point to mention, there are many Brits who succumb to the booze problem here a) because it’s cheap and b) there’s very often not so much to do. Third point, there is work especially in construction servicing the many Brits over here. But, it really is necessary, if possible, to have some sort of UK income. Personally, I very much like living here and very often the services are very good. Recently, I had to have serious medical treatment and the hospital………Ruse, medico, was excellent. So, one can have a nice style of living here and really enjoy the location of Bulgaria being in Europe. If you’re not into doing things for yourself then maybe it’s not for you. The advantages of living here for me are the peace, the often very good services from food to medecine and the fantastic value for money like council tax costing about 20 pounds for the year and the bins are emptied every week. One can go on and on for and sometimes against living here but at the end of the day each person must keep their feet on the ground and think carefully.
