México is a nice communal society where the US is more of an individualistic society. Whenever I cross the border, my heart changes, my personality changes...I know I am “pura güera” but as my Mexican-American friend, Janet, says, “Lee-Anne you have a Mexican heart.” I really feel called to help with the dog shelters train dogs for adoption or whatever help they need there or perhaps give classes to English-speakers about Spanish. This would never only effect the utmost 1% richest in America. It takes from tax payers and gives to those who don't pay tax. The Hospitals, the Pharmaceutical companies, the lobbyists, the physicians, the insurance companies are all cutting kick backs. You can never offer this free. Tax paying liberals, time to wake the hell up and vote accordingly.

Any healthcare funding system, whether it be private insurance or universal government funding, requires rationing by it's very nature. Many who support universal government healthcare believe the fantasy that it will cover everything for everyone at lower cost than a for profit system. You only have to look at other socialized healthcare systems with LONG waiting lists to learn just how untrue that is. Believe it or not, socialized healthcare systems do actually provide some economies of scale and efficiencies that private companies cannot replicate. However, with socialized healthcare, government bureaucrats decide who receives treatment and who doesn't based on regulations and policies - sometimes who lives and who dies! In a private system, insurance companies decide this within limits imposed by contract law and the courts/arbitration agreements. Either way RATIONING will exist! The question is, which system provides the best care and gives us the most bang for the buck? I don't think there is a clear answer to this. Private systems operating under the profit incentive are often innovative in finding ways to improve outcomes while cutting costs. However, shady operators will cut costs simply by denying your rightful claims. Government systems are good at providing routine assembly line type of care, but lag or fail at nearly everything else that is not clearly defined in regulation and policy.

I’m 90 mins from the border and am seriously giving some consideration to going to Mexico for healthcare as doctors here are held hostage in their practices by the insurance companies. They can’t cure anything-they just follow either an inadequate CDC protocol or an equally inadequate insurance allowance for say antibiotics. Some conditions require months of medicine but the insurance companies allow for 7-10 days of therapy which resolves nothing. There is absolutely no point to this madness. Maybe things will change when enough people seek out alternative providers and treatments for disease. I’m happy for you and your wife. I’d get the hell out of here also if I could.

The guys i work with are all from a small town they call Idalo (not sure of spelling) in Puebla State. Every one of them tell me they already have their house built back home. Many have families there - they're living stacked up six or eight in a small apt here and just walk across the street on payday to wire the greenbacks home, (hold a little back for booze and gambling). I keep telling these guys I'm gonna retire down there with them when they go back, lol. They always ask why I don't have my own house or a better job, I'm a gringo after all - LMFAO. Yeah the system here is now broken for middle class. Can barely afford to survive, let alone put anything aside. I should just move into the apt with these 6 or 8 guys and start sending my greenbacks down to Mexico to build a house too!

I am also from Oregon. 20 years ago my wife and I also lived in Jalisco, though at the coast. There were many things we liked about Mexico, more things we dislike about America. They both have their pros and cons. But Mexicans are Americans in my eyes. We are all North Americans. I found the people of Mexico to be warm, welcoming, friendly, and have maintained lifelong friends since living there. Congratulations on your move! You are so much better off.

Thanks for sharing your story. I live in Mexico too, for about 7 years now, and ended up here by accident. Fortunately I live close to the border so I can use both the US and the Mexican medical system, and I do all the time. Besides the lower costs of both seeing doctors and medicines, the time that doctors spend with a patient in Mexico is what I see as the biggest difference. In the US it's 20 minutes. In Mexico, it's whatever it takes, i.e. 3 hours sometimes and the doctor is not looking at his watch nor clock on the wall. Regarding the quality of care, the doctors here are just as good if not better from my experience, and so are the private hospitals; I've had to use them a couple of times also. As you pointed out, there are a TON of reasons why many of us expats live here and it's not necessarily the lower cost of living. Most of the time from my experience, it's the quality of life. For me as a retired 66 year old (and one that speaks Spanish), this third trimester of my life has been the best yet!
@JCTravelStories6 жыл бұрын
I, too, have appreciated the time a Mexican doctor will spend with you. So different than the insurance company or clinic administration dictated 15 minutes a US doc can spend with you. As a patient it makes you feel like its about you and your health instead of the profit of running more customers in and out the door.

BINGO! I have an autoimmune disease that usually affects women, but 10% of men get it too. Around three years ago when I figured out that I wasn't dealing with Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.) but what is called an M.S. mimic, I sought the advice of a highly recommended rheumatologist here in Baja California where I live. He goes by the book, no gray area, but during the first appointment he spent almost three (3) hours with me going over my medical records and my medical history; all of our interaction was in Spanish since I speak Spanish and he doesn't speak English but reads English perfectly. He ordered lab tests, and there were the clues. During our second appointment, he spent almost another three (3) hours with me going over the results and the two of us having a very intellectual conversation about all of the data; to be fair I am quite knowledgeable in the medical field. That was just one experience. I have several others which substantiate my point of view that Mexican doctors truly care about their patient's well being and not trying to create a conveyor belt of sick people in order to rack up medical fees. Regarding quality of care and medical knowledge, Mexican doctors for the most part are equivalent or better than US doctors; in my opinion. Overall, I can't speak highly enough of the medical experience and professionalism of doctors here in Mexico. They truly care about their patients and they work extremely hard to solve complex medical issues.

Actually I live in Ensenada but I do have a small condo in Tijuana to break up the trips back and forth to the US. In Tijuana I live in a middle class neighborhood, and over 50% of the license plates are US (California). I have a ton of neighbors that commute daily to San Diego. I do have a SENTRI card which enables me to cross more quickly, and that's the trick to making the commute bearable. On average my wait time is less than 15 minutes to cross at either San Ysidro or Otay Mesa. I don't know the exact statistics, but I would guess that 50% of the weekday traffic crossing the border are commuters for work. And many use the pedestrian entry at San Ysidro as well and take the San Diego Trolley to downtown. I hope this helps.
@viajero10046 жыл бұрын
alohadave13 I agree. I like doctors in Mexico better too. I have been to see them in Puebla and Juarez Chihuahua and they see you as a human and not a $. So, would you recommend someone live in Tijuana and cross to San Diego to work? Would that be too stressful? Too dangerous?

This video was very interesting and I really appreciate your honesty. I am from Mexico but I live in the United States. I'm also a US citizen. All my family lives in Mexico but I work here. Like you said Mexico has great things and the US has great things too but I agree with you on this one, the medical system here is crazy!! First of all, out of this world expensive. I have medical insurance and still I'm scared to go to ER for a migraine and end up with a $1,500 bill for a couple of hours visit (this really happened) and the migraine was a side effect of a medication I was put on. I had an emergency gall bladder surgery. After a while I was just getting worse and worse, had many complications. I needed to see a specialist and the soonest I could see one was a two month wait list. Really? I could barely eat. My Dr put me on antibiotics and after that he refused to give me any other type of treatment until I saw an specialist. I flew to Mexico, saw an specialist right away. (he also works for Hospital San Javier en Guadalajara) He put me in a few medications to regulate my digestive function, gave me a letter in english to justify me traveling with extra medications (enough for a couple months) medication for IBS and other issues. After I came back home the doctor PERSONALLY called me to ask if everything was ok with my health! I was impressed and almost moved to tears. I recovered and felt great. I know the US has great doctors, but I feel like money, pharmaceutical greed and insurance craziness are taking priority over compassion and real health care. My husband suffers horrible knee and back pain, doctors here give him only ibuprofen. We visited Mexico, a Dr put him in a great anti inflammatory. And by the way that medication is made in the US but was never offered to him before. Sorry for the long rant, dental care is another big thing. I ended up spending over $5,000 USD for a failed root canal and crown procedures. Thank you again for your videos. I'm excited to watch more from your channel. Best wishes for you and your wife.

Thanks for sharing you and your husbands stories, Marce. I'm hearing so many stories with the same experience .... The Mexican doctor cared about the patient in front of him, the US doctor cared about insurance, upselling to a specialist, and how soon he could get to the next money pit. But I don't blame the doctors. Its the system they're caught up in.

Mexico has many more advantages over the U.S. I'm a U.S. citizen from birth, but I'd rather live in Mexico. There are a few strings which prevent that, unfortunately, the main one of which is, ironically, my Mexican-American wife's strong attachment to her family here in the U.S.

I moved to Mazalan 5 years ago after I retired. Though most of the high or new technological are here, the generaly mind set of the people remind me of my youth some 65 years ago. People still sit on the stoop in the evening, children play in the various vacant lots and or under the street lights at night, games like tag or hide and seek are the games of preference. The biggest thing I've noticed is most Mexican's have only two rules to live by. They are, "Don't sweat the small stuff" and "Everything is small stuff"
