Living as an expat is a wonderful experience especially for those who are explorers at heart. I lived in Indonesia and I absolutely loved my time there. Singapore is such a gem, I fell in love with it and would visit as often as I could since it was only 1.55 hours away from Jakarta.

Buses and trains don’t run 24/7 for few hours a day. The few hours distractions are reserved for carrying out cleaning and maintenance to ensure the buses and wagons are pest free and hygienic ie the outage time must be absolutely in full control, no surprise to public.

Welcome to Singapore. Nice explanation and video about Singapore. Many who had not travel or comes here,everything hearsay about how Singapore is so strict,so expensive is not exactly true. For necessities or food,we have choice We can find very reasonable prices or in fact cheap food. As for law,if you are a law abiding person,i think Singapore is a great place. Not perfect,but good enough for me though Anyway,enjoy your stay here! By the way,you can have gums here for consumption but not for sales. We bought it from overseas,if the immigration ask did you bring gums in,usually small quantities are allowed
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 жыл бұрын
Yea, gum is still pretty popular among the expat community. And of all the places that Josh & Kalie have lived, Singapore has the cheapest and best food. Obviously, there are places where you can spend $100++ for a meal especially a champagne brunch, but basic meals are super tasty and cheap. Thanks for the comment. We're super fans of Singapore.

Geylang might be "sketchy" to you, but you get the BEST customer service ANYWHERE bar none. Even if you do not patronise the girls on offer, the "manager" *ahempimpahem* offers you drinks, brings you to a special smoking room if you wanted to smoke while you wait for your friends to finish etc. Ocassionally when a girl has finished with a customer, the manager would draw your attention to the girl that is now freed up, hoping to pique your interest. Even if you keep saying NO, they'll be like "ok cool no sweat bro!". When your friends finally do finish, they are in no hurry to chase you out - my friends could join me in that room to have a drink, smoke a cigarette or two, before leaving. And back in the 80s, Sim Lim Square had heaps of pirated (bootlegged) CDs (computer games and software) and DVDs (movies). The exchange/refund policy is SO FAVOURABLE towards the customer, they will always take back the faulty item, sometimes without even checking.

I can shed some light on the banning of chewing gums. One of the reason why the government decided to ban gum was because before the banned, those naughty people tend to stick their gums on door sensors of the MRT, causing the trains to be delayed, because these trains can't move off until the doors are fully closed.

Did you renounce your US citizenship and if not, how hard is it to file taxes etc and maintain status in the USA? Also are you expats because you’re concerned about the USA economy?
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 4 жыл бұрын
kbkesq Hi, thanks for the questions. Josh and Kalie did not renounce their American citizenships and have never considered it. Although they love their country, they enjoy being abroad more. They didn’t become expats due to economic concerns although there are several economic advantages to being an expat assuming you’re making US level wages while living abroad. Regarding taxes, we actually have a video about taxes coming out tomorrow. If you haven’t already, subscribe and hit the notification bell so that you’re notified when that video comes out. If you still have questions about US taxes after that, you can leave a comment on that video or contact the interviewee directly as he is a tax professional. To answer your question though, it depends on your tax situation as to how difficult it is. Josh would say no but Kalie would say yes, doing taxes is hard. So Josh does both of their taxes. What type of status are you looking to maintain in the US?
@kbkesq
@kbkesq 3 жыл бұрын

Regarding the gum question and why foreigners seemed to be specifically targeted (@11:15), here's the quote from the Singapore Police (Official Online) Force: "Foreigners, specifically Ang Mos [Caucasians] have been told about Singapore's GUM laws. As such there is an EXPECTATION that they would be hassled for bringing in gum. So we obliged. That way, tourists will have a story to tell when they get back to their gum-chewing home. Think of the disappointment when they get home and they tell their friends and families that they had been to Singapore and (about) the only thing their friends and families KNOW about Singapore is that gum is banned in Singapore (not EXACTLY true), so they are asked, "Is it true that you cannot bring gum into Singapore?", and they answer: "I don't know." Wouldn't that be an anti-climax? So we give tourists what they want and expect." :-)

How much the rent there for small apartment
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 4 жыл бұрын
Great question. Our apartment was $2,450 SGD per month asking price our first year and we got it down to $2,300 SGD. The market changed and prices dropped so we asked if we could get a lower rent and we got the place for $2,100 SGD per month our last two years. It was a 38 sq meter 1 br condo 15 min. from the CBD in between two MRTs. You can find rent for less depending on level of accommodation and location. Check out www.propertyguru.com.sg/
@MrJacobkoh
@MrJacobkoh 3 жыл бұрын
generally, apartments are costly. Depending on where you want to stay(location), there are condos and HDB( public housing apartments). You can stay in an apartment for yourself or stay in a rented room (Which is generally cheaper) A HDB flat would cost generally lower than a Condo. Depending on which location, the cost would be 20-25% for the same type of flat.

@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 жыл бұрын
No at all. It's that sometimes in life, you don't know what you don't know. Saudi was a great experience but it also wasn't our cup of tea to continue with. We experienced it for a year and that scratched the itch. We've always said that if we had to go back for whatever reason, we could and would. We'll admit, where we lived wasn't the most glamorous and that's what partially caused the boredom at times, but it's all good. So where did you live in Saudi Arabia? - Josh
