I spent almost my whole life in Germany. I got the opportunity to move to Saudi Arabia, a country, that sounds strange and dangerous for Europeans, mostly because all we know is from media. When I arrived in Saudi, it was (as expected) a different world. But it was a world that fell in love with within a couple of days. So many nice and polite people. So much Respekt, I was welcomed by every single person. I came to the conclusion that the beauty of a country depends significantly on the people. I am still in Saudi and I still love this country like the first day.

I’m in Saudi right now for work. It’s been amazing seeing the new levels of freedom, economic growth and development that SO strongly contrast my experiences here 9 years ago. The sense of relief is palpable. The Saudis have always treated me well but now there is an unreserved openness and friendliness that reminds me of Egypt. I hope good things for the people of Saudi, and pray that as they explore new avenues of freedom that it doesn’t just turn into new burdens brought on by the same moral pitfalls we suffer from in the west. Enjoy these new paths, KSA, but do so, wisely.

As a photographer, I've spent quite a bit of time in Riyadh over the last year and a half, and I can tell you, literally everyone I've met or worked with has been extremely cordial and friendly. As you correctly point out, there's a HUGE difference between the people on the ground in Saudi Arabia and it's political challenges and aspirations.

@@ajs41 -- A good question. I generally stay at the Courtyard Diplomatic Quarter, and I've seen plenty of women business travelers there, several who seemed to be traveling alone. That said, they're likely not visiting the more depressed areas; more likely working with contacts in the government, or with Aramco. And that isn't substantially different than working with business people anywhere else, at least since MBS started making changes in women's rights there.

It is known that Muslim men do not wear jewelry because it is forbidden, but it is permissible for a female to do so. And the country is most keen on the comfort and privacy of Saudi women. How does it feels ? I see many muslims writing such statements especially in the reply section unfortunately. We cannot stop the drinking of a drunken beggar on one switch tap. Only by bit by bit. Similarly you have to go. You can start by saying how generous we Muslims are and such teachings of prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. And gradually increasing the pace. I have seen this mistake from many bros and sis. @@On_The_Piss . Women who want to write a thesis about women in the middle east, leave with a different idea and then return with a different tune. Why??? Simple Q? A woman keeps crying loudly inside an elevator or park and nobody comes to save her until she is raped and only the surrounding public comes with stories the next day, we heard her cries, we heard her cries but never dared to go or dial 911, in the meantime the goon tells, "see you have cried three times and nobody came, if you cry once more, I am going to slit off your throat and you know what would have happened after that? I have read thousands of such news. I was riding a bus overseas in Pakistan when I heard a commotion in the next seats. One lady yelled at some goon for his inappropriate remarks and 10 guys stood up asking."Sister, you got some problem due to this guy?" and that goon slipped away in the meantime as he knew she had got help. Now in which situation woman should feel safe when she just raises her voice and ten men come to her help taking her as their own daughter, sister or mother, or when a girl keeps crying at night inside elevator or park or keeps banging door until she is ready to get raped? Draw your own conclusion. Peace!!

I wouldn’t agree with the second Muhammad in regards to “living in Saudi was like living with ISIS”. ISIS torture and kill people. I lived there and I did not feel that way. I would say that 2 years ago, Saudi was more strict with the Islamic beliefs and its culture. In regards to being held for having a tattoo and cutting a person hair, this was done by the religious police which unfortunately was operated mostly by people who had no to little knowledge in the Islamic studies. And some comments that I would say if I was with you is that most houses in the area where the foreigner lived were once owned by Saudi people and then they were given away by the owners to whomever in need. And yes, Saudi Arabia, especially Riyadh, is a night city because of the climate. I hope you have a great time in Saudi.

YES! I was in Jeddah (more liberal and cosmopolitan) from 2001-2004. A white guy exposing his elbows in a t-shirt and walking around with a camera would have so many death stares on him back then. Major haram and just asking for the mutawa to step in. I couldn't believe the first few minutes of this video. The country seems to have opened up so much. Especially with that guy walking around with his girlfriend (even though she is covered)......that's utterly out of this world. Wasn't possible 20 years ago, even in Jeddah.

Roy Amstrong You really sound like you give about human beings... I like that. But let’s talk about the reality, because you sound like you’re living in a movie. We Muslims don’t want libéralisme, because it’s subjective, it’s baseless. It’s just about what white people find okay, it’s the white mens sensibility. Like having sex with your own sister, having sex with animals, homosexuality, and more of these disgusting things are freedom in your eyes. But it’s madness in our eyes. We DONT want it. You can’t force your taste upon us. Talking about animal, go clean your own mess first, people are starving in USA. They kill each other for 1 gram cocaine. Look at the crime statistics, you would almost think the USA is a war zone. You guys think letting your sister or wife walk half naked is freedom, well, we don’t share this opinion. And don’t talk like your the president of the USA. “ we will invade you” bla bla bla. You will do nothing my friend. Saudi Arabia is holy, there are 1.8 billion Muslims who will drink your blood if you put one step into that land.

And please don’t talk about sleeping with sisters when you marry your first cousins. Everything happens in Saudi Arabia but it’s all hidden under the carpet but you can’t fool people, the whole world has seen what Saudi people are like when they leave Saudi and believe me their behavior is not what you call honorable and they have no boundaries! The Arab world looks upon you as traitors who sold out to the West.
