Originally, we fed our chickens tractor supply feed but it didn't take us long to change it!
We tried out a budget friendly feed for our chickens that will cut our cost in half! It worked out great for us! We've included the cost breakdown below.
Total for 120lbs of dry beans and rice feed = $80.10 (must cook!)
1 cup dry rice = 3 cups of cooked rice
Beans and rice can produce up to 360lbs of feed for $80.10 which makes it about .22/lb
Regular show flock layer feed from local feed store comes out to be $125.64 for up to 360lbs of chicken feed.

I think because the beans and rice are cooked and soft, they don’t spend time in the crop and gizzard being ground up before digestion. The birds just don’t feel full long enough. They feel hungry sooner. Beans and rice MUST BE COOKED for birds to eat as you said, or it will kill them. Possibly just supplement with cooked beans and rice once or twice a week?

That's a great idea. We've been doing that when we have some down time throughout the week. They love it for sure. 😂

So I've heard. 😂 that would be something good to do. At the size of my current flock, I don't think it would make enough. 😅

I would suggest reducing your chicken feed and give a smaller amount of cooked beans & rice to balance their calorie intake. I'm aware of the lower quality ingredients processed into animal feed, waste products like cooking oil go into feed to make up the fat content.. I'm getting some chicks in a few months and will have the same issues of sourcing a lower cost feed.

Biggest problem is you’re starving. Your chickens from vitamin D, feed them some sunflower seeds and scramble them up some eggs a few times a week if you would like to see your egg production multiplied by 500% like mine has it’s wintertime, and my chickens lay more than they have ever. Prove me wrong.

I wonder how chickens survived in the wild prior to being fed by us all these years. 😅 Ours free range as well so they get all of the goodies out in the field.

@@SunsetAcresFarm ya same and I give them some super water mix that I was created as well really helps. I heard from a 70-year-old Mexican who has had chickens for 50 years if you want eggs give them cayenne pepper. I do a lot for my chicken. They’re kind of spoiled. I can’t deny it. They definitely eat more food than they would find out in a wild.

I think you're doing it the hard way. My chickens peck dirt so I don't think sorting and washing the beans are necessary. I'd probably just dump everything in the crockpot or instant pot. But I get distracted so cooking beans on the stove runs out of water for me. You're yard looks mowed closely but mine is weedy ( mower died). So I take my clippers with me when I go feed and clip weeds and throw in the pen. I've planted collard greens and some other things that I put in containers next to the coop so I can pick and throw in. I agree about the time and storing the cooked beans. But, I'm wondering if you put it in a bucket outside and let it ferment it would store and it's good for them. I used to feed all my poultry fermented feed and I had bowls and troughs I poured the liquid and everything in. I had to water less and they ate less. I bet you can mix the feed and beans and ferment. My quail, chickens, turkeys and everything got it. Unfortunately, I can't free-range any more. I no longer have quail or turkeys. We feed producer's pride scratch grain when we can get it or cracked corn when we can't. No eggs all summer. None. Not sense it got cooler, either. Plus, I throw in weeds and scraps. My hubby didn't know chickens can't eat raw beans and threw my whole 25 lb bucket of lentils to them. We had just got married and he didn't understand the concept of leave my stuff alone and go buy a bucket if you want one. It's cheaper than the new beans you now have to buy me 😂 Yes, he's still alive. My chickens didn't die either. They didn't eat most of the beans so I guess they knew better. Sorry for the novel I wrote. I do have a question though... when I ran my chickens and turkeys together my turkeys, mainly the males, would get black head and die. Do you do anything to prevent it? Or have you just been blessed to not encounter it? It was so frustrating and my girls would try to set on infertile eggs because my males died. They would adopt chicks and run their mothers off and raise them 😅 Such a pretty rainbow and sunset ❤❤

This information is gold. Thanks for sharing! I haven't encountered that with our turkeys. I did give some to a friend and somehow all of her turkeys died. Turned out it was mites in her coop so she moved it and still treated the area with diatomaceous earth. The weird thing was it didn't affect her chickens as much as it did the turkeys though the turkeys were younger. Hopefully I won't have to encounter that. It is a lot more sandy here where we live so that may help us as well.

For years I have always bought at least a half a year to a year's supply of the Egg Layer Pellets and All Flock Feed for my mix of chickens, ducks and guineas. I also feed whole corn. They have free range all day. I've always had plenty of eggs. So last year when everyone was having problems with their birds laying I still had feed from the year before and tons of eggs. Luckily I only bought 150 lbs of feed last month instead of stocking up like I usually do. Since then my birds will only eat the corn and keep leaving the store bought feed and acting like they are still hungry. Egg production has gone to if I am lucky 2 eggs a week from a flock of 25 chickens. I have a mix of Lentils, Brown Rice, Peas, and Pinto Beans in my crock pot as I write this. I don't know what's going on with the feed but if my birds don't like it and I have to buy eggs I won't be buying it anymore! I actually had to buy eggs last week! Thanks for the video and information! Reply

That is so crazy. Makes you wonder what could be in the feed. We are wanting to start growing some food for chickens too since we have space. I'll be exploring that. No one wants to have to buy store bought eggs. They aren't the same. Sorry you had to do that! Hopefully this will help you! 😃

@@SunsetAcresFarm - The worst was we just butchered a hog and had to eat the bacon with store bought eggs! My husband saying "this is a sin"! From everything I have found this should work! @RosebudBB true. They are trying to take over I feel. Thats why I'm learning all that I can. I didn't grow up in this type of lifestyle knowing these things but I have loved learning them. One thing that may help with egg laying and the shorter days, add a light to your chicken coop to give them an extra few hours of daylight. They will keep providing eggs. When they don't get enough daylight, they will slow down or take a break from laying eggs too.

obviously your flock is well looked after, but I think you could have been a bit more precise in your approach to this subject. Raw beans and rice should have been weighed just for this video and re weighed after cooking, instead of just guessing. Then measured the amount that you were actually having to feed the flock every day. to give a more accurate view on whether to feed corn feed or beeans and rice.

I didn't watch all of this but I did notice you use salt that is poison and all the trace minerals are removed. I suggest you start spending a little more money on sea salt, celtic or Himalayan salt and use extra virgin olive oil. Vegetable oil and canola oil is highly processed and that salt you use. You will see your blood pressure go down and feel better after just a few months. Have a wonderful day.
